JLApe: Gorilla Warfare! was a DC Comics Crisis Crossover taking place in several Annual issues that were printed in Fall 1999, the plot concerning the apes of Gorilla City declaring war against the rest of the world and intending to transform all of humanity into apes.

After a prelude in the 19th issue of Legends of the DC Universe, the saga continued in the third Annual of JLA (1997), the 23rd Annual of Batman (1940), the fifth Annual of Aquaman (1994), the eighth Annual of Wonder Woman (1987), the twelfth Annual of The Flash, the 11th Annual of Superman (1987) and the eighth Annual of Green Lantern before wrapping up the story in the second Annual of Martian Manhunter.

JLApe: Gorilla Warfare! provides examples of:

  • Big Bad: Gorilla Grodd is the mastermind behind the plot of turning all humanity into apes.
  • False Flag Operation: The Gorilla City militia Simian Scarlet kill Solovar and frame a human supremacist group as being responsible as a pretext for their agenda.
  • Forced Transformation: The premise of the crossover event is that humanity, Wonder Woman, Superman, Wally West, Kyle Rayner, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter have all been turned into apes.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: J'onn J'onzz is able to resist the mental conditioning intended to make him hostile to the human race and uses his telepathy to help his fellow Leaguers resist it as well.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: The whole conflict starts with Solovar's assassination.
  • Pun-Based Title: The subtitle is a play on "guerrilla warfare".
