Our Next Feature Presentation: The Stuff (10/12)

Join Us Saturday, October 12th @ ~8:00PM (US/EDT) Here: http://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

I have only seen that snippet of it before and nothing else! Could be interesting. I read a review that tore into it and said it was awful.

Meanwhile (this is a Vimeo, not a You Tube link), check out this trailer for a movie that's trying to be Kickstarted: https://vimeo.com/64607494

It's the Maradonia Saga, a book series written by a teenage author and published and heavily promoted by her parents. Now it doesn't just have a book trailer, but a movie trailer with higher production values. It actually looks like it falls into that perfect riffable territory, where it does just enough things right to be enjoyable, and enough things wrong to laugh at it. A shame it failed to reach its Kickstarter goal (or go anywhere near it).

Didn't we watch a video about those books once?

Yup. What we saw was the "book trailer", promoting the books with awful acting and zero-budget special effects.

However, there's a more recent trailer for an actual movie they want to make. This one showcases more of a budget and improved acting. Not particularly good, but a big improvement on the "book trailer".

[up][up][up]For a moment there, I read 'Maradona' instead of 'Maradonia'.

Seriously, a Diego Maradona saga would be so much fun. Especially the later years.

Oh yeah, I just remembered. Gloria Tesch herself, the writer of the books, is the lead actress in the movie.

[up][up]I recall somebody else outside the United States making the exact same remarks, last time these books were brought up, and I still very much concur.

"Maradona Adventures" would make one hell of a children's book series.

Anyway, tonight we're rolling out the movie that dares to combine survival horror video games with The RingStay Alive.

Spoiler Alert! In the end, the game is launched from the Steam Workshop at full price and is terribly broken and unpatched.

EDIT: And that Kickstarter video OWNS!

[up][up]We haven't even begun tonight, and you're already winning points! Goddammit, why couldn't I had thought of that one?

Anyway, here we go now! First up, there's madcatlady, more of Bad Influence, and a collective examination of dreams of Maradona—I mean, Dreams of Maradonia's'' attempt at a Kickstarter Video.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, we're all about survival horror video games so much that we put a survival horror video game in our survival horror movie so we can play survival horror while we watch— Blah, we're watching Stay Alive.

So what do we got here tonight? Ah, Grand Theft Auto V: The Movie... Oh, wait, this is some other shallow, mean-spirited view of modern American culture masquerading as "meaningful satire".

We give you... God Bless America, directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, which I don't find all that surprising, except I kinda do.

That's quite the first name, Bobcat.

Unlike GTA, which is made in Scotland, this movie is American in origin, so it's closer to its content.

Speaking of Bobcat Goldthwait, how about his directorial debut, Shakes The Clown, which a friend of my dad called the worst movie he'd ever seen?

It's not that good, but it does have a fine turn by Tom Kenny - yes, that Tom Kenny - as the villain.

I liked that movie. Total of ★ and 3 people walked out on it. Yes, it's corny and unsubtle, and slow. I dunno, I found it more fun the time we watched it in the Coven than the first time I saw it.

Btw, here's the GIF I made from Kidd Video. Such awful animation. How on earth does anyone make an animation flub like that?

It wasn't exactly corny... It was just angry—all hot air and stormy winds and a gigantic fuss about everything. All the while, its two lead characters become an even more shallow, vapid, despicable waste product of the very modern culture they rail against. Perhaps that's the point, but I still think it's stupid.

At least Joel Schumacher's Falling Down had Robert Duvall to perfectly counterweight Michael Douglas's unhinged everyman.

[up]Meet the Feebles was still worse, I think. Much worse. People walked out of that due to being offended. Here, two people walked out due to being bored. A shame, as I didn't find the movie boring at all.

[up][up][up]You're right, it is a lot of anger. The movie seems to be constantly saying, "Don't you hate these kinds of people? Don't you wish you could just kill them? Yeah, that's what I thought." More could have been done with the premise. I did like the satirical TV shows. I wish they'd gone further with the actual elements of satire. Put more actual comedy in it.

Personally I'd call it a Revenge Flick which exaggerated how annoying people are, rather than how bad crime is, to supply its Asshole Victims.

It isn't really accurate to call it a "revenge movie", either. It was more like a Batman comic that was all Joker and no Batman. Man snaps under the weight of this world's insanity, decides to value nothing and drag the rest of society down with him in a violent, chaotic bloodbath... However, there's no counterbalancing figure who also sees the world and human nature as being terribly flawed but sets out a different, more constructive path to rise above it all and promote positive change.

Anyway, in other news... Tonight we roll out Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie.

Somebody shoot me now.
