Isobel Lanley
A sixteen year old highschool student and a popular cheerleader.
- Broken Bird: In Enshadowed, after failing to rescue Varen, she slowly slips into becoming one.
- Character Development: In Nevermore she goes from a self-centered mean girl to taking a level in kindness.
- Cool Big Sis: Danny, her twelve year old brother, is one of the few people Isobel genuinely cares about.
- Cruel Cheerleader: Pre-character development Isobel is a rather mean, popular cheerleader, but by the time of the second book this trope is pretty much downplayed.
- Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold
- Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Isobel rejects her boyfriend Brad in favor of Varen Nethers, who despite his demeanour is actually a nice guy.
Varen Nethers
- Be Careful What You Wish For: The freaky creatures Varen created in his notebooks and mind eventually come to life and lock him away in a world he himself created.
- Broken Bird: A rare male example; Varen is a cynical loner troubled by his mother's death, his stepparents' neglect and being bullied.
- Byronic Hero: Played straight; a Tall, Dark, and Handsome teenager with a cynical attitude and a thing for gothic poetry.
- Dark and Troubled Past: The death of Madeline Nethers, parental neglect and bullying definitely count.
- Defrosting Ice King: In Nevermore he at first seems to be an aloof loner, but gradually warms up to Isobel.
- Distressed Dude: After being Trapped in Another World.
- Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette:
- Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: Due to being a goth and a loner, Varen is widely regarded as rather creepy and off-putting. As Isobel later finds out, he's a nice person, unlike some of the popular kids.
- Trapped in Another World
Gwen Daniels
Brad Bolgan
- Asshole Victim: In the climax of Nevermore he is attacked by one of the freaky creatures from Poe's stories and ends up with a broken leg. Moreover, due to this injury he can't do sports anymore.
