And then, suddenly, there was colour."

The Jewellery Box contains the following tropes:

  • And I Must Scream: What the Mane 6 are going through at the beginning of the story. Implied that this will happen to Spike if he doesn't properly grow up.
  • The Chosen One: Spike is the only one who can use the Elements of Harmony.
  • Comical Overreacting: Rarity reacts to being a necklace for 500 years rather badly. Mostly because she's only an accessory.
  • Composite Character: Discord caused Luna to become Nightmare Moon again and then took Nightmare Moon's power for himself becoming Nightmare Discord.
  • Growing Up Sucks: Spike has put off growing up for four hundred years because of this.
  • Hearing Voices: The Mane 6 start out at the beginning of the story as disembodied voices. Spike hears them initially after taking the Elements of Harmony. Later on he learns to speak to them properly, but worries that this is a side effect of his greed growth.
  • Advertisement:
  • I Cannot Self-Terminate: Before accepting the Elements of Harmony, Spike makes Celestia promise to kill him if becomes a mindless hoarding dragon.
  • Info Dump: A frustrated Pinkie Pie snaps and dumps some info on Spike.
  • Our Souls Are Different: Being in the Elements of Harmony and being in darkness has caused the mane six to forget almost everything.
    • When invoked, they stop being floating consciousnesses and have some ethereal body.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Spike is *still* in his baby dragon form, even after 500 years because he fears going mindless if he lets his greed go out of control
  • Resigned to the Call: Spike is quite reluctant on taking on the mantel of Equestria's guardian.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: The Elements of Harmony contain the Elements of Harmony
  • Spirit Advisor: Once he learns to perceive them, the Mane Six take on this role for Spike.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: Spike mourns the loss of his friends because they died hundreds of years ago. His desire to have them back is what triggers his greed growth again, but because he feels he can never really have them back he retains his rational mind.
