Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Does Death By Sex extend to those who pleasure themselves?

That wouldn't be the same trope even if it involved two characters. The trope is more about a death flag than a direct consequence.

Could someone take a look at these examples from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay:

  • Doomed Hometown: While it's revealed in the previous film, Katniss gets to visit what remains of District 12 for the first time after the Capitol's bombing. It goes as well as you'd expect. Weirdly, her own home in the Victor's Village is left intact.note

  • Break the Haughty: As per the book, the Capitol citizens get more than enough share of misery throughout the film, thanks to the war waged against their hometown. Sure, they aren't evil as much as they are ignorant, but you can't help to take a hidden delight at seeing them having to experience in one go what the district citizens have experienced for the past 75+ years. Specifically, they're forced to beg for food for once, having to evade a war zone, and finally, watching their children being blown to bits by bombs.

[up]The first is missing context. It is Doomed Hometown only if it gets destroyed at the beginning of the adventure to motivate the hero.

Second one sounds wrong. It applies a character trope to a community. But I think it is technically good. Also "can't help to take" —> "can't help but take".

Could someone take a look at these examples from Future Quest:

  • Art Shift: Characters not designed by Alex Toth were redesigned to unify the comic's art style.

  • Shared Universe: The action heroes are part of a multiverse, though it is shown that Jonny Quest, Birdman and Mightor exist in the same Earth.

They both seem like they're right, but they're worded very oddly. I don't know the series, so I can't offer any improvements.

Can Crystal Dragon Jesus apply to non-Christian religions? I'm specifically thinking of Kill Six Billion Demons, which is clearly inspired by Hinduism, but at the same time is not trying to actually be Hinduism.

Well, the description and some of the examples indicate that it's applicable to Islam, a fellow Abrahamic faith to Christianity. No idea on whether it's applicable to Judaism or non-Abrahamic faiths, though.

The trope description very clearly says that snarking at your employer is the primary criteria. So I am guessing no.

Servile Snarker works with the somewhat contradictory idea of snarking at someone who can fire you for doing exactly that. Otherwise it's just snarking.

[up]That's irrelevant to the trope. Permission or whether the target wants it doesn't matter to Accidental Pervert. The important part is that it's unintentional on the part of the character the trope is for.

This is related to examples on Critical Role: Vox Machina, but is also a general query.

An Ice Person and Playing with Fire are used for characters with powers based on those elements or at lest uses weaponry heavily based on those (like Mr. Freeze or Heatwave), so that so could say that they're themed on those elements.

I have two things I want clarified about those (and, by extension, other specific Elemental Powers based tropes).

1) I've seen them used on character pages for people who have a variety of elemental spells. For example, most D&D wizards can cast ice storm. Would that wizard count as An Ice Person, evne though he probably has chain lightning and fireball as well? I could see it, but just wondering if it would be better to just use Elemental Powers, for characters who don't lean towards a specific type.

2) I've also seen them used if a character uses a sword that deals cold damage or if character sometimes uses flaming arrows. To me, this seems to be better served by Elemental Weapon. I don't think someone like Drizz't would be considered An Ice Person.

For we shall slay evil with logic...

[up][up]Falling into consensual sex would negate the pervert part of accidental pervert.

[up]My guesses are: (1) You need the wizard to clearly prefer the element to be an ice person etc. (2) Yeah, elemental powers are super powers. Unless the weapon is the superpower granting type, you either have to be a wizard or the scifi equivalent.

So... if they're at home, and he tripped and accidentally groped her, it would count?

Falling into consensual sex would negate the pervert part of accidental pervert.
... How the hell would that even work? It would require incredible luck to unintentionally align himself such that the... uh, insertion process goes without a hitch.

Well, there are types...

This is the wrong thread for this conversation. Suffice it to say, groping, and, well, seeing stuff fall in the same category as going all the way. So the same rules apply. All such activities can be perverted, and are fine under some circumstances.

But the important part is marriage and dating are not where the line is drawn here between acceptable and unacceptable behaviour. So being married to the 'victim' may not make the act stop being perverted.

I'm trying to work out of the world of Safehold falls under Crapsack World, False Utopia, or something else entirely.

Any actual entry I do will be considerably more condensed as needed, but here a full scale rundown for the sake of identifying the right trope:

The planet Safehold is the last human colony, Old Terra and the rest of humanity having been destroyed by the alien Gbaba. The plan had been to temporarily eschew advanced technology to avoid attracting the Gbaba by their emissions then, once the of being actively sought out was deemed gone, to begin advancing again. Unfortunately a faction of those heading this mission believed the Gbaba were divine punishment for man's hubris and used their position to set up a Path of Inspiration with themselves as archangels, brainwashing the colonists into believing the day they woke up on Safehold was the literal Day of Creation.

Nearly a millennium later, the Archangels are gone, the Path of Inspiration has become a Corrupt Church which enforces the Medieval Stasis the Archangels envisioned without knowing why and, in the process of starting a war with the protagonist nation of Charis, have unleashed atrocity after atrocity against any potential opposition.

The main case against a Crapsack World is that, so far, the Charisians have been winning the war quite handily, thanks to a survivor from the old Terran Federation helping jump start their technological development and the acknowledgement of their own honorable and relatively decent actions.

However, it does meet other criteria: A case of the Knight in Shining Armor doing poorly would be a Reformist Vicar who would've been arrested, tortured, and executed as a heretic by the Inquisition had his brother not Mercy Killed him first.

On that note, there are several instances where the mass slaughter of a Charisian or allied forces is done as or suspected to be a mass Mercy Kill to spare them that same fate.

A world where a mass Mercy Kill is actually listed in the series Heartwarming Moments page is at least worth considering for something here.
