Video Game / Herobrine's Mansion

Go To

One of the most famous (certainly one of the most Let's Play-ed) Minecraft maps ever, created by Hypixel Studios in November 2012. It is mainly known for being the first map to exploit command blocks and MCEdit to their full potential. In it, the players must enter the lair of the infamous Herobrine and kill him. It also has a sequel called Herobrine's Return, and a Spiritual Successor in Wrath of the Fallen.

Herobrine's Mansion contains examples of:

  • 11th-Hour Superpower: Heavenly Grace, a bow with extremely powerful enchantments, is only available during the final boss fight against the Wither.
  • Always Night: The map is always set to nighttime, by virtue of Command Blocks which reset the time.
  • Big Boo's Haunt: The graveyard and crypt are both full of skeletons, even having one as a boss.
  • Big Fancy House: Herobrine may be evil, but he does have a pretty sweet house.
  • Boss in Mook Clothing: The Elite Monsters are Zombie Pigmen with extremely strong weapons and armor, making them almost impossible to take on in a fair fight. Of course, if you do manage to take them on, they drop valuable gold nuggets, and might also drop some of their heavy equipment.
  • Boss Rush: The fight with Herobrine becomes this when he starts to resurrect the previous bosses. Unusual in that you fight them all at once. And there's still the fight with the Wither immediately after that.
  • Boss Subtitles: All the bosses have signs labelling them outside their Boss Rooms. The Acolytes also have simple titles.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Tenacity is green, Angelic is blue, Demonic is red.
  • Good Colours, Evil Colours: Allies' dialogue is blue, enemies' is red.
  • Damage-Sponge Boss: All of the bosses (except the Wither) are regular mobs with inflated HP and (where applicable) stronger weapons. Some of them do have special attacks they use during the battle, but this isn't an inherent property of the bosses themselves.
  • Distressed Dude: Victor is under attack by a horde of zombies when you first encounter him.
  • Dragon Ascendant: The Wither takes over as Big Bad once Herobrine is defeated.
  • Evil Sorceror: Zatho, The Mage, is an evil Wither Skeleton mage and one of Herobrine's minions.
  • Final Boss: The Wither is the final opponent in the map, even after Herobrine himself.
  • Final Boss, New Dimension: The final boss is fought in the Nether.
  • Flunky Boss: All the bosses: The Skeleton King summons Skeletons, Benetha summons Baby Zombies, Zatho summons floating Pumpkin... things, Areita summons Cave Spiders, Herobrine summons the previous bosses, The Wither summons Wither Skeletons.
  • Giant Spider: Areita, The Spider Queen, is a giant spider who serves as one of Herobrine's Acolytes.
  • Infinity -1 Sword: The Demonic Set, which can only be bought at the store for very high prices, and contains the most powerful equipment in the map, except for...
  • Infinity +1 Sword: The best melee weapon is Herobrine's Axe, dropped after you kill him, while the best ranged weapon is Heavenly Grace. It's also the most powerful weapon in the map, and you use it to kill the final boss, only being able to use it in that fight.
  • King Mook: The Skeleton King and Areita, The Spider Queen, as their names suggest. The Skeleton King even has a crown.
  • Noob Cave: The woods and the graveyard only have a few very easy enemies, and are meant to get you accustomed to the gameplay style of the map.
  • Planet Heck: The final battle takes place in the Nether.
  • Playing with Fire: Zatho's main ability is to set you on fire.
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad: The Acolytes are a set of powerful mobs with special abilities and unique personalities which serve under Herobrine himself.
  • Rule of Three: 3 Acolytes, 3 equipment sets, 3 floors.
  • Wakeup Call Boss: Benetha is the first boss to have special abilities, as well as much stronger attacks and minions. Her fight is the definite point where the map starts to get hard.
  • Warmup Boss: The Skeleton King. He has weak attacks, few minions, not much health, and no abilities.
  • Wicked Witch: Benetha, The Witch, is an evil witch who serves under Herobrine.

Herobrine's Return contains examples of:

  • Attack Its Weak Point: To weaken Skeletor, you have to shoot him in the eyes; to kill Koragor, you have to shoot marked points along his arms.
  • Background Boss: Koragor is much too big for you to fight head-on, so you instead have to shoot at targets on his arms while he blasts you with fireballs and summons Blazes.
  • Boss Bonanza: Most of the map after the fight with Tarov is boss battles: Dina Bone, Koragor, and the three-phase final boss, with only the occasional squad of cannon fodder in between.
  • Boss Subtitles: Each boss has a nameplate (and sometimes title) outside their Boss Room.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Reading Herobrine's Orders is necessary to complete Sidequest 2.
  • Colour-Coded for Your Convenience: The tiered equipment sets have this going on: Crimson Blade is green, Raven is blue, Archdemon is purple, Archangel is light blue/white.
  • Damage-Sponge Boss: The Queen Slime, Tarov, and Herobrine's final form can all take quite a lot of punishment before going down, but aren't much more than vanilla mobs otherwise.
  • Developer Room: Not actually a developer room, but after you beat Herobrine, you find a cave full of Steve? Heads reskinned with the skins of famous Minecraft Let's Players. However, said Heads include Hypixel and Rezzus, so it actually is (partly) a developer room.
  • Dug Too Deep: One section in the mountains is set in a mine.
  • Dungeon Town: The map begins with a village being attacked by monsters, and you having to clear it out.
  • Easy Levels, Hard Bosses: The mooks are really just there to feed you Souls and items, the boss battles are where most of the challenge is.
  • Essence Drop: Every enemy you kill gives you a varying amount of Souls, which are used to buy certain items, as well as an easy way of keeping track of each player's kills.
  • Elite Mooks: Later in the map, there are lots of zombies and skeletons with stronger weapons and armor.
  • Final Boss: Herobrine is the final boss this time, unlike the first map.
  • Final Boss Preview: Herobrine appears briefly in the first area to taunt you and throw around Fireworks as a display of his power.
  • Fluffy Cloud Heaven: The Heaven Shop.
  • Flunky Boss: All the bosses except Tarov: Maltorn summons Zombies, Skeletor summons Skeletons and Flying Creepers, Dina Bone sets her experiments on you rather than fighting in the first fight and summons Creeper Mines in the second, Koragor summons Blazes, and Herobrine summons Soul Harvesters.
  • Good Colors, Evil Colors: Passive NPCs' dialogue is green, allies' is blue, and enemies' is red.
  • Hero Killer: Tarov actually manages to kill Thannos. He wasn't actually dead, though.
  • Infinity -1 Sword: The Archdemon Set, which doesn't drop from enemies, meaning it can only be bought at the Heaven Shop for a hefty price.
  • Infinity +1 Sword: The Archangel Set, which is even more powerful, but can only be bought at the Heaven Shop by paying Souls rather than Gold.
  • It's All Upstairs From Here: The section where you climb Tarov's tower, although this is roughly halfway through the story rather than at the end.
  • Kill It with Fire: Herobrine sets a lot of stuff on fire during the final battle.
  • Mad Scientist: Dina Bone is an evil witch who creates twisted experiments.
  • Multi-Mook Melee: Dina Bone's arena has you fight several of her "experiments" in a row.
  • Noob Cave: The village has only a few weak monsters, being just a warmup.
  • One-Winged Angel: Tarov transforms into a Wither halfway through the fight.
  • Optional Boss: The Queen Slime doesn't need to be fought to progress through the story. The Stone Guardian is also optional, though it's more of a Puzzle Boss.
  • Our Souls Are Different:
    • You collect Souls by killing monsters and lose them when you die. They can be exchanged for Archangel Set pieces in the Heaven Shop.
    • In the final boss fight, you also collect Demon Souls, which Thannos can use as an energy source.
  • Planet Heck: Most of the map is set in the Nether.
  • Playing with Fire: Koragor, The Lair Guardian's, main abilities revolve around fire. He can spew explosive fireballs at you, and also summon blazes.
  • Post-Final Boss: Herobrine's last form is much easier than the previous stages of the battle. While the second phase was the real final challenge, this one is just dealing the finishing blow.
  • Puzzle Boss:
    • Dina Bone has to be defeated by being lured into her own trap chamber and pelted with potions.
    • The Stone Guardian in Sidequest 2. You could fight it if you wanted (not recommended), but you're meant to get past it simply by giving it the right password.
  • Recurring Boss: Dina Bone is fought twice, though the first time you don't directly fight her.
  • Rouge Angles of Satin: "Crimson" is frequently misspelled as "Crimeson".
  • Rule of Three: 3 years, 3 Experiments, 3 Keys, 3 Hoppers to fill with 3 Gunpowder each, 3 platforms, 3 phases in the final battle, 3 Hoppers to fill with 3 Demon Souls each to break 3 chains…
  • Sequential Boss: Maltorn and Skeletor are fought directly in sequence. Tarov transforms into a different type of monster after you damage him enough. Then there's the fight with Herobrine: first is a mostly cinematic sequence where he flies around shooting fire everywhere, then he stands on the other side of a lake launching minions at you whose Souls you have to collect, then you finally fight him hand to hand.
  • Shielded Core Boss: With Maltorn, you have to drop 5 Zombie Hearts into the Hopper before you can hurt him, with Skeletor you have to shoot him in the eyes before breaking the block that contains his soul, with Dina Bone you have to destroy the Power Cores before pushing her into the Gas Chamber, and with Herobrine you have to break the chains holding his platform up before fighting him.
  • Shout-Out: The special items are all named after various well-known Minecraft players.
    • Dina Bone's name is a reference to Dinnerbone, the username of a Mojang member who had participated in a bunch of updates from around the time the map came out.
    • Not to mention the Zombie Centipede.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: A lot of explosive fireworks get tossed around.
  • Time Skip: Takes place 3 years after Herobrine's Mansion.
  • Turns Red: After you do enough damage to him, Skeletor will start summoning a new type of minion to deal with you: Flying Creepers.
  • The Very Definitely Final Dungeon: Herobrine's Lair, the ominous giant red castle on an island in a sea of lava in the Netherworld.
  • Wakeup Call Boss: The first part of the map is rather easy; things don't start getting difficult until the fight with Maltorn, where enemies start hitting harder and you start encountering more unique foes, like flying Creepers.
