This thread is for general discussion of page quotes, whether to change, move or remove them.

Unused quotes should be put on a Quotes Wiki page (just replace the namespace in the URL of the wiki page you are making a quotes page for with Quotes/) or, if they don't have an article, on Quotes Looking for an Article.

The quote for Slimeball briefly mentions the trope, before turning into a long list of animal facts and a threat to bite somebody's head off.

Both [up] and [up][up] don't work, I vote for pulling them.

I agree about the Heartbreak and Ice Cream quote. I can understand it, but it's weak and heavily reliant on cultural context.

Heartbreak and Ice Cream: I'd wait to see if more than one person didn't get that joke before pulling it on the grounds of obscure cultural context. (It's a British novel referring to an American brand before you're even off the starting blocks...)

[up]The Real Life section offers some explanation of the cultural context.

[up] That you have to dig into the examples list just to provide context for the page topper quote makes it a bad page topper quote. Page topper quotes should illustrate the trope without having to look elsewhere for context.

[up]It's not deliberately providing context without which the quote is meaningless, though. It just happens to refer back to the joke in a way that, if you didn't get it, would be helpful.

[up][up]Did you get it at first, or did you need the context? I'm interested in establishing how obscure the line actually is, rather than talking about hypothetical people maybe not getting it, which you could say about any joke.

Racing the Train has two quotes. I'm thinking the first one should go. What do you guys think?

Keep the second quote.

I didn't get Heartbreak and Ice Cream's quote until I looked at the examples -and only after I read here that there was a reference in the examples. I think it needs fixing.

On Video Games: Other ,there doesn't appear to be a page quote. I figured Jim Sterling's opinion on Digital Homicide would be a decent addition. Any suggestions?

I think, given the nature of that page, we'd want to avoid have an page quote that specifically called any single case out.

Doubly so since there's an currently ongoing lawsuit between said company and Jim Sterling. I'm reeeeeeal leery of touching that matter with a twenty-foot pole, even on Darth Wiki.

Leave that page without a quote.

Machiavelli's page needs a good quote: Lord Gro deleted one by a reader who quoted Bane quoting Machiavelli in Injustice: Gods Among Us

I propose this quote by Machiavelli himself: “When evening comes, I return home and go into my study. On the threshold I strip off my muddy, sweaty, workday clothes, and put on the robes of court and palace, and in this graver dress I enter the antique courts of the ancients and am welcomed by them, and there I taste the food that alone is mine, and for which I was born. And there I make bold to speak to them and ask the motives of their actions, and they, in their humanity, reply to me. And for the space of four hours I forget the world, remember no vexation, fear poverty no more, tremble no more at death: I pass indeed into their world.”

I propose this other alternative from Discourses on Livy:

Anyone who studies present and ancient affairs will easily see how in all cities and all peoples there still exist, and have always existed, the same desires and passions. Thus, it is an easy matter for him who carefully examines past events to foresee future events in a republic and to apply the remedies employed by the ancients, or, if old remedies cannot be found, to devise new ones based upon the similarity of the events. But since these matters are neglected or not understood by those who read, or, if understood, remain unknown to those who govern, the result is that the same problems always exist in every era.

The quote in One True Threesome doesn't seem to come from any source. I kinda like the one from Causality Spoof in the subpage, but maybe someone has a better option?

[up] Either The Casualty Spoof or Girl Genius works for me.

Non-Uniform Uniform has two quotes. The second one just has a brief mention of it during an otherwise unrelated Badass Boast, while the first quote feels just a tad long to me. I prefer this EGS quote, but maybe it leans a bit too much on the funny instead of actually describing the trope.

  • "I think uniforms are sexy and everything, but what's the point if everyone's wearing the same thing?"

Julian Lapostat, do you seriously think anyone is going to read these gigantoquotes? Any page quote longer than three lines is not doing its job.

Let's just say and leave it at that.

Is this better? It's four lines now, but it's shorter than before and I think it's reader-friendly.

I think it's too long. However, it appears we do not have any rule on how long page quotes can be. Maybe a few tropers in this thread can throw in their opinion.

Let's just say and leave it at that.

Sufficiently Analyzed Magic, Magitek, and Scientifically Understandable Sorcery all have essentially the same quote. (Sufficiently Analyzed Magic, in fact, has it twice, with the Trope Namer in the image.)

Scientifically Understandable Sorcery has other issues, but putting that aside, any ideas on separating these from each other?

I still think the Girl Genius image is completely non-illustrative and redundant to boot but if we have to change a quote, I think one from Thor could work in Magitek.

"Your ancestors called it magic...and you call it science. Well, I come from a place where they're one and the same."
Thor Odinson, Thor

Speaking of, am I the only one that thinks the current quote in Big Brother Instinct is kinda dumb? I just feel it doesn't work for some reason.

Also, Are You Pondering What I'm Pondering? has the same quote twice. The first time as the main quote and the second when explaining the name of the trope.
