Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.
This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.
Common problems include:
- Conversation on the Main Page
- Flame Bait
- Squicky content
- Impossible in Real Life
Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.
If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.
If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.
Before adding to the crowner:
- The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
- There must be support from others in thread.
- Any objections should be addressed.
- Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.
When adding to the crowner:
- Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
- Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
- An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).
In order for a crowner to pass:
- Must have been up for a minimum of a week
- There must be a 2:1 ratio
- If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
- Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
- Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page
Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need a crowner vote.
As per Real Life Troping, we never trope unscripted real life sports — so sports tropes where RL examples would only apply to those scenarios don't need a crowner vote.
Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.
After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

Notes:
- This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
- Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
- As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
- The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

Added Four-Temperament Ensemble, because this is more of a characterization device than anything of actual use, and the RL examples just looked pretty bad.

I now go by Graf von Tirol. The government shutdown one might also hit rule of cautious editing judgement issues, at least at the current time.
Is there a place to park a warning not to use "Other" or "Truth in Television" folders as end-runs around NRLEPed articles? They aren't common-common, but that's not the first time I've noticed them since joining last year, and it bugs me.
Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving. -Terry PratchettThe Four-Temperament Ensemble RL examples smell like shoehoring. "Let's find a random group of people and apply a trope to them with duct tape!"
Well, I've already voted it up at any rate.

Check out my fanfiction!Well you should always be on the lookout for RL examples going in another folder. Another somewhat common one is if the trope applies to a creator, it will be found under the folder for whatever media that creator creates. Keep a look out for this type of thing when cutting RL examples. Not sure where a warning would go though.
I was thinking of it as a CEJ issue
Is there no warning on the No Real Life Examples Please page itself?
The child is father to the man —OedipusBeen more than two days now (I wonder if we're all using UTC but I am). Calling Four-Temperament Ensemble.
Heh, nice. And yes, it's Pacific.

I now go by Graf von Tirol. The time on the crowner listings is server time, which I believe is US West Coast (Pacific Time, I think it's called).
Yeah, we go by server time, just to cut down on the hassles of figuring out what time at what point on the plenet.
Anyway, new crowner (will holler for swap after I post this).
All your safe space are belong to TrumpI have submitted Dragon Lady to the crowner. Since it is basically a Distaff Counterpart to Yellow Peril (Which is already part of the NRLEP list), the same badness that trope had applies to this one too: It's a Villain Trope and it stereotypes Asian women.

"Suffer a vicious person and you will fear vice. Suffer a virtuous one and you will soon loathe virtue itself." Tony DuvertThe new crowner's hooked and the thread title's updated.
Some of the RL dragon ladies may fit on Historical Villain Upgrade. But they don't belong on Dragon Lady.
Check out my fanfiction!Voted up Sweater Girl because I can't think of a way for the RL section to be more than "she has big tits," which is a different trope. A couple of different tropes, come to think of it.
The child is father to the man —OedipusAdding Pretty Boy for your consideration.
It's a beauty/attraction trope which invites gushing and adding Zero Context Examples of young good-looking men that editors think are cute. Just have a look at Music and Real life folders.
I brought this up in zero context clean-up thread and Madrugada pointed out that it's also a character type. Real life examples would be shoe-horned then.
Russia Iran Disco Suck is overly political, if the section is kept it should be limited to dead issues.
The child is father to the man —Oedipusand I agree.
Taking a closer look, I think that all of Russia Iran Disco Suck's current Real Life examples are ongoing highly contentious issues, and should be removed.
Edit 2: It is not People Sit On Chairs in Real Life, because such comparisons generally have rhetorical importance. However, I still think it should be cut for the reasons given above.

That trope is a freaking mess that needs a visit to the Trope Repair Shop ASAP. In the meantime, I can certainly support cutting the real life section on grounds of being Flame Bait.
Honestly, that RL section is so bad that I feel like we should rope it off and set it up as an exhibit of what not to do. (Okay, I'm being slightly sarcastic, but only slightly). Nuke it.
My alignment is Chaotic Cute.I don't know if Handsome Lech is bad enough to require a full NRLEP or not. But I just cleaned it up a little bit, (first step was changing the folder name from "Truth in Television?" to "Real Life".) taking out ZCE's Bill Clinton and Hugh Hefner. The other three at least have some context, but it appears that for the most part it's being used for "these have a reputation for being real players". Which is sort of what the trope is, but not completely.
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Russia Iran Disco Suck is a sociopolitical essay masquerading as a trope. Does it even happen in fiction enough to warrant notice? I see four media examples and a ton of RL ones. It desperately needs surgery.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"My opinion is, considering the point of the site, if the RL section is bigger then the media section, then there's a problem right there.
Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving. -Terry PratchettHandsome Lech is one of those that I would say is chairs when there's no author, which I believe consensus on the wiki holds there is not in Real Life.
The child is father to the man —OedipusCalling:
- Sweater Girl - Added 16th Oct '13 at 12:02:30 AM, 17:0
- Dragon Lady - Added 16th Oct '13 at 04:54:16 AM, 16:0
FYI, I've submitted a Cut List request for Russia Iran Disco Suck. So the vote on NRLEP for it may be moot.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"What the hell is Russia Iran Disco Suck ?

New theme music also a box
The Krugman one looks okay to me. It's got the starting step and the end step, but something does appear to be missing in the middle. The Hennessy Tweet one is not an example; it isn't missing anything. There was no middle step in the plan — it was a simple two-step plan: 1) The Republicans shut down the government, 2) the Democrats cave on the ACA to get things running again. There wasn't anything that needed to be in between them that's missing.
