[[WMG: Zaheer is originally from the Si Wong desert.]]
* His name is derived from Arabic and the Si Wong tribes are the Avatar world's [[FantasyCounterpartCulture Arab equivalent]].
* The Si Wong tribes have cultural similarities to the Air Nomads. Both are loosely-organized, nomadic tribes and communes.
* The sandbenders possibly studied the Air Nomads to create the bending style that powers their sand-sailers. This could be how Zaheer learned about the Air Nomads.

[[WMG: Unalaq is the overall BigBad of the series.]]
While each chapter has its own unique BigBad with their own motives (unlike ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender'' in which every ArcVillain is committing heinous acts on Ozai's behalf), it's very clear that the entire series would have ''never happened'' had Unalaq never existed, or was twisted in morality. He indirectly caused the events of the first season to happen after his attempt to kidnap Korra resulted in her being sheltered in the south for her entire life, only escaping and fleeing to Republic City to learn airbending from Tenzin; when she finally went to the city, she fell into conflict with the Equalists, and Amon took her bending. Unalaq was directly behind the events of the second season, as well as season 3 when he caused many including Zaheer to gain airbending, which he used to break the rest of the Red Lotus out of their prisons. Zaheer ended up killing the Earth Queen, which led to Kuvira gaining power (in addition to the spirit vines almost killing numerous main characters including Jinora, and also, the spirit vines also being used by Kuvira to create her superweapon, the dramatic horcrux of the season), thus Unalaq indirectly caused the events of the fourth season. On top of being Korra's complete opposite as the Dark Avatar and doing it all for the franchise's GreaterScopeVillain, Vaatu, it wouldn't be much of a surprise if creators confirmed him as the overall main antagonist.

** (note: not the OP) On the one hand Zaheer would still has his wind/flight powers since Korra couldn't take them away and he would be a good match for Kuvira; on the other he probably was executed since I can't think of any safe way isolate him from air (coma maybe? Help me out, Wiki/SCPFoundation people!).

Unalaq is will be the BigBad of Season 2. He's the one behind summoning the spirits with possibly Desna and Eska as his [[CoDragon Co Dragons]]. He may be trying to manipulate Korra's status as the Avatar to further his own goals or to spread his own beliefs of spirituality and to do this he has to get Korra on his side. Solution? Create a problem where seemingly be is the only one who can give Korra the knowledge to overcome it (as demonstrated by his special waterbending abilities which seem to soothe the angry spirits) and at the same time he can alienate her from Tenzin and her other mentors so she is put further under his influence.

[[WMG: Unalaq suggested the kidnapping Korra plan hoping it would fail.]]

The Red Lotus is firmly against world leaders and that presumably wouldn’t have excluded the Water Tribe Chief just because he was one of them. So he proposed the plan to kidnap Korra and tipped his brother off about it so that it would fail and get the other Red Lotus members arrested. Thus, Unalaq successfully betrayed the Red Lotus before they could betray him.

However, he still believed releasing Vaatu was best for the world so he came up with his own plan for that.

Nice Hat is no longer a trope

As [[http://avatar.wikia.com/wiki/Thread:1306932 this post]] postulates, Hundun met the Red Lotus founder Xai Bau in the Spirit World and convinces him that the current order and the Avatar were not good for the world so that there would be an organization to oppose the current incarnation of his eternal enemy. The biggest piece of evidence is the symbol on the front of the Hunden's NiceHat, it's almost identical to the Red Lotus symbol. When he was freed after the portals were left open, the top members of his organization were imprisoned or in hiding, so he used the Triads and Equalists instead.
