People die every day. Some of them are famous, some important, many newsworthy. This thread is for announcements of deaths in the news, discussions of the legacy of those recently deceased people, and memorials of same.
Please observe the usual rules about posting ettiquette and note that this is in On-Topic Conversations.
To start with, the last of the original Von Trapp Singers has died, Maria Von Trapp, 99, in Vermont. (This is the daughter of Captain Von Trapp, not her stepmother who was also named Maria. In the musical, they called her Louisa.) http://news.yahoo.com/maria-von-trapp-99-dies-vermont-005546425.html
2023 mod note:
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.
This doesn't mean that you can't discuss their life or legacy, or express an opinion as to whether they escaped justice for their actions. But if that starts to become a longer conversation, there are other OTC threads that may be more appropriate.

Former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro has died a the age of 90.
And so a long chapter in the story of Cuba comes to a close.
For better or for worse, he was a man who left his own personal mark on history.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)I'm tempted to add: "Yeah, like a dog leaves its mark." But I like dogs.

This Space Intentionally Left Blank. He was no saint, but he was a good lesson to the world on what happens when great powers are overreliant on puppets.
Rest in peace, you old bastard.
My reaction to this news is much like the Munchkins' reaction when Dorothy's house fell on the Wicked Witch of the East.
I imagine the people who really hated Castro are reacting in a manner similar to this:

Disgusted, but not surprisedLots of video from Little Havana of crowds partying in the streets on Twitter.
Fidel Castro is a heroic figure in Africa, and was best friends with Nelson Mandela...he is considered one of the figures who played a part in curtailing the power of the Apartheid government.
Not that this excuses the other stuff he did, the crackdown on homosexuals in Cuba and the political prisoners, but that this guy is genuinely considered, not without reason, to be a heroic figure for some people in the world.
My feelings is that line in Touch of Evil: "He was some kind of man, What does it matter what you say about people?"
He was the Last of His Kind, The Remnant of the Cold War, he outlived all his friends (Che/Allende/Indira Gandhi/Mandela/Pierre Trudeau/Khruschev) and his enemies.(Eisenhower/Kennedy/Johnson/Nixon/Ford/Carter/Reagan/Thatcher/Pinochet). When he took power, Nehru was till Prime Minister of India and Charles de Gaulle was in charge of France.
It really feels like the End of an Age.
Good riddance. The good die young.
I have my own theme for this:
20 More years...maybe...I hope not...

Inter arma enim silent legesWe're gonna be stuck with Trump for a while then.
Disgusted, but not surprisedAs President, to be succeeded by Donald II
Trump delenda estI have in-laws from Cuba and a lot of my older relatives used to work there sending money back to China so their families didn't starve. Castro taking over put the kibosh on that and forced them to flee to Canada and the US. Needless to say they've been looking forward to this day for a long time.
Despite all the cigar chomping and assassination attempts, Castro lived to be 90. Now that's an achievement.
If we compare Castro to other great defiers of Empires: Hannibal Barca v The Roman Republic, Napoleon Bonaparte v The British Empire...Castro actually had a Victory by Endurance against what he called El imperalismo yanqui.
Defiance however comes at a price, and in Castro's case, it was not paid by him and his government, but on his people and others.
Ron Glass, better known as Shepherd Book from Firefly, has died at the age of 71.
"Yup. That tasted purple.""It's not about making sense. It's about believing in something, and letting that belief be real enough to change your life."
Rest in peace.
Echoing hymn of my fellow passerine | Art blog (under construction)Andrew Sachs, mostly remembered as Manuel in Fawlty Towers, has died. My reaction: "Que?!"

Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur."You see, I speak English well! I learn it from a book!"
RIP man. You'll be missed.
Castro dies shortly before Trump rises to power.
I can't help feeling some sort of baton has been passed.
The joke on the internet is that Castro died after seeing Fulgencio Batista's reincarnation win the 2016 election.
I thought the joke was that Castro proclaimed he would not die until the US was broken...and then Trump was elected.
Marcel Gottlieb, mostly known as Gotlib, died today. He was one of the most revered French bande dessinée authors, and widely considered to be among the funniest there ever was. He created Superdupont (one of the biggest examples of Misaimed Fandom there is, as far-right members actually endorsed a character that was created solely to mock nationalism and patriotism) and the Rubrique-à-brac - a great way to get cracked ribs from laughing too much.
If you wanted one reason to like him - he is the man who helped the Monty Python to become famous in France, because he liked their humor so much (he promoted their earilest movie by drawing the posters of the French versions, among others).
Florence Henderson, known to many as Carol Brady on The Brady Bunch, dies at age 82.
