Originally introduced in ''Dragon of the North'' before being made playable in ''Defiant Honor''. The Nurarihyon was the Guardian Spirit of the late Kagetsuna Kojuro before possessing Date Masamune. In Japanese lore, the Nurarihyon takes the shape of an old man with a short stature, an oddly elongated head, and often elegant clothing. This rather benign image belies its true nature as an incredibly powerful {{yokai}}, and is even called "the Supreme Commander of All Monsters". Its presence is such that all yokai listen to the Nurarihyon's every word with respect and treat him has their leader. This effect even extends to humans, as when a Nurarihyon slips into a busy household to indulge himself on food and drink, the humans are very much unable to stop him as they treat him as though he is the master of the house.

The dual nature of its intertwined snake and turtle bodies have also made it a symbol of yin and yang; indeed, its ties to ''UsefulNotes/{{Onmyodo}}'' magic are deep. Highly skilled ''UsefulNotes/{{Onmyodo}}'' mages venerate Genbu as their Guardian Spirit, and have mastered the many powers of water in order to extinguish fire, which they see as an agent of chaos.

hirohami is a Guardian Spirit in the form of a white viper. White snakes are worshipped in many regions of Japan as messengers or personifications of the gods, often being seen as symbols of growth, rebirth, long life, and prosperity. The messenger of Benzaiten, patron goddess of prosperity and the arts, is believed to be a white snake that will bring one vast riches. This belief has led to the Japanese practice of keeping the shed skin of a snake in one's wallet, or using a wallet that is made of snakeskin. Many snake deities are also considered gods of the water, a famous example being the white snake emissary of the Suwa Grand Shrine. The viper's powerful venom and extremely resilient nature have long made it an object of reverence, so a white viper in particular should be considered a most powerful spirit.
