* ImplausibleHairColor: Several members of he cast have brown, or blonde hair, which is uncommon in RealLife Japan. Still, at least those are natural hair colors. The same can't be said of Saya's pink hair, or [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair Saeko's purple hair.]]

* AdultFear: The first couple episodes are particularly brutal. Scores of teenagers are simply massacred in some of the most horrific ways imaginable with no pathos whatsoever. Imagine you were an adult survivor of whatever zombie attack hit your office, you're able to get home and you learn that your 15-year-old daughters' high school was ravaged. Your worst fears are confirmed when you learn she died slowly in agonizing pain, and not only did she come back to murder others, she was killed AGAIN by friends who knew her since grade school; shedding not one tear or giving not even the slightest shit about killing her again. Yeah. Kids in the first couple episodes are livestock.

In March 2011, the manga was put on hiatus; it had fallen into {{Schedule Slip}}s before, but Chapter 29 was the final nail, as it concluded the number of chapters needed for Volume 7. Reasons for the hiatus are scarce: Daisuke Sato doesn't seem to have been writing any other manga series at the moment, but Shouji Sato was still seen working on ''Manga/TriageX'', a series that he produces by himself. Shouji was supposedly also taking his time with research on weapons, vehicles, and so on for future ''HOTD'' chapters. He even colored all seven volumes of ''HOTD'' during the hiatus. In April 2013, the ''HOTD'' team released the manga's 30th chapter, then put the series back on hiatus. Almost four years later, on March 22 2017, Daisuke Satō tragically passed away from heart disease. Shouji Sato later confirmed they would not be continuing the series, leaving it understandably CutShort.

An anime adaptation by Creator/{{Madhouse}}[[labelnote:*]]with assistance from Creator/AsahiProduction and Creator/{{Dogakobo}}[[/labelnote]] aired during the summer of 2010 under the direction of Tetsurō Araki, who also directed ''Manga/DeathNote'' for Madhouse, and would later direct ''Anime/GuiltyCrown'' for Creator/ProductionIG, and ''Manga/AttackOnTitan'' and ''Anime/KabaneriOfTheIronFortress'' for WIT Studio. The anime was licensed and dubbed by Creator/SentaiFilmworks in 2011, premiered on [[Creator/AnimeNetwork The Anime Network]], and even streamed on Creator/VIZMedia's Creator/NeonAlley service for a while.

* TwelveEpisodeAnime: The anime only goes up to the twelve count due to the series being released as a monthly manga (though it did have two [=OVAs=]). If it gets another season remains to be seen, though due to its very extended hiatus it likely won't be for a long while... if ever.

* AuthorExistenceFailure: Daisuke Sato's death more-or-less killed any hopes of the story continuing. It was all but confirmed later by Shouji Sato.

* SexIsViolence: For Saeko, who literally gets off on inflicting pain, or having it inflicted on her - judging from [[LooksLikeSheIsEnjoyingIt how she responded]] to Takashi almost crushing her breast, near the end of episode 9.

* BleachedUnderpants: The artist draws {{hentai}}, to no surprise. And by the looks of it, it seems that the artist also placed a character from one of his H-Manga in the story [[http://www.citymanga.com/highschool_of_the_dead/chapter-6/14/ here]] (The reporter with the lightning-bolt earrings).

** The mall arc introduced the none-too-subtle triangle between Kohta, Saya, and Asami, though [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy Saya had decided to step aside]] so Kohta and Asami could be together, and [[http://www.mangareader.net/170-11333-17/high-school-of-the-dead/chapter-23.html even suggested taking her with them.]] [[spoiler:Until Asami [[ShipSinking got taken out of the picture]]]].

* PantyFighter: The series makes frequent use of [[http://www.mangareader.net/170-11330-25/high-school-of-the-dead/chapter-20.html upskirt shots]] during tense scenes, or simply has the girls' skirts flare dramatically both [[http://www.mangareader.net/170-55384-10/high-school-of-the-dead/chapter-25.html in]] and [[http://www.mangareader.net/170-11315-22/high-school-of-the-dead/chapter-5.html out]] of combat situations. In fact, you'll be seeing seeing as many [[http://www.mangareader.net/170-11326-18/high-school-of-the-dead/chapter-16.html girls' undies]] as zombies.

* ParentalSubstitute: While Takashi's group has essentially 'adopted' Alice, Hirano and Saya are the ones she's latched onto as her new 'parents'. Which was {{lampshade|Hanging}}d and used as ShipTease in [[http://www.mangareader.net/high-school-of-the-dead/29/32 Chapter 29]].

Such as the scene in chapter 7 where [[http://www.citymanga.com/highschool_of_the_dead/chapter-7/15/ Saya was dreaming about Hirano.]] There was also the scene at her parents' house where [[http://www.citymanga.com/highschool_of_the_dead/chapter-15/11/ she made it a point to cover Hirano's eyes]] to keep ''him'' (rather than Takashi) from [[ActionDressRip ogling her mother.]] Hirano even won her father's approval, when he told Hirano that [[http://www.citymanga.com/highschool_of_the_dead/chapter-15/21/ he was entrusting Saya to him.]] And chapter 28 lays it on thick, with Saya admitting to watching Hirano [[http://www.mangareader.net/170-58604-20/high-school-of-the-dead/chapter-28.html in order to become more like him.]] Which leads to [[http://www.mangareader.net/170-58604-22/high-school-of-the-dead/chapter-28.html a tender moment]] where they exchange guns; causing Alice to wave a pair of flags [[EveryoneCanSeeIt while the others smile knowingly.]]

* NotUsingTheZWord: "Them" is the word used for the undead in the story. An early character specifically says that they can't call them "zombies" or "the undead" because then it would be too much like, well, a fictional story.

** Alice's father dies [[GoOutWithASmile comforting a traumatized Alice]] and does not reanimate as a zombie.
** Averted when Rei is about to execute [[spoiler:Shido]] for what he did to her [[SinsOfOurFathers because of what her father tried to do to his father]]; he's clearly sweating, and when she decides he's NotWorthKilling he makes enough of a scene to be kicked off the Takagi property even though the very fact that he did such a horrible thing to his own student, thus martyring her academically, already warranted Mr. Takagi's boot at the very least.

** Alice's father did his best to comfort his traumatized daughter before he expired.

** The gym teacher at the beginning. Probably didn't die smiling, but [[spoiler:the attempted mugger and rapist]] is smiling as one of "them" and can be seen at chapter end.
