"the laser beam projects a powerful image of New Zealand. I believe my design is so powerful it does not need to be discussed."
— The official description of the flag.
The Laser Kiwi flag was designed by Lucy Gray for the 2015-2016 New Zealand flag referendums as a proposed redesign. The flag features a kiwi shooting lasers out of its eyes by a New Zealand fern over a black background. The flag has become infamous and beloved due to its hilarious yet cool design, with many wanting it to become the official flag of New Zealand.
Tropes:
- Artistic License – Ornithology: In real life, no Kiwi has the ability to shoot lasers of any kind.
- Eye Beams: The most unique part of the flag is that the Kiwi is shooting a green laser beam from its eyes.
- Glowing Eyes: The kiwi's eyes are glowing green as it shoots out lasers.
- Killer Rabbit: The flag features an adorable kiwi that would be assumed harmless. However, this kiwi is shown to be a major threat due to the lasers it shoots from its eyes.
- Rule of Funny: Why would anyone put a laser-shooting Kiwi on New Zealand's flag? Because it's so nonsensical on something that ought to be Serious Business that ends up being funny.
- Stylistic Suck: While it isn't accurate to say that it sucks, Lucy Gray purposely designed it to be low-effort and bizarre.
