  • The Christmas Song: "His eyes filled with all the vigor of a young man!! ...She has a difficult Friday evening sleep."

• Adorkable: The personification of Google Translate can get endearingly excited and wacky about whatever subject she's discussing, despite her tendency to corrupt everything and sometimes get creepy.
• Alternative Character Interpretation:
  • When "Taylor Swift" says "Gays, now we have a problem." Is she addressing the gays about some problem, or is she saying that the gays are the problem?
  • Is Meg from I Won't Say I'm in Love just a selfish narcissist or a lesbian who manages to maintain a high self-image despite being faced with homophobia?
  • Is the line "Suddenly, you are a man" from Yesterday addressed to a boy who has grown up or a transgender person? Or even someone whose gender suddenly, involuntarily changed through more fantastic means? (though that trope more often entails a man becoming a woman)
  • With "Mariah Carey" stating that "All I Want For Christmas Is Your Baby", does she want to steal somebody else's kid or does she want her lover to have a kid together?
  • Is Elsa from "Let It Go" singing "give up" about herself, or is it directed at an enemy?
  • In "God Help the Outcasts", Esmeralda says "God will help the wicked". Does she mean this in the sense that God will aid them in committing evil deeds, or that He will assist them in becoming better people, much like how one "helps" an addict? The latter is a major theme of Christianity, after all.
  • Is the Hula Queen from the ABBA video a bee or are she and the bee separate characters?
  • Is Mother Gothel from "Mother Knows Best" going to die or is she just emo? Likewise, the execution she mentioned and the peace delays—is she liking the idea of them because she's evil or has she turned into a pacifist? She does mention that "violence cannot be used" but it is also followed by "insufficient" so she might just think violence isn't enough.
  • "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas" has the lyric "And all skin types can be white". Is this a statement promoting racism, or anti-racism?
  • When Beast sings, "Because I can, I must skip", does he mean he must skip something, or he must prance?
  • Anna in "For the First Time in Forever" is a bit ambiguous in why she's acting so loopy. Is she slowly being Driven to Madness, was she mad from the beginning, or is she (as she even wonders herself) high, or drunk on sparkling wine?
  • In The Wellerman, the Singer states that "Hope the gardener will come soon". Does the singer mean that she is hoping her gardener will come soon or that the gardener (whose name is actually Hope) is actually coming soon? Later on, this changes to "Hope Varman will be here soon" - is Varman a separate person who she also hopes will come soon, or is the gardener's full name Hope Varman? (Varman is a a surname used in India and Southeast Asia).
    • The singer also states that "there is no such thing as a leopard" - does she believe that leopards are mythical creatures, or does she mean they went extinct in the world the song takes place in? Since earlier she says "the tigers were gone", maybe something has caused the extinction of multiple big cat species. It could even be a combination of both - tigers and leopards are not only extinct, but have been for so long that some people don't believe they ever existed.
• Angst? What Angst?:
  • While this trope was not technically from a GTS song, Ariel lampshades this during Malinda's cover of After Ever After with her stating this-
    "Why are you all happy? We're dying!"
  • Several songs, such as "Mother Knows Best" and "La Vie en Rose", have characters seemingly not caring about dying and coming back to life.
  • In "Baby, it's Cold Outside", "Linda's" mother married Satan and her father's in prison, and "Karid" is infertile and was apparently asked to kill his grandpa... yet they're more concerned about the mold and cold women outside.
• Awesome Music: In "Google Translate Explains Evolution", there is one part where the definition of evolution is sung to an energetic rock-and-roll tune:
  Any change in inheritable traits within a population across generations! Any change in inheritable traits within a population across generations!
  HIS EYES LOOKED BACK TO THE END! HIS EYES LOOKED BACK TO THE END!
• Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Even by the standards of this series, there are some moments that are are beyond weird.
  • The "Cream/Saber this is you" interludes from Problem.
  • The random cries of "Hello Kitty" in Bad Blood.
  • "Make your choice" in Poor Unfortunate Souls translated as "Cucumber!"
  • "All our state airports really get me!" from Popular.
  • "Gradually watermelon" from Shape of You.
  • "Moths With Headphones" and "Satan Takes Me To The Pasta" from Havana.
  • "Popcorn" from Thriller.
  • In the Mary Poppins video, "The job's a game" is translated as "The camp of the beasts".
• Crosses the Line Twice: Every now and then, the translated lyrics slip into this.
  • From Won't Say I'm In Love: "Child trafficking! Honey I am VERY angry!"
  • From Perfect: "Child, suddenly in the dark...touching me..." (lampshaded when another Malinda points out how disturbing that line is)
  • In the Beauty and the Beast video, Belle holds up a knife and sings, "But it kills".
• Fetish Retardant:
  • Malinda playing Miley Cyrus licking a tennis ball sensually in slow motion... only to cringe because it tastes terribly.
  • In Dangerous Woman, Malinda seductively puts a finger in her mouth... only to accidentally bite it, causing her to cringe.
• First Installment Wins: While many would argue that the series has Growing the Beard since then, her first video has by far the most views, by a margin of over four million. It helps that it was a "Let It Go" cover released during the height of Frozen's popularity.
• Fridge Brilliance:
  • Aside from Rule of Funny, why is Malinda so enthusiastic in her "Let It Go" translation when she sings that the perfect woman runs on radiation? Because the song now deals with female empowerment.
  • In the dinner video, there's the line "Dinner, and back to the bathroom". Having the word "back" in there kind of makes sense because toilets are mentioned earlier in the video. Going to the bathroom may have a meaning besides the obvious— maybe the dinner is so disgusting that the person wants to flush it down the toilet.
  • In "The Plagues", Moses considering incest with his sister is incredibly disturbing. Until one remembers that Moses was adopted. That said, it's still weird for a biblical story.
  • Why does Malinda immediately recover from a heart attack in "Total Eclipse of the Heart"? Simple: she'd earlier declared that "we will live forever".
  • The usual "Google Translate Explains..." format is especially appropriate for "Google Translate Explains Evolution": Much like many small mutations over generations can gradually cause a large change, running text through google translate multiple times can make it virtually unrecognizable.
  • In "Baby it's Cold Outside", the nonsensical lyrics sung by "Linda" (the female singer) and the fact that she can't remember how to drink water kind of make sense when she wonders if she "smoked something else"; perhaps she's very high on whatever the thing she smoked is. Also, her and "Karid" (the male singer) seem to lack the chemistry that the singers in the original song had, which makes sense in that both are attracted to the "hot girlfriend" outside, suggesting that they both already have a crush and Linda might be a lesbian to boot.
• Genius Bonus: The fact that "Rapunzel" is translated as "lettuce" in Mother Knows Best refers to Rapunzel's namesake in the original fairy tale: a kind of plant, otherwise known as rampion or field salad, among other names, which Rapunzel's father stole from a witch's garden.
• Growing the Beard: While the singing and the translations were always good, the early episodes had a very simple, home made feel. As of One Day More and especially Wrecking Ball, the series got higher production values. The cinematography, sound and editing was improved, there was some actual location shooting and the singers started to dress up as their characters more often. This is taken even further in the Hello parody, where a drone was used to get some aerial shots.
• Harsher in Hindsight: In "Google Translate Explains How to Vote (don't do this)" proclaims "40 countries has 600 voting rights. Not for long." After the 2020 elections, many states began pushing laws that were widely accused of being intended to disenfranchise voters.
• He Really Can Act: Well, sing really. But it would be easy to write off Malinda as sounding good because of the gibberish lyrics and humour tone. Her non-Google Translate music videos, however, show that she really can sing quite well. Other viewers, however, feel that it is Malinda's talent - and ability to make bad lyrics sound good - is part of the series' appeal.
• Hilarious in Hindsight:
  • I'll Make A Man Out Of You has Shang asking Barack Obama to give him a husband. Gay marriage was legalized in all of the United States during Obama's second term as president.
  • In Blank Space, Malinda states that she does not want a child who loves trees. In On My Own, Malinda went to state that trees are bears which provided a very good explanation on why she does not want a child who loves trees.
    • And in "All-Star" she claims "my daughter has no knowledge of branches" - apparently she kept her daughter away from trees so well that she doesn't even know what they are.
  • Wrecking Ball has Miley Cyrus mention she has a "queer" heart. The year after the video's release, Miley came out as bisexual.
  • Be Prepared has Scar dream of becoming a Taxi, which brings the Jaxis from Super Mario Odyssey to mind.
  • bad guy (released in July) features the lines "I'm a cat/ And it's a bad thing" accompanied by screenshots of, respectively, the trailer and like/dislike ratio for Cats . The film in question, released four months later, has been critically slaughtered, with many reviews singling out the uncanny valley CGI as being one of the worse things about the film.
  • "Google Translate Explains How to Vote (don't do this)" proclaims that November 3rd is the "day of weeding". Numerous states did indeed vote to legalize medical marijuana along with Oregon decriminalizing drug possession.
• Hollywood Homely: Several lines in Poor Unfortunate Souls imply that Ursula is meant to be just as ugly as she was in the movie, but she is played by Malinda Kathleen Reese - who is quite pretty - in too much make-up.
• Hollywood Pudgy:
  • Joanne is implied to be several months pregnant (she says that she has back pain, and Maureen calls the baby cute), but she is played by Malinda, who is thin as a rake.
  • When Malinda portrays Donald Trump, she says "I am fat. Am I right?"
  • Ursula also implies she is fat several times in "Poor Unfortunate Souls" but she is played by Malinda, who's quite skinny.
• Ho Yay: Google Translate has an odd tendency to add this in songs. These all became Hilarious in Hindsight in 2022, as Malinda came out as bisexual in that year.
  • In Royals, Malinda mentions that she "fell in love with the queen." However, she also says that she has a boyfriend, and that they "will not get into a love relationship."
  • Anna almost sounds like she is proposing to Elsa in Do You Want to Build A Snowman?
    Anna: "I just got here for you, just let me. I'm loving it. You and I. Yes we do."
    • She also seems to have rejected one of her male suitors, saying she "killed his romantic desire."
  • In Defying Gravity, the line "Well if that's love" is translated as "Well if this is love," making it seem like a reference to Glinda and Elphaba's relationship. Also, Elphaba says that Glinda can "take" her, and the line "kiss me goodbye" is translated correctly.
  • "Miley Cyrus" mentions that she has a "queer" heart in Wrecking Ball. This became Hilarious in Hindsight one year later, when Miley Cyrus actually came out as bisexual.
  • Somehow, Google Translate actually managed to add unintentional lesbian themes to Take Me or Leave Me, a song which was already explicitly about a lesbian relationship. It now has repeated mentions of Maureen and Joanne coming out of the closet and having at least one baby together.
  • "Iggy Azalea" mentions that she also has "a problem with a woman."
  • I'll Make A man Out Of You reinterprets Shang as a Manly Gay man looking for a husband.
    • Yao (who, like Shang, is also played by Caleb Hyles) quickly leaves when Chien-Po announces that they have no pants. It's not entirely clear if they are meant to be a woman here, but they are played by Malinda at least.
  • Bohemian Rhapsody has Malinda crying out "Boobs, ooh!" for no apparent reason. Also a Big-Lipped Alligator Moment.
  • One Direction Medley manages to give both of these to the same characters. On one hand, the band calls a man "honey" (Though it's also possible that they were insulting a woman by saying that she looked like a man.) On the other hand, they also mention taking a lady to dinner where "her legs spread in the open air," and they are all played by Malinda in boyish clothes, which gives them quite a few Butch Lesbian vibes.
  • There really isn't that much of this in Somewhere Over the Rainbow, though it was - in an amazing coincidence - released the same day that LGBT marriage became legal in all of the United States. When you consider that the original song - and by extension, the movie it came from - has a huge LGBT Fanbase (To the point of likely being one of the major reasons for why the pride flag is a rainbow.) it really does come off as rather fitting.
  • SIRI and Malinda seem to have a thing for each other, combining this trope with Kiss Me, I'm Virtual. It culminates in this line.
    Malinda: "SIRI, all I want for Christmas is your baby."
    SIRI: "Who? Me?"
    Malinda (to the audience): "She's flustered."
  • Half of what the muses tell Meg in I won't say I'm in Love could be interpreted like them calling her out for being gay.
    "Do you think it's a joke? He created the heavens and the Earth. Try privacy. You can see it in the closet. Girlfriend cannot cover it."
    • "You can not deny a woman who can have you..."
  • The Nursery Songs video has one mention of a "coming-out."
  • In Hello, the boyfriend of Adele 's character - originally portrayed by Tristan Wilds - is now played by Malinda. This is probably meant to be a Crosscast Role, but neither the original song nor the translation contain any pronouns, so it could be interpreted as a lesbian romance.
  • The translation for Hellfire changes the pronouns' genders, which leads to Frollo apparently lusting after a man named Ben. (Who may or may not be Madonna, who is really a man.)
  • In What Is This Feeling, Elphaba and Glinda both refer to the other as their boyfriend rather than their room-mate. "With simple utter loathing" is also translated to the Tsundere-esque "I totally do not like it".
  • In I Dreamed A Dream Fantine ends the song saying she's gonna dream of her wife.
  • In the Beatles Medley, one of the Beatles asks where the "single guys" are during the Eleanor Rigby segment.
  • In The Plagues, Moses mentions that his husband is leaving.
  • Isabela has a girlfriend in the "We Don't Talk About Bruno" video.
• Memetic Mutation:
  • The "Give up" line from the "Let it Go" video is well-known.
  • "Gradually watermelon, gradually watermelon, gradually watermelon..." ^note  An infamous lyric from the "Shape of You" video. It's become so popular that it's kind of just become a punchline. Malinda herself joined in on the meme and has made merch based off it, but she seems to believe it's overused now because the cooking video has "Don't" onscreen when the word "gradually" pops up.
  • "Satan takes me to the pasta!" ^note  From "Havana".
  • "BOOMERANG!" ^note  From "Never Gonna Give You Up".
• Moment of Awesome: From Shape of You: "You and Ihavetightlylinkedtheagriculturaleconomyandalltheactivatedmealsitfillshispocketsblessingalltheverbs!"
  • Malinda hitting the climactic high note from The Phantom of the Opera.
• Narm Charm: The lyrics range from strange and grammatically incorrect to completely incomprehensible, but the singing is so good that the emotions from the original songs are brought out regardless.
• So Bad, It's Good: Invoked: The whole show runs on the fact that Google Translate is sometimes so bad at translating that some translations it comes up with are straight up hilarious.
• Squick:
  • "Iggy Azalea" mentions that her liver "is easy to see." It's probably a good thing that her outfit doesn't leave her midriff exposed.
  • This is Malinda's own reaction when saying "Disease of the sponge" to SIRI, who responds by giving her information about sponge diseases, many of which apparently affected the kidneys.
  • In "My Heart Will Go On" the titular line becomes "I Will Live In My Bowels", to which Malinda reacts appropriately.
  • The dinner video has "Dinner and back to the bathroom".
• Tear Jerker:
  • While not exactly a Google Translate Sings, the cover of "After Ever After" (a satirical Disney song where Ariel's realm is polluted, Aladdin is missing, Pochahontas has STD's and Belle's in legal trouble) is pretty sad.
  • During "Look What You Made Me Do", the final "What am I doing?" is sung in a loud, sobbing voice with Malinda frowning. However, it switches back to funny when the other Malindas tell her off for reinventing herself too much.
  • The video of "Country Roads" is about a guy who wants to take a road trip, but can't because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He ends up sobbing on his bed at the end. It's painful.
• Took The Bad Song Seriously: Invoked. Every singer performs the translated songs just as seriously as they would have performed the original lyrics. (Except for Caleb Hyles in I Just Can't Wait To Be King and "Elphaba" in Popular, where they become Meta People and the former also starts corpsing at one point.) This just makes the songs funnier.
• Unexpectedly Dark Episode: While not exactly an episode, Malinda did a cover of "After Ever After", a satirical song about dystopian futures of Disney characters, in which Ariel is dealing with the BP oil spill while several of her friends (including Flounder) get eaten, Prince Ali is missing, Pocahontas has STD's, and Belle is under arrest because the villagers believe that she's Satan and that her marriage to Beast (who was a human by then anyway) was bestiality.
• Visual Effects of Awesome: Malinda plays both of the singers in her Cinderella video. The special effects, as well as the timing of the singing and their reactions makes it look as if they truly are two different people sitting down next to each other.
• What the Hell, Costuming Department?:
  • A lot of work was put into the A Whole New World video. It was shot in front of a green screen to make it look as if Aladdin and Jasmine really sat on a flying carpet. Jasmine wore a beautiful, blue dress. Naturally, Aladdin wore... a modern white t-shirt and blue jeans. His actor, Jasen Miyamoto, later admitted that it really didn't look that good.
  • The same thing happens in the "Phantom of the Opera" translation, where Malinda's scenes has her wearing a gorgeous, white dress, and are shot on location in a beautiful church. Caleb Hyles' scenes, on the other hand, were simply shot in his room and had him wearing a Phantom mask with a black t-shirt. Like Jason, he made fun of it in a later video.
• What Do You Mean, It's Not Political?: The Google Translate version of New Rules came across as a political song with lyrics such as "McCain has failed me" and "Putin will continue". Not to mention the singer states that she is angry about the new rules, goes to jail because of them, and tells people to read the new law.
