R2 is secretly leading a droid uprising, manipulating events over the course of all seven films. He was the one who manipulated events so that Palpatine could enact his attempted genocide against the Jedi, and then proceeded to undermine him in order to co-opt Empire assets for his own growing army. He is in the final preparations of launching his own invasion force onto the galaxy, and is utilizing everyone's desire to find Luke to keep them both distracted until they're where he wants them.
