* Myth/JapaneseMythology: The traditional Japanese creation myth states that when the first woman, Izanami, dies from giving birth to fire (literally), her husband Izanagi tries to go down to the underworld to retrieve her. Unfortunately, he gets freaked out when he sees her as a half-rotted corpse, and so Izanami lays a curse that will cause 1,000 humans to die every year Luckily, Izanagi counters by promising that 1,500 humans will be 'born' every year.

** The Trojan War. The whole thing was started by Eris, the goddess of discord, tossing a [[AppleOfDiscord golden apple into Olympus "for the fairest"]]. As a result, the goddesses fight over it, resulting in Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena choosing Paris as the 'judge'. Aphrodite bribing Paris with Helen of Sparta, the WorldsMostBeautifulWoman and the famous 'face that launched a thousand ships', is what gets the war going. This causes the men around Helen, including her husband King Menelaus, to start and sustain a conflict that lasts over a decade while Helen herself remains relatively passive in Troy.

** ''Literature/TheIliad'': The driving conflict of [[AchillesInHisTent Achilles being in his tent]] for the first half is Agamemnon refusing to hand over the conquest he wanted, the priest's daughter Briseis.
** A common motif in Greco-Roman mythology is that of the "[[MonsterProgenitor Mother of Monsters]]", a single figure who is responsible for giving birth (literally) to most evils, both physical and metaphysical. For example, Gaea gave birth to the Titans (including Typhon, the most dangerous one of all) and Echidna gave birth to most monsters that the later heroes have to slay in their stories. This may have been absorbed from older religions such as Sumerian and Hebrew folklore, who had similar figures like Tiamat and Lilith.

** One particular founding myth of Athens related by Creator/AugustineOfHippo in ''Literature/TheCityOfGod'' tells that after King Cecrops and his people have begun to build a new city, both Poseidon and Athena offer themselves as patron gods of the city. The people vote on which deity should be their patron god and after whom accordingly the city will be named. It turns out that all men vote for Poseidon and all women for Athena; as the women outnumber the men by one, Athena wins and the city is called Athens. Poseidon is furious at this and causes the sea to flood the land; the Athenians consult the Oracle of Delphi which instructs them that to appease Poseidon's wrath, the women of Athens must be punished by losing the right to cast votes, by the Athenians not using matronymic names, and by Athenian women not being called Athenians. The Athenians follow this advice, implicitly blaiming the women for causing Poseidon's wrath and framing their reduction to second-class citizens as their own fault.

The (only) original source of this myth is The City Of God (book xviii, chapter 9) by St. Augustine (who cites Marcus Terrentius Varro as his source, but Varro's work is lost) The You Tube video is not a faithful adaptation of the myth. In the original version, the gods do not appear in person (their will is communicated by the Oracle); Poseidon's gift is a freshwater spring; bountiful fishing sounds reasonable but is not mentioned; there is no mention of a vote of the Olympian gods (the videomakers seem to have made that one up). Furthermore, there is not reason to infer that Athena involved herself „only as a Take That at her uncle“, because it is in the nature of gods to want worship (and the sacrifices that go with it). In the myth as given by St. Augustine, Athena's olive tree and Poseidon's spring appear at the same time; Poseidon's offer is not identified as the first one.

** One [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6xAgpJVp5Q particular founding myth of Athens]] details a dispute between Poseidon and Athena with Poseidon appearing before a coastal city and promising bountiful fishing and harvest from the sea so long as they name him as their PatronGod. For no real reason, Athena appears and offers them olive trees, so long as they name ''her'' the {{Patron God}}dess instead. The people take a vote, but the vote turns out to be ''completely'' split along gender lines: the men all vote for Poseidon, but are outnumbered by the women, who vote for Athena. Poseidon is furious and attempts to appeal with the Olympians, but even ''they'' are completely gender-split, so again the women win by one vote and the city officially becomes Athens. However, pissing off a sea god is a bad idea for a coastal city, so the Oracle suggests that they appease Poseidon by forbidding women from voting. So not only did Athena involve herself seemingly only as a TakeThat at her uncle, but both mortal ''and'' Olympian women almost completely screwed the entire city and the Athenians could only resolve it by [[NoWomansLand reducing women to second-class citizens]].

This is not the actual myth, but a rationalization by a later writer trying to make a historical reinterpretation of the myth, and was not believed by the Athenians of who the myth was the subject of.

** ''Literature/TheIliad'': The driving conflict of [[AchillesInHisTent Achilles being in his tent]] for the first half is Agamemnon refusing to hand over the conquest he wanted, the priest's daughter Briseis. And of course, we can't forget that ''Literature/TheTrojanCycle'' started over the WorldsMostBeautifulWoman, Helen, running off with Paris ([[QuestionableConsent on ambiguous grounds]])...or the three goddesses causing the Judgement of Paris which led Aphrodite to promise him Helen...which is all because Strife crashed into Thetis' wedding with a golden AppleOfDiscord that had "to the fairest" on it.

** One [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6xAgpJVp5Q particular founding myth of Athens]] details a dispute between Poseidon and Athena with Poseidon appearing before a coastal city and promising bountiful fishing and harvest from the sea so long as they name his as their PatronGod. However, pissing off a sea god is a bad idea for a coastal city, so the Oracle suggest that they appease Poseidon by forbidding women from voting. So not only did Athena involve herself seemingly only as a TakeThat at her uncle, but both mortal ''and'' Olympian women almost completely screwed the entire city and the Athenians could only resolve it by [[NoWomansLand reducing women to second-class citizens]].
