The citizens are so thoroughly brainwashed with propaganda, they've become {{stepford smiler}}s that can casually talk about disowning their own children if they join the resistance, and don't seem to care about life and death. * The ''VideoGame/{{Splatoon}}'' series takes place in Inkopolis, a bright and shiny {{Americasia}}-flavored city inhabited by colorful BadassAdorable squid and octopus people, a plethora of wacky anthropomorphic sea creatures, and two cats. The most popular form of sport is all but harmless and involves nothing more than covering as much of the field as possible with ink using your FamilyFriendlyFirearms. Sounds light and fluffy, right? Well... the franchise is set in an AfterTheEnd version of Japan where a climate change-induced rise in sea levels drove almost all land creatures to extinction and left the species that evolved to fill the niche humans left behind in a near-constant dispute over what land remains. As cute as they are, Inklings and Octarians are just as petty as humans, and [[FantasticRacism racism]] is still a major issue. Homelessness remains a problem, and energy crises run rampant. An unknown amount of land outside Inkopolis is an inhospitable wasteland filled with polluted water and the twisted ruins of human civilization, now inhabited only by bloodthirsty salmon-like creatures whose eggs are harvested (using child labor, no less) by a shady organization for unknown reasons. Oh, and the ''entire planet'' came dangerously close to an unambiguous genocide at the hands of a [[AIIsACrapshoot rogue AI]] that was created by the humans to attempt to pass down their knowledge, only for it to become disgusted at the other races and determine the best way to accomplish its initial goal would be to wipe everything out and start again.

** ''VideoGame/NoMoreHeroes'': Utopiland, created by literally transplanting five areas across the globe, Santa Destroy included, to form a flower-shaped island archipelago representing humanity's values. The city is ruled by a mega-corporation, all money must be earned in the form of scrip, and the entire project is just a convoluted plot to build a HumongousMecha and TakeOverTheWorld. And, of course, it's ruled by a CorruptCorporateExecutive who has gone insane from a combination of an abusive childhood, alien augmentations, and getting his face caved in by Travis. Things get weirder and brutal when the corporation's old 'friend', the megalomaniac prince of a totalitarian intergalactic empire, decides to crash the party and takes a shot at being a '[[NominalHero superhero]]' by randomly destroying various parts of the world and killing allies and enemies alike, all while maintaining a veneer of optimism by spearheading an operation to introduce human-alien relationships in Utopiland. Most of which involve killing alien mercenaries.

* ''VideoGame/FistOfTheNorthStarLostParadise'' has the city of Eden. Compared to other settlements trying to scrape by, Eden is the closest thing to civilization in the post-apocalyptic wastes; with plentiful food, clean drinking water, and even electricity, those who live within Eden's walls want for nothing. Unfortunately, Eden is run by some rather corrupt individuals (their official leader, a compassionate woman, is little more than a figure head) who are very picky about who they allow into the city. Anyone turned away is left with little choice but to continue wandering the wastes.

* The earliest parts of the ''VideoGame/DetroitBecomeHuman'' show Detroit as a clean, colorful city where all menial tasks are efficiently tended to by androids, but you barely have to scratch the veneer to see the resentment of economically-displaced human workers or the ways in which [[JobStealingRobot androids are exploited and abused as a result of said displacement]]. The concept of [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technological_unemployment technological unemployment]] has come to full fruition in the United States, as in 2038, 10 years after the Android Act was passed into law, almost ''40 percent'' of the American workforce is unemployed, and to show this, multiple homeless people are seen on the streets of Detroit with signs blaming androids as to why they lost their livelihoods. For a comparison, unemployment in United States during the Great Depression only went up to 25%. Depending on the [[MultipleEndings ending]], things can potentially get even worse from there [[spoiler:with the worst possible outcome being a RobotWar kicked off by a dirty bomb rendering the city uninhabitable]].
** By contrast, neighbouring Canada has not done the same, as they prohibit the sale or manufacture of androids on Canadian soil, and due to this androids have no discernible legal status in the country. And by all accounts, Canada is doing quite well, with no mass unemployment due to jobs being replaced by androids and the country still keeping much of its environment and political freedoms in the process.
** Magazine articles point to a rather bleak world. Global warming had reached a point of no return and multiple animal species went extinct due to human effects on the environment. There's even an android zoo that showcases many extinct animal species.
** TV news and the magazines also point to the new cold war between the United States and Russia, where during the events of the game there is a large confrontation in the Barents Sea over Russian annexation claims to the ice field there, and as the game goes on, they nearly go to war.
** It's implied that America will soon suffer a population crisis over the fact that most people are deciding to purchase androids and have sex with them rather than finding a human partner. Even if a person doesn't want to spend between $900 and $8,000 on a personal android, there's an android sex club in the heart of the city that only charges $30 for 30 minutes alone with a sex bot. (And since, as mentioned above, unemployment is literally the highest in US history, the value of the dollar will likely be at its lowest ever, so $30 in 2037 would likely be the equivalent of around US$7.50 today.)

** Pelican Town looks so nice and serene - the ideal small town, right? Unfortunately, the characters have a ''lot'' of issues going on - people suffering from ParentalFavoritism, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from being held in a POW camp, alcoholism, suicide attempts, homelessness, and ParentalAbandonment. What's more, a good portion of Pelican Town's residents are not even participating in the labour force due to the fact there are almost no jobs there - and [[CrueltyIsTheOnlyOption the player has to drive at least one or two of them out of work]] in order to bring at least one or two back ''into'' the labour force. For a farming community, there sure isn't much, well, agriculture around - especially because the player only got their farm because they inherited it - [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome much like in real life where farms tend to be held along family lines]].

Oh, and the ''entire planet'' came dangerously close to an unambiguous genocide at the hands of a [[AIIsACrapshoot rogue AI]].

No one is allowed to leave, inhabitants are [[BrainwashedAndCrazy mind-controlled into working loyally for Persephone]], and despite its initial beauty, the landscape is also scattered with ruins that imply a darker past.
** Atlantis from the final episode of the same DLC is also this as well. Despite it's stunning beauty it also is full of nasty things once the misthios starts looking around.
