YMMV / Voltes V: Legacy

Go To

Subpages:

The rest:

  • Arc Fatigue: The Steve-Jamie-Mark-Eva love triangle that begins in episode 4 and isn't properly resolved until episode 83, dominating most of the show's filler and slice of life episodes. By the time it was over most fans had dropped the show.
  • Awesome Music: Julie Ann San Jose's performance of the theme song, "Voltes V no Uta", gives off a modern and remastered feel of the original theme song. The Japanese fandom who watched the original anime seem to give high regards to this version of the opening theme. Oddly, the TV-size opening uses the first four lines of the first verse then uses the third verse and chorus, unlike the TV-size anime opening which only used the first verse and chorus, though a full version of the cover exists.
  • Ascended Fridge Horror: In the original anime, Belgan (Oslak) was a Straw Misogynist who invented a ring that can control women...leading to some uncomfortable implications. Here, he actually attempts to assault Zandra while she's under his influence.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment:
    • The infamous bed scene depicting Zardoz and Zandra nude in bed. Nothing of the sort ever happened in the anime and even those familiar with the original show may be taken aback by their sudden display of horniness.
    • In "Ultra Marcon", several squadrons of jet fighters from Earth's nations were deployed to aid Camp Big Falcon under siege by Namazuka after General Robinson manages to convince the world leaders in his Gondor Calls for Aid request. And yet for some reason in this episode and in "Mysterious Man", the jet fighter squadrons didn't open fire on Namazuka and hold the line until Voltes Team finally gets to Volt-In successfully with Dr. Smith's help, and after Voltes V finishes off the catfish-like Beast Fighter, the squadrons triumphantly fly home with Camp Big Falcon personnel saluting them as if they have contributed something.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
  • Fandom Rivalry: With the fandom of the original anime. They hate Legacy because of the changes made to the source material and view the Adaptation Expansion scenes as unnecessary. Not helping is the flanderization of Heinel and Ippei, and the pointless love triangle. Many fans who also enjoyed Voltes V for the mecha action were disappointed by how Legacy dropped the Monster of the Week format in favor of a longer more drawn-out drama storylinenote .
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Because of the original anime's Sacred Cow status in the Philippines, any attempt of making a Live-Action Adaptation would invariably be met with backlash. Many fans in the Philippines refuse to acknowledge it exists and those who do call it terrible. The hatedom Legacy got was so severe Mark Reyes has responded to them, calling them "bashers".
  • Fan Nickname: Zuhl is sometimes referred to by fans as "Zuhlpy", after his actor Epy Quizon's father Dolphy Quizon, a well-known comedian in the Philippines.
  • Friendly Fandoms: Those who watch Legacy also tend to be fans of Daimos and hope it also gets a live-action adaptation by GMA Network.note  In fact, Legacy's director, Mark Reyes, has expressed a desire to adapt Daimos into a similar live-action show next.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The Manuel Nabuz arc, replacing the anime arc of Katherine (Zandra) and her Paper-Thin Disguise as "Jane". Throughout the arc, they address him as "Kuya Manuel" (Big Bro)...not knowing he actually IS their brother. This becomes a more tragic turn in the finale as the Armstrongs finally accept Zardoz as a brother and even call him "Kuya" ...but only after he's mortally wounded and dying.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • This line from Super Robot Wars 30 hasn't aged well at all considering Legacy has made Steve/Jamie canon.note
    • Decades and multiple generations of shippers of the Heinel and Katharine pairing might have some rather mixed reactions in seeing the infamous bed scene with Zardoz and Zandra. Its presence certainly suggests that one of them ended up as a Writer on Board on Legacy.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Zambojil crosses it after humiliating Hrothgar, taking his crown, telling him his wife and child are dead and killing several revolting slaves for the crime of helping him.
    • Eva crosses it when she orders the assassination of Jamie because she caught Steve's affections, something she had no role in. Also, this is right after Steve lost his own mother.
    • Oslak crosses it after he reveals himself to be an Attempted Rapist.
  • Older Than They Think:
    • The scene where Zandra (Katherine's live-action counterpart) is revealed to be Zardoz's (Prince Heinel's live action counterpart) bedmate isn't the first time Katherine Rii has been used for Fanservice - the anime's official art book Super Electromagnetic Voltes V Information (published 1978, by Tokuma Shouten) featured a nude sketchnote  of her striking a pose with her breasts out, while she was surrounded by roses, illustrated by Voltes V character designer Yuki Hijiri.
    • The concept of Kenichi/Steve having a love interest. According to Yuki Hijiri's notes, in the original anime, Kenichi was to fall in love with a hornless Boazanian woman named Marlene Rii, Katherine's little sister. She was cut out of the final draft, but her concept was re-used for Judalah.
    • The concept of a Phillipine live-action Voltes V. Because the original anime was so popular there, they created a spoof movie called ''Vontes V''
    • Many fans didn't like the adaptational romance between Heinel and Katherine in Legacy. However the Italian dub of the original 1977 anime also changed Heinel into being more overt about his love for Katherine. However, it was done in a way that was more consistent with his characterization.
  • Replacement Scrappy: Ally, Tomas, PJ and Eva are this for the side characters of the original anime, such as Kaori, Nakamura and the puppy. One review noted that their presence felt unearned because they were rather one-note and bland, unlike their teammates at Big Falcon who at least had to sacrifice something to get there.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Emperor Zambojil is played by Christian Vasquez, who first rose to fame in a commercial for PLDT in the early 2000s, where his character's father said in a mixture of Ilonggo and Tagalog, "Kung saan ka masaya te suportahan ta ka" ("I will support you, wherever you are gonna be happy with").
    • Takeo and Arisa are played by Pancho Magno and Kylie Padilla of Encantadia fame. The blooper reel even has Takeo accidentally call Arisa "Amihan", a character from Encantadia.
      • Neil Ryan Sese (Dr. Hook) has previously also appeared in Encantadia, and has also co-starred alongside Raphael Landicho (Little Jon) in several drama series.
    • Steve Armstrong is played by Miguel Tanfelix, who previously had a role in Mulawin as Pagaspas, a young Mulawin character that he played all the way back in 2004 as a child actor which he reprised in 2017 in Mulawin vs. Ravena.
  • Romantic Plot Tumor: One of the issues of the show is the romantic rivalry between Jamie and Eva for Steve's affections, with Mark later joining in to compete with Steve for Jamie's. Some fans find it unnecessary given that Jamie's anime counterpart, Megumi, never ends up with anyone regardless of the Ship Tease and Steve's anime counterpart, Kenichi, is too busy with protecting humanity. It doesn't help that the show's main writer, Suzette Docteloro, is mainly known for writing romantic comedies and dramas of middling qualities. Most of the criticism stems from Legacy's subpar writing and over-reliance on stock soap-opera clichés instead of more natural and subtle relationship development.
  • Sci Fi Ghetto: In an interview with Anime Herald, Voltes V: Legacy director Mark Reyes admits that the Filipino mainstream audiences are more into comedy, romance, horror, and drama. Science fiction is harder to sell to the masses and networks wouldn't accept it. However, Voltes V is an exemption due to the sentimentality and role in Filipino pop culture and the staff had to bank on it to make the live-action series successful.
  • The Scrappy:
    • Mark Gordon because his Jerkass traits have been cranked up to to the point he's unlikable. Even his actor acknowledged Mark's hatedom in an interview, and, on a local news channel, stated that he preferred Ippei.
    • Similarly, Prince Zardoz is disliked for lacking Heinel's dedication, will to fight honourably and stoic demeanor, as Legacy portrays him as a Butt-Monkey who's ready to kill people on the spot for the slightest infraction. A good part of his hate also comes from Heinel fangirls who disliked that he wasn't as attractive as they hoped (remember, Heinel's Draco in Leather Pants treatment has never ended since the The '70s).
    • Eva, a Canon Foreigner who appears to have been added to the show for no other reason than to serve as a generic and very unlikable Alpha Bitch, contributing nothing of value to the story except more tacked on soap opera drama and the already divisive Romantic Plot Tumor. The fact that she never gains even a speck of Character Development does not help.
  • Tainted by the Preview: From the moment Legacy was announced, Filipinos were upset because they didn't have faith in Reyes and Doctoro to properly adapt it. "My Childhood is gone in New Year's Eve." and "It's Zaido: Pulis Pangkalawakan all over again" began trending on Filipino Facebook and Twitter.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Or rather sub-plot in form of the mysterious defense contractor Apable worked for as their corporate espionage agent within Camp Big Falcon on a mission to steal secrets from that base. And yet it was never brought up again after Apable was killed off by Eva to silence him from blowing the whistle on her. Not only that, while there was an investigation on Apable's murder, apparently no one had discovered his affiliation with the defense contractor, just focused on finding the real culprit behind Jamie Robinson's attempted murder. It did not help when Word of God reveals that they never thought of expanding on the defense contractor as they used Apable as an accessory for Eva's schemes, unintentionally creating a loose end.
  • Unexpected Character: After the Beast Fighters were all shown in order of appearance and several were skipped, hardly any expected Suneizaa from Episode 16 to make an appearance in the adaptation after the series skipped straight to Zoldier of Episode 20. Then came the final arc with 10 bonus episodes: and Suneizaa makes a grand comeback as the upgraded Armored Beast Fighter, Zunaizer.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • Zardoz, for his temper tantrums whenever things don't go his way that result in hornless Boazanian servants being killed.
    • Jamie from episode 60 onwards after she claims that Mark is her boyfriendnote . On top of being the pinnacle of an exhaustive Love Triangle that no one asked for, she later admits to Anna that she doesn't love Mark with Mark overhearing her nearby. It's kind of hard to feel sympathetic for someone who straight up admits to playing with a guy's feelings, and later causes him to temporarily abandon Big Falcon. This bites her when she tries to make amends with Mark who coldly tells her to leave him alone and that they're simply professional teammates from now on.
    • Mark is also disliked because some of his actions towards Jamie come off as manipulative, like stating Steve prefers Eva (when in actuality Eva is a Clingy Jealous Girl who pressures Steve to be with her and he's too nice to say no).
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: As stated below, a great chunk of the show's budget was allocated to making the CGI and special effects look good, even by international standards, and the results speak for themselves. The Volt-In sequence is especially polished to a brilliant sheen.
  • Win Back the Crowd: GMA Network actually allocating a huge budget for the special effects and CGI of Voltes V: Legacy while at the same time sticking faithfully to the story beats of the original anime is a refreshing change from the face-flop that was Zaido: Pulis Pangkalawakannote .
  • WTH, Costuming Department?:
    • Prince Zardoz's white collar has caused quite a lot of Narm reactions due to it looking like a cardboard cutout, especially when he's close to the camera.
    • The Boazanian villains all look pretty campy, including the above detail, but in the right hands this would lean into Narm Charm akin to lots of tokusatsu seriesnote . But then the Voltes team's suits follow the "more realistic" live-action superhero design trends, note  this doesn't quite gel with how the villains look.
    • On its own, the suit design looks okay on the older pilots but makes Little Jon look oddly chunky for a kid. Then the cast reveal promo pics had heavily edited images of the Voltes Team's actors wearing armored suits which were much more form-fitting, and the real suits were only seen after trailers with live-action footage came out.
