\\
Junkrat is an explosives-obsessed freak who lives to cause chaos and destruction.\\
\\
The attack on the Australian Omnium's fusion core forever altered the landscape of the Outback. After the detonation, the area was transformed into a harsh, irradiated wasteland, littered with debris and the twisted fragments of the ruined facility, and unlivable to most.\\
\\
But there were some who survived. Calling themselves the Junkers, they scavenged the husk of the Omnium and formed a lawless, cutthroat society in its shadow. Junkrat, born Jamison Fawkes, was one of them, eking out a living reclaiming metal and components from the ruins. Like many others, he was affected by the lingering radiation. This touch of madness made him ideal for handling dangerous explosives, a love which he turned into an obsession.\\
\\
He came to notoriety when he discovered an extremely valuable secret in the bones of the Omnium. Though few knew the nature of what he found, he was nonetheless pursued by bounty hunters, gangs, and opportunists wherever he went, until he made a deal with the Junker enforcer Roadhog, who grudgingly agreed to be his personal bodyguard in exchange for a fifty-fifty share of the spoils.\\
\\
Now, with Roadhog in tow, Junkrat has left the Outback, and embarked upon an international crime spree leaving nothing but havoc and bedlam in his wake.\\
\\
Junkrat excels at unleashing indirect supressive fire and denying areas from his enemies with traps.
* '''Frag Launcher''', His main weapon fires arcing grenades that bounce off solid surfaces and explode after a small delay or upon hitting an enemy.
* '''Concussion Mine''', which he can throw and set explode on command to damage nearby enemies and send them flying or propel himself to areas he wouldn't normally reach.
* '''Steel Trap''', which clamps onto the first enemy to walk over it, rooting them in place.
* '''Total Mayhem''', His passive. When killed, His body drops a cluster of live grenades at Junkrat's corpse in an attempt to take his enemies down with him.
* '''RIP-Tire''', His ultimate deploys an explosive-laden motorized tire that Junkrat can manually control for several seconds, which can climb over walls and obstacles and detonates on command, dealing massive damage to nearby enemies if they don't manage to shoot it down first.
-----
* ActionBomb: His ''RIP-Tire'' sends out a controllable, [[PerfectlyCromulentWord explosified]] tire which can be steered almost anywhere and explode for ''massive'' damage, but it can be prematurely shot down by the enemy. Junkrat himself is an example of this, as if he's killed, he drops a few grenades that [[TakingYouWithMe can cause major damage if you're close enough.]] Woe unto any {{Close Range Combatant}}s that have to deal with Junkrat.
* AffablyEvil: By far the most friendly and jovial of the {{Villain Protagonist}}s.
* AmbiguousDisorder: Junkrat shows signs of having Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder impulsive type thanks to his childish behavior, constant fidgeting and twitching, impatience, nonstop talking, inability to stay quiet, acting without regard for consequences, and trouble socializing with others. However, no official statement about him having ADHD has been made, so it's up in the air.
* AndImTheQueenOfSheba: Junkrat calls himself the "president of the moon" when he is told Hammond is the pilot of Wrecking Ball.
* AnimalMotifs: A rat. His playstyle rewards sneakiness (as you deploy his trap and mine), and he's a thief who scavenges parts (for his arsenal), not unlike real-life rats. His darker soot-covered forehead and eye region, in contrast to his lighter pinkish pointy nose and mouth area, enhance his resemblance to a black-and-white pet rat or pet ferret. Some characters also call him a "rat" in-game as an insult.
* AreYouPonderingWhatImPondering: In "Junkertown: The Plan", he and Roadhog seem to think alike due to Roadhog's lack of objections to Junkrat's plan. When Roadhog silently dampens the match and fuse, Junkrat immediately understands Roadhog's objections and tailors his plan for Roadhog.
* ArtificialLimbs: Both his right arm and leg, probably lost in an explosive-related accident. Funnily enough, since he's one of the only playable heroes to have an artificial ''right'' arm, its only use is limited to holding his weapon, and his QuickMelee has him punch forward using his left, organic fist.
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: According to "A Moment in Crime Special Report", he specializes in explosives, arson, demolition and barbecue.
* AshFace: Most of his head is covered in ash and his hair is smoking.
* AwesomeAussie: An Australian villain who fights with homemade explosives and leftover scrap in a game where everyone has modern-to-futuristic technology, with a heavy accent to go along with it. Doesn't get much more awesome than that.
* AxCrazy: Junkrat lives to cause mayhem and destruction.
* BadassBandolier: Wears a bandolier of grenades.
* BadassNormal: He doesn't have any special powers, hardware or training, but that doesn't make him any less dangerous.
* BalanceBuff: He was originally damaged by his own grenades, making it difficult to use him in close-quarters. A later patch removed this weakness, making him a terror to fight at point-blank range, as he can easily decimate non-tanks with a quick grenade followed by an immediately detonated ''Concussion Mine''. He also gained the ability to store up to two mines at once, letting him use it more proactively in a fight.
* BearTrap: His Steel Trap ability. No ability in the game can be used to escape it once caught, not even Tracer's ''Recall'', Reaper's ''Wraith Form'', or Moira's ''Fade'', rendering them a sitting duck until the trap's effects wear off.
* BecomingTheCostume:
** His "Hayseed" and "Scarecrow" skins give him a few bonus lines when "on fire," specifically mentioning that for his costume, [[LiteralMinded being "on fire" isn't very good.]]
** His "Dr. Junkenstein" skin gives him a few miscellaneous MadScientist lines, including changing his Ultimate callout to "Get ready for a shock!/Ladies and gentlemen, my latest creation!"
** His "Cricket" skin, appropriately enough, adds a few cricket-related lines.
** His "Beachrat" skin adds several lines for various beach-related activities. This includes one of his set-up lines being "I'm ready for some fun in the sun!", and one of his enemy ultimate callouts is "Everyone, out of the pool!"
* BelligerentSexualTension: He jokes to Roadhog that The Queen of Junkertown may have a crush on him due to her obsession with capturing the pair. Roadhog responds by laughing and telling him he's dreaming.
--> '''Junkrat''': The queen sure seems to have an interest in me. Suppose she fancies me? I'd hate to break her heart.
--> '''Roadhog''': (laughs loudly) You're dreaming.
* BerserkButton:
** As revealed in the comic short "Going Legit", he becomes absolutely ''furious'' whenever people call his partner Roadhog "fat" within earshot of him. [[HypocriticalHeartwarming However, he has no qualms in dishing out the fat jokes himself.]]
** On a more serious note, [[FantasticRacism Omnics]]. The Omnic based maps makes him drop his silly AffablyEvil demeanor and start voicing genuine disgust towards their existence. And in place of his usual psychotic laughter for when he eliminates someone, he spitefully calls any Omnic character a "piece of scrap!"
* BetterThanSex: The face he makes when he lights the fuse for the dynamite in ''Junkertown: The Plan'' makes it appear [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything like he's having an orgasm]].
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Junkrat is one of the most jovial and quirkiest characters in the game, but that doesn't mean he isn't dangerous. Far from it, he is an internationally wanted criminal and capable enough to put up a fight with other characters with far more technologically advanced weaponry or even professionally trained soldiers and assassins.
* BigBad: Of the Halloween event "Junkenstein's Revenge." Dr. Junkenstein has built an army of "Zomics" along with his monster to take revenge against the king that spurned him.
* BigGuyLittleGuy: The Little Guy to Roadhog's Big Guy. Even though he's 6'5'' (1.95m), he's scrawny and hunched over most of the time.
* BlingBlingBang: His "King Jamison" legendary skin decks out his arsenal-- his mines and grenade launcher in particular-- with gold, pearls, rubies, and a ''lot'' of diamonds.
* BloodKnight: He enjoys fighting the other heroes and in the comic he gets angry at Roadhog for destroying an omnic before he could and states that he would be upset if that was the only omnic.
* TheBogan: A destructive, loud-mouthed, classless Australian criminal.
* BombThrowingAnarchists: He is wildly chaotic and specializes in explosives.
* BondOneLiner: From his character ability trailer:
--> '''Junkrat''': [[{{Pun}} Rest In Pieces!]]
* BrainsAndBrawn: The Brains to Roadhog's Brawn. He is the one who makes the plans for the pair, but as both the "Going Legit" comic and several of Junkrat's in-game voice lines make it very clear, [[SubvertedTrope he's very scatterbrained and easily distracted.]] Roadhog often has to refocus him, and help him iron out flaws in his plans.
* ButtMonkey: Has two highlight introes where he makes a complete fool of himself and while he and Roadhog are an infamous criminal duo, he's the only one of the pair who gets sassed by other characters.
* TheCameo: He appears in the crowd cheering Wrecking Ball's crowning in his origin video, sporting his original organic right arm.
* ChainsawGood: During "Junkenstein's Revenge", the sound effect for the ''RIP-Tire'' is replaced with that of a revving chainsaw.
* ChurchgoingVillain: Downplayed, but this line in Nepal implies he's at least somewhat religious. It was later removed from the game.
--> '''Junkrat''': Now this place? Eugh, makes me wanna be an atheist.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Implied to be the result of living in a country that has a very toxic environment, which did ''wonders'' for his sanity. Roadhog, as the saner one of the duo, is his [[CloudcuckoolandersMinder minder]].
* ConsummateLiar: According to Roadhog in the comic "Wasted Land", Junkrat's "a liar. Lies to himself, most of all."
* CoolSidecar: Rides in one, which has his symbol on the front, attached to Roadhog's motorcycle.
* CreepyHighPitchedVoice: He has a very high-pitched voice, fitting for his rat AnimalMotifs.
* CuteLittleFangs: More apparent in his comic portrayal, but his canines are sharper than usual regardless.
* DamageDiscrimination: If used on himself, his ''Concussion Mine'' deals knockback but not damage, allowing him to harmlessly RocketJump to high places or out of danger. His ''Frag Launcher'' and ''RIP-Tire'' ''used'' to [[SubvertedTrope subvert]] this [[ExplosiveStupidity and he was susceptible to his own explosives,]] but it's since been changed so it's not the case anymore.
* ADayInTheLimelight: He and Roadhog (as well as Mercy and Reaper) get more focus in the 2016 Halloween update by starring in the Halloween comic and being the main antagonists in the "Junkenstein's Revenge" brawl.
* DeadManSwitch: If killed, he drops several live grenades.
* DemolitionsExpert: He uses explosives for almost all of his moves.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: His titular scheme in ''"Junkertown: the Plan"'' has some pretty significant oversights. Roadhog has to pre-emptively stop him twice because his first draft didn't include an ''escape plan'' for when his bomb-trolley exploded, and the second neglected to save the small fortune they'd just plundered from across the globe.
* DoYouWantToHaggle: In "Wasted Land", he tries to secretly proposition Roadhog into protecting him by only offering 10% of his treasure, he then tries to increase it to 20% then 25% after he realizes that Roadhog is disinterested. When Roadhog angrily defeats the four thugs, he tries and fails to haggle with him, by trying to reduce his price from 50% to 28%.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: While his voice lines might suggest otherwise, he's none too fond of shrimp. The heads freak him out.
* DroneDeployer: His ultimate is a remote-controlled, self-propelled bomb.
* DrFakenstein: His Halloween costume/persona is MadScientist "Dr. Junkenstein."
* EvilLaugh: Does this constantly. So often it almost becomes little more than background noise after you have played as him for a bit.
* ExplosiveCigar: Inverted; his "Bad For Your Health" victory pose has him stick a lit stick of dynamite in his mouth as though it were a cigar.
* ExplosiveStupidity: [[SubvertedTrope It's no longer the case,]] but for nearly a full year after the game's release, Junkrat's grenades and ''RIP-Tire'' could damage him, [[YetAnotherStupidDeath potentially causing him to blow himself up.]] ''Concussion Mine'' wouldn't hurt him even back then, but it's still capable of blasting him to unsafe places or off the map into a BottomlessPit if the player isn't careful.
* FantasticRacism: He is sickened by the idea of peace with the Omnics and believes that Overwatch accepting them was a major element of their downfall. When put in the Numbani map, his response is to suggest they raze it to the ground. He also is so fundamentally disgusted by the idea of Omnics and humans sharing the capacity for religion as a common point that he half-jokingly says it makes him want to be an atheist.
* FatAndSkinny: The skinny partner to the fat Roadhog.
* FearlessFool: He's described as such by Micheal Chu due to his fearlessness towards explosives, which resulted in his missing limbs and burned hair/scalp.
* FlamingHair: The tips of hair are not just smoking, but appear to be actively on fire. Even more with his "Scorched" skin equipped.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: You'd be hard-pressed to find a character who actually likes Junkrat. Most of his interactions consist of the other characters speaking negatively to him, sometimes involving his treasure. Even his partner-in-crime, Roadhog, thinks little of him.
** In "Junkertown: The Plan", it's revealed that Roadhog had a good reason to be annoyed with Junkrat. Junkrat lead the pair on a worldwide crime spree so that they can have revenge on the Queen of Junkertown. The plan could have worked, but Junkrat's short attention span, hyperactiveness, and flamboyancy destroyed their chances of getting past the entrance gate unhindered.
* FrothyMugsOfWater: Funnily enough, in a game where people do in fact drink actual alcoholic beverages, Junkrat's weathered flask is actually filled with ice-cold boba milk tea.
* TheGadfly: He is quite gregarious and likes to chat, but he does not seem to have (or ''ever have had'') any close friends he ever mentions, except for Roadhog, whom he hired as a bodyguard, probably due to his lack of any normal socialization. Or sanity. Or hygiene.
* GadgeteerGenius: All his weapons and traps are clearly homemade, yet he can go toe-to-toe with heroes like [[HardLight Symmetra]] or [[PoweredArmor Pharah]] and win. It's implied that his ArtificialLimbs were also made by his own hand.
* GeniusDitz: When it comes to explosives, he’s peerlessly brilliant and capable of assembling highly effective tools and munitions from scrap with no apparent credentials or education. When it comes to just about everything else… not so much, including explosives ''[[TooDumbToLive safety]]''. The guy is completely tone-deaf in any situation that requires the most basic nuance, and many of his problems are brought upon himself by virtue of his inability to just keep his big mouth shut. He also apparently can't even properly count to ''two''.
* [[GenkiGirl Genki Guy]]: Just look at the "Junkertown" short — he's constantly bouncing, jumping, rapidly changing position, and otherwise being a rubbery little ball of energy.
* GlassCannon: He can put out exorbitant amounts of area-of-effect damage if he positions his mines and grenades correctly, but using his mines to attack denies him his only mobility option. Combined with his relatively low overall movement speed, a careless Junkrat is a sitting duck to those with good aim, being especially susceptible to Pharah and Widowmaker, who can kill him with one or two well-placed shots from far outside of his effective range.
* GrenadeLauncher: His main weapon is a custom built ''Frag Launcher''.
* GrenadeSpam: His ''Frag Launcher'' is a custom-made grenade launcher that allows him to shoot explosive grenades at people with a decent fire rate. [[PowerfulButInaccurate It may be inaccurate as all get-out and near-useless against airborne targets,]] but spamming grenades is usually effective for area denial, especially at chokepoints. In addition, a close-range grenade-''Concussive Mine'' combo can near-instantly two-shot most heroes (doing around 240 damage if it hits properly), making him an exceptionally deadly ambush hero in close quarters.
* GroinAttack: Does this to [[HoistByHisOwnPetard himself]] in one of his intros, aptly titled "Unfortunate".
* HamAndDeadpanDuo: He's the Ham to Roadhog's Deadpan. The "Junkertown" short even puts this into their motions: Roadhog is slow, controlled, and vaguely realistic, while Junkrat is constantly in very exaggerated motion.
* HandicappedBadass: He presumably lost both an arm and leg to a explosives-related accident and had to replace them with ArtificialLimbs. Still doesn't stop him from kicking ass.
* HappyHarlequinHat: Not entirely in his "Jester" skin, but his hair is styled to give the impression of one.
* HeroWithAnFInGood: In "Going Legit" he believed that he was saving people from Omnic terrorists but the hostages only came to mind after he destroyed the warehouse filled with robots. [[spoiler: Fortunately there was never any hostages because it was an insurance fraud scheme.]] Junkrat does want to leave the life of crime and does try his best to be civil and friendly with teammates but the wasteland corrupted his mind on civil behavior and his teammates are repulsed by him.
* HiddenDepths:
** If "[[ADayInTheLimelight Going Legit]]" is to go by, Junkrat at one point wanted to leave crime behind and go the legal way by getting a job that'll earn him big cash while letting him do what he does best (which is blowing things up). [[spoiler:His desire to go legit made him and Roadhog targets for a CorruptCorporateExecutive who hired them to take the fall for an insurance fraud scheme, specifically because honest workers are big targets for the legal system. Now thanks to that asshole, although Junkrat and Roadhog catch on and [[KarmicDeath kill him]], any chances of living honestly are shot to hell]].
** Junkrat is also able to speak some Mandarin Chinese.
** In the "Wasted Land" comic, Roadhog, in a moment of quiet introspection, notes that Junkrat is a dishonest idiot who lies to himself, suggesting some psychological defense mechanisms that might be a response to something that hurt him at one point.
** His prosthetics are obviously pretty ramshackle and made from scrap, but him being unpopular in Junkertown implies that he made them himself. This seems to imply that he is actually ''really'' good with technology, since they fucntion just as well as Symmetra's extremely high-end hardlight arm.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard:
** A very specific case--Junkrat's GrenadeSpam, while powerful and useful as area denial, is also relatively slow, and if he doesn't do enough damage to outright kill his enemies, enemy healers can build ult charge off it, and Zarya can build off energy through her shields. If you're not careful, Junkrat can be the indirect cause of his team losing the next fight due to being melted by Zarya or saved by an extra enemy support ult.
** The "Unfortunate" highlight intro has him fire a grenade, but in an inversion of CameraAbuse, it bounces off of the camera and [[GroinAttack hits him in the valuables]] instead.
* HypocriticalHeartwarming: He might not have any problems making fat jokes at Roadhog's expense, but he [[BerserkButton loses it]] when someone else calls him fat. Killing a Roadhog on his team also warrants this type of response:
--> '''Junkrat''': Hey! I'm the only one who gets to kill the big lug!
* InsistentTerminology: Mei refers to him as TheBully, but Junkrat finds it inaccurate... he's more of a ''freedom fighter''. A misguided one.
* InsultBackfire: Reaper calls him a reckless lunatic to which Junkrat takes as a compliment.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: For a certain value of "friendship", but there's a twenty-three year age gap between Roadhog and him.
* InvulnerableKnuckles: His melee attack? Not a pistol whip with his grenade launcher or a swipe with his cybernetic limb, but an outright screaming jab with his regular hand.
* JerkassHasAPoint: He's a violent, explosives-obsessed criminal, but in the comic "Going Legit", he comments that Overwatch's idealism ultimately led to its downfall. Given Overwatch's turbulent history, he may be right...
* TheKnightsWhoSaySquee: Junkrat is a fan of Wrecking Ball, although he cannot believe Hammond is the pilot, much to Hammond's annoyance.
* {{Knockback}}: The main property of his ''Concussion Mine''; while it's so-so in the damage department, it can easily disrupt an enemy formation or push someone into dangerous situations or [[BottomlessPits off to their doom]]. He can also [[RocketJump use the knockback to propel himself around the map]].
* TheKrampus: The aptly titled "Krampus" legendary skin turns Junkrat into the Krampus himself. He features glowing green eyes, goat horn, sharpened teeth, extremely gruff goat chest hair sticking out from his ragged Santa coat, and his Riptire is burning hot with the locked away teddy bears sticking out. He shoots red-hot chunks of coal out of his gun.
* LargeHam: His actions are constantly exaggerated, and he is not a quiet speaker.
-->'''Junkrat:''' (bouncing from Roadhog's left to his right and back again) What was it you think got us the boot? ''Stealing'' the Queen's ''cash''? ''Blowing up'' her ''summer shack''? The ''BEATDOWN'' at the ''BAR?!''
* LaughablyEvil: Junkrat is a criminal, but most of his emotes and interactions are lighthearted and amusing to watch. His goal is to have you laugh right alongside him just before the boom.
* LaughingMad: It's not uncommon to hear him giggling like a maniac, his laughing emote just further invokes this.
* LeanAndMean: To contrast his FatBastard partner Roadhog.
* LittleGuyBigBuddy: Roadhog's bodyguard duty means not only is he protecting Junkrat from other criminals, it has him basically babysitting Junkrat to protect the skinny idiot from his own recklessness. Meanwhile, Junkrat has (perhaps naively) come to regard Roadhog as a friend.
* MadBomber: A complete psycho who uses bombs for the majority of his abilities.
* MadScientist: His "Dr. Junkenstein" Halloween skin makes him into one, [[Literature/{{Frankenstein}} just like the person that the skin takes its name from.]]
* MeaningfulName:
** His real name, Jamison Fawkes, brings to mind Guy Fawkes, the infamous provincial English Catholic who attempted to blow up the House of Lords in 1605. Along with that, "Guy Fawkes Night" is a holiday that was once commonly celebrated in Australia, which is Junkrat's home country. One of his voice lines even references the famous ''Gunpowder Plot'' poem:
--> '''Junkrat''': ''Remember, remember''... what the heck was I saying again?
** "Junkertown: The Plan" involved him and Roadhog plotting to get revenge on the queen of Junkertown by using explosives. Sound familiar?
** His moniker "Junkrat" also counts — like a real rat, he looks around for pieces of discarded junk that no one wants and converts them into useful tools.
* MonsterClown: His "Jester" and "Fool" legendary skins, natch.
* MotorMouth: Junkrat doesn't know when to shut up. In "Wasted Land", everyone and their mother in Junkertown knew about Junkrat's treasure because he presumably kept boasting about it rather than keeping quiet or making better excuses for denying its existence.
* MurderIsTheBestSolution: In "Junkertown: The Plan", he believes that there are two things that solve every problem, money and explosives.
* NeverMyFault: In "Junkertown: The Plan", Junkrat repeatedly blames Roadhog for messing everything up and ultimately getting them kicked out of Junkertown. Junkrat's track record so far would suggest he's the one who screwed up. When they're on the verge of enacting their plan at the end, he goes out of his way to stress that Roadhog better not do anything to screw it all up. [[spoiler:You get no points for guessing who actually does.]]
* NonchalantDodge: In contrast to other "sitting" emotes, Junkrat's "Lounging" emote takes up very little vertical space in comparison to his default stance. With exceptionally good timing and luck, you can actually make him dodge bullets as he flops himself to the ground.
* NoodleIncident: Whatever secret he discovered in the omnium, which got him the entirety of Junkertown coming after him wanting that secret for themselves.
* NotEvilJustMisunderstood: Invokes this trope in response to Mei calling him "terrible" by saying that he's a (misguided) freedom fighter.
* OddCouple: It's suggested in an interaction that Junkrat and Roadhog live together in the outback, but both have different ideas of cleanliness. Roadhog tells Junkrat to stop leaving a mess on the table and Junkrat responds with an offended tone and calls himself a "courteous house guest".
* OddFriendship: The friendship between Roadhog and Junkrat seems one-sided due to Roadhog's stoicism and pessimism. Junkrat tries to get him to socially engage with teammates by recalling a joke, but Roadhog generally responds with hostility. However, the co-ordinated sprays and anniversary emote show that Roadhog can be friendly when he wants to.
* OhCrap:
** In the comic short "Going Legit", he plans to invade a warehouse by blowing a hole through the roof and going from there... only to realize after jumping in that it's a ''long'' way down.
---> '''Junkrat''': I'm coming for ya, you scrap-headed—! ...''Oh-there's-no-top-floor-you-sons-of''...
** PlayedForLaughs with his Shot Put highlight intro, which features him completely whiffing on throwing a live bomb. He throws, trips, and then looks on in worry at the ticking bomb mere inches away from his face. The "Poing!" sound effect really sells it.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: He and Roadhog might not always get along, but kill Roadhog in gameplay and Junkrat ''will'' call you out on it, saying that he's the only one who gets to kill the big guy.
* ThePigPen: He isn't the cleanest-looking hero due to the ash and flaming hair. An interaction with Roadhog has him being told off for leaving a mess on the table, but Junkrat mockingly says he's hurt by this and calls himself a "courteous house guest".
* PlayerGuidedMissile: ''RIP-Tire'' is basically a remote-controlled explosive that can be steered into enemies to really ruin their day.
* PokeThePoodle: As well as bank robberies and stealing an ice cream truck, perhaps his most heinous crime is stealing pop from a kid.
* PostApunkalypticArmor: Wears attire that wouldn't be uncommon in an [[TheApunkalypse Apunkalypse setting]] like Film/MadMax.
* PowerfulButInaccurate: All of Junkrat's weaponry are parabolic-launching projectiles, while every other character has at least one straight-firing one, meaning hitting a target is thus a matter of aim, calculation, experience, and occasionally, luck. On the other hand, his weapons have some of the highest DPS in the game, he has significant burst damage potential with his ''Steel Trap'' and ''Concussion Mine'' on top of his usual grenades, he can fire behind obstacles, and if everything else fails, he can just GrenadeSpam with impunity for major area denial.
-->''"Ah! [[LampshadeHanging Aiming's overrated!]]"''
* PsychoForHire: In "Going Legit", both he and Roadhog were hired to rescue some hostages from Omnic Terrorists. [[spoiler:This turned out to be a trap, as the businessman was simply using them to gain the insurance money and possibly claim their $25,000,000 bounty.]] However, in "Junkertown: The Plan", Junkrat didn't realise that his initial plan will destroy the stolen money until Roadhog brought it to his attention.
* PsychopathicManchild: In his and Roadhog's "A Moment in Crime" trailer, he is seen robbing an arcade, and he's often laughing and giggling during battles. His relationship to Roadhog also appears to be similar to a hyperactive child and a stressed babysitter.
* RedOniBlueOni: The Red Oni to Roadhog's Blue Oni.
* RemoteYetVulnerable: While steering the ''RIP-Tire'', Junkrat is immobilized and effectively blind.
* ResourcefulRodent: Invoked with his rat motif and name, he's a demolitions expert who haphazardly makes his own explosives with scrap metal and car parts.
* RhymesOnADime: In the Halloween trailer, Junkrat is the narrator and spends most of the time rhyming.
* RockBeatsLaser: In stark contrast to the rest of the cast using highly advanced and futuristic weapons and equipment, Junkrat's means of combat consist of weapons built entirely from scrap. Even the frag grenades he fires are entirely homemade.
* RocketJump: With his ''Concussion Mine''. Unlike the other heroes' version of this, his own Mines don't damage him at all, so his conc-jumping is only limited by the cooldown. Savvy players can take advantage of this to propel him to high places where Junkrat becomes harder to counter. It's also possible to use it while in mid-air to propel yourself further.
* SkillGateCharacter: He's quite easy to pick up, and his kit contains a lot of bulky burst damage, making him the one-shotting bane of low-level players' existence. However, he tends to fall off in higher-level scenarios since his damage usually comes from counting on enemies to make mistakes, and his [[PowerfulButInaccurate inaccuracy]] can make him somewhat underwhelming when compared to other more skill-based, but more practical heroes. It also opens a possibility of [[TheMillstone accidentally assisting the enemy team]] by giving healers ult charge or Zarya her shield charge if he can't properly secure kills. That said, his damage ''is'' considerably high, so those who can master laying down as much as he can can still make him a menace, and when it comes to tightly-packed enemy teams, Junkrat is unparalleled in his niche.
* SlasherSmile: Sports a huge scary grin that would make even [[{{Franchise/Batman}} The Joker]] proud.
* SpikesOfVillainy: Like Roadhog, his outfit has spikes all over the place, and he's also a dangerous criminal.
* StatusInflictionAttack: His Steel Trap clamps onto the first enemy to walk over it, rooting them in place, along with dealing [[FixedDamageAttack 80 damage]].
* StillWearingTheOldColors: Still wears his Junker attire despite having cut ties with them.
* StuffBlowingUp: Most of his kit involves explosives in some way.
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: Some of his pre-game dialogue has characters like Hanzo and Reaper inquiring about the Omnium treasure Junkrat found in the past, causing him to nervously feign ignorance.
* SoreLoser: One of his voicelines when respawning after getting a kill with [[TakingYouWithMe Total Mayhem]] has him [[BlatantLies vehemently denying being this]].
* TakingYouWithMe: The point of his ''Total Mayhem'' ability. If he dies, he can at least hope that the bombs he drops can take his enemies out.
* TalkativeLoon: He has quite a lot to say when using his abilities, getting kills, etc. [[TheCloudcuckoolanderWasRight Sometimes he makes sense]], other times... not so much.
-->'''When laying down a Concussion Mine''': Stop me if you've heard this one before!
* TattooedCrook: He has a faded tattoo of a flaming skull with crossbones on his right shoulder, and is a notorious criminal.
* TerroristsWithoutACause: He and his partner Roadhog are on an international crime spree because they felt like it. While they are mere criminals, albeit really dangerous, the "Moment in Crime" report describes them as Terrorists.
* TooDumbToLive: Jamison is real big on explosives and real little on safety, as his missing limbs can attest. One of his highlight intros shows him detonating his own mine while he's standing on it to send himself flying like a deranged thrill seeker, and others just show him being completely careless and irresponsible with his own grenades. Even when he's on the verge of having everything go his way in ''Junkertown - The Plan'', he still [[spoiler:finds a way to mess it up by loudly announcing his presence and getting both himself and Roadhog locked out of Junkertown while standing directly on top of a cart loaded with live explosives]]. The only reason he's still alive at all is likely because the universe (and, by extension, the community) finds his antics [[TheChewToy amusing]].
-->'''Roadhog (his only line in the whole short):''' (*sighs*) ''Idiot.''
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: It's not given a lot of focus in-game aside from a single line during setup, but [[https://66.media.tumblr.com/bea07e345605b5037291ff2526fd4e3b/tumblr_o8j4g9ctKq1uwwggho1_1280.jpg Jeff Kaplan confirmed in a forum post that he carries half-sweet milk tea with boba in his hip canteen]]. ''Overwatch: The Official Cookbook'' is full of recipes inspired by the game's characters and the foods of their cultures, but Junkrat gets a boba tea recipe called [[{{Pun}} "Bobas Away"]] based entirely on this bit of trivia.
* TranquilFury: For a crazy guy who loves explosives, in the comic short "Going Legit", Junkrat responds not with explosive rage as expected, but with cold fury [[spoiler:when he realizes the CorruptCorporateExecutive hired him and Roadhog for the purpose of taking the fall for his insurance fraud scheme]], and his usual joviality takes on an icy edge [[spoiler:when he confronts his employer and blows him up to kingdom come]]. This was right after his outburst towards a cop who [[BerserkButton called Roadhog "fat"]].
* TrickBomb: His ''Concussion Mine'' blasts opponents and sends them flying into oblivion, while also helping him reach normally inaccessible areas. Oh, and they can be activated remotely at any time.
* TrapMaster: His ''Steel Trap'' ability allows him to place large, custom-made bear traps that clamp onto opposing players and immobilizes them, doing 80 damage in the process.
* UnwittingPawn: In the comic short "Going Legit", he and Roadhog are hired by a wealthy CorruptCorporateExecutive [[spoiler:to take the fall for an insurance fraud scheme under the guise of "rescuing" some factory workers from Omnic terrorists. Once Roadhog and Junkrat catch on, they kill the guy by hanging him with chains several hundred stories high in the air and then blowing him (and his office building) to Kingdom Come]].
* VagabondBuddies: Junkrat and Roadhog have travelled around the world together in pursuit of revenge against The Queen of Junkertown. The [[OnlyInItForTheMoney authenticity]] of their [[DefrostingIceKing friendship]] is yet to be [[VitriolicBestBuds defined.]]
* VerbalBackpedaling: His quote as his team is losing their objective:
-->'''Junkrat''': They're taking the point! Time to blow it — ''them'' up! I meant them.
* VillainProtagonist: Naturally, since he's been orchestrating a string of crimes across the world with Roadhog, and is one of the playable characters.
* VillainousUnderdog: Junkrat is an outcast in Junkertown; his fellow Junkers either dismiss him as an annoying idiot or try to intimidate him in order to find his treasure. Unlike his companion, Roadhog, Junkrat tries to socialise and try to keep things amicable despite irritating his coworkers in the process.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Seems to be his relationship with Roadhog, they might insult each other, but they also have their moments showing they care for each other.
* VoiceForTheVoiceless: Since Roadhog is usually asocial and mostly silent. The louder Junkrat speaks on his behalf, whether [[MotorMouth Roadhog wants him to or not]]. For the audience, Junkrat usually translates Roadhog's written dialogue, since his speech bubbles consist of ellipses.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: Both he and Roadhog never wear shirts (probably due to Australia's blistering heat, shoulder gear notwithstanding), but unlike Roadhog, who is massive with fat and muscles, Junkrat is all muscle even though he's rather on the scrawny side. [[MrFanservice Not that there's anything wrong with it]], except maybe the cold temperatures of Volskaya Industries or Nepal.
-->'''Junkrat''': Brrr! This is not my kind of weather! Anyone have an extra coat? Or some mittens? Oh, I would kill for some mittens.
* WaterGunsAndBalloons: His Beachrat skin has his Frag Launcher resembling a toy water gun.
* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: Junkrat's first and last idea to dealing with any obstacle is find a way to blow it up.
-->'''Junkrat''': There are two things that solve any problem: money and explosives.
* WheresTheKaboom: In Junkrat's "Dud?" emote, Junkrat lights a firework in his hand and holds it away, only for the fuse to fizzle out. Curious about the lack of detonation, Junkrat shakes the firework and holds it to his face, only for it to ''then'' blow up.
* YellowEyesOfSneakiness: Has yellow eyes and his gameplay has some elements of stealth regarding how he places his traps.
* YouDirtyRat: Rats serve as an AnimalMotif for him, being a filthy, creepy-looking man with a high-pitched voice.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: He looks like he's in his 30s at least, but he's only 25, the third youngest human character after D.Va and Brigitte. Though to be fair, the radiation and constant sun exposure from living in Australia probably hasn't done wonders for him. Many were actually surprised to learn that he is ''twenty-three years'' Roadhog's junior.
* YourTerroristsAreOurFreedomFighters: Junkrat executes a lot of terror and mayhem sprees for fun enough to be labelled as one of those loose cannon terrorists, but in his mind, he's being some sort of freedom fighter, a misguided one, for some unknown cause (or none at all).

\\
Mei is a scientist who has taken the fight to preserve the environment into her own hands.\\
\\
Though many blamed the planet's escalating, unexplained climate phenomena on the advent of new technologies, the rapidly growing Omnic population, and drastically increased consumption of resources, the true cause remained unknown. To find a solution, Overwatch established a series of eco-Watchpoints at remote, critical locations worldwide.\\
\\
Dr. Mei-Ling Zhou (周美灵 ''Zhōu Měi-líng'' [[labelnote:Note]]Her Chinese name can be seen in the news ticker found in the Lijiang Tower "Night Market" map[[/labelnote]]) was a member of this multiyear initiative. A peerless climatologist, she had introduced cutting-edge innovations in the field of climate manipulation that protected at-risk areas in Asia and beyond. She was assigned to the program's monitoring station at Watchpoint: Antarctica when disaster struck: a sudden, catastrophic polar storm battered the installation and cut it off from the outside world, leaving the facility damaged and the scientists stranded. As their supplies dwindled, they entered cryostasis in a last-ditch effort to survive until a rescue attempt could be made.\\
\\
But that rescue never came. It was years later when the team's cryogenics chamber was finally discovered. Mei, still in hibernation, was the only survivor. The world Mei awoke to had gone through considerable changes: Overwatch was no more, the serious climate issues had worsened, and none of the eco-Watchpoints were in operation. Any clues that they had uncovered were lost.\\
\\
Mei has decided to continue her work on her own. Equipped with a portable version of her climate-manipulation technology, she travels around the world, hoping to re-establish the eco-network and track down the causes of the threats to the planet's ecosystem.\\
\\
Mei received the recall to join the new Overwatch after Winston reinstated the organization, indirectly awakening her from cryostasis. She has since rejoined Overwatch, becoming the second member confirmed to accept the call.\\
\\
Mei uses her cryogenic technology in battle to impair and restrict her foes' ability to move.
* '''Endothermic Blaster''', Her main weapon fires a short-range stream of frost that damages, slows, and eventually freezes enemies solid. She can also use it to fire piercing '''Icicles''' as mid-range projectiles.
* '''Cryo-Freeze''' encases Mei in a block of ice, making herself invulnerable while rapidly regenerating health.
* '''Ice Wall''', She can raise a large ice formation that has many versatile uses: it can be used to break line of sight, defend against enemy fire, block paths for her foes, and raise her allies and herself to higher ground and creating pathways by shooting below her feet.
* '''Blizzard''', Her ultimate sends out her weather-modification drone to an area, creating a large zone of freezing winds and snow that, much like her main weapon, damage, slow, and eventually freeze enemies caught within.
-----
* AbnormalAmmo:
** Rather than wielding a traditional firearm to shoot bullets or [[EnergyWeapon some kind of energy]], Mei opts for a FreezeRay powered by some kind of icy coolant (''Rise and Shine'' shows her MacGyvering the chemical mixture herself, and even she's surprised at how effective it is), which can be sprayed to slowly freeze enemies or directly fired as deadly icicles.
** Taken to [[UpToEleven a hilarious extreme]] in her "Honeydew" skin, where her blaster is loaded with super-cold ''boba'', with tapioca pearls visible as her ammo (milk tea, apparently) depletes, or when you aim upward.
* ActionSurvivor: She's the only survivor of her team of climatologists and doesn't really have any non-academic training. However, she still managed to improvise a pretty awesome tool/weapon to aid her when she realised the severity of her situation and struck out on her own to get the word out.
* AmmunitionBackpack: Carries a large transparent canister, presumably filled with cooling agent. The end of the ''Rise and Shine'' cinematic shows that the bulk of it is Snowball's battery charging station.
* TheAloner: Ends up being this after the cryostasis failure on Ecopoint Antarctica.
* ArtEvolution: ''Overwatch 2'' changes Mei's hairstyle very slightly into a more feminine appearance with a new hair dec holding it in place, and incorporates elements of a Chinese {{Qipao}} into her suit's design instead of the full heavy winter coat.
* AsianAndNerdy: A brilliant Chinese climatologist who is able to correct ''[[OmnidisciplinaryScientist Winston's]]'' calculations on occasion.
* ApologeticAttacker: Some of her lines after a kill are "Sorry, sorry, [[RuleOfThree I'm sorry,]] [[ApologisesALot sorry!]]" and "Sorry about that!"
* BadassAdorable: Cute as a button, and armed with devices which can freeze the hell out of you.
* BadassBookworm: She's an excellent climatologist who uses her technology to fight alongside the other heroes.
* BadassNormal: While surrounded by super-soldiers, cyborgs, assassins, robots, and power armored warriors, Mei is a scientist with no known combat training, genetic tampering, or cybernetics. Yet in-game she fights right alongside them with no problem, and in her story she presses on despite massive loss and stacked odds.
* BarrierWarrior: Mei can place ''Ice Walls'' to act as barriers, and unlike other barriers in the game, these ones are physical impediments. This means that in addition to blocking incoming attacks, they can physically divide and separate the enemy team (and potentially [[MutualDisadvantage your own]]), and completely block line of sight for certain abilities.
* BayonetYa: Her Endothermic Blaster has a bayonet attached to it in her Yeti Hunter and Abominable skins, although it is simply [[OrnamentalWeapon ornamental]].
* BecomingTheCostume:
** Her "Rescue" and "Firefighter" skins change her hero-change line from "Mei, checking in!" to "Mei on duty," and gives her a bonus "on-fire" line in "I'm on fire! [[LampshadeHanging Isn't that against regulations?"]]
** Her "Mei-rry" skin gives her a bonus line of her cheerily saying "Happy holidays!" [[MoodWhiplash upon killing an enemy.]]
** Her [[Myth/ChineseMythology "Chang'e"]] skin (not the "Luna" recolor) gives her the line "Those astronauts never found me!"[[note]]This is a reference to [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chang%27e#Space_travel a joking conversation between Houston command and Michael Collins during the Apollo 11 mission]], with Collins being asked to keep an eye out for "the bunny girl." He didn't find her.[[/note]] She also has some unique quotes while on the Horizon Lunar Base map, including a simple "Home sweet home."
** Her "Beekeeper" outfit gives her the respawn line "Ouch, really stings!"
* BigBeautifulWoman: Her "Pajamei" skin shows off Mei's stomach rolls and HartmanHips even more than her usual heavy winter parka shows. "Honeydew" cranks it UpToEleven.
* BigfootSasquatchAndYeti: She seems to have a fondness for yetis, with doodles of them in notes found in Ecopoint: Antarctica, her "Yeti Hunter" and "Abominable" skins, and a pair of yeti-themed slippers.
* BigFun: Downplayed example. Mei's not exactly overweight, but her thermal suit gives her the appearance of such... and she's definitely got the "fun" part down.
* BlatantLies: In the ''Yeti Hunter'' game mode for the Winter Wonderland 2017 event, Mei will call out to the Yeti that "(we) won't hurt you." The only way to win the match is to hurt him.
* BlueIsHeroic: Her winter gear has a lot of blue, and she firmly believes in fighting for a better world.
* BrainyBrunette: Has brown hair, and she's a peerless climatologist.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Beneath her adorable outlook, Mei has a very negative view of bullies. This is why she hates Junkrat and dismisses him in spite of his [[AffablyEvil joyful manner]], and she'll proclaim her hatred towards bullies to any villainous characters that she just killed. In ''Mei's Snowball Offensive'', where everyone is Mei and shooting snowballs at each other, she'll sometimes say "I'm putting a rock in this one" while making a snowball. And she gets a very "Time to die" expression on her face when lining up an icicle shot.
* BoringButPractical: Her moveset is chiefly concerned with slowing down her opponents rather than outright killing them. Since time is a major component on all the maps, delaying the demise of your enemies paradoxically debilitates their assaults more than murder, because it will take them longer to reach the objective (if they survive) or to respawn (if they are killed while frozen).
* BreakTheCutie: The ''Rise and Shine'' short shows Mei when she first woke up from her cryo-sleep. First, she finds out the data she was collecting is way worse than originally predicted, next she finds she and the team have been asleep for 9 years. ''Then'' she finds out Overwatch had been shut down, meaning rescue isn't coming, and finally, she finds out that her whole team is dead except for her. This all happens in just a few minutes. Ultimately subverted in that after getting over the initial shock and grief, she's still as cheerful and optimistic and even more determined than ever to get the word out for the good of the world and to honour her fallen colleagues.
* CatchPhrase: "Our world is worth fighting for." Aside from it being her selection quote, the Chinese translation of it is one of her manual voice lines, and when [[TheWorldIsJustAwesome viewing the earth through a telescope on the Horizon Lunar Colony,]] she'll say "Our world ''is'' worth fighting for."
* ChineseVampire: Mei got a proper Jiangshi skin and hopping emote for Halloween Terror 2017. She even has cute BlushStickers like [[VideoGame/DarkStalkers Hsien-Ko.]]
* ColdHam: Pun not intended. Mei does not raise her voice or shout, but when she expresses an emotion (such as excitement or anger), it carries a weight of emotion all the same.
* ColdSleepColdFuture: She spent ''years'' in cryogenic sleep, waiting for a rescue from a violent polar storm that never came. By the time she woke up, Overwatch was dismantled, the Earth's climate grew even worse, and all of the established eco-Watchposts were long defunct, leaving much of her co-workers' research lost.
* CoupDeGrace: Perhaps the most memetic example in the game. Step 1: Freeze an enemy solid. Step 2: Aim an icicle to their head, point-blank range.
* CuteLittleFangs: In her "Jiangshi" skin, the corners of her mouth contain two little vampire fangs.
* TheCutie: Very adorable, huggable with big eyes, wears NerdGlasses, and is ridiculously sweet? Yes, she definitely qualifies.
* {{Determinator}}: When she woke up from cryosleep, she learned that basically everything had gotten worse, the destruction of Overwatch leaving no-one aware that her research station needed help, all her coworkers had died due to their cyropods malfunctioning, and eventually even Snowball had to depower temporarily, leaving her utterly alone. She continued soldiering on even if it meant leaving her remote eco-Watchpost on foot, realizing that allowing herself to just quit wouldn't help herself or anyone else. She may not look the part, but her quote above speaks for itself. At the end of ''Rise and Shine'', she's faced with a frozen wasteland that stretches as far as the eye can see, untold miles away from any glimpse of civilization. Her response is to fasten up her arctic gear and just get to walking. Overwatch needs rebuilding and her life's work is endangered, so she is not about to just sit and wait for a rescue. Remember, [[ActionSurvivor she isn't a trained warrior or super soldier, she is a just a civilian scientist who worked for Overwatch]]. One of her unlockable sound clips has the quote in Mandarin.
* DissonantSerenity:
** Most likely unintentional on Blizzard’s part, but anyone who has ever had a good view of being frozen and promptly killed by Mei would notice that she appears to be concentrating very hard and very calmly on the moment (see the link in SlasherSmile below).
** One of her lines in ''Mei's Snowball Offensive'' when refilling her snowball gun is a chipper "I'm putting a rock in this one!"
* DueToTheDead: She leaves a hot mug at the foot of the cryo-booths of her fallen comrades before leaving the base.
* ElementalAbsorption: Zig-zagged. She can freeze herself to restore health, but ice-based projectiles from a Mei on the other team will still injure or kill her.
* ElementalBaggage: Her ammo is (presumably) coolant, and like the ammo used by all heroes, she can reload without limit.
* TheEveryman: Was stated by the developers that she was designed to be more relatable to the audience than the other heroes. Indeed, Mei is a NonActionGuy ScienceHero rather than adventurers or super villains like the rest of the cast.
* FanserviceWithASmile: Mei's "Honeydew" skin — which gives her a uniform for a bubble tea shop, complete with [[AbnormalAmmo some of the stuff in her blaster]] — is more cute than outright sexy, but nonetheless shows off a lot more skin than any of her other outfits, most notably with [[WhoWearsShortShorts her shorts]] [[ShesGotLegs revealing a lot of her legs]].
* FishOutOfTemporalWater: Downplayed. She does mention that she has difficulty getting used to the "newer" technology of the present day.
* ForScience: She states this as the reason why she's hunting the yeti in ''Yeti Hunter'': "We just want to study you!"
* FreezeRay: Her primary attack, where her weapon fires a continuous short-ranged stream of frost that slows and freezes enemies in their tracks for a few seconds.
* GadgeteerGenius: She developed the ''Endothermic Blaster'' herself as shown in ''Rise and Shine'', seemingly out of spare parts and chemicals found around the Ecopoint.
* GiantWaistRibbon: It's not on her waist, but her "Luna" and "Chang'e" skins have a big, fancy bow on her canister backpack that evokes this trope.
* HarmlessFreezing: When she freezes herself. It's not just harmless; it actually heals her and makes her ImmuneToBullets. Also, her weapon's primary fire is mostly used to slow and freeze enemies, dealing barely any damage; for that, she has giant icicles to the head.
* HartmanHips: Quite noticeable in her "Pajamei" skin.
* HealThyself: When she encases herself in a block of ice, she heals herself for the duration of the ice block, before it breaks.
* HeroicBSOD: Mei suffers one upon learning that the stasis pods of the other scientists all failed. In ''Rise & Shine'', she huddles herself into a fetal position and mourns their loss. A JumpCut shows her still in that position for an indeterminate amount of time before she snaps out of it.
* HeroicSacrifice: In the ''Rise & Shine'' cinematic, after the last battery runs out of power, Snowball transfers his own battery power to give Mei just enough to finish building her Endothermic Blaster. Fortunately, he can recharge through solar power.
* HiddenBuxom: According to [[http://www.pcgamesn.com/overwatch/overwatchs-new-heroes-and-the-design-behind-them concept art of her]], Mei has a surprisingly large chest underneath her thermal suit. The ''Rise and Shine'' cinematic shows she isn't quite as busty as her concept art, but still has around a D-cup size.
* HumanPopsicle: Her primary fire and Ultimate turns enemies into this, allowing her and her allies to pick them off while they're helpless. She can also do this to herself, encasing herself in a block of ice that lets her avoid damage and heal, but she's totally immobile until the ice breaks.
* AnIcePerson: She primarily uses ice for her moves, either by freezing enemies solid, firing painful icicles at them, or blocking them off with a giant ''Ice Wall.''
* AnIceSuit: Wears a thick set of arctic gear. Partly due to LimitedWardrobe (her former job was as an arctic researcher), partly to avoid HoistByHisOwnPetard (she wields a FreezeRay).
* IconicOutfit: Mei's early concept designs depicted her wearing a blue tank top underneath her heavy coat. It has become just as recognizable as her in-game outfit.
* InstantDeathRadius: Unless you happen to have an escape ability (or a teammate bails you out), once you get caught by her FreezeRay, it's just a matter of a few seconds before you're completely helpless and she executes you with an icicle to the head.
* InstantIceJustAddCold: Not only do her abilities instantly create entire meters-tall ice blocks, any enemy exposed to her primary fire for two seconds is briefly frozen solid.
* JumpedAtTheCall: In ''Rise and Shine'', after repairing her outpost's communication systems and reconnecting with the comms satellite, Mei received Winston's Emergency Agent Recall transmission. She quietly made a simple yes, immediately geared up (as all vehicles at the station had been rendered derelict), and was last seen traveling to link up with Winston, becoming the second known former member (after Tracer) to return to active duty.
* JumpScare: Her Halloween-exclusive highlight intro, "Ice Scream", has Snowball (dressed as a BedSheetGhost) pop behind and scare her. She screams and activates her Cryo-Freeze, then falls over while still frozen. Snowball laughs.
* KillItWithIce: She excels at this, with an ''Endothermic Blaster'' that slows and freezes enemies momentarily or shoots icicles for great damage, and an Ultimate that creates a localized blizzard which quickly slows, freezes, and potentially kills anyone who doesn't escape in time.
* TheKnightsWhoSaySquee: She's a fan of Winston's glasses, thinking they are "cute." Winston proceeds to nervously compliment hers.
* LibationForTheDead: In ''Rise and Shine'', before Mei departs from Antarctica at the end, she pours tea for her deceased colleagues and leaves their respective mugs in front of their failed cryo-pods.
* TheLoad: PlayedWith. Blizzard is very aware that Mei's kit, her ''Ice Wall'' in particular, can often hinder her teammates. The Anniversary update added a voiceline that reflects this.
-->'''Mei:''' I was only trying to help!
* LostInTranslation: Her ultimate quote is "Dòng zhù! Bùxǔ zǒu!" (Chinese: "冻住!不许走!") which literally translates to "Freeze! Don't move!" However, "Dòng zhù!" in Chinese doesn't have the connotations that "Freeze!" has in English (as in "don't move", e.g. a police officer telling you to "freeze"), and thus some of the meaning is lost. Then again, she ''is'' telling them to ''literally'' freeze. [[note]]In Mandarin, the term synonymous with "Freeze!" literally translates into "stand/hold still".[[/note]]
* MacGyvering: Mei had to improvise to build her Endothermic Blaster with what she had laying around the base. The main chassis of the blaster is a hair dryer, and the cooling agent is water-based.
%%* MeaningfulName: "Mei" (beautiful) refers to her beauty, while "Ling" (spirit) refers to her determination.
* MechanicallyUnusualFighter: While Mei is definitively marked as a "Damage" hero, in practice, she rests in a unique gameplay niche which merges in elements primarily found in Tank heroes, making her sort of an inverse to Roadhog[[note]]She was originally designed as a "Defense" hero, a category of damage-dealing heroes who were theoretically considered better at guarding objectives, as opposed to "Offense" heroes who were better at directly taking them. The separation was deemed redundant and the two were merged in June 2018 to form the current "Damage" role, taking Mei with them[[/note]]. While she technically does have the power to outright kill enemies, she's short-ranged, has no mobility skills to move her around faster than her normal walk speed, and overall not as reliable in that regard as her "Damage" classification might suggest. Her greater strengths are in impairing enemies through unique means — whether it be through freezing them and creating disruptive physical impediments — which ''then'' provide a window for her and her team to wail on them. She herself can also be deceptively durable beyond her 250 health thanks to ''Cryo-Freeze'', which can save her from certain doom and/or buy precious seconds in stalling a fight or keeping on an objective.
* MinoredInAsskicking: Unlike most other heroes, she doesn't have the benefits of combat training or military hardware, but that doesn't make her any less badass.
* NiceGal: She is very kind and friendly.
* NighInvulnerability: While using ''Cryo-Freeze'', Mei is completely immune to damage, allowing her to weather entire Ultimates without an issue. Crouching behind an allied cryo-frozen Mei is an effective last-ditch strategy to survive D.Va's ''Self-Destruct'', assuming the mech landed on the opposite side.
* OffModel: Mei's waist has been somewhat infamous for being wonky when not covered by her normally thick clothing. The initial release of her "Luna"/"Chang'e" skins had [[ImpossibleHourglassFigure a tiny waist that made her butt seem disproportionately big]], though this was recognized as a model bug and quickly addressed. This popped up again with her "Pajamei" skin, where not only does her waist seem really tiny, [[https://i.imgur.com/trrDyco.png her back also tends to curve in an awkward position]].
* OlderThanTheyLook: Played straight twice over — not only does she look at least half a decade younger than her listed age of 31, but [[http://us.battle.net/forums/en/overwatch/topic/20751985037?page=2#post-30 her listed age doesn't include the nine years she spent in cryostasis,]] meaning that she's chronologically around ''40 years old''.
* OmnidisciplinaryScientist: Mei is mainly a climatologist, yet was able to use proper chemistry and engineering to build a fully functional FreezeRay out of spare parts lying around Ecopoint: Antarctica, and points out how Winston may have some wrong mathematical equations on his chalkboard in Watchpoint: Gibraltar.
* OnePersonBirthdayParty: [[http://i.imgur.com/fafiHDn.jpg This image]] heavily implies she had one while she was stuck in Antarctica.
* OutsideTheBoxTactic: Enterprising Mei players can use her ''Ice Wall'' to give themselves and their teammates a temporary platform, allowing characters with no special mobility options to access and attack from places they can't reach normally.
* PinkIsFeminine: Mei is a Chinese lady, complete with SilkHidingSteel. One of her beta skins, "Snow Plum", is pink with green accents.
* ThePollyanna:
** Mei's cheerful, friendly, and optimistic personality is offset by a dark and depressing backstory, as well as the CrapsaccharineWorld that she woke up to. This is best demonstrated in the map Ecopoint: Antarctica, where the notes found could qualify as an ApocalypticLog in any other game, except for the cute and cheerful doodles Mei made on most of them. When visiting the cryopods that her research team froze themselves in, you find a grim scene where all of the pods malfunctioned [[SoleSurvivor except one]]... and that's the one that has fuzzy Yeti slippers sitting right in front of it.
** This slowly starts to be subverted in later content, starting with the ''Rise and Shine'' short. In it, Mei is clearly traumatized by the deaths of her comrades and her fight to survive in the frozen Antarctic. Further, pre-match interactions with Winston and Moira show that the experience is a severe TraumaButton for Mei.
* PungeonMaster: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed.]] She likes to make puns on her name from time to time. Several of her quotes contain jokes relating to ice and cold as well.
* RecklessGunUsage: PlayedForLaughs. In one of her intros, she accidentally shoots an ''Ice Wall'' under herself while cleaning her blaster.
* RobotBuddy: A small drone named Snowball, which sits on her back and is used in her ultimate ability and some emotes.
* ScienceHero: She's a climatologist, and as shown by ''Rise and Shine'', she built the gear she uses in game.
* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: Her ''Endothermic Blaster'' (or "endothermic diffuser") is a relatively mild example, a title that's a few more syllables needed to say "FreezeRay"[[note]]"endothermic" literally means "heat-absorbing" and can often be interpreted as "heat-reducing"[[/note]]. Even in her journal, she notes she needs to "come up with a less science-y name."
* SheCleansUpNicely: She already looks pretty cute normally, but her "Chang'e" and "Luna" skins put her in a very fancy costume along with makeup and a more elaborate hairstyle, and the effect is spectacular.
* SkillGateCharacter: At lower levels, she is an extremely effective ambush character who can easily eliminate lone or closely grouped players, and thus is seen as extremely annoying to fight against. However, at higher levels, her weaknesses become more apparent, namely her short-range main attack, low damage per second, and ambush tactics being less effective against a closely coordinated team. Having said that, a veteran Mei who masters aiming with her icicles is still a menace and her Blizzard can be a devastating setup tool when timed properly.
* SlasherSmile: [[FreezeFrameBonus Hard to notice]], but Mei makes a distinctly ''sinister'' grin [[https://gfycat.com/AptShoddyHagfish just as she's about to kill someone]].
* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: She wears glasses and is a spectacular climatologist.
* SniperPistol: Her alternative fire creates and shoots an icicle at an enemy with pinpoint accuracy, though it takes a while to charge before it fires.
* SoleSurvivor: Of a team of climatologists sent to Antarctica to monitor recent changes in the Earth's climate.
* StatusInflictionAttack: Her primary fire and ultimate apply a stacking slow to all affected targets, freezing them after two seconds.
* StoneWall: Despite being classified as a "Damage" hero, Mei is mediocre at directly killing enemies and is more focused on instead impairing them through other means, mainly by creating literal walls and blizzards to block enemy engagement or catch them out, as well as stalling potential death thanks to her temporary invulnerability and self-healing. While her alternate fire ''can'' snipe out enemies, it's unwieldy to use without properly rendering enemies vulnerable first.
* TranquilFury: PlayedForLaughs with her New Years' resolution voice line, where she states that she'll do a better job controlling her temper. Aside from her pre-battle lines with Junkrat, we've rarely even seen Mei visibly ''annoyed'', let alone angry.
* TraumaButton: Mei's cheerful and upbeat personality becomes noticeably bruised whenever someone brings up the Antarctic, or even cryogenic freezing in general.
* UnorthodoxReload: Her ''Endothermic Blaster'' has a reservoir of coolant in the back that gradually empties as she depletes her ammunition, and a small canister of (presumably compressed) coolant on the side. Mei reloads by giving the canister a brief twist, pinkie adorably outstretched.
* WhoWearsShortShorts: Her "Honeydew" skin features cut off jeans that show off her thighs and legs.

Fareeha Amari, a girl born in modern Egypt, was born of a bloodline of warriors and soldiers. Honor and justice flow through her veins.\\
\\
As a child, she dreamed of following in her mother's footsteps, and did so, joining the Egyptian army. Her tactical genius and persistence caused her to rise through the officer ranks, earning the loyalty of all who served under her. She was set to join among Overwatch's ranks, but before she had the chance, Overwatch was disbanded.\\
\\
After leaving the army with a commendation for distinguished service, she was offered employment with Helix Security International, a private security firm contracted to defend the artificial intelligence research facility beneath the Giza Plateau. The top-secret facility was touted as vital to the safety of not only the region, but countries across the globe. Fareeha gladly accepted the choice assignment and received training in the Raptora Mark VI, an experimental combat suit designed for rapid mobility and devastating firepower.\\
\\
Under the call sign "Pharah," she works to safeguard the AI installation. Though she mourns Overwatch's passing, she still dreams of fighting the good fight and making a difference on a global scale.\\
\\
Pharah, as a damage character, blasts areas with suppressive fire and scatters foes apart from the air.

* '''Rocket Launcher''': Her primary weapon fires missiles that deal high area damage.
* '''Concussive Blast''': She fires a small rocket from her gauntlet that can knock enemies and herself away from the area it hits.
* '''Hover''': Allows Pharah to elevate and maneuver around the sky, using a fuel meter that recharges when not in use.
* '''Jump Jets''' lets her rapidly thrust herself upwards.
* '''Barrage''': With her ultimate, Pharah hovers in midair while firing a continuous salvo of mini-rockets from her suit, dealing heavy damage to enemies that remain within their area of explosion (Or herself if she's too close to the impacts).
----
* TwentyFourHourArmor: Up until the 2016 Winter update, Pharah has never been shown outside of her armor besides her head aside from a [[https://abload.de/img/ana_origin_03jvq29.jpg single picture of her as a child]], including her alternate skins and cosmetic sprays; this was particularly funny in the 2016 Summer update, which featured a spray showing her playing basketball in full armor. The 2016 Winter update finally shows Pharah completely out of her armor for the first time, with one of Pharah's sprays shows [[https://68.media.tumblr.com/4e81bef41a1571ad0b85c65c745b36ea/tumblr_oi5anv5nRS1vvs63uo1_540.jpg her going out fishing]], and she's also shown in casual clothes in the "Reflections" comic.
* AchillesHeel: Her playstyle is all about [[DeathFromAbove taking to the skies to deal damage]], but since she's not very fast (outside of extreme vertical bursts of motion from her ''Jump Jets'') and frequently out in the open without cover, heroes with instantaneous {{hitscan}} weapons without travel time, such as [[SniperPistol Cassidy]] or [[SniperRifle Widowmaker]], can take her out very easily, or at least force her into sub-optimal positions to avoid being shot down.
* ActionGirl: She's a woman who flies on a jet-pack and shoots rockets at her enemies. It probably helps that she is descended from a long line of warriors and soldiers.
* AnimalMotif:
** A bird of prey, based on her armor. Most likely a falcon in reference to [[Myth/EgyptianMythology the Egyptian God]] [[Characters/EgyptianMythology Horus]], who represented justice, righteous vengeance, and the [[MeaningfulName pharaoh]].
** Two of her skins, "Anubis" and "Jackal", have dog/wolf motifs, also likely to reference Anubis, the canine-headed god of funerals and death who [[{{Psychopomp}} ushered souls into the afterlife]], and Wepwawet, who was originally depicted as the god of warfare and hunting and was often described as a white or light gray wolf.
* AnimatedArmor: Her "Enchanted Armor" skin transforms her into a ghost, where she has no physical body to speak of. Just to emphasize this, her armor shatters to pieces like Bastion upon death.
* ApologeticAttacker: To [[PrecociousCrush Reinhardt]] if she takes him out. She sounds ''really'' sincere, too.
* ArmCannon: Her ''Concussive Blast'' works by firing a wrist-mounted rocket on her left arm.
* ArmorIsUseless: DownplayedTrope. Though it's done mainly for balance reasons, despite having the Raptora PoweredArmor, Pharah only has an average 200 hit points, excluding external armor and shields. It's standard for most non-tank heroes, but she's still less durable than Reaper and Mei despite them only wearing coats. Even if the armor's main purpose was to protect Pharah from G-Forces and sudden impacts from landing, there's no [[FallingDamage fall or crash damage]] in this game, anyway.
* BadassBoast:
** Her line when picked.
-->''"I will PROTECT the innocent."''
** When she uses her ultimate.
-->''"Justice rains from above!"''
* BadassFamily: Both Pharah and her mother Ana are battle-hardened playable heroes, with a long lineage of decorated soldiers in their bloodline.
* BareYourMidriff: Her "Lifeguard" skin shows off her toned stomach.
* BecomingTheCostume:
** When equipped with the "Thunderbird" or "Raindancer" skins, one of her respawn lines as "Raptora systems online" is replaced with "Thunderbird online."
** Similarly with her "Raptorion" and "Mechaqueen" skins, the line is replaced with "Raptorion systems online."
* BikerBabe: Courtesy of the [[Film/TopGun Aviator]] skin, added in Archives 2020, and complimented by an associated spray she got during the event.
* BloodKnight: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. In her comic, she notes that walking into unknown danger was always what her mother hated most. Pharah, on the other hand, says it's the part that she ''loves'' most. Beyond that, however, she's largely a {{consummate professional}}.
* BlownAcrossTheRoom: The primary purpose of her ''Concussive Blast''. It's useful for knocking opponents into pits, or knocking ''[[RocketJump herself]]'' across a distance.
* BraidsBeadsAndBuckskins: Her "Thunderbird"/"Raindancer" Legendary skins gives Pharah's armor a Native American theme, more specifically of Pacific Northwest cultures. When asked to confirm whether or not this was indicative of Pharah being half-First Nations, [[WordOfGod Jeff Kaplan]] stated "That’s what we’re driving towards. All the hints are there, so we’ll see." Michael Chu would later confirm that this is true, by stating that her father is the man she's having dinner with in the Revelations comic.
* ButNotTooForeign[=/=]TwoferTokenMinority: Pharah has a native Egyptian mother and a Canadian First Nation father.
* CanadaEh: Downplayed, since she doesn't appear to have spent much time there, despite being half-First Nations. The one time she's been depicted as visiting, there's (of course) a hockey game on.
* CharacterDevelopment: "Mission Statement" shows her turning from a by-the-book ConsummateProfessional who would prioritize a mission's fulfillment over the well-being of her team, to a celebrated protector and paragon of justice and compassion whose mere presence on the battlefield inspires hope in soldiers everywhere.
* CivvieSpandex: Pharah's "Aviator" skin has her in a fairly casual outfit (white shirt, leather jacket, and jeans) with her Raptora jetpack atop, and the look ends up being canonized in "New Blood". When she, Ana, and Cassidy are ambushed by Talon, she quickly slaps on her jetpack and helmet to blast some mooks apart, [[MadeOfIron and it's enough for her to tank a direct hit from an enemy rocket]].
* CoolHelmet: All her helmets have elaborate designs.
* ConsummateProfessional: In ''Mission Statement'', Pharah emphasized the larger mission over assisting the injured. She reasoned that more lives would be endangered if the team didn't act quickly.
* DeadpanSnarker: Every now and then.
-->'''Pharah:''' Saleh? You alive?\\
'''Saleh:''' ...No...\\
'''Pharah:''' [[SnarkToSnarkCombat Oh. Guess I'm not buying dinner.]]
* DeathFromAbove: Her kit in general emphasizes aerial combat, with tools to bombard the enemy with rockets from the sky for as long as possible, including her ultimate, where she'll stay afloat in one spot as she rains down missiles, though savvy opponents can take advantage of this to shoot her down. One of her quotes even has her naming this trope verbatim.
* {{Fangirl}}: Pharah comes across as this when interacting with the former Overwatch agents, her childhood idols.
* {{Fanservice}}: Her armored outfits doesn't show her skin obviously but starting with her "Lifeguard" skin shows off her toned stomach and nice legs.
* FlyingFirepower: She uses her jetpack to deliver rocket justice from the skies.
* FollowInMyFootsteps: Subverted. Due to growing up with Overwatch's heroes as a child, Pharah wanted to become an Overwatch agent, but Ana disagreed with it because it meant she'd experience the same horrors that she felt.
* FourGods: The Year of the Dog Chinese New Year event turns her into Qīnglóng, the Azure Dragon. There is a stylized glowing blue dragon on her chest.
* FragileSpeedster: She has great mobility and can take advantage of the third dimension to attack from almost any angle, but she still has only 200 HP, meaning that all it takes is one or two hits from an enemy with high burst damage to pluck her out of the sky.
* GunTwirling: Does a ''very'' fancy and formal variation of military rifle spinning as an emote.
* HeroWorshipper: She idolized Overwatch in her youth and wanted nothing more than to join and fight alongside them. In particular, she idolized her mother (fighting alongside whom was her lifelong dream) and also Reinhardt, whom she most closely emulates as TheParagon.
* HavingABlast: Almost all of her abilities fire off a rocket. Of justice!
* HeroicLineage: Her family was full of military heroes and warriors. Her mother in particular was one of the original members and founders of Overwatch, and one of the best snipers in the world. Word is still out on what military background, if any, her Canadian father has.
* HiddenBuxom: All of Pharah's skins have her wearing power armor, but her Aviator skin shows she's actually pretty stacked.
* HiddenDepths:
** Pharah knew all along that her mother was buckling under various pressures during her time in Overwatch. Her callousness during ''Mission Statement'' could be interpreted as her trying to protect herself so that she doesn't become a ShellShockedVeteran like Ana. Also, while she's still fairly polite to the younger members of Overwatch who idolize her mother (such as Winston and Mercy), she reserves some burning comments for Morrison.
** According to an [[WordofGod AMA with Michael Chu]], she's also a fan of classic rock music, which carries over into her AirGuitar [[NotSoAboveItAll dance emote.]] It's worth noting that, at [[TwentyMinutesIntoTheFuture the time the game takes place]], most of the genre would be over or approaching ''a century old.'' No wonder she gets along with [[DiscoDan Reinhardt.]]
* HopeBringer: After "Mission Statement", she gains her celebrated reputation as a KnightInShiningArmor inspiring hope in soldiers on the battlefield.
* ICouldaBeenAContender: Downplayed, because she is obviously far from past her prime and has a fulfilling career of her own, but Pharah greatly admired Overwatch and initially wanted to join before it collapsed. She never got her chance due to [[MamaBear Ana's]] insistence. Nowadays, she works with Helix Security International, and some of her dialogue suggests she's still a bit wistful about her missed opportunity, such as when she tells Tracer that the latter was lucky to be a part of the organization. Tracer responds that Pharah [[OrderReborn may yet get another chance.]]
* InstrumentalWeapon: Her Anniversary emote has her use her rocket launcher as a guitar.
* JumpJetPack: Like Winston, Pharah has this ability to help her get to high ledges, named ''Jump Jet''. Unlike him, she can also use it to [[NotQuiteFlight hover in mid-air]].
* KilledMidSentence: A running meme with Pharah's ultimate. Because her ultimate causes her to hover in place in the air, it makes Pharah an easier target than normal, leading to many cases of being killed while shouting her ultimate's line.
-->''"Justice rains from a-AUGH!"''
* TheKnightsWhoSaySquee:
** If she witnesses Reinhardt (her childhood icon) get a kill, she'll cheer him on.
-->"Reinhardt, you've still got it!"
** She'll also tell her mother that fighting by her side has always been her lifelong dream.
** She also sounds pretty enthusiastic when asking who taught Cassidy how to shoot.
* {{Knockback}}: Her ''Concussive Blast'' knocks enemies back horizontally from the center of the explosion, which does no damage outright, but is good for knocking them into pits or out of position, or boosting herself for horizontal distance. Her rockets also do a little bit of knockback as well, but this was nerfed in a later patch. Before the nerf, any splash damage also did a little bit of knockback, but after the nerf, the rockets have to be more or less a direct hit.
* TheLancer: She was originally the second in command to her team in ''Mission Statement'', with Captain Khalil as the leader [[spoiler:before being killed in action, and [[FieldPromotion promoting Pharah to lead the mission]]]].
* LikeMotherLikeDaughter: Originally, she wanted to be like her mother, who was an Overwatch agent and a hero, partly out of being a HeroWorshipper (helped by growing up with members of the original strike team) and partly to fill in expectations to follow after Ana, whom almost everyone idolized. However, if her pre-match dialogue with former Overwatch personnel such as Winston and Soldier: 76 is to go by, part of her wanted to salvage some sort of connection with her mother, who due to her line of work was probably not there for her as often as both would've liked. She later discovered that Ana actually ''opposed'' her goal of joining Overwatch and that Ana's career was giving her tremendous pressure in the forms of guilt and PTSD, something that Pharah came to understand on a personal level after serving in the Egyptian military.
** This is also used as a voiceline by two other characters: Ana to complement Pharah on getting a kill ''and Widowmaker when she kills Pharah.''
* LogicalWeakness: Pharah's greatest strength is her ability to fly above the battlefield and rain down DeathFromAbove safely outside the range of the majority of the game's characters, but this positioning also makes her a prime target for snipers.
* MacrossMissileMassacre: Her ultimate ability, ''Barrage'', has her fire a salvo of missiles at her foes.
* MeaningfulName: Her call sign "Pharah", which sounds like "Pharaoh."
* MilitaryBrat: Daughter of one of Overwatch's founding members. Her straight-laced demeanor and somewhat non-egyptian interests, such as classical rock and basketball, and notable lack of an accent and any BilingualBonus lines point towards someone who grew up on an international military base rather than her home country.
* MilitarySalute: She salutes in her hero selection preview and her "Hello" voice command. Both have her [[ArtisticLicenseMilitary using her left hand]], even though she should be able to use her right (though to be fair, her right hand is currently holding her helmet or rocket launcher).
* MilitarySuperhero: She used to be a respected officer in the Egyptian army.
* MissedTheCall: Was well on her way to finally joining the Overwatch team when the organization was disbanded.
* MissingMom: Ana Amari's backstory trailer reveals that she's been presumed dead for nearly a decade, which likely plays into Pharah's issues.
* MommyIssues: Her in-game dialogue hints at some bitter feelings toward her mother. That said, her comic shows that she refers to her mother's old advice for comfort in trying times.
* NotSoAboveItAll:
** Her laughing emote has her lose her usual hardened, professional poise and burst into a hysterical fit. Then, she abruptly stops as if realizing how this looks, and quickly returns to her normal posture.
** Her dance emote: Using her rocket launcher as a guitar, complete with actual guitar sounds, and firing off shoulder rockets like stage fireworks.
* PoweredArmor: Wears the Raptora Mark VI combat suit, which allows her to fly and devastate her foes with lots and lots of rockets.
* PrecociousCrush: {{Implied|Trope}} during pre-battle banter when she nervously tells Reinhardt that she used to have a poster of him on her wall. Reinhardt gleefully says that he remembers seeing it and that his hair looked amazing. Note that Reinhardt is almost ''thirty years'' her senior. Also, see ApologeticAttacker above.
* RefusalOfTheCall: "New Blood" reveals that while she wasn't directly picked up by Winston's message to rejoin Overwatch, Tracer, Reinhardt, and Brigitte all reached out to her in an attempt to have her come along. She initially refused due to her commitment to protecting Egypt with Helix, as well as [[BrokenPedestal her own personal disillusionment in the organization]]. It takes an in-person reunion with Cassidy and her seemingly long-dead mother, Ana -- giving her the encouragement she needs to follow her dreams of fighting for Overwatch -- for her to consider changing her mind.
* RocketJump:
** A variation: her JetPack is far more useful than her rockets for gaining height, but using her ''Concussive Blast'' on herself is her best option for a quick burst of ''horizontal'' speed.
** One of her purchasable voice lines also [[DiscussedTrope references this trope]]:
-->'''Pharah:''' [[LampshadeHanging "Rocket jump"? That sounds dangerous.]]
* SkillGateCharacter: Pharah is relatively easy-to-use character, and her focus on aerial combat can dismantle an enemy team from the relative safety of the air in low-level play, where players are likely to have a harder time shooting her down, especially if she has a Mercy to fly alongside her. However, counting on the poor aim of your enemies becomes increasingly unreliable in higher levels of play, and being in the open air can become a major weakness against enemies who can easily shoot you down. She can be played in higher ranks if she has a team that can divert focus or keep her alive, but it requires some very good game-sense and coordination to properly pull off, and especially requires you to consistently hit with your rockets to be successful.
* StatuesqueStunner: She's almost six feet tall and is quite beautiful.
* StepfordSmiler: It's implied that her desire to join Overwatch was more of a way to manage the expectations of others, who idolized Ana. In truth, she knew that her mother was struggling with personal demons during her stint in Overwatch, and that her mother did ''not'' want her to follow in her footsteps.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: She looks a lot like her mother back in her prime, with the only difference being their hairstyles.
* ThisMeansWarpaint: Her "Thunderbird" and "Raindancer" skins include red and white, and turquoise and white face paint respectively.
* ThreePointLanding: Does this in one of her highlight intros, complete with GroundPunch.
* VocalEvolution: Over time throughout the beta, her voice was adjusted to sound much deeper than when she was first introduced.
* WhatTheHellHero:
** In "Mission Statement", Pharah receives one from her captain when she leaves an injured civilian to die in favor of fulfilling a mission, who tells her that in order to have her team's loyalty, she must lead by example.
** After Ana was released and more of Pharah's backstory was revealed, [[HarsherInHindsight suddenly Pharah's pre-match dialogue with Soldier: 76 became much harsher and more bitter in tone]].
---> '''Soldier: 76:''' Your mother would've been proud of you.
---> '''Pharah:''' You didn't know my mother very well, then.
* WhatTheHellIsThatAccent: Pharah's accent has been noted for sounding odd. Jen Cohn is clearly attempting an accent, but it doesn't sound Egyptian, nor does it sound American, it just sounds weird. A common FanWank is that it's some kind of mix as a result of her traveling, operating, and interacting with people from all across the world from a young age.

* BecomingTheCostume:
* BerserkButton:
* DroneDeployer: His ultimate is a remote-controlled, self-propelled bomb.
* HiddenDepths:
* HoistByHisOwnPetard:
* MeaningfulName:
* OhCrap:
** In the comic short "Going Legit", he plans to invade a warehouse by blowing a hole through the roof and going from there... only to realize after jumping in that it's a ''long'' way down.
---> '''Junkrat''': I'm coming for ya, you scrap-headed—! ...''Oh-there's-no-top-floor-you-sons-of''...
-->''"Ah! [[LampshadeHanging Aiming's overrated!]]"''

* AbnormalAmmo:
* BecomingTheCostume:
* DissonantSerenity:
* ThePollyanna:

* AnimalMotif:
* BadassBoast:
** Her line when picked.
-->''"I will PROTECT the innocent."''
** When she uses her ultimate.
-->''"Justice rains from above!"''
* BadassFamily: Both Pharah and her mother Ana are battle-hardened playable heroes, with a long lineage of decorated soldiers in their bloodline.
* BareYourMidriff: Her "Lifeguard" skin shows off her toned stomach.
* BecomingTheCostume:
-->'''Pharah:''' Saleh? You alive?\\
* HiddenDepths:
-->''"Justice rains from a-AUGH!"''
* TheKnightsWhoSaySquee:
** If she witnesses Reinhardt (her childhood icon) get a kill, she'll cheer him on.
-->"Reinhardt, you've still got it!"
* NotSoAboveItAll:
* RocketJump:
* WhatTheHellHero:

* CivvieSpandex: Pharah's "Aviator" skin has her in a fairly casual outfit (white shirt, leather jacket, and jeans) with her Raptora jetpack atop, and the look ends up being canonized in "New Blood". [=McCree=] can both apply pressure from afar and burst down squishy enemies at close quarters.

* '''Fan the Hammer''' his secondary fire which quickly unloads all of his remaining ammo, dealing extremely high damage when used at close range.
* '''Combat Roll''' Lets him evade danger while simultaneously reloading his revolver.
* '''Flashbang''', a blinding grenade that stuns nearby enemies when it explodes and slows them down little, to deal with pesky flankers or stop approaching foes.

[=McCree=] can both apply pressure from afar Mei uses her cryogenic technology in battle to impair and burst down squishy enemies at close quarters.restrict her foes' ability to move.

caught within.

* AchillesHeel: Barriers like Reinhard's and Orisa's shields can stop [=McCree=] in his tracks. His revolver's slow fire rate prevents him from just knocking them down in a hurry and he lacks the mobility of other Offense heroes like Tracer and Genji, meaning that it's difficult for him to simply walk around it without putting himself in a precarious situation.
* TheAlcoholic: [=McCree=] has had several moments which paint him as loving the bottle. In ''Junkenstein's Revenge'', he has a chance to ask Hanzo to pass his flask around for a drink. In the tavern of Eichenwalde, he'll wonder if the taps still work and complain about a powerful thirst. In the "Reflections" webcomic, he's shown passed out in a bar. He also says that Hanzo's sake isn't bad, but he prefers a little "bite" to his liquor.
* AlliterativeName: His real name, '''C'''ole '''C'''assidy.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: In spite of his Irish name, his actual ethnicity has not (yet) been discussed by developers. He's tan-skinned, dark-haired, dark-eyed as well as speaks Spanish in his comic and comes from an area with a large Latino population, so some fans have speculated that he's at least part Latino. He's also been theorized to have Native American heritage due to his facial features. Some speculate that he's simply Caucasian with a tan.
%% * AmericansAreCowboys: He's from Texas, and is a stereotypical cowboy in a futuristic settings.
* AntiHero: A former outlaw, and now fights the good fight.
** Further elaborated upon in the ''Reunion'' animation: Sure, ''he's'' left his life of crime behind him, but his old friends haven't, and he implies that he's the one who sent them the hot tip about the train they could heist, and states outright that as long as they give him the crate the train was transporting, the Deadlock Gang are free to claim the rest. Ergo, he not only didn't have anything against setting up a criminal heist in order to get what he wanted, as long as ''he'' wasn't the one carrying out the heist itself, but he was also perfectly content with letting a gang of outlaws get away with their heist.
* ArtificialLimbs: Like Symmetra, the design of [=McCree=]'s left arm seems to suggest that it's a cybernetic replacement. [[https://d1u1mce87gyfbn.cloudfront.net/media/reference/mccree_reference.pdf Confirmed by this cosplay reference guide.]] His Blackwatch skin shows that it's relatively recent and couldn't have had it more than at most seven years, as he still had his original arm during his Blackwatch days and the London Uprising.
-->'''Torbjörn''': [=McCree=], what happened to your arm?\\
'''[=McCree=]''': [[DeadpanSnarker Always admired yours. Figured I'd get one of my own.]]
** One of the threats Ashe shouts at [=McCree=] near the end of the ''Reunion'' cinematic implies that it was her robot butler, [=B.O.B.=], who removed his original arm. Deconfirmed by WordOfGod; Michael Chu stating that "[[FriendlyEnemy [=McCree=] and [=B.O.B.=] get along just fine.]]"
* AwesomeAnachronisticApparel:
** His outfit fits in better in the Old West, and is without a doubt awesome.
** His Mystery Man skin updates him slightly... To a 1930s {{Pulp}} hero. Still anachronistic, still awesome.
* TheAtoner: Seeks to make up for his past crimes as a weapons trafficker by becoming a hero and righting all the injustices he's able to.
* BadassBandolier: Wears a bandolier of bullets on his belt.
* BadassBaritone: He speaks with a deep voice that wouldn't be out of place in a SpaghettiWestern.
* BadassBeard: He has a combination of a beard and sideburns, and is a BadassNormal. The only thing that's missing would be a BadassMustache. When he was younger and Overwatch was still operating, he had a small, simple goatee.
* BadassBoast: When on fire:
-->''"(chuckles) You best head for the hills, I'm on fire!"''
* BadassCape: A variation; he wears a red serape, just like [[Film/AFistfulOfDollars The Man with No Name]]. He's also a BadassNormal.
* BadassLongCoat: When equipped with the "Gambler" and "Riverboat" skins.
* BadassMustache: In his "Gambler" and "Riverboat" skins.
* BadassNormal: Far more than anyone else. While other {{Badass Normal}}s use advanced technology to keep up with everyone else, his flashbang and revolver seem rather mundane, even by today's standards, with the only sign of advanced technology perhaps being his left arm, which he only uses to reload, [[MoreDakka fan-fire]], and melee anyway. Other than that, he's just a guy with a gun and ''really'' good aim. Even his ultimate doesn't involve any gadget and is just him focusing on his next shots.

to:

* AchillesHeel: Barriers like Reinhard's AbnormalAmmo:
** Rather than wielding a traditional firearm to shoot bullets or [[EnergyWeapon some kind of energy]], Mei opts for a FreezeRay powered by some kind of icy coolant (''Rise
and Orisa's shields can stop [=McCree=] in his tracks. His revolver's slow fire rate prevents him from just knocking them down in a hurry Shine'' shows her MacGyvering the chemical mixture herself, and he lacks the mobility of other Offense heroes like Tracer and Genji, meaning that it's difficult for him to simply walk around even she's surprised at how effective it without putting himself in a precarious situation.
* TheAlcoholic: [=McCree=] has had several moments

In the tavern only survivor of Eichenwalde, he'll wonder if the taps her team of climatologists and doesn't really have any non-academic training. word out.
* AlliterativeName: His real name, '''C'''ole '''C'''assidy.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: In spite of his Irish name, his actual ethnicity has not (yet) been discussed by developers. He's tan-skinned, dark-haired, dark-eyed as well as speaks Spanish in his comic and comes from an area with
AmmunitionBackpack: Carries a large Latino population, so some fans have speculated that he's at least part Latino. He's also been theorized to have Native American heritage due to his facial features. Some speculate that he's simply Caucasian transparent canister, presumably filled with a tan.

[[https://d1u1mce87gyfbn.cloudfront.net/media/reference/mccree_reference.pdf Confirmed by this cosplay reference guide.]] His Blackwatch skin

to correct ''[[OmnidisciplinaryScientist Winston's]]'' calculations on occasion.
* BadassBandolier: Wears a bandolier ApologeticAttacker: Some of bullets on his belt.
* BadassBaritone: He speaks with
her lines after a deep voice that wouldn't be out of place in a SpaghettiWestern.
* BadassBeard: He has a combination of a beard and sideburns, and is a BadassNormal. The only thing that's missing would be a BadassMustache. When he was younger and Overwatch was still operating, he had a small, simple goatee.
* BadassBoast: When on fire:

* BadassCape: A variation; he wears BadassAdorable: Cute as a red serape, just like [[Film/AFistfulOfDollars The Man button, and armed with No Name]]. He's also a BadassNormal.
* BadassLongCoat: When equipped with

hell out of you.
* BadassMustache: In his "Gambler" and "Riverboat" skins.
BadassBookworm: She's an excellent climatologist who uses her technology to fight alongside the other heroes.
* BadassNormal: Far more than anyone else. While surrounded by super-soldiers, cyborgs, assassins, robots, and power armored warriors, Mei is a scientist with no known combat training, genetic tampering, or cybernetics. Yet in-game she fights right alongside them with no problem, and in her story she presses on despite massive loss and stacked odds.
* BarrierWarrior: Mei can place ''Ice Walls'' to act as barriers, and unlike
other {{Badass Normal}}s use advanced technology barriers in the game, these ones are physical impediments. This means that in addition to keep up with everyone else, his flashbang blocking incoming attacks, they can physically divide and revolver seem rather mundane, even by today's standards, with separate the only sign of advanced technology perhaps being his left arm, which he only uses to reload, [[MoreDakka fan-fire]], enemy team (and potentially [[MutualDisadvantage your own]]), and melee anyway. Other than that, he's just completely block line of sight for certain abilities.
* BayonetYa: Her Endothermic Blaster has
a guy with a gun bayonet attached to it in her Yeti Hunter and ''really'' good aim. Even his ultimate doesn't involve any gadget and Abominable skins, although it is just him focusing on his next shots.simply [[OrnamentalWeapon ornamental]].

** His "Gambler" and "Riverboat" skins give him a few [[TheGambler gambling]] references, such as "Not time to fold'em yet" while respawning, and "Jackpot!" after a multikill.
** His "Vigilante" and "Mystery Man" skins give him a few [[ShoutOut shout-outs]] to famous [[PulpMagazine Pulp]] hero ''Radio/TheShadow'', including "I know the evil that lurks in the hearts of men. [=McCree=] always knows."
** Subverted with his "Van Helsing" skin. The line "It's high [[LastSecondWordSwap moon...]]" was added to the game's files in the same patch as the skin, but there doesn't seem to be any way to trigger it.
** His "Lifeguard" skin also gives him a few additional lines, including saying "No running!" when using a ''Flashbang'', and changing his ultimate callout to "It's high tide..."
* BilingualBonus: His "Magistrate" skin features a belt buckle that reads "갓크리", which when transliterated from Korean, reads as "[[BadassBoast God-Cree]]".
* BlindedByTheLight: His ''Flashbang'' ability momentarily stuns its target with... well, [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin a flash and a bang]].
* BookDumb: Gets accused of being uncultured by Moira in Retribution, and he answered that he's been to the Cave of Mystery [[note]]attackers' second spawn point on Route 66, which seems to be a local attraction of sorts[[/note]], the French version has him answer that he somtimes reads books without pictures, but he might just be trolling her.
* BornInTheWrongCentury: [[BadassNormal While he's still a formidable gunslinger]], his cowboy archetype seems rather perplexing in 2076. It's unclear as to exactly how out-of-place it is in-universe (cowboys do still exist in the Southern U.S., and it's not impossible that he's descended from genuine vaqueros), but this exchange seems to imply it's at least a little odd:
-->'''[=McCree=]:''' I bet you're a big fan of those old-fashioned cowboy movies, aren't you?\\
'''Soldier: 76:''' I thought I was... until I met you.
* BottomlessMagazines: Zig-zagged. While ''Deadeye'' still costs ammo to use, it lets [=McCree=] shoot at however many targets he has acquired in his field of view. If there are more than 6 painted targets, or just more enemies than he has ammo for in his Peacekeeper, [=McCree=] would keep shooting even if his cylinder is empty.
* BountyHunter: This is what he ends up becoming after Overwatch's collapse. Also counts as PiratesWhoDontDoAnything, as he's never seen capturing anyone in media released thus far.
* BoxedCrook: When he was busted by Overwatch, he was given the choice to go to prison, or work for them. Naturally, he took the latter. Since he was able to resign later, he probably kept working with Overwatch even after earning his freedom.
* TheCameo: He makes an appearance in the "A Moment In Crime Special Report" trailer, where he can be seen looking at Junkrat and Roadhog's wanted posters.
* CameraAbuse: One of his highlight intros involves firing at the camera and leaving bullet holes.
* TheCharmer: [=McCree=] tends to be very gentlemanly and flirtatious towards women. Ana even calls him a charmer in in-game dialogue.
* CigarChomper: He's always seen carrying a lit cigar in his mouth, another reference to Clint Eastwood's Man with No Name.
* ClintSquint: His default expression. It rarely changes into anything else.
* CoatHatMask: His "Mystery Man" gives him a mask, a hat different from his usual cowboy one and a BadassCape instead of a BadassLongCoat.
* CoupDeGrace: His ''Flashbang'' stuns the enemy for approximately 0.7 seconds, which downplays the trope as it's such a short duration. But that duration is enough to get a headshot (which, considering his Peacekeeper's high base damage, is utterly massive) or unload his entire cylinder using ''Fan the Hammer.''
* CovertGroup: Was a former member of Blackwatch, a clandestine offshoot of Overwatch.
* DeadpanSnarker: To fit his SpaghettiWestern motif, he's by far the snarkiest of all the playable characters and doesn't seem to take any of his foes all that seriously.
* DefectorFromDecadence: When Overwatch fell to internal corruption and Blackwatch sought to control the organization for its own ends, [=McCree=] promptly resigned in disgust. He still carries the symbol of his old organization on his hat.
* DifficultButAwesome:
** [=McCree=] is perhaps more reliant on good aim than any other damage-based hero short of Widowmaker and Hanzo. Due to his weapon's slow fire rate and pinpoint accuracy, he cannot simply spray at his target's general vicinity to hit them, unlike fellow Offense heroes Tracer and Soldier: 76. Thus, he has to aim his shots carefully to get any value out of his incredible damage output outside of the occasional Flashbang + Fan the Hammer combo.
** ''Deadeye'' requires one to be a master of timing and practicing good judgement. When activated, it makes him move extremely slowly and prevents him from firing until he cancels or unleashes it, which essentially turns him into an easy target if used at the wrong time or if a lucky enemy gets the drop on him. This is not helped by the fact that he has to maintain a direct line of sight to his enemies ''after'' making his presence known by calling "IT'S HIGH NOON!" (which means they can find him just by looking in his general direction), ''and'' he glows during the process to make finding him substantially easier than usual. Finally, the bullets can still be blocked by shields and cover, or worse, [[HoistByHisOwnPetard deflected back at him]] by Genji. But, when used at just the proper moment, a perfectly timed ''Deadeye'' can turn the tide of a fight. When fully charged, it has the capability to take out large groups of enemies at once and even win games all by itself.
* DominoMask: Part of his "Mystery Man" skin, giving him the look of an old-time robber.
* DramaticWind: If there is enough room for it to spawn, a tumbleweed appears when using his Ultimate.
-->'''Echo''': ''(watching [=McCree=] get a kill with Deadeye)'' [[LampshadeHanging Where did that tumbleweed come from?]]
* EveryoneHasStandards: This is a man who was a former arms dealer in a [[NewOldWest futuristic gang]], and whatever Blackwatch got up to apparently sickened even him. Given that Blackwatch was led by [[spoiler:the man that would become Reaper, this has... implications]].
* EyeObscuringHat: Normally it doesn't affect gameplay, but it does dip into the top of his vision during his ultimate.
* FarmBoy: It's implied in one dialogue with Ashe that he spent at least a part of his youth on a farm of some kind, and seems to look at that time with a degree of fondness.
* FlareGun: His Lifeguard skin replaces his revolver with a "Desert [[{{Pun}} Seagull]]" flare gun, although for gameplay purposes, it functions identically to his normal revolver.
* FiringOneHanded: Normally does this, though he will use the other to fan the revolver.
* FunWithAcronyms: His belt buckle has the word "BAMF" (AKA, "Badass Motherfucker") on it. In his Scrooge skin, it instead reads GAMF (presumably "Greedy/Grumpy Ass Motherfucker"). As for his Lifeguard skin, it's SAMF. Word is still out on what precisely it could mean: Sexy, Salty, Safe, Swimming, or any other S word associated with a WalkingShirtlessScene who saves people's lives in the water. His Undead skin changes to "DAMF" ("Dead-Ass Motherfucker").
* FurAgainstFang: Van Helsing has always been seen as the ArchEnemy to Literature/{{Dracula}}, but [=McCree's=] "Van Helsing" skin also gains hints of [[OurWerewolvesAreDifferent lycanthropy]] (namely a glowing arm which supposedly resulted from a werewolf biting "The Gunslinger") to evoke this trope on top of it.
* TheGambler: [=McCree=] has an unlockable skin called Gambler that gives him a 19th century-style suit, a neatly-groomed mustache, an Ace up his sleeve, and a revolver adorned with playing card suites. He also has a belt buckle that says "Hold 'Em" (a reference to the Music/KennyRogers song "The Gambler").
* GlassCannon: His shots, Flashbang ability, and Deadeye (especially) can deal huge amounts of damage to his enemies in a very short time if accurate. However, other than Combat Roll and the short stun effect of his Flashbang, he has no tools to defend his mere 200 Health pool.
* GoodFeelsGood: This seems to have been a factor in his reform, in that he enjoyed helping people while a BoxedCrook far more than he ever enjoyed being a villain. It may have also been a factor in his eventual departure from Blackwatch, as they went in the other direction.
* GunAccessories: He has a laser sight on his revolver in his Blackwatch outfit.
* GunTwirling: Does this in his idle animation, when reloading, and in at least two of his taunts.
* TheGunslinger: This guy's got a six-shooter, and he knows how to use it.
* HandCannon: His revolver is pretty damn huge, and 2 or 3 well-aimed shots can kill any non-tank hero.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: "Train Hopper" shows that [=McCree=] is not liked by the law following Overwatch's disbandment. His mere presence on a train leads authorities to assume that he's hijacked it — even when the truth of the matter is that he took down a squad of mercenaries (implied to be Blackwatch or Talon) who would have killed everyone on the train if not for his interference.
* HitmanWithAHeart: Although his services are greatly sought after by all sides, he refuses to fight for causes he does not think are just.
* {{Homage}}: Being a gunslinger with a stubbly face, perpetual ClintSquint, and a poncho, he's an obvious homage to Creator/ClintEastwood's "Man With No Name" persona.
* {{Hunk}}: Ruggedly handsome, and his ''Lifeguard'' skin shows him to be pretty cut as well.
* HypocriticalHumor: Despite initially wanting to kill Antonio in the ''Retribution'' comic, almost all his dialogue with Reyes in the event proper is anger at his commander [[spoiler:killing Antonio instead of capturing him]]. Although further dialogues make it clear that he's not angry at Reyes for [[spoiler:killing him]] as much as [[spoiler:[[SoMuchForStealth doing so loudly]], going against the plan, and putting all of them in danger]].
* ImprobableAge: Given that [[http://i.imgur.com/FAGyx4z.jpg this picture was taken]] 20 years before the game, [=McCree=] was 17 at most when he was recruited into Blackwatch and ''even younger'' when he founded the Deadlocks and became a notorious criminal.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: His ''Deadeye'' ability shows how good he is at aiming. He can make fatal headshots with deadly precision, but [[BadassNormal without any sort of assistance whatsoever]]. While Soldier: 76 has his Tactical Visor assisting him, and Widowmaker had her heart rate slowed down to make precision shots, [=McCree=] has just his natural skill and talent.
* InstantDeathRadius: The typical and often most reliable way for [=McCree=] to kill someone is a ''Flashbang'' to the face followed by him fanning the hammer point-blank into them (or a couple shots to the head). After which he'll be walking on his way while the victim is waiting in spawn.
* KineticWeaponsAreJustBetter: In a universe with abundant energy weapons, his revolver stands out for sheer damage potential. This even works into his ultimate. "Deadeye" was reworked in 2017 so that the longer he keeps his draw on a target, the more damage it'll do when he fires. Given enough time and maybe the help of a nanoboost, he can one-shot every character in the game.[[note]]It used to take 0.8 seconds to lock on to your targets, and then did a set amount of damage, enough to kill all but full-health Tank classes. Now it takes 0.2 seconds to lock on and does more damage the longer you wait, with an indicator of when it's a kill.[[/note]]
* KnightErrant: The wandering gunslinger variant.
* KnightInSourArmor: He has a taciturn demeanor and is always frowning. But [[AllThereInTheManual the lore indicates]] he'd always do the right thing.
* LastNameBasis: He goes solely by his surname. He and Ashe are the only characters billed by surname.
* LeadTheTarget: A very slight, solely cosmetic example; most heroes' weapons slightly drag behind, overshoot, or wobble with the camera as it turns around, but [=McCree=] is skilled-enough of a gunslinger [[https://youtu.be/1xeTMCPG2gg?t=692 that he leads his turns with his revolver,]] making him able to aim where he wants to shoot before he himself has finished turning to it.
* MoreDakka: Unusually for a videogame revolver (the move is more often seen in movies), he's capable of this by fanning the hammer of his revolver. You can also follow up with a ''Combat Roll'' to instantly reload and unleash ''another'' barrage.
* MrFanservice: If he wasn't considered good-looking already, his Lifeguard skin shows off his physique.
* MundaneUtility: Some very skilled [=McCree=] players will go into ''Deadeye'' and exit immediately just for a quick refill of their gun in the midst of a fight.
* NecessaryDrawback: Fanning the hammer may allow [=McCree=] to quickly dump the rest of the cylinder into a target in front of him, but it has multiple drawbacks. First, accuracy goes right out the window compared to firing the revolver normally. Next, each shot fired by fanning the hammer does '''less''' damage than a shot fired normally [[note]]45 damage for fanned vs 70 damage for normal[[/note]]. Finally, shots fired by fanning the hammer do not benefit from a headshot bonus.
* NiceHat: Wears a brown Stetson hat with a wide brim, which is an essential accessory for any self-respecting cowboy.
* NoodleIncident:
** There was one thing that Reyes did during his time with Blackwatch that disgusted [=McCree=], though we don't know what it is yet.
** We don't know how he lost his left arm. He still has his original arm in the ''Uprising'' comic, which takes place seven years prior to the events of the game.
* NoticeThis: When an enemy [=McCree=] performs ''Deadeye'', he will give off an orange glow to make him more noticeable. [[AntiFrustrationFeatures This is not a bad thing]], as a [=McCree=] who's less visible and thus gives virtually no chance for counterplay would be ''very'' frustrating.
* OffhandBackhand: A variation in the "Reunion" animated short: he blasts a Deadlock sniper lining up a shot on him without looking while taking cover behind a boulder.
* OrnamentalWeapon: His Van Helsing costume has a crossbow slung on his back, but he doesn't use it.
* OneHitKill: His ''Deadeye'' ultimate will instantly kill enemies that it fully charges on. The catch is that targets with higher HP take longer to charge upon [[note]]it charges at a rate of 200HP per second; Roadhog at full health, for example, would take 3 whole seconds to lock onto[[/note]], but once the red skull icon appears, hitting left click gives the target an express ticket back to spawn.
* OohMeAccentsSlipping: PlayedForLaughs in ''Retribution''; [=McCree=] had previously spent a few days in Venice undercover as a waiter, attempting to speak with the appropriate accent instead of his Southern drawl. It's about as convincing as Brad Pitt's Italian accent in ''Film/InglouriousBasterds''.
-->'''[=McCree=]''': I watched a bunch of old {{Spaghetti Western}}s, I thought it was pretty good! "Bonah serah, sinyora. Can I-ah get’chu-ah somethin' to drink?"\\
'''Moira''': Please, never do that again.
* OurWerewolvesAreDifferent: His "Van Helsing" skin gives him a glowing left arm. Per his scary story at the Halloween party in the ''Junkenstein'' comic, a werewolf bit him right before he could kill it with a silver bullet.
* {{Outlaw}}: He was one of the founders of the notorious Deadlock Gang, but is trying to redeem himself nowadays despite his reputation.
* PerpetualFrowner: Is always seen with a permanent frown, a ClintSquint, and a smoking cigar in his mouth, like any gunslinging hero. He does smile in his "Hat Tip" and "Joker" emotes.
* PreAsskickingOneLiner: When he uses his ultimate.
--> ''"It's high noon..."''
* PrettyBoy: If [[http://images.eurogamer.net/2015/articles/1/8/4/2/9/2/8/146833431131.jpg this picture]] is accurate, he was one when he was younger. Now he's just ruggedly handsome.
* PunnyName: A twofold one with his real name, Cole Cassidy. His first name, Cole, is synergistic with that of his established rival Ashe ("coal" & "ash"), and his initials are "CC", which is an abbreviation for "crowd control", something that he's become quite infamous for with his Flashbang.
* QuickDraw: Played with. His ''Deadeye'' ability allows him to OneHitKill targets instantly and quickly... if their health is low enough. If the targets' health is full, it may take a while to load up your shots, allowing the enemy players to wipe you out before you can attack.
* RecruitingTheCriminal: When Overwatch arrested him, they offered him a chance to join their ranks, or rot in prison. He chose the former, and he turned out to be a hero.
* RedIsHeroic: He wears a red [[BadassCape Badass Serape]]. He's also a reformed criminal who doubles as a HitmanWithAHeart.
* ReformedCriminal: Was once a Deadlock member responsible for illegal weapon trafficking until he was busted by Overwatch. Nowadays, he's a gun-slinging vigilante who fights for justice.
* RefusalOfTheCall: He got Winston's recall message, but he's occupied with other unspecified business and doesn't show up to Overwatch's reunion in ''Zero Hour''. He does, however, get Echo back online to take his place.
* RevolversAreJustBetter: His main weapon is a revolver, and he's one of the hardest-hitting gun heroes sans Reaper.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: Uses one to cover his face when equipped with the "Mystery Man" skin. Doesn't hinder his asskicking any one bit.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: [=McCree=] bailed on Overwatch when he realized that Blackwatch was conspiring against Overwatch. This was likely a long time coming, as his doubts about Blackwatch likely started forming the moment [[spoiler:Gabriel murdered the Talon agent Antonio in cold blood]] during the events of ''Retribution''.
* SharpDressedMan: His "Gambler" skin makes him better groomed and immaculately dressed, complete with a BadassLongCoat.
* ShootTheHostageTaker: In the comic short "Train Hopper", he shoots down several [[spoiler:Talon]] soldiers inside a train after they take the passengers hostage, with absolutely no civilian casualties.
* ShowdownAtHighNoon:
** Referenced by his ultimate, ''Deadeye'', with him even saying ''"It's high noon..."'' when activating it. He also sometimes references this before the battle starts, saying "Well, it's high noon somewhere in the world..."
** Played gleefully straight in ''Reunion'', standing off against Ashe and her Deadlock Gang, building up the tension as they take aim, then once the clock hits noon, hell breaks loose.
* SimpleYetAwesome: [=McCree's=] combat style involves just shooting things, and occasionally flashbanging and ''then'' shooting things. However, these two abilities — with his high damage and ability to interrupt a character at almost any time — make him one of the most dangerous and effective characters in the game.
* SmallStepsHero: In Issue #1 of the webcomic, [=McCree=] kicks a valuable MacGuffin off the train he's on. While this ensures that the mercenaries who attacked the train will take it for themselves, it also means the civilians on the train are out of harm's way.
* SmokingIsCool: Always shown with a cigar in his mouth.
* SniperPistol: The Peacekeeper is ''perfectly'' accurate except when using Fan the Hammer. To compensate, its damage decreases rather quickly past medium range. Its long-range damage was briefly buffed, but was rolled back because it rendered certain other heroes useless or redundant.
* SouthernGentleman: He's from the USA and is from New Mexico. He's very respectful towards women and is just as gentlemanly with Echo.
* SpaghettiWestern: His look owes a lot to it. His ultimate references it even more. As long as it's activated, a sepia filter is applied and a faint gust of wind appears, along with the occasional tumbleweed.
* SpitefulSpit: His "Spit" emote has him do this to the side, though rather nastily, he still does this with the Mystery Man and Vigilante skins [[{{Squick}} in spite of wearing a huge, lower-face-covering scarf]]. [[DevelopersForesight At least the animators made sure to remove the spit particle]], but still, ew.
* StatusInflictionAttack: The Flashbang stuns targets ''and'' deals a small amount of damage at the same time.
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: When Sombra (whose hobby is digging up hidden dirt and things people have tried to hide) smugly asks if Jesse [=McCree=] is his real name, he answers that he doesn't know what she's heard, but his name's not ''Joel''. This references the fact that when [=McCree=] was first introduced, the fans thought his name was Joel. When [=McCree=] was officially debuted by Jeff, he joked that [=McCree=] "[[AscendedFanon hates being called Joel]]." It even extends to an in-universe article written about him stopping a robbery, which was [[http://zooheaded.tumblr.com/post/157932723565 credited to Joel Morricone.]]
* TattooedCrook: His original left arm had a Deadlock gang tattoo on it, as can be seen in his Blackwatch skin.
* TheTeamNormal: In ''Retribution'', he's on the same team with a SuperSoldier with wraith powers, a CyberNinja who can use spirit dragons, and a MadScientist with all sorts of genetic enhancements. Meanwhile, he's just a guy with a six-shooter and ''very'' good aim.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Among those on the ''Retribution'' mission, [=McCree=] was the only one to show concern and outrage over Reyes [[spoiler:murdering Antonio in cold blood]], while Genji showed no concern and Moira outright said Reyes had nothing to apologize for.
* TookALevelInIdealism: He used to be a criminal and quite a cynic, but became an idealistic hero during his time in Blackwatch. In contrast, the opposite happened to Soldier: 76, a WideEyedIdealist who TookALevelInCynic.
* {{Tuckerization}}: Was named after a real-life former employee of Blizzard. However, after his namesake was fired from Blizzard in 2021 for being complicit in sexual harrasment in the company, the character was renamed. In universe, Cole Cassidy is his real name that he abandoned after becoming an outlaw, with "Jesse [=McCree=]" being an alias he used from his criminal career onward.
* UnflinchingWalk: A Play Of The Game highlight has [=McCree=] throw his lit cigar at a stockpile of Chinese New Year explosives. A second later, the explosion goes off, and cue slow-motion walk by [=McCree=]. Amusingly, this also works with the Lifeguard skin too, [[AchievementsInIgnorance despite his cigar being replaced with a lollipop stick]].
* UnorthodoxReload: Not quite the oddest in the game, but the way he reloads his ''Peacemaker'' is very efficient. [[GunTwirling Spinning it on his finger]], he lets gravity empty out the spent shell casing, jams in a speedloader to replace the bullets in one go, then with a twist of his wrist kicks the chamber back into place, getting it ready to fire again within 1.5 seconds.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: In his ''Lifeguard'' skin. [[MrFanservice No one is complaining.]]
* WantedPoster: His "Wanted" spray, which depicts the price on his head being $60,000,000. He has another with the picture being an empty spot, [[HilarityEnsues allowing the player to put it over anything.]]
* WearingAFlagOnYourHead: His "American" skin not only replaces his serape with the American flag, it gives his revolver a red, white, and blue color scheme and his belt buckle now says "USA."
* WhatTheHellHero: He's outraged when Gabriel [[spoiler:murders Antonio even though the plan was to extract him]].
-->'''[=McCree=]:''' Reyes, what did you do?! This was NOT the plan!
* WouldntHitAGirl: Lampshaded in one of his [[BondOneLiner post-kill lines]] against Widowmaker, stating that he normally doesn't like having to kill women... except for her.
-->'''[=McCree=]:''' I don't like shooting a lady. But for you, I'll make an exception.

Mei is a scientist who has taken the fight to preserve the environment into her own hands.\\

-----
* AbnormalAmmo:
* BecomingTheCostume:

* AchillesHeel: Her playstyle is all about [[DeathFromAbove taking to the skies to deal damage]], but since she's not very fast (outside of extreme vertical bursts of motion from her ''Jump Jets'') and frequently out in the open without cover, heroes with instantaneous {{hitscan}} weapons without travel time, such as [[SniperPistol McCree]] or [[SniperRifle Widowmaker]], can take her out very easily, or at least force her into sub-optimal positions to avoid being shot down.

The first thing a renegade loses is their name, and this one gave up his long ago. Running from his past meant running from himself, and each passing year only widened the divide between who he had been and what he had become. But in every cowboy's life, there comes a time when he has to stop and make a stand. To make this new Overwatch better - to make things right - he had to be honest with his team and himself. The cowboy he was rode into the sunset, and Cole Cassidy faced the world at dawn.
