I Am The Great Horse is a historical fantasy novel by Katherine Roberts. It is written from the perspective of Bucephalus, Alexander the Great's warhorse, and follows their crusade from Greece to Babylon. Bucephalus is cared for by Charm- a lowly stable girl, and the only other person Bucephalus will allow to ride him- although she fears Alexander's increasingly violent fits of insanity...and none of them can escape the brutality of the ancient world.

This novel includes the following tropes:

  • Call to Agriculture: After Alexander's empire collapses, Charm and Tydeos flee to start the horse breeding farm they've always wanted. There's no war or kings involved in this new peaceful lifestyle, which is totally fine by them.
  • Running Gag: Bucephalus being upset that Alexander never renames a city after him. Receives a more serious Call-Back near the end of the story; Bucephalus is deathly ill, hears that Alexander's most recent construction project will be named in honor of him, and declares it Worth Living For.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Alexander, a charismatic, surprisingly insecure king whose ambition consumes the known world, and his illegitimate half-sister Charmeia, a humble and compassionate slave with a surprisingly fiery temper.
