Ok, per mod decision, the purpose of this thread is to scrutinize and clean up pages about web sites. Other Sites, especially, has become a catch-all for "my favorite web site that I feel like pimping."

THE FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS:

  • A Web Site Is Not A Work For Troping Purposes: A website can contain tropable content, but the site itself does not automatically have a place with us simply by existing.
  • A Web Site That Is Not Tropable Can Sometimes Be Repurposed: It may have a place as a Useful Notes page, or serve as an index if it hosts a lot of works that we do trope.
  • User Antics Are Not Tropable: Trolls, mod decisions, forum drama. Such are Troper Tales and sources of spiritual decay. They must be purged, even from acceptable pages.
  • User Created Content Is Potentially Tropable: But most of it has its own categories already, such as Game Mod, Fan Fiction, or Journal Roleplay.

Put pages you believe should be completely cut in the crowner at the bottom. If you believe a page can be saved or migrated, make a post with details. Other Sites contains the primary targets right now, but any page about a web site should be scrutinized

Came across Website.Scorehero in the course of cleaning up a TRS decision, which is apparently a forum for fans of Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and other such games.

Going solely by what's on the page, it doesn't seem like something that's really worthy of a page here, given how sparse it is.

Is Not Always Right and its sister pages even worth it? NAR a mess of Weblinks Are Not Examples ZCE's and RL troping/gossip besides (and the others are likely more of the same). Opinions?

The presentation is as funny stories that happen to be real. Considering what it is, especially with the anonymity, I suspect a lot of it is made up, or altered.

Should the sites I added, Dating Reality And Things and John The Mancunian Man, be removed or does There Is No Such Thing As Notability apply? I wasn't trying to Entry Pimp these, just added them due to their partial obscurity.

I was nearly about to add Stockport TED, a hodgepodge of various sites by one author, but due to its obscurity, should it be left, or added, because there's a lot of tropes discussed by its author?

I would move You Tube and Tumblr to being their own Web Original articles, due to cultural reasons, and perhaps give the Tumblr article a full-scale Continuity Reboot, if we were prepared to do it as a "stick-to-the-facts, this is a historian writing it" type angle, and then have the tropes listed, but split into:

    Technology

    Others

Would this work?

[up] Maybe use Tumblr as an index for works hosted on the site?

[up] I agree. And [up][up] even if this scheme gets implemented, the Userbase folder will be removed from it. We never trope users here. A) it's blatantly off-mission, and B) it's tantamount to saying "Welcome trolls and flame warriors! Please feel free to turn our site into the next 4chan!" No thank you.

As a publisher, Tumblr would go under Creator/. So there's no real reason to keep the existing page. If someone wants to make a Creator.Tumblr page, that would be fine. (Nice, even.)

Ditto for some similar cases.

'K, so apparently Not Always X has come up in ATT as a salted nuke candidate for the same reasons I gave earlier (flies in the face of the RL troping ban/ROCEJ with the ZCE problem just a sideshow). Thoughts? Keep in mind that even the mods (well, Fighteer at any rate) are looking to kill it now.

As a longtime NAR/X reader, some of the stories are definitely fake, especially those in unfiltered.

BUT

Some are 100% definitely real.

There are FB pages dedicated to each of the sites. Plus, when the sites came under new ownership, they opted to allow FB commenting on the stories themselves.

Both on the FB pages and in the comments, people have stepped forward and said, "That's my story." They've also often provided more details, sequels and conclusions to the fiascos involved. (And had appropriate fits when important stuff was changed.)

So yes, some volume of the stories are troping Real Life people.

I'm not happy about the pages being cut, BUT I think NAR/X are not part of this site's mission.

I've already put some time into trying to clean up a little (at least on the Memes/ subpage, since the main and YMMV pages are locked and have been for ages), but by the "no troping userbase antics" criterion... yeah, Tumblr would have very little left. I just skimmed the main page for it and paring it down to only the website/tech would leave just a few examples.

(Specifically, these: Anti Poop-Socking, Ascended Glitch, *maybe* Design Student's Orgasm since that one's mostly about the official themes, Get Back in the Closet, and Take That!. The example for Urban Legend might be usable, but it's under the wrong trope. The rest are about things users do with/on the site.)

I hate to see a page so many people have put work into discarded, but if we have to ditch it as a tropable "work", I'd suggest we at least keep a Useful Notes page around given its prominence as a fandom hub and content host.

I suspect Reddit's gonna be in the same boat for the same reasons.

My two cents: I enjoy the sites. The identities of the guilty and stupid are concealed, so it's hardly mudslinging at specific people. In many cases people are willing to confess to their own stupid moments.

I've also participated in the clean-up effort of Tumblr's meme page, so I'd like to chime in on that topic. A Useful Notes page for Tumblr might be better than a Creator one since Tumblr itself doesn't really create anything. It hosts other people's work (i.e. their blogs). (This is different from something like TV broadcasting networks, since they don't just host works but sometimes fund works etc.)

[up][up][up] "I like it" is not sufficient reason to keep a page if it's problematic, and even if the entries are sufficiently anonymized it's still troping RL people.

Given how Acts of Gord is said to be basically Not Always Right, with a smaller focus, in their descriptions, I guess it's also against this site's mission?

And yeah, can the crowner be cleaned up??

[up][up] Nah, I'd say the tighter focus is why Acts of Gord is worth keeping. It's one person's stories so people aren't just pimping their own entries, the contextless links as examples are totally avoided, and the writing style is a bit more storytelling-oriented. If it being based on experiences Gord (presumably) actually had is enough to make it off-mission, we'd have to cut every work that's based on a true story.

(As for Not Always Right itself, eh, I'm ambivalent. I'd want to see how it looks after some heavy-duty cleanup- scrubbing the ZC Es and editorializing- before taking the nuclear option.)

Wiki.Fantendo came across the radar due to its creator(s) placing it on the Cut List and that request being denied. I offer that it does not meet the criteria for keeping according to our general rules on such things. Regardless, it has a Main redirect that needs dewicking.

From what I can tell, it has original content. The closest wiki that we trope that I can think of off the top of my head is SCP Foundation. While I agree with many of the Fantendo commenters that the quality of our page is pretty bad, I don't think that it doesn't meet the criteria for keeping.
