The Culture of The Past Trilogy is a set of three fanfictions of the Nintendo game Splatoon, created by NoOnesThere on Wattpad.com.

The first fanfiction centered around the city of Inkopolis, 5 years after the 2nd Splatoon game, where a group of college students help with the Squidbeak Splatoon defeat an plan to take down the city and potentially threatens all life in Earth.

The second fanfic, City Slickers, takes place 6 months after the events of the first fanfic, which centers around the group and the Splatoon going to the city do Splatsville to investigating mysterious disappearances, discovering old secretes.

The story was prematurely canceled by the creator

The story can be read here

Culture of The Past contains the examples of:

  • Abusive Parents: Misa’s Mother, Mamori, shows to be extremely exhausting and emotionally manipulative to Misa, making her feel guilty in order to get her to take her to Splatsville.

  • Adaptational Deviation: As said by the author, Culture of The Past 2 and 3 will have differences in how setting and characters are portrayed especially in the third part. This is justified however, as the story is being written before Splatoon 3 was made and released.

  • Ambiguous Situation: What exactly happened in the Splat Lands are unknown. What was in there that attacked the people and killed nearly 25 people are never explored in the first part, however, it’s possible it will be explored in the second or third sequel.

  • Battle Couple: The Lovers are a pair of assassins who, while cold hearted and sociopathic, they clearly love each other no matter what.

  • Bittersweet Ending: Estefa and Lewis are dead while Eddie, Gabbie and The Twins are arrested and face justice. The city of Inkopolis and Octo Valley is fixed and the Splatoon confess about the old Agent 3’s actions and promise to hold no more lies. However, a lot of damage is still done, as the citizens are more distrustful of The Splatoon, Sebastian and Claudia, and despite Misa literally saving the world, they are now targeted for discrimination for being an Inktoling, and the no doubt tons of psychological scarring on the main cast and psychical scarring on some.

  • Break the Cutie: Lewis does this towards Isa, making her PTSD over her traumatic incident with commander Tartar, leading her hyperventilating and crying.
    • Eddie Moss brutally beats Marina for standing up to him, leading her losing an eye nod her voice, and no doubt psychologically scarring her

  • Broken Pedestal: The citizens of Inkopolis and Octo Valley To the old Agent 3, Cassie, after discovering she left a bunch of people to die in the Splat Lands to save other people. This is also what somehwat becomes of the Splatoon, as their relationship remains rocky

  • Bully and Wimp Pairing: Deconstructed with Tabitha and Kobe, as while Tabitha does care for Kobe, she is unable to not keep bullying him and sees it as just fun while Kobe grows restless and lacking self esteem to deal with it.

  • Central Theme: Corruption and Past Trauma, as most of the villains are in some high position of power and their motivations are from their past of being oppressed, rejected or some combination.

  • Childhood Friends: Misa and their friend group had known each other for years apparently.

  • Evil Is One Big, Happy Family: Subverted hard for Estefa and Lewis Group, who can’t stand each other at worst and barely tolerate each other at best, with the exceptions of The Lovers and Gabbie to each other.

  • Fantastic Racism: A good chunk of villains exhibit this within the story:
    • Estefa Dora shows to completely despise Inklings and Octolings due to their mistreatment of him when he was young. To the point he wished to culturally Genocide them
    • Lewis Coltrane just straight up hates Octolings for no reason exhibit seeing them as inferior beings.
    • Eddie Moss also shows a hatred of Octolings, due to Agent 8 covering up The Old Agent 3 leaving him and his younger sister to die

  • Fatal Flaw: A good chunk of the villains show this:
    • Estefa Dora wishing to keep a tank filled with the mutated Inklings and Octolings would eventually be his downfall, as the tank would break in his and Misa’s fight and cause the death from the shards and force of the water
    • Lewis’ arrogance, pettiness and his copying of the other villains work always lead him getting foiled as it shows primarily with his death where instead of killing Isa right away, he taunts her out of pettiness, which gets him killed when he’s distracted
    • The Lovers vengefulness makes them usually short sighted, which leads to them getting hurt quickly in fights.

  • Greater-Scope Villain: Mayor Ridley Lavender, being the corrupt scumbag former Mayor now prisoner, who, among other acts as Mayor, sent 40 people into the splat lands with no protection, leading to their deaths. Subverted as it’s revealed Ridley was simply a cog in Estefa Dora’s machine to get people to lose faith in the Splatoon and Government

  • Hate Sink: There is nothing likable or redeemable about Lewis Coltrane, who not only is an absolute Xenophobe and a mad scientist who is willing to get people killed out of sheer pettiness.
    • Mayor Ridley, while not appearing until the thrid act, is set up like complete scum, who barely ran Inkopolis, passed racist and homophobic laws, and caused the mass murder of innocents including the Old Agent 3. This is subverted however, as it’s revealed that Ridley has mellowed out in prison and is genuinely a nice person, who was simply a cog in Estefa’s bigger plan

  • Karma Houdini: The Lovers managed to escape during the fight at Octo Valley and presumably are in hiding in the Splat Lands

  • Luxury Prison Suite: Mayor Ridley, despite serving 30 years in maximum prison, as a very good prison place, complete with books, wine, AC, spa treatment, and a TV with gaming stuff.

  • Mysterious Note: What kickstarts part 2, as the a mysterious note explaining that many people are kidnapped in Splatsville leads to the Splatoon and Misa’s friends traveling.

  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Sally being the much more brash and stoic type biker chick while Isa Raines, while can get her hands dirty, is pretty bubbly and feminine.

  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: A frequently discussed trope with the more heroic characters, especially with covering up Cassie’s mass murder, in which while they realize the morality is bad and they regret it, it was out of good for wanting to give people hope. Also with Sebastian and Claudia wanting to commit illegal voting systems to get Sebastian to stay in office, in order to keep Eddie out
