Crossovers
  • From chapter 20 of Ace Combat: The Equestrian War:
Rainbow Dash: Gilda! Tell me, why are you doing this? We used to be friends!
Gilda: That’s right, Dash! We used to be! But you chose those ponies instead of me!
  • In Adaptations, Scott accidentally causes Stiles to be functionally orphaned. Losing his dad to the other teen's naivety causes Stiles to cut all the bridges with him, and ultimately leaving for another galaxy as Scott refuses to accept their relationship cannot be fixed and harasses him at his new residence place.
  • The Chaotic Masters:
    • Wuya used to be a Xiaolin Dragon, and according to Dojo was considered a close friend by the rest (with it even being implied Dashi was in love with her), before she gave into her lust for power.
    • The Collector befriended Kimiko when she found his mirror as a young child, being the Only Friend she had for most of her childhood. She thus spent years trying to find a way to free him, eventually hitting on the idea to upload him into a virtual reality that her father created, from which he could spread across the internet. However, when this nearly succeeded and caused widespread chaos as a result, Kimiko was horrified, and convinced that the Collector had lied to and used her; in the present, she's still infuriated at even the mention of him.
  • In Harry Potter and the Grand Trainer Tournament, we learn that Jack Kenway and Lance Blackthorn were once best friends very much like James and Sirius were. When Koga of the Elite 4 caused the death of Jack's aunt and uncle Lance wanted to handle it through proper channels... and Jack saw this as Lance looking to cover the deaths up in order to hold onto his new position as a member of the Elite 4. The two ended up the commanders on the opposite side of the Johto/Kanto War and it has took ten years for the two to finally patch things up.
  • In Hater Good Side Story Swayed Decisions, a Breadwinners and Pickle and Peanut crossover, SwaySway and Sophee were best friends long before SwaySway met Buhdeuce. However, after they reunited she became jealous and decided to cruelly tease him. However, at the end they make ammends and later become friends again.
  • In I Against I, Me Against You, Princess Celestia and the Director of Project Freelancer were good friends twenty years before the story's beginning. Due in no small part to the circumstances surrounding Project Freelancer, it doesn't last.
  • In Necessary to Win, Ami and Takako follow this trope. They were friends since they joined the Nishizumi School together, until Ami's disagreement with Takako over the latter's harsh methods of discipline as coach of Black Forest drove a wedge between them. Both remain close with their mutual friend, Kikuyo, though.
  • Sums up Katniss's attitude towards Gale in the Angel/The Hunger Games crossover "Demon's Games" after Gale betrays Angel while working with Coin and indirectly causes Prim's death just because Gale wanted to punish the Capitol residents while Angel was planning to offer them amnesty. When asked to offer her insight regarding Gale's punishment, Katniss realises that she just feels cold towards Gale, not angry enough to punish him too harshly for something he never intended to happen but not willing to forgive him for his betrayal either.
  • Olga and Celestine from The Night Unfurls. The enslavement of dark elves by human slavers caused the former's Fantastic Racism towards humanity. Although the latter tried to convince the former that there is still good among the group she hated, it was all for naught, and they broke off their friendship due to their conflicting views, as well as the resulting Forever War between the two. Fortunately, they get better later on.
  • In Thousand Shinji, Misato and Ritsuko were friends... until the former got wind of the secrets of NERV. Misato's last straw was Ritsuko mocking her family's destruction shortly after murdering Kaji. Misato attacked her, and when Ritsuko tried to kill her in retaliation, Misato stabbed her.
“I... I... thoughts not mine... Ritsuko my... friend? I... I didn’t want to believe... fed up with her... fed up... had to hit that bitch. Had to hit that bitch! Feel her flesh crumple beneath my fist... yeah, just hit her, just make her shut up. Shut up! Shut up!”
  • In Manehattan's Lone Guardian, Leviathan at one point muses on a friendship she'd made with a human while she was still involved in environmental work. The human in question was a decent and charming guy who approved of her work, and she stayed in contact with him for years. After Copy X took power, he called out Leviathan for supporting the murderous actions of a madman, forcefully rejected the Reploid's weak efforts at defending the tyrant, and ended the call they were on. From that point down to her "death" against Omega they never spoke to each other again, though she still wonders from time to time if he's doing alright.
  • Shadows over Meridian: Vera's friendship with her fellow noble heirs comes to a bitter end after they learn she lied to them and nearly got them all killed just so she could kill Metalbeak and she blames in her madness everyone around her except for herself.
  • Thy Good Neighbor: Steffon Baratheon used to be the best of friends with Aerys Targaryen and Tywin Lannister. Unfortunately, with Aerys' descent into paranoia and pyromania and Tywin's into Disproportionate Retribution and obsession with his family's legacy, their friendship has strained to the point Steffon considers them both lost causes, and in particular, no longer is willing to accept the Targaryens as family.

DC Extended Universe

  • In Daughter of Fire and Steel, Jor-El and Dru-Zod were friends and colleagues until Zod staged a coup against the Science Council and Jor-El refused to support him.
Dru-Zod: Be reasonable Jor. The last thing I want is for us to become enemies El. Join me and save Krypton.
Jor-El: You've have abandoned the principles that bound us together. You've taken up the sword against your own people. I will honor the memory of the man you once were. Not the monster you've become.
Dru-Zod: [coldly, to his men] Take him away.

Disney Animated Canon

  • The Bolt Chronicles: Mittens and Tom have a mostly enjoyable day together in "the Clouds", complete with a night of lovemaking, but the tomcat abandons and ignores her the next morning. They have an unpleasantly testy exchange when they accidentally meet each other again on the street later.

The Ghost and Molly McGee

  • An Unpleasant Surprise: Molly gets a call from her old friend Ashley Harris from Dayton, Ohio who she was as close to as Libby in the show. The two chat as they catch up with each other but things turn sour once Molly tells her she has a girlfriend. Ashley reacts poorly and believes she and Libby are Brainwashed into being gay by their parents and spouts homophobic rhetoric. Molly is heartbroken to hear this and ends her friendship with Ashley when becomes clear she isn't willing to change her views.

Hetalia: Axis Powers

  • In Ignorance, My Bliss, the nations get energy boosts by drinking each other's blood, essentially making them all addicts. They discover that no one has fed off of America ever, meaning that his blood will give them a lot of strength, and don't hesitate at all to chase him down and drain him of his blood. Japan even tells America that though they're friends, his blood is just too tempting. And then, it turns out that even Canada turned on America, only pretending to save him so he'd have a chance to get him alone.

How to Train Your Dragon

Jackie Chan Adventures

  • In Queen of All Oni, after Jade turns evil once again, her family and friends still care deeply about her, to the point that they are willing to FIGHT her so that they can return them to normal, even though her feelings towards them have been twisted by Daolon Wong's faulty spell, especially towards Tohru, since he became Uncle's apprentice instead of her.

Katawa Shoujo

  • In Reconciliation, Hanako has this with Lilly and Hisao. The fic takes place after her bad ending, in which she snapped over being pitied by Hisao and angrily said she hated him and Lilly, then isolated herself from them out of guilt. This leads to an awkward moment when Hanako introduces her publicist and friend Sho to Lilly, who is unable to describe Hanako as anything more than someone she knew in high school, despite never having been angry with her for how she acted. By the end, the two have renewed their friendship and Lilly visits Hanako in Japan to catch up.
  • In Weekend at Hisao's, Hisao ends up encountering his friends who, in the prologue to the game, stopped visiting after a few weeks, and hears that they have a get-together planned with his former crush Iwanako. It takes some coaxing from Shizune and Misha before Hisao decides to attend, but the meeting goes fairly well and his old friends end up getting invited to his wedding a few years later.

The Legend of Zelda

  • FFS, I Believe in You: In the sequel, Murchadh and Uisdean used to be fairly close friends, when they were children, before Uisdean's increasing megalomania and obsession with power drove them apart and eventually forced Murchadh to join the rebellion against him.

Mega Man

Miraculous Ladybug

  • Played With in Chloe's Lament:
  • The Karma of Lies:
  • LadyBugOut:
    • After posting a questionable photo of Ladybug and Chat Noir to her Ladyblog, deliberately omitting the context for the sake of getting attention, Alya argues that she has every right to do so as Paris' biggest source of Ladybug news. Marinette responds by helping her own Secret Identity set up a blog of her own to set the record straight. Alya sees this as a massive betrayal, and her stubborn insistence that she's the real victim and that Marinette should apologize to HER leads to their friendship being completely broken off.
Alya: I can't be friends with someone who won't apologize and can't even see what she did.
Marinette: I can't be friends with someone like that either. So I guess we're not friends anymore.
    • Adrien and Marinette's relationship also falls apart due to his insisting that Chat Noir deserved that kiss, regardless of the circumstances. Later, she learns that Adrien was Chat Noir, and while willing to show him kindness and prevent his identity from being revealed to the world after he becomes Catastrophe, her old feelings for him effectively dissolve.
  • Marinette Dupain-Cheng's Spite Playlist:
    • Marinette and Alya's friendship falls apart after she transfers out, as Alya feels insulted that she didn't warn her. Once it becomes clear that Alya still won't hear her out regarding Lila, dismissing her feelings and blowing her off, Marinette responds to her saying "Maybe we shouldn't be friends at all!" with "Maybe we shouldn't."
    • Lila convinces Alya that she had a falling out with Ladybug, and that the superheroine is actually a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing.
  • The One to Make It Stay also sees Marinette and Alya's friendship hit a rocky patch. While Marinette attempts to soften the blow and spare her feelings as much as possible, she eventually requests that they take a break from each other over the summer, using the time to cool down. While Alya was the one to force the issue in the first place, she takes the separation harder... and critically treats it as though they've broken off their friendship for good rather than just taking a breather.
  • Of Patience and Pettiness: After seeing just how easily her classmates turned against her once Lila reentered the picture, Marinette no longer considers them to be her friends. Only the ones who prove willing to admit their mistakes and strive to make amends are able to salvage their relationships with her. Alya, by contrast, refuses to acknowledge she did anything wrong and tries to insist that they're still besties despite all evidence to the contrary.

My Hero Academia

  • Adalheidis sees this between All Might and Sir Nighteye. They used to be a Dynamic Duo, but after coming to Might Tower without being invited, tearing down Toshinori's adoptive daughter and chosen heir to One For All, Himiko, for her past mistakes, showing himself to be a Control Freak who thinks he knows better than his old partner who should inherit One For All, and revealing that he didn't know what Toshinori is like Beneath the Mask, Toshinori told his old partner to leave and never return.
  • The Fundamental Essence of Villainy: Izuku and Katsuki, before the latter bullied the former.
Izuku: I'm going to leave soon, Kacchan. And when I do? Things will change. I... well, let's be honest, I really want to ask you if you'd join me, more than anything in the world, but that's never going to happen. I just... We were brothers once, Katsuki. What happened to that?

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

  • It's common in fanfiction to show that Celestia and Luna used to be friends with Discord before he turned into an Evil Overlord and they had to use the Elements of Harmony on him.
  • A Burning Flame In My Soul: Following the twenty year Time Skip, everycreature in the Alliance of Harmony has dropped Queen Novo as a friend. This is because she disapproved of Silverstream's relationship with Gallus, who was not only a non-hippogriff, but an orphan with no noble blood and nothing to his name. This shocked everyone that Novo would go that far, including her own family. When Silverstream defied her, even after she demanded the end of their relationship, she permanently stripped Silverstream of her noble ranking as punishment, which lead to her daughter Princess Skystar challenging her for the throne and successfully overthrowing her as ruler of the hippogriffs. Now, nobody remembers Novo fondly, despite some members of her family reaching out to her, and Silverstream refuses to have anything to do with her until she finally accepts not just Gallus, but their son Garrus as part of the family.
  • Obviously crops up in Inner Demons, as the entire plot is driven by Twilight Sparkle succumbing to her Enemy Within and becoming the new Big Bad her friends have to fight.
    • Also an element in Apple Bloom's subplot. Her friendship with the other Cutie Mark Crusaders (primarily Scootaloo) falls apart after an argument in which she makes it clear she wants to take her search for her Cutie Mark more seriously. Later on, Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle are talked into Face Heel Turns, while Apple Bloom stays on the side of the protagonists. Notably, Sweetie Belle clearly still cares about their friendship and wants it back which is why she tries to talk Apple Bloom into switching sides as well.
  • In the Ponies of Olympus series, Rarity and her rival Ran Biao used to be friends when they were growing up together in Lao Wu's dojo, until Ran Biao grew jealous over Rarity's superior talent, and crossed the line by seducing and stealing Rarity's Love Interest Razorwing. Rarity never forgave her for that, and they've hated each other ever since.
  • Known to happen in Deconstruction Fics of the episode "The Mysterious Mare Do Well", including The World Jumper.
  • The Young Six: Sandbar and Comet Trail were good friends when they were both colts, but when Sandbar introduces Comet Trail to his new friends, he begins to insult Ocellus due to him being in Canterlot when Queen Chrysalis and her army invaded. When Sandbar asks him to apologize, he refuses, thus prompting Sandbar to end his friendship with him.
    • In a later chapter, Comet Trail, who has been hospitalized after being injured during Cozy Glow's attempt to drain all the magic to Equestria, apologizes for what he said to Ocellus, but he and Sandbar both agree that they are never going to be friends again.

Naruto

  • A Case Study in the Sturdiness of the Rookie 9:
    • Ino and Sakura's match during the Chuunin Exams is particularly ugly. On top of the old wounds of their friendship breaking up due to their conflict over Sasuke, Ino blames Sakura for corrupting Chouji and forcing him to go along with their plan to backstab them in the Forest of Death.
    • Downplayed with Chouji and Shikamaru. Due to the same incident that set off Ino, Shikamaru admits to Chouji that he's disappointed in him and isn't sure he wants to be assigned any missions working with him. However, this only further cements Chouji's Heel Realization, encouraging him to make even greater effort to fix things.
  • In Naruto Veangance Revelaitons, this trope could be said to define Ronan and Taliana's relationship, along with Face–Heel Revolving Door on Taliana's part. After several chapters of Taliana repeatedly switching sides, Ronan arbitrarily loses patience with her and gets a divorce from her. She makes several more attempts to kill Ronan for Madara, but he's still attracted to her despite her being his mother, and they have sex on a few occasions. Then the author broke up with the girlfriend who served as Taliana's inspiration, and Ronan kills her while claiming that he knew all along that she was evil.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

  • Advice and Trust: Misato and Ritsuko were friends, but due to Ritsuko's behavior they're falling apart. In chapter 8, Misato wonders if Ritsuko is still her friend.
  • The entire point of the the sadly discontinued Nanoha Dark Fic Betrayers, which divides the cast into a bloody civil war. Spoken practically word for word by Fate.
  • Asuka and Rei in Children of an Elder God managed to get along, even though both girls liked the same boy… but after the battle against the Violator where Rei hurt Asuka unwillingly but brutally, their friendship all but came to an end.
  • In Ghosts of Evangelion Misato tries to remember Ritsuko for what she was rather than she became when they broke their friendship off.
Misato: I compared you to my best friend, not to the monster she became.
  • Downplayed in The Gospel Of Malachel. Shinji tentatively befriended Terry and even moved to his apartment; but when Terry balks at helping Shinji stop Asuka from committing suicide, and he bluntly states he would have let her fall to her death, Shinji calls him out and moves back to Misato's place. Shinji does not openly declare their friendship over, but he does not talk to Terry again.
  • In Neon Genesis Evangelion: Genocide:
    • Misato and Ritsuko subverted this at the beginning. They broke their friendship off during the Angel War, but they kind of made up afterwards (though emphasis on kind of). Misato also considered that Ritsuko was her only friend left.
Her work was all that mattered to her. But that didn't invalidate the fact that Ritsuko was the one person Misato could call a friend. Even if she disagreed with her, she could at least be honest. Otherwise, she wouldn't have come.
    • However, when she finds out that that Ritsuko has used Asuka to test the Emerald Tablet, a dangerous sentient computer program, by putting it inside Unit-02, leading to Asuka being driven to the brink of insanity, the new pilot, Keiko, getting seriously injured, and Shinji almost getting killed, Misato decides that she can't forgive Ritsuko this time:
"I swear she's done some awful things in her life, but I will never forgive her for that."
  • Once More With Feeling (Crazy-88): After finding out the truth about the real goals of NERV and SEELE, Kaji has no choice but to treat his old friend Ritsuko like an enemy.
After all, if Shinji was right, Ritsuko, good ole Rits herself was fully aware of the ultimate goals of the Evangelion project.
Hell, she was up to her ever so pretty neck in it.
Meaning he had no choice but to treat her as an enemy. Someone he had known for close to a decade and he thought he knew well... and thought of as a friend.
It was no easy shift to make in ones thinking, even for him.
  • Subverted in The Second Try with Misato and Ritsuko. They almost broke their friendship off, but an unintended side-effect of Shinji and Asuka’s meddling with the timeline was they patched things up after the destruction of the clones of Rei.

NUMB3RS

  • TiesThatBind3rdgal: Doug is this to Charlie as they used to hang out until Margaret got sick and Don had to move back in with them, which caused Doug to be forced to move out, causing him to resent his former friend and plan his revenge on the Eppes family.

Pokémon

  • In Team Rocket Roots, Jessie and Cassidy grew up together and were childhood friends. Cassidy, however, found she couldn't deal with Jessie's mood switches and temper, so they've since become rivals at best and enemies at worst. By the epilogue, the two are on friendly terms again, if Vitriolic Best Buds.

Punch-Out!!

  • In Ma Fille, Katrina's first best friend is Claire, and they remain tight through elementary school. However, as they reach the tween years, Claire becomes ruder and more sassy, which culminates in a public breakup at school. By the teens, Annie has taken Claire's place as Katrina's best friend, and Claire gets her own Girl Posse to hang out with (consisting of fellow mean girls Veronica, Sasha, and later Mia).

Supergirl

  • Superboy and teenager Lex Luthor in Kara of Rokyn. As recounted by Lex's niece, they were friends until Lex started blaming Superboy for anything bad happened to him. After Lex attempted on Superboy's life, the Kryptonian teenager broke their friendship off. Even so, Superboy kept — uselessly — trying to reach Lex out through the years.
Nasthalthia Luthor: Superboy stomps back in, and he doesn't look pleased. Lex figured either he's going to get hit, or taken to jail, or both. But Blue Boy doesn't do either thing. He said that, since Lex saved his life once, he was going to give him a break and not take him in. He said that squared the debt between them. But he also said that he would never trust him again, that he could never see Lex as a friend again, and, believe it or not, that hurt Lex. Don't ask me or him why, but he said it did hurt.

Total Drama

  • In Courtney's Crusade for Redemption, the older Courtney reveals that, because of her previous actions, Bridgette (her Only Friend in canon) ended their friendship a long time ago. Also, Duncan lost all his friends because of him destroying Chris' cottage and going to jail.
  • In A TDA Love Triangle with Betty, Cody, and Gwenny, this is the case with Bridgette and Gwen, as a result of the fiasco over the latter's breakup with Trentnote . It's also the case with Geoff towards Gwen and DJ, due to his Acquired Situational Narcissism being even worse in canon to the point where he begins abusing Bridgette.

Undertale

  • In Not As Simple As A Happy Ending, Gaster describes Asgore as being like a brother to him. Their friendship was destroyed when Asgore ordered the murder of the soul of Perseverance, who had become like a daughter to Gaster.

Warrior Cats

  • In the Better Bones AU, Breezepelt is friends with Jayfeather, Hollyleaf and Lionblaze before their secret parentage is revealed, which causes him to turn against them.
Worm
  • This is a common trope in Worm fanfics, such as Atonement, Intrepid, Queen of the Swarm, A Tale of Transmigration, and Outcry. Emma and Taylor have a shared friendship that ended after Emma ends up being attacked and, seeking to change her world view, leads to Taylor triggering from a bullying campaign gone too far. Even if Emma tries to redeem herself, like in those fanfics listed above, Taylor will not forgive her in several of those stories.
