* BaseBreakingCharacter: Some of the Capcom characters returning from ''Ultimate VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom3'' ([[VideoGame/FinalFight Haggar]], [[VideoGame/GhostsAndGoblins Arthur, Firebrand]], [[Franchise/ResidentEvil Chris, Nemesis]], [[VideoGame/DeadRising Frank West]], and [[VideoGame/BionicCommando Spencer]] [[note]]The latter is an odd case. While ''Bionic Commando'' is considered a classic, the 2009 installment, which features this version of Spencer, isn't well-regarded, so his claim to fame is specifically from ''Marvel vs. Capcom 3'''s competitive play; and they do have the 3D model from the better received ''Rearmed'' design as DLC in ''[=UMvC3=]''.[[/note]]) are well-appreciated by fans of Creator/{{Capcom}}'s classic library and players who use them for the gameplay, but are also seen as puzzling choices by the uninitiated observers who expected only current/mainstream characters, especially some Capcom characters that are viewed as superior to them. Not helping by the fact that all of the characters mentioned (save for Chris) don't do much in the story.

* TakeThatScrappy: ''VideoGame/BionicCommando 2009'' wasn't exactly one of Capcom's most popular titles, and quite a few fans consider this version of Nathan "Radd" Spencer as a waste of a slot. That said, when several of the heroes fight a symbiote when it went {{Kaiju}}, Spencer gets bitch slapped by the symbiote while the rest damage it.

** Monster Hunter has been christened the "U N G A W A I F U". This stems from another [[UsefulNotes/FightingGameCommunity FGC]] meme (originally from ''Memes/GuiltyGear'') where big characters with lots of [[ImmuneToFlinching armor]] and far reaching normals, who are able to do a lot of damage with minimal execution are called "UNGA" or "U N G A B O I S" (based on a sound commonly associated with gorillas and cavemen). Based on her trailer, Monster Hunter seems to fit the mold, with the added bonus of being a girl.

** In November 2016, there were rumors floating around the Internet that Capcom was developing "''Marvel vs. Capcom 4''," complete with fake screenshots and a teaser. While said screenshots and teaser were proved to be false, it did get many fans thinking that a fourth installment really was in the works.[[note]]It helps that this was after ''VideoGame/DisneyInfinity'' was given the axe and Disney began outsourcing the Marvel license to other studios again, which resulted in ''VideoGame/MarvelUltimateAlliance'' getting re-released and the announcement of [[VideoGame/SpiderManPS4 a new Spider-Man game]] being developed by Creator/InsomniacGames.[[/note]] This was proven true when ''Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite'' was announced during the [=PlayStation=] Experience event in December 2016.
** Most fans were able to guess that the main villain would be a fusion of Ultron and Sigma because of the stinger in the announcement trailer.
** Roster leaks aside, the involvement of the Infinity Stones in the Story Mode led many to predict that Thanos would also be in the game, either as part of the roster or at the very least as an NPC in the Story Mode. The former ended up being true.
** Many fans correctly guessed that the Soul Stone would be able to revive characters after their health bars have been depleted, as this is the first ''MVC'' game to have the defeated characters visibly unconscious in the background instead of simply having them disappear.
** For several months, many fans couldn't figure out who Mega Man X's voice actor was. [[https://www.reddit.com/r/mvci/comments/6tdgw5/ted_sroka_is_likely_the_voice_for_x/ At least]] [[http://www.rockman-corner.com/2017/06/mega-man-x-talks-and-zero-appears-in.html?showComment=1497401919529#c2689727265702823592 two fans]] were quietly able to guess that it was Ted Sroka before it was confirmed in September 2017.

* QuestionableCasting:
** Some of the returning Marvel characters were subjected to TheOtherDarrin to bring in their voice actors from ''WesternAnimation/AvengersAssemble'' and ''WesternAnimation/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy2015'', with Creator/TrevorDevall as Rocket Raccoon being singled out by fans as a step down from Creator/GregEllis in the previous game. What is more confusing is the mish-mash of Marvel voice actors which involves certain characters (Captain America, Hawkeye, Iron Man) having their roles reprised by their actors from older works like ''WesternAnimation/TheAvengersEarthsMightiestHeroes'' and ''Marvel vs. Capcom 3'', while others (Thor, Rocket Raccoon, Doctor Strange) have new voices from their more recent animated appearances.
** As hype-worthy as X finally being introduced in the game is, many consider his new voice actor, Ted Sroka, to be a huge step down from his previous voice actor, Creator/MarkGatha [[note]]who is no longer active as an actor and currently working as a medical doctor in Eastern Canada[[/note]]. It also probably doesn't help that Sroka's other known role is [[JokeCharacter Dan Hibiki]] in ''VideoGame/StreetFighterIV''.
** Chris Tergliafera as Sigma, due to his voice being [[{{Narm}} based on how he sounded in]] ''VideoGame/MegaManX4''. While ''Super Ultra VideoGame/DeadRising3 Arcade Remix Hyper Edition Ex Plus Alpha'' also used it and the dialogue for Chuck's costume of him, it's likely that it was done as a ''parody'' to match the rest of the DLC's purposely silly nature.
** Creator/VanessaMarshall as Gamora, who reprised her role from the 2015 ''Guardians of the Galaxy'' series. While her performance is just fine in that show, the delivery of her battle lines in this game makes her sound bored, as if she isn't in a heated battle. There's also Creator/GreyDeLisle as Captain Marvel, as her battle grunts and yells sound like she isn't the trained fighter she's supposed to be. As mentioned above, other voice actors have similar delivery issues, with several fans blaming the voice director for said issues.

* HighTierScrappy:
** Dante: If you play online, you'll run into Dante 90% of the time because he's just as good as he was in ''[=MvC3=]'' thanks to his easy chain combos, lockdowns, and ability to respond to just about everything. In fact, he was so good that the 12/5/17 patch gave him some ''serious'' nerfs, from decreasing his health, overall damage, and jacking up the recovery frames on his moves. But despite the nerfs, he's ''still'' considered the best character in the game because his playstyle is still extremely oppressive.
** Dormammu: In addition to all of Dormammu's projectiles from ''[=MvC3=]'', he has a new move (nicknamed "The Carpet" by players) where he causes burning vines to appear on the ground. It hits the entire screen, and even if you block it you'll still get pulled into melee range very quickly; for this reason you'll see Dormammu paired with Dante a lot, since the Carpet can be used to set up Dante's combos.
** The Reality Stone is a GameBreaker Surge and Storm make it the Stones' biggest offender in terms of ComplacentGamingSyndrome online, to the point where it had to be nerfed greatly in a post-launch patch.

* LowTierLetdown:
** The Mind Stone's Storm (which simply refills your Hyper Combo Gauge) is widely seen as underwhelming and almost useless compared to those of the other Stones. And its Surge (a basic, dizzying, telekinetic slam), while better-regarded and seen as actually useful, nevertheless suffers from mediocrity in comparison to what the other Stones can do.
** Chris, on top of having limited mobility compared to other characters, has projectiles that are ineffective and easy-to-reflect via push-blocking. However, as of the 1/18/18 patch (''which gave him a ton of buffs''), Chris has since found himself on the opposite end of the spectrum -- now he's an absolute annoyance to fight because of his keep-away gameplay, similar to Cable's run-and-gun strategy in ''VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom2''.

* TierInducedScrappy:
** Quite a few top-tier characters have been getting this, mainly due to their being overused and annoying to fight:
*** Dante: If you play online, you'll run into him 90% of the time because he's just as good as he was in ''[=MvC3=]'' thanks to his easy chain combos, lockdowns, and ability to respond to just about everything. But despite the nerfs, he's ''still'' considered the best character in the game because his playstyle is still extremely oppressive.
*** Zero: The changes to the game's damage-scaling and hitstun mechanics means that Zero loses the ability to reliably reduce his opponent's HP to zero with his infamous "Lightning Loop" from the previous game. However, he's been made even ''better'' in other areas to compensate, gaining the ability to cancel his Z-Buster into a variety of new moves that let him fill the screen with projectiles and a new super that's practically invincible.
*** Gamora: Her basic gun projectiles hit fast, go through just about every other projectile, and she can chain the Arc Fire leaping shot into itself multiple times, giving her a nigh-invincible approach game.
*** Dormammu: In addition to all his projectiles from ''[=MvC3=]'', he has a new move (nicknamed "The Carpet" by players) where he causes burning vines to appear on the ground. It hits the entire screen, and even if you block it you'll still get pulled into melee range very quickly; for this reason you'll see Dormammu paired with Dante a lot, since the Carpet can be used to set up Dante's combos.

* HoYay: Ultron and Sigma's team-up begins with them at eachother's throats for the former's intrusion into the city mainframe... but quickly turns to the two of them ''complimenting eachother's coding'' once they realize that fighting would just kill them both. Ultron in particular comparing Sigma's to a poem with a tone of disbelief and endearment before they begin to make plans to usurp Thanos and take over both worlds. The entire scene plays out like the genocidal AI version of planning to elope.

When the community manager explained that there were other characters with similar movesets, the common response was that the movesets weren't the issue: [[SarcasmMode surprisingly]], in a massive multi-franchise crossover fighting game, fans just want to play with all their favorite characters and see them interact with others.

Misuse. Can't waste a character/plot that is not even in the work to begin with. Some of these are also pure complaining.

** Scrutiny aside and basically "They Wasted a Perfectly Good Roster":
*** The idea of the Marvel roster being based around the MCU and its related works showed some promise. Not only could it have brought in characters with potentially interesting movesets like ComicBook/{{Loki}}, ComicBook/{{Daredevil}}, and the Cinematic Universe's version of Vulture, it also presented the opportunity to expand/update the movesets of existing characters. [[note]]To a degree this did happen with some of the returning Marvel cast, such as Captain America getting a counter special, Spider-Man getting a kick special and Iron Man modifying his previous Repulsor Blast and Smart Bomb specials to function completely differently.[[/note]] It also could have alleviated the "no mutants" controversy by including ComicBook/{{Quicksilver}} and ComicBook/ScarletWitch, the two mutants who popped up in the MCU.
*** There are also a number of fans who felt that even if the X-Men were off-limits, there were a number of fan-favorite characters who still could've been used, such as [[ComicBook/MsMarvel2014 Ms. Marvel]] and ComicBook/DoctorOctopus. This is doubly true for the Capcom side, as quite a few fans were surprised by the lack of characters like Leon from ''Franchise/ResidentEvil'' and Nero from ''VideoGame/DevilMayCry'', not to mention cult characters who seemed almost tailor made for a fighting game like Gene from ''VideoGame/GodHand'' and the title character of ''VideoGame/AsurasWrath''.
** More like "Wasted a Good Character Concept", but there are several Black Panther fans that wonder why his moveset mainly consists of claw slashing attacks and absolutely nothing from his vibranium weaponry and tech, along with kinetic energy absorption and release through his suit. Nothing in ''[=MvCI=]'' indicates that his suit is even made of vibranium, which is a signature part of his arsenal. With the amount of control Marvel had in making sure Doctor Strange was represented faithfully starting with ''[=UMvC3=]'', it's odd how they didn't do the same for Black Panther.

** The small roster selection ends up clashing horribly with the magnitude of the situation the story mode is trying to present, as it just feels like a small group of heroes are the only one left to take on the threats presented. The fact that most of the [=NPCs=] are regulated to either background threats for special matches or bystanders only adds to this. Many noted the irony of how this game got a story mode and yet ''[=MvC3=]'', which had a much larger cast and potential to tell a epic story, only had an ExcusePlot.

** Considering it's a crossover fighting game that revolves around {{Mineral MacGuffin}}s -- one of them literally sharing a name with the franchise, no less -- the fact that nobody from ''VideoGame/PowerStone'' appears or is even alluded to comes off as a ''huge'' wasted opportunity.
** This game also has a story that similar to that of ''VideoGame/DemonsCrest'', which provided a good opportunity for characters from that game such as Phalanx and General Arma to appear or even alluded to in ''Infinite'' but this does not happen.

** The mobile licensed game ''VideoGame/MarvelContestOfChampions'' garnered a bit of attention due to a number of its character animations being copied from some of Capcom's games (notably shown in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHaPl_pXKak this video]], ComicBook/MilesMorales and ComicBook/LukeCage have copied animations from [[VideoGame/StreetFighterV Chun-Li]] and [[VideoGame/StreetFighterIV Cody]]), leading to debates on whether Marvel was blatantly plagiarizing Capcom's games or simply throwing in a nod to the ''[=MvC=]'' series, and whether this would end up hurting the two companies' relationship. Apparently, with the announcement of ''Infinite'', it either didn't hurt their relationship or the two buried the hatchet.
** In November 2016, screenshots of ''Marvel vs. Capcom 4'' circulated on the Internet, causing fans to wonder if they were real or fake. It was the latter. A few days after the hoax was exposed, Capcom announced ''Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite'', the real next installment in the series.
** The reveal trailer features [[ComicBook/MsMarvel Captain Marvel]] and ComicBook/IronMan as Marvel's reps...right in the middle of ''ComicBook/CivilWarII'', which features a rivalry that turns violent between the two characters.
** Possibly doubling as a MythologyGag, when ''VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom2'' was re-released on the [=PlayStation=] 3 and Xbox 360, Iron Man and VideoGame/{{Mega Man|Classic}} were depicted as each other's rivals in [[http://www.creativeuncut.com/gallery-11/mvc2-comic-mega-man-vs-iron-man.html the accompanying]] [[http://www.creativeuncut.com/gallery-11/mvc2-vs-iron-man_mega-man.html promotional art]]. Come ''Infinite'', Iron Man is now rivals with [[VideoGame/MegaManX a different Mega Man]].
** In the ''ComicBook/SpiderVerse'' {{Crossover}} event, [[http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/marveldatabase/images/e/ea/Peter_Parker_%28Earth-30847%29_death_from_Spider-Verse_Vol_1_2.jpg the MvC Spider-Man was killed off]], which had some fans wondering if he's going to be in this game, and [[ContinuitySnarl whether or not they’re going to bother explaining how he's alive]]. [[note]]Spidey's death in ''Spider-Verse'' may have something to do with the fact that around that time, with the exception of ''Franchise/KingdomHearts'', Disney was cutting off ties to other video game publishers and giving most of the video game rights to [[Creator/ElectronicArts EA]]. A lot of Marvel games from other publishers like Activision were being [[http://www.pcgamer.com/marvel-pulls-deadpool-from-steam/ removed from digital distribution around this time.]][[/note]] The game is a soft ContinuityReboot of the series, meaning that ''Spider-Verse'' most likely has no bearing on the games, and [[http://comicbook.com/gaming/2017/07/20/four-new-characters-join-marvel-vs-capcom-infinite-including-spi/ Spidey was eventually confirmed as a playable character in this game]].
** This marks the [[VideoGame/ProjectXZone second time]] [[VideoGame/DevilMayCry Dante]] and [[VideoGame/{{Darkstalkers}} Jedah]] can fight each other after the latter's ending in ''VideoGame/CapcomFightingEvolution''. Their meeting in the story mode even [[https://i.imgur.com/r6Jbgv0.jpg mirrors]] that first encounter.
** Remember how, in ''VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom3'', M.O.D.O.K. insulted Nemesis by calling him a failed experiment? Well, [[spoiler:it seems to be no longer the case in Story Mode, as M.O.D.O.K. considers him a success. Then again, M.O.D.O.K. said he rebuilt Nemesis so of course he's going to fan his own ego]].
** This makes the second time Sigma attempted to merge Capcom universes together -- the first was in ''ComicBook/SonicTheHedgehogMegaManWorldsUnite''.
** In ''VideoGame/MegaManX8'', Belial Sigma looks vaguely Ultronesque. 13 years later, we have Ultron-Sigma.

** The final boss of Story Mode has Captain Marvel and Dante teaming up, which became this as both ''VideoGame/DevilMayCry5'' and ''Film/{{Captain Marvel|2019}}'' came out on the same day (March 8th, 2019).

** The game is referred as "''Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Lite''" in some circles due to the minimalist roster and style which some feel is just a watered down version of the third game.

** Some feel Rocket Raccoon's [[Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy "Ain't no thing like me, 'cept me!"]] line was shoehorned into the game. Even the game's marketing team appears to hold this view, as [[https://twitter.com/marvelvscapcom/status/860509421222350848 Rocket's official teaser]] uploaded to ''Infinite'''s official Twitter page (which featured the aforementioned line prominently near the end) was given [[SelfDeprecation self-deprecating]] hashtags like [[LampshadeHanging "#ShamelessPlug" and "#MovieTieIn"]].

** Morrigan's face got some pretty heavy backlash. Problems include her being rather inexpressive with dead looking eyes, her lack of visible eyebrows, caused both by them being poorly defined and covered by her HimeCut, and lack of makeup. She was also given fangs in this game, which normally would result in a CuteLittleFangs effect on her, but this combined with the problems with her face make the fangs look less charming and only serve to make her look more creepy, which is ''not'' the desired effect of a [[HornyDevils succubus]].

** After the fiascos that had heavily torn the ''Franchise/MegaMan'' fanbase apart over the years,[[note]]Such as the complaints about the lack of any variant of [[LegacyCharacter Mega Man]] representing the ''Franchise/MegaMan'' franchise in [[VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom3 the previous game]] ([[VideoGame/MegaManLegends Tron Bonne]] and [[VideoGame/MegaManX Zero]] being the only representatives), as well as the controversial decision to include [[FightingClown "Bad Box Art" Mega Man]] as a JokeCharacter in ''VideoGame/StreetFighterXTekken'', all in the wake of the cancellation of widely-anticipated games such as ''VideoGame/MegaManLegends 3'' and ''Mega Man Universe''.[[/note]] VideoGame/MegaManX was ''the very first'' character shown in the trailer, and thus announced for the game. Not long after that, the main villain was revealed to be a FusionDance of Marvel's Ultron and ''Mega Man X'''s Sigma, and Zero was announced as a returning character.
** The official [=PlayStation=] blog for the game specified that it would have "a variety of exciting and accessible single player modes," no doubt alleviating any fears that the game [[CasualCompetitiveConflict would be catered significantly towards professional players and released with little-to-no single player content]], like what initially happened with ''VideoGame/StreetFighterV''.
** After ''Marvel vs. Capcom 3'' was criticized for failing to deliver on its promise of a "robust," fully-fledged story despite being released at a time where multiple fighters preceding it or put out around the same period had moved beyond {{Excuse Plot}}s, ''Infinite's'' development team stressed that the game would have an extensive and immersive cinematic Story Mode.
** [[http://www.ign.com/articles/2017/02/24/dice-2017-marvel-games-to-tell-original-stories-not-held-to-canon This IGN interview with Bill Rosemann of Marvel Games,]] noted that Marvel licensed games, Infinite included, would not be required to tie in to the comics or the Marvel Cinematic Universe and would have the freedom to create their own storyline. Not only did this mean the story mode of ''Infinite'' wouldn't fall into the same trap of copying the movies that ''WesternAnimation/AvengersAssemble'' did, but in terms of the roster, it also meant that non-MCU characters were more likely, possibly including characters affected by the then-rumored Fox ban. This promise technically came true because (as of the game's launch) Nova had not yet appeared in any MCU-associated productions (though the Nova Corps itself had); furthermore, Dormammu and Thor don't have their MCU designs.
** After the widely negative response to the E3 2017 trailer over the uneven quality of the character models (Chun-Li's in particular had been universally criticized, especially in regards to her unnatural-looking face), Yoshinori Ono [[https://twitter.com/fchampryan/status/874708206093651968 promised that the graphics would be tweaked before the release of the game]]. Sure enough, come the Full Story trailer, the most glaring example of bad design (Chun-Li's face) was fixed.
** Earlier trailers were criticized for the muted color palette in contrast to the colorful comic book style of ''Marvel vs. Capcom 3''. Come the E3 2017 trailers, all the characters were noticeably brighter and more vibrant.
** ''VideoGame/MarvelSuperHeroes'''s Reality Gem received some flak for mostly just giving you some elemental projectiles. [[note]]And making [[ComicBook/GhostRider Blackheart]] an InvisibleMan for a while.[[/note]] Here, FireIceLightning is still the Reality Stone's main gimmick, but now it's taken up to eleven as an all-out FieldPowerEffect and MoreDakka -- to the point where some even see it as a GameBreaker.
** The auto-combo feature was contested by fans who considered them a case of TheyChangedItNowItSucks (though optional auto modes had been in Capcom games [[OlderThanTheyThink since]] ''VideoGame/XMenChildrenOfTheAtom'' if not earlier). In an E3 livestream, it was noted that there would be an option to turn them off. Regardless, the auto-combo feature is really just there to introduce newer players, as it doesn't even give the most effective combos.
** After ''VideoGame/DeadRising4'' upset fans of the ''Dead Rising'' series for [[TheyChangedItNowItSucks changing Frank West's voice actor and personality]], among other things, Frank returns here with his original persona and is once again voiced by T.J. Rotolo.
** ComicBook/BlackWidow and the female VideoGame/MonsterHunter becoming DLC characters may be this to those who complained about the lack of females on the roster, though Widow also added more fuel to the fire for those complaining about Marvel's half focusing almost exclusively on the MCU.
** After the Marvel side was criticized for not reusing any of the characters' older themes, the credits themes were revealed to be remixes of Captain America and Spider-Man's classic themes.
