You saw the madness. Now prepare for the nightmare

Friday Night Funkin': Nightmare Of The Mushroom Kingdom, also known as [FNF] Nightmare Of The Mushroom Kingdom, is a Friday Night Funkin' Game Mod created by J.McCormick. This mod is a Crossover with Vs Sonic.exe and is based on various Super Mario Bros. scary moments, as well as having reinventions and creepypasta-flavoured original characters inspired by the games.

The current 1.0 version follows the Sonic.exe storyline, in which almost all the opponents from Vs Sonic.exe will face the Mario characters from this mod, starting with the original Sonic.exe, who encounters and fights M.exe (J.McCormick's reinvention of Friday Night Funkin': Mario's Madness' Mario.exe) after being absorbed by a strange "M" shaped portal to an infernal place similar to Mario's world.

There're going to be 2 storylines in the next 2.0 update, following Sonic.exe's team and Boyfriend's team. Each story beginning will be different depending on the player's choice, but they'll cross paths in the end and will unite one way or another.

The mod is yet a project made on Scratch, but assets and resources to play the mod can be downloaded on Google Drive here. An adaptation of this mod made by magikarplover80 can be downloaded on GameBanana here.

Friday Night Funkin': Nightmare Of The Mushroom Kingdom provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Abomination: The Anti-Piracy Mario from the original fake anti-piracy screen video doesn't have eyes and its head, torso and neck are elongated into a black formation, while this version has its head turned into a beak-like head, kind of making it look like a bird-headed humanoid.
  • Adaptational Villainy: An ambiguous case with Unagi the Eel. The Super Mario 64 Unagi appears to be the name of one individual of the Unagi species, which are hostile towards Mario and Co. However, M64 Unagi is actually pretty neutral. It does hurt you if you touch it, but the eel itself doesn't come after you. It just swims around.
  • Adapted Out: Boyfriend and Girlfriend are nowehere to be seen in this mod. This will change in the 2.0 update, though.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: Probably the theme in "Musical Madness", since it's a piano battling a doll (well... a robotic doll, but you get the point).
  • Belly Mouth: Wario.exe has an additional mouth on his stomach, complete with teeth. The mouth becomes wider after his self-decapitation.
  • Bilingual Bonus: "Thalassophobia" is the fear of the ocean, pretty fitting for a giant Sea Monster that tries to eat Sunky.
  • Canon Immigrant: Almost all of the Mario and Sonic cast come from different series that have their own pages, but some of them are special cases, since they come from little known sources:
    • M.exe himself actually comes from Mushroom Kingdom Nightmare, an unpublished comic made by the mod creator, J.McCormick, about Mario getting possessed by a demonic parasite and forced to kill almost everyone in the world, with Luigi and Toad as the only survivors who would stop him.
    • The Anti-Piracy Mario comes from, as the name suggests, a fake anti-piracy screen, specifically one from Mario Kart Wii.
    • Beyond Human.exe comes from a Mario horror game of the same name, made by GeorgeTheHamster. The original game was deleted from Game Jolt, but a remake was made by NigelMasterGamer.
    • Finally, the Mario that sings with Needlem0use in "You Are Condemned" hails from a Hotel Mario creepypasta called Hotel Mario: The 13th Hotel.
  • Chase Scene: "Thalassophobia" shows Sunky swimming for his life so he does not get eaten by Unagi.
  • Denser and Wackier: "Frenzy Crazy" is much more comedic in tone than everything else in the mod, as Mareo.xe is a paper depicting a crudely drawn version of M.exe, and he faces off against the equally crudely drawn Sanic.exe.
  • Deliberately Monochrome: Upon revealing his true form, Beyond Human.exe becomes completely devoid of color, being nothing more than shades of black, white and gray.
  • Designated Girl Fight: Besides Maria.exe and Fanon Sonic.exe (and subverted with The 13th Hotel Mario and Needlem0use), the next update will also bring the fights of Boosette.xml and Rouge.exe and Alice in Mario's body against Needlem0use, aka Sarah.
  • Distaff Counterpart: Maria.exe and Fanon Sonic.exe.
  • Evil Versus Evil: Literally almost the entire point of the Sonic.exe storyline (save for Sunky and maybe all of the Soul characters save for Bowser and Eggman), at least in the 1.0 version.
  • Fan Disservice: The upcoming Bowsette.exe and Boosette.xml have noticeable cleavage and figures, but any potential sex appeal is squandered by their freaky expressions, exposed insides, and how they're completely stained in blood.
  • Life Drain: The rap battles in this mod (at least in the 1.0 version) are more like deadly singing battles, in which you and the opponent drain each other's health on the life bar.
  • Losing Your Head: Self-inflicted example: Halfway into "The EXECutioner", Wario.exe cuts off his own head using his axe.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Parodied with Maria.exe, in reference to "fanon" characters like Fanon Sonic.exe and Fanon Chara.
  • Sore Loser: Crazy Cosmic Mario. "Fallen Stars" ends with him using his powers to blast Fleetway Super Sonic away, even though the latter technically won the battle. For good measure, he even swears, though any cuss words he says are censored.
  • Undignified Death: Unagi dies in "Thalassophobia"... by having a bowl of cereal with milk thrown in the face by Sunky.
