* StrongAsTheyNeedToBe: How invulnerable he is seems to vary across the movie. Early on, he is knocked out by having a train crash into him, and later he is temporarily incapacitated by anti-aircraft missiles. But during his battle with the Army, he effortlessly withstands tank shells and 16-inch battleship cannons.

* FatalFlaw: His paranoia. Kent Mansley is very suspicious of everything surrounding the rumors of the Iron Giant. This makes him prone to panic and making extremely impulsive decisions. The biggest example of this is when Mansley orders the missile to be launched on the giant even though it's ''right next to him''.

* {{Jerkass}}: Constantly throwing his weight around and acting like he's the most important man in town.

* TheSociopath: Puts his own needs and desires above everyone else's, cares about no one but himself, and is all too happy to leave his comrades behind to suffer the consequences of his actions.

Of course when he actually gets the upper hand by proving the Iron Giant's existence, he can't help but to make things worse and ends up condemning the entire town to nuclear destruction.

* FriendToAllChildren: His first scene with Hogarth certainly implies his, given how friendly he was with the kid. And whenever danger seems to threaten Hogarth, Dean puts himself bodily in the way.

* TemptingFate: "Are you mad, Mansley?" when the latter tells him to launch the nuclear missile on the Giant, which would nuke the entire town because the Giant is standing about fifty feet away from them. Soon after, Mansley snatches the radio from him in a panic and screams, "LAUNCH THE MISSILE NOW!", proving that yes, Mansley is mad.

* JerkassHasAPoint: His paranoia against the giant isn't entirely unjustified. We're in the middle of the UsefulNotes/ColdWar and tensions are high between the Western and Eastern blocks, and from Mansley's point of view, the giant is a potential threat due to being essentially an OutsideContextProblem. When it turns out the giant was designed to be a {{Superweapon}} and starts attacking the city in a blind rage, his position is a bit more understandable.

* PragmaticVillainy: When the giant attacks Rockwell, he suggests to General Rogard to lure it out of town so they can bomb it as safely as possible.

** Mansley is a trigger-happy nutcase who acts on instinct while Rogard is discriminating in his of military force.
