Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous Post
Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[up] I think he meant the guy above you, Fried Warthog.

Nicely put, by the by.

The Terminals are the closest to counting, but I'm still confused by them.

You know, the first Nie R had a character who almost qualified. I watched an LP of that game in preparation for its sequel because Platinum Games is the best developer of the decade, and when this bastard turned up and pulled his wretched stunts I declared “Unless this guy shows redeeming qualities I’m nominating him to be a Complete Monster,” You can probably guess what happens. There’s a lot of novellas, info books, audio dramas, stage plays etc. Based on Nie R and its mother series Drakengard, though, and from what I hear we probably have some good candidates from them. However, they’re only available in Japan, so I’d have to rely on fan translations.

There is one character I wish I could nominate but can’t, though: God.

The Greater-Scope Villain of both Drakengard and Nie R, God hates humans because it considers them mistakes due to being so strong willed. The creator of Midgard, Drakengard’s setting, and the creatures within it, God creates Dragons to kill humans. When that doesn’t work it makes the Seeds of Resurrection… more aptly known as the Seeds of Destruction, which takes a dead body and revives it as a twisted monster that exists only to kill humans. In Drak 1 proper, The Cult of the Watchers that worship God and its angels, the Watchers, kidnap a little girl and brainwash her into being their High Priestess. They also brainwash the Empire, more children included, into becoming red eyed fanatics that wage on the world to break the Seals that hold back the Seeds. In Branch D (Because Drakengard has multiple branches and multiple timelines) God sends the Watchers- which are giant naked babies because Taro Yoko- to eat humanity, led by the Queen Beast, which is a giant naked women that I think tries to consume the world’s time. In Ending E, our Anti-Hero Caim and his Dragon companion Angelus manage to take the Queen Beast… Into our world. Somehow. They win, but God uses this to his advantage. Despite being foreign to this world and having nothing to do with it, God still hates humans, so it decides to use the Queen Beast’s remains to infect people and force them into a Sadistic Choice: Accept a pact and become a red eyed, mindless soldier in the army of Legion to Kill All Humans or reject it and become a pillar of salt, leading to all the misery of the world of Nie R.

And I don’t even know what it gets up to in Drak 2 and 3.

Responsible for almost everything wrong for very petty reasons, it would be an easy keep…

Except it’s never appeared. Ever. I cannot, in good conscience, write an EP for something I have no idea even has a personality. And I hate that because this God sickens me. We’ll probably never see it or kill it because Taro likes to play with our expectations, that wonderful bastard.

So that’s my thoughts on the so called Dragon Sphere of Drakengard and Nie R’s capacity for C Ms.

Nie R Automata GOTY 2017 and all years proceeding.

Platinum pisses me off...Mad World was fun, and Revengeance got a nice port, but neither of the Bayonettas nor Anarchy Reigns got a PC release :( And the latter didn't even get a Wii release...despite it being the sequel to a Wii exclusive just bugs me

Happy birthday 431110.

Here's Ozuno's write up:

  • Ninja Assassin: Ozuno is the ruthless leader of the Ozuno clan, a clan takes in orphaned children and raises them as Child Soldiers putting them through intense training regimes, where he routinely abuses them such abuse includes whipping them to the point of leaving scars on their bodies and forcing them to compete in brutal sparring matches where they beat each other to a bloody pulp, all for the purpose of making them the perfect ninja assassins. These assassins would go after their targets via black sand in a letter as a Calling Card, striking in the dark or dimly lit places killing not only the targets but anyone allied or unfortunate enough to be in the same room as the target as to leave no witnesses. Years prior to the film, when Kirko had tried to leave the clan Ozuno had her captured and killed and nearly does the same to Raizo when he betrays him as well. During his final confrontation with Raizo he nearly kills Mika by stabbing her where her heart is suppose to be with a cold, apathetic look on his face.

I just remembered that Steele is also a CM who hasn't killed anyone, but he did condemn all those kids to nearly die just to spite Balto.

Though note that deliberately letting somebody die, even if you didn't directly kill them, IS actually a crime - it's called Depraved Indifference Homicide.

[up] Actually (I'm no lawyer), but deliberately withholding medicine may be at least 3rd degree homicide.

BTW, these pages still need quotes:

As a cautionary tale against proposing villains whose arc isn't done yet, I was recently considering bringing up Crash from the Interactive Comic Awful Hospital. It's an evil AI in an interdimensional hospital who killed patients and medical personnel alike, caused plane crashes for fun, forced people into sadistic choices, tortured a man to transform him into a bloodthirsty monster, threatened reality itself by trying to take the easy way out instead of helping people deal with an Eldritch Abomination, and canonically erased some readers from reality.

Then in his very last appearance a few weeks ago, it was revealed that he lied about some of his crimes, that he still cared about the technician who used to take care of him, he was compared to a sick kid, and in the end was given an Alas, Poor Villain moment.

Okay, write up time...

Btw, for Morty? Might wanna spoil his name, since it's a huge reveal

  • Nailbiter: Garth Diggins, better know as 'Morty,' and The Master, is the secret mastermind of the evil behind the town of Buckaroo. Having come to Buckaroo decades ago, The Master experimented with killers to discover what turns a person into one. Having discovered a 'serial killer gene,' the Master took those who tested positive and mentally tortured them to activate the latent gene within them, resulting in over a dozen becoming serial killers known collectively as the Buckaroo Butchers. When Agent Finch and Sheriff Sharon Crane begin investigating the disappearance of an FBI agent who got too close to the truth, the Master reveals he tortured and mutilated said agent before turning an FBI agent into a killer to have her finish the job. Murdering many others who get too close to the truth, even creating a new serial killer to murder anyone who flees Buckaroo, the Master finally decides to start over elsewhere by trying to burn the entire town of Buckaroo to ash with its inhabitants, being more vile than any serial killer himself.

  • The Wailing: The seemingly friendly shaman Il-Gwang is, in truth, in league with the demonic presence hanging over the rural village that is the film's setting. Along with his demonic partner, Il-Gwang sends in a Hate Plague to the village, which results in those infected murdering those around them before dying. When the police officer Jong-goo investigates, Il-Gwang misleads him, resulting in Jong-goo's young daughter being infected. Il-Gwang feigns at being helpful while weakening the protections of the village's actual guardian spirit, finally resulting in Jong-goo's death when his daughter kills him before snapping photos of the bodies, revealing that he keeps pictures of the victims as souvenirs of his deeds.

  • Aftermath: Life Debt: Grand Moff Lozen Tolruck conceals the fall of the Emperor from his own men to continue ruling over the planet Kashyyyk as its king. Forcing the Wookiee race into slave labor by installing inhibitor chips that cause intense pain in the Wookiees, Tolruck also begins hunting them for sport and food. When the former Rebellion comes to liberate Kashyyyk, Tolruck continues his barbaric activities and tortures a rebel who falls into his hands while also considering farming the Wookiee population for meat and crossbreeding them with Talz, a sentient species he finds especially delicious. When he realizes it's impossible to hold Kashyyyk, Tolruck ordered his small fleet of star destroyers to annihilate the entire world, declaring he will surrender Kashyyyk to noone, not even the Empire itself.

Friday examples:

  • From The Butcher, Rausch and Mueller are a pair of Nazi war criminals. During the war, Rausch was an infamous torturer and murderer who met his death at the hands of Jack Marshak. Mueller, using the occult, revived Rausch and despite being imprisoned as a war criminal, directs Rausch to murder the former members of Jack's squad using his signature barbed wire as a strangulation device. Promoting fascist and bigoted ideals as a radio host, Rausch mentally torments Jack and the other survivors while he prepares to murder them. When confronted, Mueller declares their ultimate objective is for Rausch to enter politics and eventually bring about a rebirth of the Nazi regime, both believing they are the master race, destined to rise anew.
  • Asteroth is a fallen angel and priest of Satan who is devoted to freeing his lord and master. Attempting to fulfill dark prophecies, Asteroth aims to kill a pure hearted nun, first by infecting the minds of other nuns to drive them homicidal before they die, then driving the animals of the village murderously insane. When this fails, Asteroth brainwashes Ryan and has him murder the nun, before having him abduct a crippled girl with unshakeable faith in god so Asteroth can sacrifice her to Satan and have his master manifest in her body as the antichrist. When he confronts Jack on his motivations, Asteroth gleefully reveals his future vision of the world, showing Jack images of mass destruction, death and oppression on a global scale. Intending to end the entire world, Asteroth is without doubt one of the cruelest monsters ever faced by Ryan and Micki.

And last...but not least...

  • Ardyn Izunia poses as a 'man of no consequence' but is far older and far crueler than he initially seems. As the Grand Chancellor of the Nifleheim Empire, Ardyn arranges for the invasion and destruction of Lucis's capital city Insomnia and later reveals his true colors by gutting the game's heroine Lunafreya when she has summoned the Astral Leviathan, resulting in greater damage and the deaths of nearly everyone in the nearby city. With Lunafreya's death, an affliction known as the Starscourge is allowed to run rampant, turning many into monstrous daemons as the nights grow longer. Fixated on his chosen nemesis Prince Noctis, Ardyn tricks him into almost murdering his best friend Prompto by making Noct see Prompto as Ardyn. Turning on Nifleheim, Ardyn lets daemons run rampant throughout the city, annihilating it and turning many of the people into Daemons themselves which leaves them in hideous pain. In addition, Ardyn reveals he is the one who taught Nifleheim how to convert people to living weapons to begin with, and tricks Noct into being absorbed by the Crystal that is the source of power for the line of Lucis. Awakening ten years later, Noct sees that Ardyn has made the world a twisted land where humanity faces annihilation, all for Noct's benefit so Ardyn can destroy him as the Chosen King at last. Despite his past of being rejected by the people he once saved, Ardyn's sadism, megalomania and utter acceptance of the monster he has become solidify him as a self-described true monster and even after his defeat, he lurks in the afterlife for one last chance to destroy Noct and prevent him from saving the world, wishing nothing more than to damn the world out of spite.

431110 happy birthday

One question. Does Mr Rictus from Wanted count?

Who is he?

He's one of the 5 heads of the Fraternity, a band of super villains who teamed up in the 80s and killed the superheroes and then rewrote reality to basically be our world but worse. Rictus is kinda sick of the status quo and wants to go back to the bad old days

What's he done?

Okay he has his minion Shithead (who is composed of the feces of the 666 most evil people who ever lived...yes really) kill one of the other leaders of the Fraternity the Professor by drowning him in poop....again really. Then he kills the entire family of one of the nicer fraternity members doll master for no reason. He also shoots a boys parents, leaving him alive so that maybe the kid can grow up and become a superhero that can challenge him. He also took part in the superhero genocide and kills Batman and Robin (well their standing) by feeding them to a giant mechanical octopus. He than has his men go on a rampage through new york. His plans are thwarted by Wesley who kills him.

Mitigating factors/Freudian excuse

Apparently he was a devout christian who when he saw that there was no god (which makes no sense since apparently this is the same universe where god and the anti christ exist) and decided to just do whatever the fuck he wanted.

Heinous factor

Wanted is a dark work. EVERY character is a prick except for Wesley's neighbor, who he kills. ALL the leaders of the Fraternity are awful people (The Professor is a pedophile, engineered the genocide to begin with and most awfully of all made superman into christopher reeve). Adam One and the Emperor are mass murderers too and The Future is a racist nazi. Rictus is more open about what a savage he is

Does he count....

Kinda iffy
