* OffModel: In contrast to the old Gameboy games, most Pokémon sprites accurately match their official artwork. There are still a select few that don't, though:
** Mr. Mime still has FourFingeredHands, even the artwork always depicted it with five. It has the right number of fingers in ''Emerald''.
** Deoxys', Snorlax's and Nosepass' proportions look somewhat deformed. Deoxys also has FourFingeredHands, as does Dusclops. As it stands, Snorlax's sprite is the only one not in the Hoenn dex to be changed in ''Emerald''.
** Banette's zipper mouth is drawn to look like it is foaming, not even matching its official art.
** Due to a majority of them not available in normal gameplay [[note]]there were no hints on remakes when ''Ruby'' and ''Sapphire'' were first released[[/note]] the older Pokémon are oddly shaded/drawn compared to the ones debuted in Hoenn. While the first 151 are polished for ''[=FireRed=]'' and ''[=LeafGreen=]'', ''Emerald'' reused their OffModel sprites from ''Ruby'' and ''Sapphire'' for some reason. ** [[http://i.imgur.com/JB56dSY.jpg The Regi Trio's overworld sprites]] look nothing like how they actually look like. This is made more glaring by the fact that more accurate graphics exist for the three as Japan-exclusive [[http://imgur.com/a/R2QLD e-Reader Poké Dolls]].
** One piece of official art depicts the back of Brendan's head as white, suggesting that his beanie is actually his hair.
** Juan's overworld sprite looks very different from how he actually looks like, as that sprite was merely an edit of Champion Steven's.

* BroadStrokes:
** Having the event Shiny Beldum (evolved or not) in your team unlocks dialogue such as Steven mentioning having fought Rayquaza alongside [[http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Alain a young male trainer with a black Charizard]].
** Wallace may show up in Master Rank Contests after defeating [[spoiler:his niece Lisia in one]], and had been noticed to once be great within contest and in fact, was the one who coached Lisia when it comes to contest (she had since surpassed him in terms of skills). Wallace's anime counterpart once hosted a a major contest, and his counterpart in ''Manga/PokemonAdventures'' was also a known Coordinator.

* {{Foil}}: The two daycares of the game serve as foils to each other in terms of the daycare couples' respective ages, with the daycare on Route 117 still being run by an old couple and the one in the Battle Resort being run by two children.

* SnakeVersusMongoose: This game introduces the serpentine Seviper and the herpestid Zangoose. Their Pokédex entries emphasize the bitter enmity between them.

* BareYourMidriff: One particular Aqua grunt in the Special Demo calls attention to her midriff, saying that she has more style than she knows what to do with. Then there's Aqua Admin Shelly, who's midriff cuts into the A symbol of her uniform.

* FranchiseCodifier: ''Ruby and Sapphire'' established the formula for the series' plots from then on: each region is far away from the last, and the villains want to use the mascot [[OlympusMons legendaries]] as part of their plan. In terms of gameplay, it introduced abilities, and completely overhauled the way Pokémon's stats are determined, and completely redesigned [[FantasticFruitsAndVegetables berries]] by giving them distinctive appearances, names, and flavours, and allowing players to grow them. They also defined the series' look from then on, such as making Pokémon Centers orange and Poké Marts blue, and the colours in Ken Sugimori's artwork became more vibrant.

* TheArtifact: In ''Emerald'', there's a guy outside of the Slateport City Battle Tent that says he needs to catch Pokémon to compete in the battles there. However, the Slateport City Battle Tent uses solely rental Pokémon, meaning it shouldn't matter if the guy has Pokémon of his own. This is because in the other two versions, there's a Contest Hall there, where you do need to bring your own Pokémon. The line was only changed to switch the facility being referred to, without taking the different rules into account.

* DaylightHorror: Groudon, when awoken, makes the weather sunny - so much so that the sky is literally burning.

** To encounter Regigigas, you have to capture all three Regis and go to the Island Cave (the location of Regice) with them in your party during the daytime while a nicknamed Regice holds a ice-related item. The only clues you get for these steps are very vague lines of dialogue from a girl in Pacifidlog, and even then [[RandomNumberGod she's not guaranteed to give them when talked to]] .

** Finding the Regis. First off, you have to go to Pacifildog Town and solve a puzzle involving water currents. Once you find a water spot to Dive in, you'll follow a path to a cave. Once you're in the cave, you'll find walls written in braille. Once you decipher the message of the walls, you'll need to get a Wailord, a Relicanth and a Pokémon that can use Dig (which if you accidentally lose, it makes getting them much harder), put them in your party in a specific order (Wailord in the front, Relicanth in the back) and go back to cave. The game will then shake and then you have to go to plains where specific rock formations are around Hoenn to find a cave that is now accessible. ''Then'' you have to solve individual and cryptic puzzles in each of those cave formations to open the room where the Regis reside so you can challenge them. ''You got all that?'' The ''only'' way this could be "easier" is if you knew the game manual had a braille section allowing the player to understand what the walls said. If not, good luck finding these guys without spending ''hours'' of trial and error.

* ReadTheFreakingManual: The manual contains a translation of the Braille alphabet so you can read the writing found in the Sealed Chamber, Desert Ruins, Island Cave, and Ancient Tomb.

** The requirements that you need to fulfill before Rydel gives you both bikes at once are not hinted at by the game, and you might not even know you can do so unless you explore the Safari Zone (as there are a couples spots that obviously need both bikes to proceed). To unlock them, you need to talk to a Hex Maniac in the northern part of Route 111's desert using the Mach Bike, a Bird Keeper near the Weather Institute at Route 119 using the Acro Bike and the moves Surf and Waterfall, and a Biker in the post-game only Battle Resort.

** ''Emerald'' changes Pickup's loot table to being level-dependent instead of being fixed, preventing you from obtaining incredibly powerful items (like Full Restores or Rare Candies) during the early parts of the game.

* FranchiseCodifier: ''Ruby and Sapphire'' started the trends of each game being set far away from the last and the mascot legendaries being important to the villains' plans, introduced abilities, and completely overhauled the way Pokémon's stats are calculated.

** The game starts out [[{{Retraux}} literally identical to the GBA games]]...until Professor Birch sends out the Azurill. The scene then pans out to reveal the fact that your character was watching said scene on the [=PokéNav=] while still riding in the truck.
