* AmbiguouslyBi: Most of them generally prefer those on the opposite sex, but provide a lot of subtext indicating they have no problem with the same sex either. So far the only exceptions are Téa (who has yet to display any attraction towards another woman) and Yami (who openly admits to going both ways).
* CharacterExaggeration: Traits that were prominent to their original counterparts tend to go up to eleven here (i.e. Téa's firm belief in ThePowerOfFriendship and Kaiba's jerkass behavior).

* AdaptationalDumbass: Nowhere near as much as the rest of the main characters, but Yugi still falls victim to bouts of blatant gullibility, forgetfulness, and jumping to rather absurd conclusions (such as thinking Yami, a spirit, is a vampire because he lacks a reflection).
* AdaptationalJerkass: Whereas canon Yugi was a NiceGuy and an AllLovingHero, Abridged Yugi is more sarcastic and self-centered, abuses Bakura as much as everybody else does, has no problems with robbing people who he thinks are dead, and calls Kaiba a loser for never defeating him in Duel Monsters.
* AmbiguouslyBi: While he mainly displays SingleTargetSexuality to Téa, his relationship with Yami eventually evolves into something much deeper than strictly platonic, with much of their conversations coming across as two romantic partners.

* AntiHero: Much less than Yami. He's quite often a jerk, even to his friends, and can be very bitter and cynical at times, but he's really a good guy deep down.

* OnlySaneByComparison: Yugi is certainly a jerk who can be quite idiotic at times, but he's also the only one of the main cast not to have a consistently negative personality trait (Tristan and Joey's idiocy, Yami's jerkassery, Teá's lust and obsession with sex or love-related things, Kaiba's enormous ego, etc).

* SpellMyNameWithAnS: In credits and other such material, his surname tends to be written as "Moto", which is consistent with how it's pronounced in the English dub, but in both the English and the original Japanese versions, it's spelled "Muto".

* AccentAdaptation: He has an English accent in this version. Doesn't stop him from constantly mocking both Bakuras for their Britishness.

** ZigZagged. He's a total jerk and shown to be bit of a tyrant unlike his counterpart from the second anime but it wouldn't be entirely far off with his counterpart from the first anime and early parts of the manga. On the other hand, the original source implied he was always a [[TheGoodKing benevolent ruler]] to his people, whereas Abridged turned Yami into an [[EvilOverlord evil tyrant]] who enslaved all of his kingdom.

As with everything else in the series though this is subject to RuleOfFunny -- when Noah turns his friends to stone he doesn't care until he petrifies Tristan, which horrifies him. And on several other occasions, he shows he does truly care for Yugi, Joey and Téa (Tristan is usually still the ButtMonkey).
* ArbitrarySkepticism: Up until season 4, he doesn't believe in souls. Despite being one himself.

* BrokenAesop: He frequently gives out the moral that bullying isn't nice, despite being somewhat of a bully himself. PlayedForLaughs, of course.
* BrutalHonesty: During the duel between him and Joey in episode 17, Yami flat out tells Joey that he's a terrible duelist, and that he only wins because Yami tells him what to do.

* CharacterizationMarchesOn: While his hammy, egotistical jerkassery has been a part of his character since the beginning, ''how'' this ego is executed changes over time. For much of the series, he is a traditionally cool DeadpanSnarker. Starting in Season 3, he becomes a fast-talking, arrogant [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} oddball]] with a habit of ignoring people.
* CloudCuckoolander: He can lapse into this at times. In episode 61, his kookiness was enough to drive ''[[AxCrazy Melvin]]'' crazy.
* CowboyBebopAtHisComputer: [[invoked]] As fans of the actual series know, his "name" is Yami Yugi, but then that just means "Dark Yugi," as in Yugi's alter-ego. His name is ''not'' Yami in the main continuity, but he was identified as such in the 4Kids dub, creating a ContinuitySnarl when the mystery of his name became a major plot point later in the series. This series just goes with "Yami" and lampshades 4Kids accidentally naming him as such. Season 4 gets around this snarl by having people refer to him as Pharaoh, since by that point everyone knows his identity.

** He also seems annoyed with Kaiba's potentially racist comments about the skin-colors of their Ancient Egyptian counterparts in Episode 59.

* HeManWomanHater: He despises women and constantly makes jokes at the expense of Mai and Téa. However, in "They Saved Tristan's Brain," he justifies this by explaining women hate him and want to kill him, revealing he thought Marik and Bakura were women all this time.

* TheHero: Yugi's perception is that he's this, since he's the one who does all the dueling and gets more attention and screentime. Actually more like TheLancer.

** His season zero counterpart is a full blown psycho who just seems to like killing the people who hurt Yugi, making him heroic in the [[NominalHero loosest possible definition.]]

* HoistByHisOwnPetard: After Battle City, he dueled Joey so Joey could earn back his Red-Eyes Black Dragon. He refused to go easy on Joey and expected it to be a CurbStompBattle. He actually lost the duel, and Joey won because he believed in the heart of the cards just like Yugi told him to, even though Yami admitted afterwards that he was bullshitting when he said to believe in the heart of the cards.

* HypocriticalHumor: Yami is prone to this. For one, he makes a jab to the fact Yami Bakura had the same name as Ryou Bakura, despite the fact Yami Yugi himself never objects to people calling him the same name as his host.
* InelegantBlubbering: After losing Yugi's soul, he spends the remainder of the episode trying to explain what happened to Joey while crying profusely.
* JerkassHasAPoint: When being called out by Téa for not believing in Joey enough during his duel with Melvin, Yami does a ''precise'' phrase in Téa's voice in what she would say in a mocking fashion and said that's what she sounds like. Very harsh, but also kinda true.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: As evidenced all over this page, the Pharaoh is a dick. But in the end, he's still a good guy who helps protect Yugi and his friends.

** In Episode 40, Marik tries to dissuade Yami from attacking Bakura and ending the duel by having Ryou appear in front of him. Instead of hesitating like he did in the original, he willingly ''attacks'' him which shocks Odion and Joey.
** Episode 58 where he doesn't care about Joey being knocked unconscious by Melvin's Egyptian god card. At the same time, ranting how people in his time didn't bother caring about his death. Subverted in the next episode, where he suddenly sympathizes with Joey's condition and swears to defeat Melvin to avenge him. Maybe he does care after all.

* LargeHam: Obviously, since in the dub, he's '''voiced by [[Creator/DanGreen DAN GREEN]]'''.

** He demands Yugi not to cry after Joey's defeat by Melvin because it'll be distractive in his duel against Kaiba.
** Averted when [[spoiler: Raphael takes Yugi's soul]]. TheAce who's [[ComedicSociopathy laughed off every horrible thing like it was a joke]] doesn't even ''try'' to conceal his sheer misery at Yugi's loss.
* MetaGuy: Unlike his counterpart, he's been this since day one.
* MindRape: His "Mind Crush" power is this, weaponized. It's his go-to answer (aside from playing card games) to any problem he faces.

* {{Narcissist}}: He slightly has an inflated opinion of himself. Take this clip from Episode 55, for instance:

* NominalHero: At least initially, where he doesn't care about Yugi's friends at all and is more violent and arrogant. Much like his canon counterpart, he's mellowed out over time but is still a jerk to them more than occasionally.
* OhCrap: When Kaiba summons Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon in 14.

* OlderAlterEgo: To Yugi, though as in the canon his age is hazy.

* PetTheDog: After being unsympathetic about him being defeated by Melvin at first, Yami swore to avenge Joey by beating him in a duel and save the world.
* PoliticallyIncorrectHero: Aims a string of misogynistic insults at the offscreen, comatose Mai in episode 54, much to Joey's discomfort.

* {{Sadist}}: How he acts in Season 0, where he's portrayed as someone who loves seeing his enemies suffer in the most painful ways imaginable. This is brought up in the main series when [[spoiler:he falls under the effects of the Orichalcos]] in Season 4 and he begins acting like his Season 0 counterpart.
* SealedEvilInACan: Season Zero mostly, but he has his moments in the main series too.

* SexierAlterEgo: The TropeNamer, though it was Téa who actually said it. As adorable as Yugi is, Yami is ''sexy''.
* SignatureMove: Mind Crush, of course. Unlike the canon Yami, he has no problems with abusing it. He even extends it to video games he plays, as seen in his playthrough of Fallout 3.
* SuperPoweredEvilSide: In Season 0, he's this to Yugi. When he's let out, someone is gonna get Mind Crushed.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Originally the OnlySaneMan of the main cast with a mean streak, now he's easily the most sociopathic of the bunch, except for maybe Kaiba (who was willing to detonate an island with people still on it, something Yami actually objects to).
* TookALevelInKindness: After hs JerkassRealization over the course of Season 4, he mellows out a bit come the fifth season.
* TranquilFury: When Weevil ripped a card saying it had Yugi's soul in it. Yami's voice lost all emotion and then he gave Weevil the biggest beatdown ever.

* VitriolicBestBuds: He and Kaiba apparently secretly practice combos together every weekend.

Joey serves the same role as he does originally as TheLancer to Yugi and Yami. He's a closet [[UsefulNotes/FurryFandom furry]] and might also have an attraction to Kaiba. On the other hand, he's recently admitted his love for Mai Valentine's breasts. He aspires to be a professional duelist, but as Yami and Kaiba constantly remind him, most of his opponents are frauds and/or pathetic, and Joey may be too dumb to be a serious duelist.

* AbusiveParents: He said that his father [[AlcoholicParent constantly drank]] and that it taught him a valuable lesson. Said lesson being solving problems using force.

* AdaptationalWimp: Even moreso than his original counterpart. While the anime adaptations made Joey more of a weakling that often had to rely on dumb luck, he still had enough skill to handle himself in a fight. This version of Joey, however, is a lot more idiotic and nowhere near as competent.

* BrooklynRage: TropeNamer, but not quite an example himself, being from Japan (which, granted, [=4Kids=] tries to ''[[ThinlyVeiledDubCountryChange pretend]]'' is America). Of course, his accent and attitude fit the trope regardless. In one video, Yami even calls him "Joey, Guardian of Brooklyn". To be fair, though, he claims to be from Brooklyn, Japan... which makes just as much logical sense as the rest of Japan is America jokes.
* BrutalHonesty: When Tristan claims to be having problems with his grade, Joey tells him straight up that it's because he's an idiot.
* CatchPhrase:
** "Brooklyn Rage!!", which didn't catch on ([[AscendedMeme in-universe, anyway.]])

** Stealing them is also his thing, though the first time he needed to use Copycat. He's thus far appropriated Keith and Tristan's.

* {{Flanderization}}: His "Nyehs" became more frequent over time. It got to the point that in the Capsule Monsters miniseries he was making the sound with every footstep.
* UsefulNotes/FurryFandom: A member. He prefers to keep it hidden from Serenity but has fully admitted it to his friends.

* {{Jerkass}}: Mostly to Serenity and sometimes Tristan.

* TookALevelInBadass: In season 4, he reveals he's gained "main character" powers, which improves his ability to duel considerably in spite of him not knowing how he did it at all. As a result, he wins a vast majority of the duels he's in, only keeling over to Mai because he was so exhausted from playing two card games in a row.
* UnexplainedRecovery: [[spoiler:After a direct attack from Mega Ultra Chicken that almost kill him]], he recovered at the very end of the next episode, offscreen. According to Téa, he was healed by [[ThePowerOfFriendship friendship]], though he apparently still suffered a bit of brain damage. He also suffered a Mind Crush from Yugi, only for him to still be alive and well.

Our protagonist. In the Abridged Series, Yugi shares the most amount of ever-so coveted screen time with Yami. His story plays out pretty much the same as it normally does, except with more card games and snarkiness.

** This actually ''sticks'' come Season Five, instead of going back to StatusQuoIsGod and being a selfish ass like he was for the first three seasons, Yami actually notes he's enjoying his time with Yugi and the others instead of being in a rush to play card games. He also attempts to be nicer to a kid who clearly knows nothing about how to construct a proper deck or duel, and actually skips out on a perfectly good chance to insult Joey, which is something he would have jumped on before. He also has developed a bit of humility, not making as big a deal of his status to anyone when crudely introduced at the tournament at Kaibaland.

* AmbiguouslyBi: Joel stills retains his crush on Mai as in canon, but some of his interactions with Tristan and Duke have homoerotic undertones. That and he apparently has "dream sex" with Kaiba.

* BloodKnight: He loves inflicting physical violence on others and expresses relief whenever he's allowed to beat people up onscreen (or offscreen, if 4Kids allowed it).
* BrooklynRage: TropeNamer, but not quite an example himself, being from Japan (which, granted, [=4Kids=] tries to ''[[ThinlyVeiledDubCountryChange pretend]]'' is America). Of course, his accent and attitude fit the trope regardless. In one video, Yami even calls him "Joey, Guardian of Brooklyn". * CurbStompBattle: Was on the receiving end of this from Kaiba in their "third place duel" where he loses in the first turn. But he manages to deal one out to [[spoiler: ''Yami'']] after the tournament concluded. He finished him with a joke monster to boot.

** Despite how much he and Kaiba dislike each other, when they ensared by CombatTentacles in episode 82 and Dartz says he's sure they have [[AllAnimeIsNaughtyTentacles seen enough hentai to know what will happen next]], Kaiba responds that he hasn't seen any hentai, Joey responds that he ''actually'' feels bad for Kaiba.

* UsefulNotes/FurryFandom: A member. He prefers to keep it hidden from Serenity, but has fully admitted it to his friends.

** Delivered a second one that completely dispensed with all comedy on November 9th, 2016 with regards to the infamous presidential election of that time. The video involved him leaning heavily on the fourth wall and speaking to fans who were scared and wanted to give up following the previous days results. Many fans said it brought them to tears.

* AdaptationalDumbass: Téa was arguably one of the more smarter characters in the original series. The Abridged Series instead makes Téa a friendship obsessed goofball who often ''acts'' like she's smart but really isn't.

* LovableSexManiac: "The only one who will be taking my body is Yugi and/or Yami". This despite the fact that she has offered herself to Duke Devlin, lusted over Marik and wanted to make him her sex slave, and even tried to seduce Yugi's Grandpa when she was feeling extra-horny.

* SkewedPriorities: In episode 14, Téa stops Yami from killing Kaiba... only because she feared he would survive.

Tristan is... dumb. ''[[TheDitz Really dumb]]''. It's his entire schtick. However, when he isn't [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} stuck in his own bizarre little world]], he can be surprisingly badass: his voice gives him super strength, after all. His physical body was destroyed/possessed during The Cancelled Series, and he spent most of it as a robotic monkey. His friends thought he died, but in the end he got better. He is desperately in love with Serenity, but is mostly helpless compared to the raw sex appeal of Duke.

* MadeOfIron: Joey slams Nesbitt, who was in Tristan's body at the time, through a building with a full body tackle. Nesbitt gets out riding a motorcycle like nothing happens.

* AdaptationalDumbass: Canon Kaiba was a competent businessman. Abridged Kaiba, not so much (for the most part). He wants to spend money on unneccesarily expensive projects, often for no reason other than because he can. Among other things he states he wants to prove the idea of [[Myth/ClassicalMythology Icarus]] flying too close to the sun wrong by [[TooDumbToLive flying through the sun himself]].

* AdaptationalWimp: Kaiba is not nearly as good a duelist as his canon counterpart, and in contrast to the canon Yami Yugi seeing him as a WorthyOpponent, the Abridged Yami mocks him for how many times he's lost their duels together. Funnily enough this only applies to card games, in everything else he does he is nearly unstoppable.

* ArchEnemy: In the original anime Kaiba and Joey didn't like eachother, but the Abridged series takes it up a notch, as Kaiba will often go well out of his way to make Joey's life more difficult, mainly by trying (and failing) to obstruct Joey's entry into his tournaments.

* HoistByHisOwnPetard: He was the one who came up with the idea for using holographic projectors for playing duel monsters and coerced Yugi into dueling him. It's later revealed that Kaiba developed PTSD from a mixture of Exodia's terrifying prescence and getting thoroughly beaten.

Kaiba obviously blocked out that Alister would have beaten in their first duel if Kaiba didn't gain Fang of Critias, his lose against Pegasus, and the first time Yugi defeated him, showing that Kaiba went as far as refusing to ever admit he lost at all.

** Subverted when he accidentally broke his wrist while dueling Gozaburo, and then used the same hand to smash through a glass casing. Kaiba may be tough, but it doesn't change the fact that ''it still hurts''.
