I went through the Original Works section and moved all of the unpublished works I found to the proper categories. (As well as two works that seem to be misplaced fanfiction entries).

The following works looked like they might be unpublished. I left them alone for now, but if anybody could clarify their status one way or the other, it would be helpful.
  • Abe
  • A Castle of Colors
  • Akimbo Albino
  • Bad Blood
  • Bjorn Westlander, Agent Retriever
  • Dr. Detective
  • Enor
  • EPIC Oretachi
  • Eternal Anhelia
  • Hidden Heroes
  • Moonfall Robo Saga G Alpha
  • Peacemaker
  • The Princess and the Bard
  • Rise of the Shadows

I think it would be a good idea to sort the "original works" category by medium. I have an already-sorted list put together on my computer, but would like to hear other peoples opinions on whether or not to do this first.

In addition, I have no idea what these works are, due to their pages not specifying or being somewhat hard to get information out of.
  • Hermiones AB Cs (may also be a fanfiction)
  • My Favorite Things the Legacy
  • Rast
  • Space Boyfriend
  • The Wonderful World of Wildcat

As well as these following pages, which were redlinks
  • A Book Smuggler's Tale
  • The Driver
  • Fragile
  • HARM: a brief History of Crime
  • The Mysterious Arizonian Death
  • Tasakeru

This troper says it would be a wise move to sort these ideas out via medium. BTW, where would an idea for a video game fall under?

Also, how do you add a Character Sheet for your idea?

Alright, finally made the split, Some things are still unsorted.

I'm going to go down the list and start investigating to make sure that everything is A) in the right categories, and B) exists.

Regarding character sheets, I left them in for now, but I really think we could just delete them from this index, since they appear as a tab on the page for the work itself. (The exception would be for unpublished works which currently only have character sheets).

If I end up moving a work that actually exists into "unpublished" and anybody knows otherwise, move it back (and edit the article itself to indicate where it can be found)

Literature Works have all been verified for existence. Exceptions:

  • The Arcadian Legends
appears to have existed at one point on the web, but was taken down by the author. There does not appear to be any way to access the work, so it may be best to move it back to "Unpublished". It has been left alone for now. Page has been removed as per creators wishes. Work is currently unavailable to public

  • Bjorn Westlander Agent Retriever
author has a deviantart with mention of the story, but I was unable to find any actual fragments of the work itself.

  • Carry On His Name
page claims that the work exists online and on lulu, but I have been unable to find it.

  • Elies Story
page appears to have randomly disappeared. Prior to that, I had concerns, since the work was said to exist as a tvtropes forum discussion which was apparently deleted.

if anybody could offer more concrete information as to the existence (or temporary lack thereof) of these three works, it would be appreciated.

Finally Done. Except for the three works remaining above and two still in the unsorted category, everything from the original works folder has been moved to the proper category and verified for existence.

The following works were pageless and did not have any evidence of existence. They were deleted from the list.

New Business: What about Fan Works?

My intent is to sort the fan works first by medium of the fanwork. Most of these categories can probably be merged with the equivalent original-works category (eg. we only have two video games, so there's really no need for us to have both a "Video Game" and "Fan Video Game" when we could just put a note afterwards noting that it's a fangame). The exceptions would be Literature (because that is currently our largest original-works category and will almost definitely be the largest subdivision of fanworks), and possibly webcomics (I've already separated two fan-comics from the original webcomics category, but there may not be enough fancomics to justify an entirely new category.

Each Fan work should be followed by a note indicating which work(s) it is derived from, and depending on the size of the Literature - Fanfiction folder it may be worth splitting into categories based on original series (for some series, at least, with a misc. category for the less-represented ones).

Does anybody else have thoughts on whether or not there is a better way to do the categorization?

Kersey475: If a troper has an idea for a superhero, should they put that idea in Fan Works, Original Works, or Unpublished Works?
muninn
04:55:01 PM May 21st 2010
If there's no form of media created with that superhero in it (ie. story, comic, animation), it would go in unpublished.

If there is, it would go under original works, unless the story involves characters or settings from another work (in which case it would go in fan works).

Kersey475: Well I developed my own idea for a superhero, but he is supposed to exist within the DC universe and there is no form of media created with him in it (yet). Where do I put the idea?

Unpublished works for now, fan works once a story containing with him exists

I moved my work from Original to Unpublished. The prologue and the first chapter of it is technically published at Deviant Art, but the fact is a) it's not in a medium where I'm earning money from it and b) it's not in what I consider to be its final form; frankly, as it exists right now what should be a main character, but not THE main character has taken over the whole plot and I'm currently trying to fix that.

Looks like somebody accidentally deleted it. It's been restored now.

Would an game that's still in progress go under Unpublished Works, or should I put off making the page until I'm done (I've already written and completed the plot, but the actual game is still unfinished)? I'm a bit fuzzy on if Unpublished Works is for unfinished works or stuff that's already been finished but isn't commercial.

Unpublished works is for unfinished works (or, in some cases works that are just concepts). Works that are in their final form would go under Fan Works or Original works. There is no distinction between whether or not the work is commercial.

edit: In this case "Published" means "available to the public in some way", not "released to the public through certain means"

Copyright law likewise defines a "published" work as one whose copies have been distributed to the public. But video games made by individuals are often distributed in an unfinished state under a Perpetual Beta model (e.g. Mine Craft or Dwarf Fortress). Are Perpetual Beta troper works "published"?
muninn
01:00:33 PM Jun 18th 2011
Perpetual Beta works are published to an extent. The currently available part (Demo, Beta, whatever), would be considered published, since anybody could go and play it and objectively observe the tropes in it.

If the developer has posted their intentions about what they plan on adding to the game in the future, I'd say that that should go on the same page, but split into a different section to designate that it is not currently part of the game.

I'm not an authority on this, though.

That works listed on this page have to go into non-Main namespaces is a stupid rule; it certainly broke a lot of links to such things as Adventurers! and Antihero For Hire.

I think the wiki might be moving towards a policy where all works are in non-main namespaces or something.

From the Namespace page: In a perfect world, every work on TV Tropes would be in its corresponding namespace. But in the words of Fast Eddie: "If we had had more forethought, that's the way we would have started five years ago. Today, it is kind of a retrofitting nightmare. The job of adding a namespace qualifier to every reference to a series throughout 100+ K pages gives me the weebies."

... Not sure what point I was trying to make with that, but I'm sure the point was made pretty hard there.

AwesomeZombie22, if you're going to move works, please move them to the relevent category rather than placing them in "unsorted".

Additionally, none of the pages for the works you moved indicated that the works have actually been made (nor could I confirm this through independent investigation), and some of them didn't even have pages (though this is probably due to the movement of pages out of Troper Works namespace). The "Unpublished" category supersedes all other classifications, so they should remain there until they have been created.

I went to try and move the wrestling fic, Mind Tricks, into an appropriate folder, but when I opened the page, there's nothing there but the offer to start the new page. The page existed and had several entries on it already, so is there any way for me to recover it so I can put it somewhere it belongs?

All of the pages in the Troper Works/ namespace were moved out, as the namespace is being discontinued. Try Mind Tricks

The existence of a "we're sorry (Not!), but the Troperworks namespace is no longer supported" keeps the links blue. Isn't there some way to make links utilizing the Troperworks namespace a different color, so that we know what to edit without hunting through every link?

Okay, maybe I'm losing it, or the page was eliminated, but I remember there being a page somewhere here in the Fan Fic section about Fan Fics that will never be published/written. I thought maybe it would be here or linked to from here, but I can't find it. Am I blind, or not putting in the right search terms? Or am I getting a processing error and layering two memory pathways over each other? If it's that, then I think it's time for a tune-up.

No, it was a Troper Tales page, IIRC. But I can't remember what page it was connected to. Arg, this is frustrating! It was basically a page of Tropers talking about Fanfics they had thought of, but wouldn't publish and why.

Hypothetical: Troper game A uses the same rules as game B with a completely original setting, characters, etc. By copyright standards (e.g. Capcom v. Data East), this would be an original work, as methods of play are exempt from copyright (17 USC 102(b) and foreign counterparts; see "Idea-expression divide" on TOW). But for TV Tropes purposes, does a troper-made video game that would be an example of Serial Numbers Filed Off (if that trope didn't have an examples lockout) count as original or derivative?

Or laconically: Where would a Tetris clone go?

I know I'm waaaaay late, but...why was this index phased out? It seems to me like a much better system than just sticking one's own works into regular namespaces like Literature and Film. I know There Is No Such Thing As Notability, but it was so much more organized and less awkward that way. If I wrote something original (as opposed to a fanfic), I'd much rather have it in a Troper Works-type namespace than putting it in Literature...heck, I'd probably prefer to put a fanfic in there than in Fanfic. This way would make me feel like a self-important Small Name Big Ego, and it just feels so much more...troper-community-ish in a namespace entirely for troper works.

tl;dr: Why was this index phased out? I can't think of any reason why it wasn't better this way; please enlighten me as to the reasons other people disagreed.
