I think the modern radars are installed on every ship big enough out there. As are the systems that allow a small crew to man the ship - Musashi IRL had 2399 men inboard when she was sunk. That's way way more than the academy we see in the anime can reasonably provide.

I'm not that familiar with the Independence class to comment on it.

Back to the actual plot of this show, I seriously think that the Harekaze's instructor is some kind of spy. I mean, it's the only thing that I can personally think of to explain this Downer Beginning without any major contradictions to the plot so far.

Yes, I did move this Wham Episode example to that trope on the main page.

@Myssa Rei I need to go and rewatch again, but I doubt that's a Bofors 57mm on Sarushima. The listed rate of fire - 22 rpm - is ten times slower than an actual Bofors 57mm (which can do max 220 rpm), but it fits the 127mm DP gun the Japanese use on their D Ds. It's definitely not the stealth turret used on the Independence and Freedom. At 18:53 we get a good shot of the turret as it's rotating; deffo looks like a Bofors 57mm to me (I've seen that particular style of turret before, bugger if I can remember) but then at 18:57 it magically turns into the 127mm gun used on JS Atago and JS Ashigara.

Damnit anime give us some consistency yo.

As for Harekaze's radar, without actually looking under the hood I can't tell what kind of radar they have. But at the very least it's modern navigation radar which is fairly plug and play, from what my Navy friends tell me.

@Swimsuit on Engineering: Also, I just realized, there is another reason why Engineering (and to be fair, all the girl crews) won't wear open undies at sea, but it's rather... tasteless to talk here.

Surprise factor's fading, so eyes turn to what could happen next. The post's author remarks not having read the manga, and I myself could not find any copies online, so my next question is...has anyone read the manga? [lol]

The manga is an entirely different thing from the anime as near as I can see from reading around. Several places say that it is an adaptation of the original anime but the manga started at the end of last year... lol.

[up] Awesome, thanks! It means that the love triangle aspect might not happen, and quite honestly, I hope it doesn't, otherwise it'd take away from precious time spent detailing ship operations smile

The manga's not even about Mike and Moka at all, but one of the members of the Maintenance Crew, if I remember correctly. And it doesn't feature ships EITHER, to the point where it intersects with the anime right at the point Mashiro is assigned as Vice-Captain instead.

[up] Thanks for t3h corroboration. This means that Yaranakya's assertion that the girls WILL enter a love triangle because their names are allegedly popular cat names (which the original post soundly blows away already) is utterly broken. Epic [lol]

Specifically, the manga is about the girl on the left, Hiromi, who's with the Engineering section.

It's kind of funny, really, especially how this all played in the ruse about Hai-Furi being a fluffy SOL show, as again there's no mention of warships in the manga at all. Heck, the manga even uses the old pre-air logo, instead of the updated High School Fleet version we got after episode 1.

For comparison, this would be like having a Girls Und Panzer official manga being about team Rabbit instead of Miho's team, then focusing entirely on their movie-watching hobby instead of anything remotely related to Senshado.

Preview for episode 2.

It shows curry and hinjinks, but it seems that, yeah, our girls are on the run here. Speaking of curry, I guess they managed to solve the rice cooker problem after all if curry rice is on the menu.

Also LOL, for those nutters who also like Japanese Mythology and/or Touhou, the shrine visited by Mashiro should be VERY familiar to you, as it enshrines a certain Wind God who subjugated the local god of Lake Suwa...

"Join the Blue Mermaids, they said... Sail the seas, they said... Well, I didn't expect my ship to get fired upon by my instructor..."

Anyway, I just did a rewatch of episode 1 and realized something...

The principal's surname is "Munetani", so does this mean Mashiro is the principal's daughter? No wonder Mashiro's disappointed that she's not the captain, she seems to have a family name to uphold. (Sort of like GuP's Maho having to live up to her mother's expectations.)

Also, that next episode preview looks a bit carefree considering the situation the Harekaze crew is in (being labeled as mutineers and all)...

That's one of the major points of speculation, yeah, that someone was trying to get Mashiro, and by association, the principal (if she is indeed her mum), discredited. Assigned to a ship of misfits, with a nobody as a captain, sounds suspicious enough as it is too.

The WHYS aren't clear at this point though, but then again, we never really got a conclusive answer from the schoolship administration why they wanted Ooarai in Girls Und Panzer closed either.

[up] At this point, all signs of a conspiracy point to Instructor Furushou. But I don't know how deep that conspiracy goes.

Makes me wonder if this will eventually lead to the show deconstructing the "military moe" genre just like Spec Ops: The Line did for modern military shooter games. Maybe An Aesop along the lines of, "Admiring military equipment and gushing over the cute girls who can somehow operate it may be fine to an extent, but ultimately, (real) War Is Hell."

Stella Gakuin C3-Bu tried that. It didn't work out. Also this has Girls Und Panzer's writer on duty, so while it's going to show a more serious tone compared to the Senshado sports romp, it's never going to go black.

@Myssa: I thought of that show as well, but kinda forgot the page for it. Oh well. (Not that the other "cute girls doing airsoft" series was any better... Or the other one with a Bifauxnen.)

O-o-o-okay... Harekaze must be cursed or something, everyone's firing at them first and asking questions maybe.

Apparently, they aren't the only ones to get into some sort of trouble. Musashi is having problems too, as of the end of ep.2

[up] or it's a trap

Pet theory: the ship is caught up in the events that leads to the creation of the Fleet of Fog and the highly automated battleships are rebelling and that's why the German girl fled the Admiral Spee.

[up] That'd be some really AU of "Aoki Hagane"; Hyuuga reveals - I think in ch. 54 - that the "Fleet of Fog" was supposed to come online on May 1, 1945. That's kind of way before Independence-class was ever designed...

I actually don't think it's a trap. At least not one made by the crew of Musashi: that ominous image of hers at the end kind of implies that something not good is happening there.
