Legend of Katara
is a AU Avatar: The Last Airbender Fan Fic by Kelev. In a universe where Aang was found by Hakoda on the day Katara was born, and died after he was released, the Avatar Spirit passed on to Katara. Katara begins her own journey to stop the Fire Nation at the age of 12, leaving with her brother, the bison Appa, who has been aiding the tribe since Hakoda found him, and Aang's spirit.

This Work Contains Examples Of:
- Adaptation Expansion: Suki joins the Gaang much earlier than in canon, joining when the Gaang leaves Kyoshi Island. Longshot, Ursa, and Smellerbee all join the Gaang after Katara frees them from slave traders.
- Adaptational Badass: Katara's the Avatar, and can bend both air and water by the time she leaves the Southern Water Tribe. Also, Yon Rha can summon lightning. And Ursa knows how to Chi Block.
- Darker and Edgier: The author has stated she intends to address issues not seen in canon, such as racism and slavery.
- Dead Fic: Hasn't been updated since November 2016.
- Deconstruction Fic: The life of an Avatar is inherently full of conflict, and so despite the show only showing adult Avatars among the past lives, in this story Aang actually isn't the first Avatar to die young - though his premature death does seem to be one of the most consequencial. The prologue in which Aang interacts with all of the past Avatars indicates that living to old age is rare for them and the majority never made it past fourty. Two even died as children, like him.
- Depower: Aang can't bend in spirit form, though he can still interact with the world via touch.
- Ursa can also do this through chi-blocking.
- Fantastic Racism: There are several people with this in the Fire Nation military.
- Happily Married: Hakoda and Kya, until Kya is killed.
- He Is Not My Boyfriend: Katara is like this about Aang, and Sokka teases her about it a lot.
- My Greatest Second Chance: Aang views the opportunity to help Katara as this, since he failed to aid the Air Nomads and was trapped in the iceberg doing nothing for almost 90 years.
- Not So Stoic: Hakoda is enraged initially, then breaks down sobbing after Kya is killed and Katara is found to be the Avatar.
- Official Couple:
Word of God is that the ending couples will be the ones from canon. - Oh, Crap!: Sokka and Katara have this when they realize the Fire Nation is coming in chapter 5.
- Rule of Three: Aunt Wu says Katara will have three companions for most of her journey.
- Role Swap AU: Due to Aang's death, Katara now takes the role as the Avatar, though he still stays around in spirit form as her teacher.
- Spirit Advisor: Aang often helps Katara and offers her advice and comfort: she's also one of the only people who can see Aang's spirit.
