A brief reminiscence about the worst moment in someone's life.

Cima spoke quietly. "When we killed billions, gassed the colonies, were the Earth Federation Space Forces cowed?" For a moment she recalled her own reaction, after that mission had been over. She and the three other pilots from her unit who'd delivered the warheads had been in a room with the rest of their unit. And everyone, even those not involved in the colony gassings, had been sitting there, with their sidearm out like they meant to clean it. Just staring at the gun, thinking very seriously about whether this was what they had signed up for and struggling to reconcile duty, honor, humanity, and sanity. After a moment she answered her own questions. "No. They were resolved to stop us. They fought like madmen. Federation fighters rammed our mobile suits even when undamaged, sacrificing themselves by the dozen to ensure a couple of Zakus died. Federation warships would self-destruct when our Zakus got in close, to at least take a few enemies with them. They took seventy percent losses, and they never broke. Not a single one of them ever tried to run. Even at the end, with their fighter screens destroyed and their ordnance expended, they maintained their formations and retreated in good order rather than letting us cut them up as they routed. And we were hurt too badly to finish them off." She spitted Noruff with a glare. "Too many people already see the fight to destroy us as a crusade. We can't encourage that further."

...this. THIS. [lol]

I'm finding such weird shit. The weirdest probably being Zeon women as Sailor Senshi.

Kycilia = Sailor Moon

Lalah = Sailor Solomon

Haman = Sailor Axis

Cecilia = Sailor A Baoa Qu

If you forgot, Cecilia is supposed to be Gihren's private secretary and/or lover.

Then there's Cat!Garma for Kycilia and Cat!Char for Haman.

Found on Spacebattles, in an old quest.

Which do you guys think would be better for OYW!Char, the Galbaldy or the Dowadge?

I don't remember what either of those are.

The Galbaldy was supposed to be the Gyan's successor but when the Gyan got canned, the Galbaldy was quickly retooled to use Gelgoog parts. It's kinda like a hybrid of the two with the Gelgoog's rifle and shield and the Gyan's sword, but superior to both. Very few were rolled out before the OYW ended; the battle of A Baoa Qu had a grand total of one Galbaldy participating - and according to the Gundam wiki, Tomino actually intended for Char to pilot this thing in the OYW before the TV series' shortening forced him to scrap it and go with the Zeong. After the OYW, the Titans grabbed the Galbaldy's design and gave it a refit before pushing it into service. Jerid's first love interest Lila flies a refit Galbaldy in Zeta - so the Galbaldy would basically be an early Zeta-era MS in the OYW and accordingly a powerhouse for its age.

The Dowadge is also a very late OYW-era suit; we don't even know if it saw any actual combat. Basically, it's a Rick Dom specced for close combat: spikes, more engines, better Chest Blaster (a full-sized beam cannon instead of a glorified flashbang) and a Musai battleship's deck gun stripped down into a beam bazooka. Oh, and it's gunpla was available in Char colors.

...I think I can see Char more likely in a Dowadge.

Both are Pezun Project suits, available earlier than described, developmental models rather than production. The Galbady was a competing project to the Gyan and Gelgoog that wasn't ready in time; its mix of weaponry is a result of the fact that development of their own weapons was cancelled before it could begin. While it would have undoubtedly been easier to use than the Gelgoog, it probably wouldn't have been any better. The Titans-era Galbady Beta is a downgraded model, considered a cheap suit of low performance, and outmatched by even a Gelgoog.

The Dwadge/Dowadge, not to be confused with the Pezun Dowadge as we seem to have done, is basically a Rick Dom Kai, including a variety of small improvements (though the described beam weapons do not exist; by Zeta it does pack a Rick Dias' beam pistol). The Pezun Dowadge has the described weaponry, and seems to have been a Dom variant reaction to the beamsaber armed GM, but didn't know what it wanted to be either with heavy weaponry as well. (It's a dogfighter! No! It's an antiship strike suit!) It seems to be a solution in search of a problem.

I didn't confuse the two. I meant the Pezun one. I was asking because I was wondering what alternatives could Char use instead of the Zeong in order to drive canon Off the Rails in my Peggy Sue!Amuro fic (when I start writing it).

Current plan is that, during the skirmish were Lalah died in canon, Amuro, Lalah and Char get into a Newtype battle of wills. In the ensuing mental crossfire, Char, being the weakest Newtype of the three, suffers a Mind Rape that basically causes him to be possessed by his CCA self. While his Newtype potential is untouched, the combination of a new suit, years of combat experience against highly evasive opponents and a renewed conviction to defeat Amuro once and for all causes Char to become extremely dangerous. So dangerous, in fact, that he almost manages to roll over Amuro at A Baoa Qu, despite Amuro having the NT-1.

Almost, that is; turns out some sneaky chucklefuck installed an EXAM System into the NT-1 without Amuro's knowledge, thinking that using it on someone who's already a Newtype should improve its effects. Amuro's anger at Char just not getting it causes the System to spontaneously activate and drive Amuro into a berserk rampage across A Baoa Qu. Imagine an NT-D that targets not just Newtypes but everyone. But that's not all: the System is essentially forcibly merging their souls all the while, which would destroy both and render Amuro braindead. Oh, and it also supercharges Amuro's Newtype senses so much that he can actively sense every single death on the battlefield. Amuro eventually musters enough willpower to shove the EXAM's soul away and force the System to disengage, but he very narrowly avoids going insane from it, despite having had decades to get used to his Newtype senses.

Normally, Amuro would avoid the NT-1 like the plague from that point onward... but his superiors are having none of it, having seen footage of EXAM!Amuro in action and concluding that it's a perfect match for him. He can't do anything about it and even if he could, those in charge would just throw somebody else into the cockpit for the EXAM System to feast upon. So Amuro has no choice but to suck it up and keep piloting the NT-1 in order to keep the EXAM System away from everyone else. That's not his only reason, though: thanks to the Newtype mind-merge, Amuro now knows what the EXAM System really is and is secretly trying to find a way to release the soul in it, but needs access to the NT-1 for that.

And before anyone asks: yes, the Titans do try to mass-produce the EXAM System, figuring that EXAM System + disposable Cyber-Newtype = extremely effective kamikaze weapon. It's kinda like this:

  • 1. Give someone a knife.
  • 2. Pump him full of PCP.
  • 3. Sic him on a crowd of people and watch him go on a killing spree before keeling over dead.

Ironically, I'm also thinking about Amuro having the Alex at A Bao A Qu, but the result is that he more or less wrecks Char without effort.

The real question to my mind is what that means for Sayla, who's likely to end up with the Gundam.

What is the EXAM system, exactly?

amitakartok Since: Feb, 2010 Relationship Status: Don't hug me; I'm scared
#1387: Oct 1st 2015 at 3:17:27 PM

[up]A performance-enhancing system designed by a Zeon scientist. In its original form, it's a two-seater cockpit that uses a Newtype co-pilot's brainwaves to crank up an Oldtype pilot's fighting ability to Newtype levels. It's basically a Newtype emulator. The scientist who designed it hated Newtypes because he felt they would make Oldtypes obsolete, hence he wanted to weaponize them.

Thing is, the system malfunctioned, sucked out the Newtype co-pilot's soul and trapped her inside the machine. When the EXAM system is activated, it causes her to take control of the mobile suit and drive it berserk. Think mobile suit version of an Eva with a dummy plug, except each instancenote  of the EXAM shares the same soul. As long as even one instance exists, the soul is in constant agony and lashes out every time the System is activated; only destroying every EXAM System in existence will free her - but at least one Zeon ace (Nimbus Schterzen) actively hunts all other EXAM users, as he believes he has been "chosen" by the System and only he is worthy to wield it in combat.

[up][up][up]You know, I haven't thought about Sayla either.

I mean, Kai and Hayato still got Amuro's back. Especially Kai, since Amuro made sure Kai's Zeon girlfriend survived. Whether Sleggar lives or not is still up for grabs.

What is certain is that, after the clusterfuck in the Far East, the 08th MS Team of the Kojima Battalion are sent to Jaburo for the duration of Shiro's trial. In the end, Shiro gets demoted and relieved of command in favor of Karen, plus the entire team getting reassigned to Bright's command.

Naturally, Karen and Eledore are extremely skeptical of Amuro when they finally meet the legendary White Devil face to face and find out he's "just a kid". As for the others, Shiro is currently too busy angsting to care, Mitchell has a minor case of hero worship towards Amuro after looking at his combat record and Sanders is neutral on the issue, saying that they're gonna have to watch Amuro's back regardless of whether he's a kid or not.

Once the White Base returns to space and is about to engage an enemy MS force, Karen sees the Gundam Dual Wielding beam rifles on the launch catapult; she promptly does a Face Palm and mutters that flashy amateur stuff like that is going to get everybody killed...

...only for Amuro to completely wipe the floor with the Zeeks all by himself in a display of dual-wielded marksmanship that would put the Strike Freedom to shame. The 08th pretty much gets to do nothing but gawk, partly because Amuro is blowing the Zakus up faster than the others can target them. Oh, and Amuro deals with the final Zaku by shooting off its legs to send it tumbling away out of control, then putting away one beam rifle, grabbing the Zaku before it can stabilize itself, using the Gundam as a counterweight to swing the Zaku and physically toss it at the Musai that launched the attacking force, then coring the Zaku's reactor with a single shot, the explosion killing the Musai as well. Just like that.

Needless to say, the 08th learns a valuable lesson that day: do NOT fuck with the White Devil, for he's WAY higher in the food chain than you are.

While Zeon was weaponizing Newtypes they also tried to create something to deal with one gone rogue. EXAM is describing to them as such a system. If you were to picture a combination of Unicorn's NewType-Destroyer system, and a Mass Effect VI (a program so well-designed it looks as though it's intelligent, but it actually isn't), you'd have something close to EXAM. It's designed for the use of Oldtype pilots, and what it does is interface with their brains, boost their reaction times and reflexes to Newtype levels, and in effect transmit false information to Newtypes in the area. The goal was just to make their precognition not work but the actual result is described as like psychic jamming to a powerful Newtype; nails on a chalkboard in your head, or your brain in a blender. Intense pain and difficulty accomplishing even relatively simple tasks. The process that does this uses the pilot's brain as a broadcast device, so it's not really good for them either, and tends to cause berserk episodes.

The truth is slightly different. The EXAM system's designer wasn't that good with programming, but he was a different kind of mad scientist. The kind who stole equipment and even a person from another project rather than admit he couldn't program for shit, digitized the soul of the person he stole (killing her in the process) and turned her into the supposed program at the core of the EXAM system. The psychic static effect is caused by the EXAM broadcasting her through another person's mind; things that were never meant to be. The reason the pilot's reflexes go up is because he's effectively a Newtype-by-proxy using her powers. The berserk episodes are her going nuts.

Kycilia Zabi nearly found out, prompting the creator of the system to defect to the EF and take the plans with him, leaving Zeon with only one EXAM suit. The EF only built three, before Zeon managed to assassinate the guy. Blue Destiny Unit 01 and the EXAM Efreet mutual-killed, Zeon stole Unit 02 so Unit 03 was sent to get it back, but again both were destroyed. With its creator dead and all functioning units destroyed, there was no way to untangle the parts of the EXAM that were from the original mandate of the project and the parts that were Powered by a Forsaken Child, the Federation did not pursue further development.

And I just found out that, in one of the Gundam video games, there's a what-if scenario where the EXAM's designer is caught when he tries to defect and Zeon mass-produces the EXAM system for the Gyan.

Here's a weird question: Yazan Gable is occasionally stated to have been a Federation MS pilot during the OYW; never in animation, but a couple other places suggest it. Apolly is also stated to be a OYW vet and even an ace, though being born in 0063 officially he would have been only 16 at the time (based on that it seems likely if he saw action, he was a rookie in a Zaku at A Bao A Qu).

But if Apolly is really a Zeon ace, does that mean it's possible a 16-year-old Emma Sheen was piloting a Ball for Solomon and/or A Bao A Qu?

So, Emma is a techie? Since, AFAIK, in combat, the role Ball could fill with any competence is being sniper. Lousy sniper.

Granted, when you have like, 1000 Balls lined up with auto cannons, then you'll not laughing anymore.

And, to be fair, Balls should have some capabilities as combat engineer, too.

[up]Hey, Shiro Amada managed to Mutual Kill a Zaku II (unless Aina was piloting some kind of prototype, which arguably makes it even more impressive) in the first episode of 08th MS Team.

If Shiro can make something half-decent out of a Ball, I wouldn't be surprised if Emma could do it too.

And Shiro, from what I read, sounds like a Mc Gyver if Mac lives in UC and don't hesitates to use gun. I mean, he makes a patchwork Gundam from an underwhelming prototype, military surplus, scraps, military surplus scraps, and maybe lots of duct tape. And it works better than it's number suggest.

Or maybe he just have a lot experience with Ball.

Eh, Ball's a classic use of the theory that to make an effective combat unit, you have to be able to hurt the other guy. Nothing more, nothing less.

Their survival rate still seems to have been way above Tin Cods and Saberfish.

You don't have to do it, you know. Crossovers tend to do best kept small.

Meanwhile... GUNDAM FANFICTION THREAD! I REQUIRE YOUR OPINIONS!

Garma Zabi is the most decent of his family.

But he's still a Zabi. Certain things come with the territory.

The others left the room. Garma gestured to Cima to follow him, and they stepped into a sideroom, windless. "I had this room swept for listening devices while the meeting was ongoing." Garma said softly. "I know you are not one of Gihren's faithful, so I have a task for you. It is in the strictest confidence." He paused. "If Gihren finds out, I may not be able to protect you, Commander."

Cima looked at him for a long moment. "Understood, sir." It didn't seem to require anything else. Yet.

"I cannot directly act to rebuke my brother. The Federation can."

This conversation couldn't be real, Cima thought. She was hallucinating. That was probably why she was so calm about it. "Sir, you can't possibly be suggesting what I think you are suggesting."

"Earth is my responsibility. Yet my family sees fit to interfere at every turn. There are units like M'Quve's or Sahalin's outside my jurisdiction in critical operational areas. We knew South-East Asia would be important in the planning stage. We knew it would resist. And in violation of basic principles of armed combat, it was given to a commander out of my control. Australia and Indonesia are bleeding us dry because I cannot give orders to Sahalin. I don't dare send my naval forces south of Java yet because I can't stage heavy air assets from nearby due to a lack of secure bases. Whose fault is that?" Garma's question was rhetorical. "Sahalin should never have been given a combat command. He simply doesn't have the interest. Packard does what he can but he can't make it hold Sahalin's attention. Instead lives and equipment are spent every day teaching a lesson about unity of command that people of such rarefied rank should already know."

Cima swallowed. "Sir...this conversation is heading in a direction I'm not comfortable with."

Garma chuckled. There was an edge of desperation to it. "You think I am? Gihren's plans to cow the Federation make them fight so much harder, and he kills billions or millions of people. I've known from childhood he's devoid of any kind of human feelings. My brother is a monster, and I move against him not from choice but of necessity. He would destroy everything I hold dear, from the nation of Zeon to this planet, in all its wonder and beauty." Garma smiled, or tried to, but it came out a rictus grin under the stress of the moment. "My family would accuse me of ideological apostasy and worse to hear this. But Earth is humanity's home...and no matter how perfect the recreation, no matter how hard we believe in Deikun, we will never be entirely whole anywhere else. Gihren would destroy it and all humanity if he is allowed to act with a free hand for long enough; he already killed half of humanity. My sister and my father struggle constantly to hold him in check. It is time I join the fight. Will you help me?"

Cima stood there, silent; struck dumb. A thousand thoughts swirled through her head. But one in particular seemed more important. I'm going to get the bastard who told me that the G3 warheads were loaded with sedative. Not Gihren directly, but it was improbable that Gihren had no responsibility at all even if Garma was as good at lying as he claimed his brother to be.

"What are your orders, sir?"
