The trope is basically "Our universe is the only one that matters (so Status Quo Is God doesn't apply in an Alternate Universe)." However, it winds getting use as just Alternate Universe or For Want Of A Nail in regards to other universes.

The name itself, poignant as it is, really doesn't do anything to make it clear that it's about alternate universes being consequence-free.

Wicks: Adventure Games: Used for multiple endings, which I don't think counts. Adventure Time: Not sure, but I think correct? It's claiming that in one timeline, the heroes must've failed their quest. Age Without Youth: Correct? It's an odd, real-life example. Akashic Records: Just used to mean Alternate Universe. Alone, Together: Incorrect. It's saying that the people in the Alternate Universe aren't the same as in the primary universe, not that it wouldn't matter if they died or not. Alternate Universe: Correct, of course. Literature/Anathem: Not really any context, but the description makes no mentions of an alternate universe. And Another Thing...: Correct Angst? What Angst?: Correct Another Earth: Correct

Of the first 10: 4 correct, 3 incorrect, 2 probably correct, one probably incorrect. I will do more and keep you updated.

"Our universe is the only one that matters (so Status Quo Is God doesn't apply in an Alternate Universe)."

Actually, I wouldn't be so quick to say this is the definition. The description is rather confusing (and also rather bloated).

That's true. It's just the definition I got based on the redirects, quote, laconic, and on-page examples. But you bring up a good point. Either way, the description should be clarified.

The trope seems to be that consequences don't matter in alternate universes because it doesn't affect our universe. It's sort of the opposite of Save Both Worlds, because who cares about the other universes? It won't affect anyone in this universe. It's like nationalism for a universe. That is why we are Universe A. Either way, this could use a rename. I don't get the current name.

It's named after a short story that pointed it out.

It has a short article on Wikipedia: All the Myriad Ways I don't think a trope should have the same name as a work. The story shares an interesting bit of philosophy, but the doesn't help illustrate the trope to the uninformed. And if we don't even have a page for a work, we can't expect anyone to be familiar with it or understand the name.

Which is why tropes named after works are trouble.

Excellent Adventure is another one I'd look into.

So this trope is basically "What Measure Is A parallel dimension", similar to What Measure Is a Non-Human? etc?

Seems like so.

Indeed. That's a possible name, or at least a working title. It's surprisingly fitting.

Also, I agree that Excellent Adventure needs a rename for the same reason as this.

I agree with renaming, and repurposing this name with a page for the actual work.

(edit) and yes, Excellent Adventure also needs a rename. Aside from the reasons above, it's a 24-year-old movie and I doubt most people now would understand what the title means.

I agree with a rename, but I disagree with repurposing this page - it's in the wrong namespace.

Yeah, that's true. It could perhaps redirect, I think we have many works where the main namespace redirects to the proper namespace. I don't consider this a very high priority.

Literature. All The Myriad Ways is the one we want.

The current page will likely be cutlisted.

What Measure Is Another Dimension or somesuch could work. Not terribly great due to the snowclone but definitely better than current.

Yeah, it is a snowclone, but it's not shoehorned. It applies very well and explains the trope laconically.

I kind of oppose it as it has a completely different alphabetization.

There are actually 5 redirects already, mostly unused. They are all better than the current.

Nice, except the "Anyone Can Die" snowclone, because that's a wholly different trope.

I think it's time for a rename crowner. Oh, and since the description is unclear, I rewrote it in All The Myriad Ways.

I like Expendable Alternate Universe.

Obviously I'm for a rename.

[up]Awesome. Go with Expendable Alternate Universe. It's way shorter than the Stargate SG-1 Trope Namer I had in mind.

Crowner. I already hollered for a hook. I grouped the snowclone families into single votes, since the differences are mostly trivial and can be decided later, if that is voted for.

And I just opened a thread on Excellent Adventure.
