"Cancho ayta!"Explanation An unexplained Boazanian word commonly used as an expletive or expression of anger. Fans have had a field day with coming up with whatever offensive meanings the supposed swear word may have, like the Japanese meaning of the similarly sounding word "kancho" as popularized by Naruto.
"En truva" and "homsak" are other Boazanian insults that have gained popularity in the fandom.
Giant Robot Cinematic UniverseExplanation Zambojil's boast that he will conquer planets such as Brahmin from Daimos, Tau Cetis from Combattler V and Gliese from GoLion have had fans hopeful for the potential of a shared universe series similar to the Marvel Universe. With plans of a potential live-action Daimos adaptation, it may seem possible in the future.
∀ Dokugaga/Turn A Dokugaga.Explanation In Japan, the Legacy version of Dokugaga is called "Turn A Dokugaga" or "∀ Dokugaga" in video comments, message boards, and forums because of how much Dokugaga looks like the titular Gundam of ∀ Gundam.
Starring Mamoru Miyano as "Ignacio".Explanation In the "Voltes V: Legacy:The World is Under Attack" Mega Trailer, during the scene where Commander Robinson says, "It's a Boazanian Beast Fighter," he has a side character soldier standing right beside him: "Ignacio" as played by Jon Lucas. Japanese commentators from both Nico Nico Douga and YouTube were quick to joke that the soldier is actually played by veteran voice actor Mamoru Miyano of Death Note fame or he (Jon Lucas) might even be the "live-action version of Mamoru Miyano" (as if Miyano is a living cartoon or anime character himself) due to how closely they resemble each other.
Palmolive Naturals.Explanation An advertisement for the shampoo and conditioner Palmolive Naturals features Ysabel Ortega, the actress who plays Jamie Robinson, and fittingly appears during TV airings of Voltes V Legacy. Problem is, it tends to pop up during serious dramatic moments, such as Eva attempting to assassinate Jamie, Zunaizer being unleashed to attack the CBF, the reveal of the Solar Falcon, or the explosion of the Posi-Negatron...leading to some serious Mood Whiplash especially with the commercial actually taking up half the screen while the scene is playing out.
The Retroactive Recognition of Christian Vazquez ended up getting a meme, where Vasquez's commercial role ends up replacing his lines about taking up fine arts with becoming a Boazanian emperor (may or may not include moving to Boazan) or a Tatsulok member (Vasquez played The Brute to Albert Martinez' (who also played Dr. Smith) Big Bad until he was upstaged by the Greater-Scope Villain Altare syndicate in The Iron Heart).
Similar memes love to play on the Actor Allusion of the main cast's previous roles. These include Neil Ryan Sese (Dr. Hook) being in Encantadia, Martin Del Rosario (Prince Zardoz) in The Panti Sisters, and Miguel Tanfelix (Steve Armstrong) in Mulawin, to name a few.
We have Voltes V at home.Explanation A parody of the "Mcdonalds at home" meme showing the Voltes Team...except it's comprised of Steve from Blues Clues, Mark Zuckerberg, Jon Snow and Jamie Lannister from Game of Thrones and Big Bird from Sesame Street.
EvagagaExplanation Based on a Twitter post by Elle Villanueva (Eva Sanchez) joking "what if I just become a Beast Fighter". When asked by Jamie Robinson actress Ysabel Ortega what her Beast Fighter name would be, she quipped "Evagaga", leading to many memes of her character Eva as a Beast Fighter or being defeated by the V-slash.
Mark and Big Bert are upside down. Explanation During the Volt-In sequence, the Volt Bomber and the Volt Panzer are shown rotating backwards as they form Voltes V's arms and torso. Fans were quick to joke that in a standing position, Mark and Big Bert would be in an inverted posture in the cockpits, though it can be presumed their cockpits would also rotate like when Jamie's Volt Lander splits in two to form the feet.
Unlike the original with a Monster of the Week format, Legacy has a more telenovela-style approach to further flesh out characters and storylines. An unfortunate consequence of this is how it takes 12 episodes for the Dokugaga battle teased in episode 1 to actually commence. (Legacy airs Monday to Friday unlike the anime which used to air only once a week.) Memes blew up of the heroes keeping Dokugaga waiting, or Dokugaga itself getting some backstory.
The third Beast Fighter of the series, Gardo, became subject to memes comparing him to the character Cardo Dalisay from the hit Filipino TV series Ang Probinsyano (2015). There were also a handful of memes instead referencing Filipino actor Gardo Versoza.
Zardoz and Zandra's bed scene, one of the show's expansions/changes (in the anime, her love for him was mostly unrequited and unnoticed until the very end), made a lot of memes about how horny they are, with some joking that the show is secretly porn, turning the anime ecchi/into hentai, etc. Some go as far as to joke whether Zardoz also has horns on his "other head", or saying they are literally horny. There are even joking terms for this: "Boldtes V"note "Bold" is a Filipino English slang term for local erotic Porn with Plot films that were all the rage in the 70s, 80s and 90s until the early 2000s, getting wide theatrical releases even as some early to mid-80s films went hardcore. and "The V in Voltes V stands for Vivamax".note Vivamax is an online video subscription service that offers not just films released by Viva Films, one of the country's well-known film companies, but also exclusive original softcore erotic films.
A modeling photo of Liezel Lopez and Martin del Rosario in seductive poses has also gone viral, with Liezel sitting on Martin's shoulders and him being shirtless in the photo. Jokes quickly took advantage of the picture to imply Zandra and Zardoz's lustful feelings to each other, and their posture on top of each other also inspired memes suggesting that this was how Zandra got inspiration for Dainegu's combination.
"Bebe time punishment".
On a similar note, Zuhl and Draco fighting over who gets to be Prince Zardoz's right-hand man has also led to plenty of Ho Yay with memes joking about the two being romantic rivals of Zandra over Zardoz's favor.
Emperor Zu Zambojil threatening to make a slave of Zardoz if he fails any more had fans memeing about him turning Zardoz into a sex slave, with Princess Leia in Jabba's Palace from Star Wars: Episode VI being a joking comparison.
Broken beyond repair.Explanation Doctor Smith uses an example of kintsugi, or broken pottery fixed with gold, as a symbolic example of how even something broken can become better, and that "no one and nothing is broken beyond repair." Fans, of course, humorously pointed out the one notable exception: the Beast Fighters, which are definitely broken beyond repair. (And exploded into shrapnel to boot.)
The presence of a Boazanian spy inside Camp Big Falcon and the ensuing search for their identity inevitably led to comparisons to Among Us, with the suspected spies being accused of being "sus".
The fourth Beast Fighter Neegu being renamed "Negg" in the adaptation has led to widespread jokes about the racial Bowdlerization due to the pronunciation of the original sounding too much like a certain slur.
An exploitable meme template similar to the scene of Captain America being ganged up on by Agent Brock Rumlow and his men inside an elevatorExplanation He is attacked by Brock and his comrades who are actually Hydra agents within S.H.I.E.L.D. after he asked them if they want to get out of the elevator prior to fighting his way out in Captain America: The Winter Soldier was made of Prince Zardoz punishing Zuhl with an electric ray, usually involving Zuhl telling bad jokes or awful puns and incurring the prince's wrath from his groan-worthy humor.
Zambokojil.Explanation A popular Korean-Japanese eat-all-you-can buffet restaurant in the Philippines is known as Sambo Kojin. Jokes quickly were made about Emperor Zambojil being a fan of said restaurant or being its owner.
Vaizgander.Explanation A pun on the name of Vaizanger with Vice Ganda, a Filipino celebrity comedian and gay activist.
Voltes V vs. DragrederExplanation The fourth Beast Fighter, Negg, vaguely resembles the titular Kamen Rider's contract monster, leading to fans imagining Dragreder being the robot's opponent instead of said Beast Fighter due to being a red, serpentine dragon. Given that Ryuki is popular among the Philippine Kamen Rider fandom during the Turn of the Millennium in the same way as the original Voltes V anime was during The '70s. For added bonus, both shows were given a "foreign"adaptation, which received positive reception among Japanese viewers.
GollumUnicornMegamindExplanation A tongue-in-cheek description of Zuhl, who is a bald, big-headed mad scientist with a single horn and a throaty voice.
Judy Above All.Explanation Big Bert spending more time with Judy than fulfilling his training has had jokes saying that he misheard duty as Judy in "Duty Above All" and is giving her attention by mistake.
Mikasa. Explanation Little Jon's toy boat Mikasa has gotten plenty of joking comparisons to Mikasa Ackerman of Attack on Titan.
Komyuter Payb.Explanation It's an Affectionate Parody by Filipino meme channel PGAG, depicts a parody version of Voltes V but instead formed from public transport vehicles, such as a calesa, a jeepney, a tricycle, a bus and a train.
Jopay.Explanation A Fan Nickname given to Eva, due to her resemblance to a member of the Filipino singing and dancing group The Sexbomb Girls with the same name. Filipino YouTube blogger Nico David first used and popularized the nickname in his reviews of Voltes V: Legacy episodes.
No fishing. Explanation Negg's first attack at the harbor prominently features a "No Fishing" sign. Many audiences joked that it was a rather unsafe place to fish with a giant robot serpent on the loose. Other memes show Negg as apprehending those breaking the rules, or Negg itself being the one getting apprehended for violating the "no fishing" sign.
Smug Daiga.Explanation Daiga's face bears an amusingly smug smirk that was ripe for memes. A series of memes in particular captioned Daiga's expression to all sorts of scenarios involving Daiga acting like he's so smart while completely misunderstanding the situation.
Other memes have interpreted Daiga's smirk as a more perverted grin, leading to memes and jokes portraying Daiga and Negg and their combined form Daineegu as a Crack Pairing of sorts and in a romantic or sexual light.
Superhero Landing.Explanation During the Dainegu arc, Voltes V does the infamous Superhero Landing popularized by Marvel and DC movies. Big Bert even specifically calls it a "Superhero Landing", which was named that way in Deadpool (2016). This has led to memes where Yelena Belova/Crimson Widow from Black Widow (2021) calls Voltes V a poser.
Dainegu's Roller Form.Explanation The form led to many jokes about "wheelchair accessibility" or calling Dainegu a cripple. It trying to crush Voltes V with its wheels also got compared with the "Road Roller" scene from Jojos Bizarre Adventure.
Bomboz, the sixth Beast Fighter, resembles a mosquito and is said to be an easy defeat for Voltes V. Cue the flood of memes about Baygon bug spray, or "ultra-electromagnetic fly swatter".
Zardoz and Zandra Mall Date.Explanation Actors Liezel Lopez and Martin Del Rosario went on a mall tour in full costume and in character, for a Facebook promo hashtagged #bozziedatesonearth. Memes soon went around poking fun at Zardoz and Zandra seemingly slacking off on the job, with Zuhl being compared to the member in a school project who does all the work, or to Emperor Zambojil berating the two for loitering around instead of trying to conquer the planet.
Here's an expectation vs. reality meme about that mall visit regarding Zardoz riding on horseback.
Zardoz transforms into Daniel PantiExplanation A previous role of Martin Del Rosario has him cross-dressing as one of the Panti Sisters. Memes soon blew up joking about the attire being Zardoz's disguise or secret identity.
Robot Ned quickly became a meme among fans of Dennis Trillo, with some jokingly comparing his glowing red eyes to his previous role in Encantadia. Being a robot assassin with metal claws, the Terminator and Wolverine references also went abound.
Beast FighterGamera's very late appearance (Gamenza was supposed to tag-team with Namazungo in the anime) has fans poking fun about it being a turtle and thus being too slow to come to Namazuka's aid.
It resembling a spiky-shelled and fire-breathing turtle also led to many fans comparing it to Bowser from the Mario series.
And for those familiar with local TV, some compared it to Pong Pagong, a Muppet-like turtle character from the Filipino children's show Batibot.
Gamera literally being named "Gamera" instead of the original "Gamenza" led to jokes referencing Austin Powers's "It looks like Godzilla, but due to international copyright laws it is not!". Some edits add the original Gamera theme to Beast Fighter Gamera.
Gamera being the only Beast Fighter to never fight the combined Voltes V and be destroyed easily by the Volt Bomber and Volt Panzer jamming its chest cannon has led to it being a bit of a Memetic Loser. Some of the fans were confused by Gamera's explosion and were wondering why it didn't reappear.
"Move It!"Explanation Dr. Larry Hook's catchphrase "Move It!" has been widely memed, with many comparing it to "I Like To Move It" song by King Julien from Madagascar, or inserting him into shipping company ads that "move" things.
His surname Hook also leads to quite a few pirate-related jokes.
That also includes jokes about his first name being revealed to be Larry.
Voltes V's Grand Fire.Explanation Revealed during the fight with Zairus: Ground Form, the Grand Fire attack led to plenty of off-color jokes due to it being a flamethrower located uncomfortably close to Voltes V's crotch (okay, so belt buckle, but still.) Many jokes arose from Voltes V urinating on their enemies, or suggesting they need to see a doctor due to a "burning sensation".
Zairus the Beast Fighter is fairly memetic, with jokes associating it to Jake Zyrus, comparing it to Zoids or a Power Rangers Dinozord, or poking fun at the ridiculous image of a flying Triceratops jet.
General Ospac.Explanation The Legacy version of General Oslak/Oslack (or Do Bergan in the original anime) somehow has the same looks and lithe build as Philippine boxing legend and eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao. YouTuber Nico David has also referenced this in his video reviews of the show.
Okozenia being another fish Beast Fighter after Namazuka led to many jokes about Big Bert finding it appetizing too. Some have expressed dismay at the crab-like Beast Fighter Kanigan not appearing, joking that it could have joined the two fish as a "seafood platter".
Desler, being a green-hued Beast Fighter with a bow, became commonly compared to the De La Salle Green Archers, a well-known college basketball team in the Philippines. Some saw it as a wasted opportunity that the Mechanical Eagle was colored red and not blue, as the La Salle Green Archers are well-known for their rivalry with another university team called the Ateneo Blue Eagles.
Then again, at least the beak of the Mechanical Eagle is coincidentally colored blue, so there's that.
Daiand, Dorion and Giron being replaced by a ring, a plague-spreading spaceship fleet and two human-sized Boazanians have led to memes joking about the budget, or portraying the Beast Fighters themselves annoyed at getting cheated out of a chance to appear in the remake.
Contessa Zaki.Explanation Duke Zaki being turned into a woman for the remake had fans joking about Zaki being transgender, or the male anime Zaki "losing the sperm race". Some think the gender-swap was to add romantic tension against Zandra, which led to many memes of Zandra being jealous of her for Zardoz's affection.
Battle of the action stars' daughters.Explanation Episode 75 features a fight between Jamie and Arisa, which is interesting due to their actresses being daughters of famous action stars. Ysabel Ortega, who plays Jamie, is the daughter of Lito Lapid; while Kylie Padilla, who plays Arisa, is the daughter of Robin Padilla. Lamarck Was Right is in effect here.
The very late appearance of Suneizaa/Zunaizer caught everyone off-guard, yet fan reactions suggest it to be a pleasant surprise. Some expressed relief at finally getting a Beast Fighter again and others joking about the first Beast Fighter to appear out of order.
Disappearing Dr. Hook.Explanation Once Eva is exposed for her murder attempts, she opens fire on Dr. Hook: who turns out to be a hologram and promptly vanishes. Fans quickly made memes of Hologram! Dr. Hook fading into thin air, joking about running away from responsibilities or dads going "to buy milk" in the same vein as the "Nileseyy Niles Disappears" meme.
Camp Big Chicken.Explanation Some fans find the appearance of Camp Big Falcon more closely resembling a chicken than a falcon. The meme garnered further traction after a map of the CBF was labeled "wing part" and "breast part", leading to many jokes about fried chicken.
The Solar Bird combining with Camp Big Falcon led to some predictable off-color humor. The fact that the camp, the Mechanical Eagle and now the Solar Bird have all been avian-themed has also led to memetic flanderization about how much Ned Armstrong likes birds.
As the show neared its finale, reaching the Solar Falcon arc, many fans expressed concern (joking or otherwise) that the show would get banned again, due to the current president being the son of Ferdinand Marcos who then banned the series for its subversive themes.
Due to this issue some have satirically referred to President Marcos Jr. as "Prince Marcoz".
Zardoz's helmet as he pilots the final Beast Fighter Godor has been memetically compared to the PokémonSlowking due to its spiked, conical shape.
Godor Double XExplanation Godor's shoulder-mountedBFGs led to comparisons with Gundam Double X's Twin Satellite Cannons, or to an extent the Freedom Gundam's Balaena Plasma Cannons, which functions similarly with Double X's Twin Satellite Cannons. Some people online even joked that Zardoz was screaming in the end because he wasn't a Newtype pilot so he went insane using those twin cannons on Voltes V.
Contessa, the mother of Zambojil, being crushed to death by Godor's Three-Point Landing has been subject to many Black Comedy jokes, comparing her to other anime characters who similarly died of being crushed.
With all the hype surrounding the potential future Daimos adaptation, further fueled by the repeated name drops of the planet Brahmin and even Campbell from Combattler V, many fans expressed disappointment at the lack of any post-credits scene or teaser, joking that they were "clickbaited".
Baron Zander/Xander, who dies along with Oslak in the anime, instead escapes here via teleporter...and vanishes entirely. Fans have had increasingly wild Epileptic Trees ideas on where he went, some suggesting his survival could tie in to Daimos or joking that he suffered a Bus Crash and just died offscreen.
