In the year 2015, a war between the United States and the Queen's Forces has been raging on and off for the past 30 years. However, it's not regular humans that the military has been fighting. A race of half human, half animal hybrids sometimes called "monster girls" made their self known to the world when they suddenly appeared all those years ago and fought desperately for land. After years of war the US has been pushed entirely out of the west to mid-west and walled off parts of itself off to keep the general populous out of harm's way.

When three friends receive a letter stating their friend has been KIA'd, they decide to dodge the draft to fight the enemy head on. Once past the wall and after rescuing an old friend, nothing appears to be how they were told. Joining up with the air force under the command of a salamander general, Vulcaria Von Brandenburg, the friends and others they met along the way form a new covert group called the "Young Amateurs". They must travel to California by year's end in hopes of killing the monster girl's queen and ending this age old war once and for all. In a unit filled with dark pasts, unlikely friendships, and high tempers, hostiles are the least of their worries.

MGO contains examples of:

  • Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: After a tear filled reunion with his once thought dead daughter Cara, General Grant Stoutzer finds out she's "engaged" to the man who injured him in Part 1. Needless to say he is less than pleased that his "Little Slushy" is thinking of marriage at all.
  • Destructive Romance: When Levi finds out her "husband" has been sneaking out to see another girl, she is upset to the point where she physically lashes out against him. The reason he was seeing someone else? To him Levi only treated him as a toy, and they never talked about their interests, so he needed emotional fulfillment. Someone that felt like an actual girlfriend rather than a friend with benefits.
  • Her Heart Will Go On: Played straight in Act 3 when Cara believes her fiance is dead. Rather than grieve, she throws on his BDUs bancho style and gives Veronica a Jojo-esque beat down until she fixes him.
  • Hollywood Kiss: Subverted multiple times in Act 2. Junsui accidentally bumps teeth during hers, and Alexandria bites her own tongue.
  • I Didn't Mean to Turn You On: Cara does this in Act 2 when her voice slips into a sultry one around her crush.
  • Interspecies Romance: Every single romantic relationship in the story is one of these.
  • It's Not You, It's My Enemies: Cody's excuse for not accepting Junsui's first confession in Act 2.
  • Love Triangle: Levi, Anais, and Brit are just one example of many.
  • Mafia Princess: Much to everyone's surprise Alexandria's mother turns out to be head of a mafia gang that modeled themselves after old gangs like Al Capone's.

  • Red String of Fate: Played literally in Act 1 when Junsui ties a red piece of yarn around her tail and then the other end to her crush's belt loop. This is so they don't get lost when they split up to search a research facility. Definitely no symbolism there.
  • Sleep Cute: Auya is frequently seen cuddling in her sleep with her adopted mother and father over the course of the story. Also occurs in Act 2 when a drunk, knight roleplaying Alexandria falls asleep on her "Prince's" chest.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: By dodging the draft the three friends cannot return home to their families for fear of execution by law.
