Even when she befriends the Cullens (all of them mind you, not just the romantic interest) she keeps her cards close to her chest. The Cullens eventually learn of her powers and help her, but Bella's problems run deeper...as the story progresses and she gains more control over "the monster" inside, she realizes to her horror that she actually enjoys burning. This is a very complex, multi-faceted story. Bella is constantly fighting herself and trying to be good. She develops a romantic relationship with Rosalie, which goes into another theme of this story...polyamory, since Rosalie remains committed to and in love with both Emmett and now Bella. Bella navigates a winding path to forgiveness with Charlie. And in the background, the threat of the Volturi lurks. I love how all of the characters are three-dimensional. We see a wonderful exploration of Rosalie's character, Emmett as a really great friend, and Jacob, Leah, Esme, and the rest get wonderful perspectives and growth. This story also has multiple POVs and the author transitions to each voice very nicely. There's a lot to unpack here...the polyamorous romance is very well done and realistic, the drama is outstanding, the angst is...well, very angsty, but there's so much light heartedness and family feels here too. This fic is truly one-of-a-kind and I have personally reread it a dozen times or more over the years.
