• Awful Wedded Life: Her marriage to Jack was empty and cold.
• Butt-Monkey: Sarah has a tough time of it: her only good fortune on the show comes from a very successful operation, which of course comes from a terrible traffic accident. It doesn't change the fact that she lost her first fiance in the immediate aftermath of said accident, married someone she didn't love, endured a cold, unhappy marriage which resulted in divorce and then found herself getting stalked by her ex-husband whose obsession with her lingers for years.
• Deadpan Snarker: She certainly had her moments. After her break-up with Jack, however, she becomes much more closed off.
  "It's okay. I know I'm not going to be dancing anymore. I can still roll around at my wedding."
• Florence Nightingale Effect: Her relationship with Jack was entirely this: she was grateful and considered him a hero, he considered her to be a patient that needed caring for. They mistook it as love, and got married.

Jack's best friend since childhood. On one occasion, Jack unsuccessfully attempted to defend him against schoolyard bullies and was also beaten.

• Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: It's a minor example, but despite being Jack's 'best friend' he isn't seen after his flashback appearance.
• Deadpan Snarker: In his brief appearance.

• Performance Anxiety: He has to get slightly drunk to perform his Best Man's Speech, but he does it for Jack.
  "I'll be fine. After about 8 beers, I'll be fine."

Sarah Shephard's fiancé at the time of her accident. Jack informed him of her accident, current condition, and subsequent paralysis. Kevin asked if they would still be able to make love, but became distressed when Jack informed him that she may need professional care for the rest of her life. He stopped visiting and left her life not long afterwards.

• Disposable Fiancé: He only appears in one scene, and it's made very clear that he's not going to stick around for Sarah if it's an inconvenience.
• It's All About Me: He's concerned mostly with his needs, and how Sarah's accident affects him. He asks a few standard questions in a disinterested tone, then tries to find out whether she'll be able to have sex after the surgery. And when he hears she'll need professional care, he's out.
  Jack: There will be ongoing physical therapy, but if she works really hard -
  Kevin: Well, well, will we be able to, you know, make love?
  Jack: You need to know that there's a chance Sarah might very well need professional care for the rest of her life.
  Kevin: Like, she won't be able to go to the bathroom by herself?
