* ShownTheirWork: From the weapons to the political forces behind the Vietnam conflict -and- the sentiment of the American civilian population towards the conflict, this series is eerily accurate.
** Noteworthy for its footnotes for extra depth.
** In fact, the only reason the series uses anthropomorphs for its characters is because of ExecutiveMeddling: The publisher thought a straight Vietnam story wouldn't sell. Then again, the series probably wouldn't have had a successful anime series if it were played straight...

* NationalAnimalStereotypes: Played straight with the Russian bears, Chinese pandas, Middle Eastern camels, goats, and sheep, and to a lesser extent, the Vietnamese cats (see the "siamese cat" stereotype) and the Japanese monkeys (the "snow monkeys" associated with the country). Averted with the French pigs, German foxes, and most importantly, the American rabbits.

The Animated version seems to take in an AlternateTimeline, with the events occurring shortly after the 1991 UsefulNotes/GulfWar, and taking place in the Middle East [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOAPKxqutv8]].

* NoKoreansInJapan: pointedly averted. When Japanese-American soldiers visit a bar, they were confronted by angry ROK soldiers who are upset at merely seeing Japanese.

In ''Cat Shit One '80'', the story continues to follow the three protagonists as they became involved in various low intensity conflicts in the [[TheEighties 1980s]]. Perky, now a member of Delta Force, is attached to the Special Air Service and is involved in various SAS operations while Rats and Bota are now involved with the U.S. operation in Afghanistan against the [[SovietInvasionOfAfghanistan Soviets]].

''Cat Shit One'' is a three volume manga series written and illustrated by Motofumi Kobayashi. Published in Japan in 1998 by Softbank Publishing, when the manga was brought to the U.S., it was renamed ''Apocalypse Meow'' to parody the title of the film ''Film/ApocalypseNow'', which also took place during TheVietnamWar.
