Of Ghost Tales and Dragon Scales is a Danny Phantom and How to Train Your Dragon crossover, in which Hiccup and company end up entering a Ghost Zone portal, which closes behind them. Now Danny has to hide a group of Vikings and dragons while he tries to find a way to get them back home before they break time. No pressure.

- Adaptational Sexuality: Sam turns out to be gay in this story, having convinced themselves that they were interested in Danny when they were really just friends.
- Fish out of Temporal Water: Thanks to the portal, Hiccup and company end up around a thousand years in the future. Danny tries to keep them isolated at the summer camp, in order to both limit the shock and try to prevent any paradoxes or changes to history, but that doesn't go so well, in part because they can tell that he's hiding something.
- Humanity Ensues: Thanks to Aragon's amulet, Toothless takes on a human form in order to hide from ghost hunters.
- Language Barrier: Ghosts can understand the Vikings without issue, since Old Norse is a "dead" language, but modern humans cannot, forcing Danny to act as a translator whenever the Vikings interact with Sam or Tucker (or anyone save other ghosts, really). Tucker rigs up a translator later.
- Outside-Context Problem:
- Hiccup and his friends are used to dealing with dragons, but ghosts come completely out of left field.
- Similarly, with all the various ghostly creatures that have appeared in Amity Park, anyone who sees the dragons assumes that they're ghosts, not living beings, since no one expected to see living dragons.
- Poor Communication Kills: Danny initially tries to hide from the Berkians that they're a thousand years in the future, partially to avoid a paradox. This causes a lot of mistrust, because they can tell that he is hiding something.
