  • Adapted Out: Quite a few of the minor characters, most notably the Paper Macho bosses and all of the Vellementals outside of the Ice Vellemental, with areas like the Outlook Tower, the inside of the Shogun Studios and the Princess Peach never being explored. This makes sense, considering that Mario is still doing his quest off-screen and would interact with these characters off screen.
  • Adaptational Context Change: In The Origami King proper, Rubber Band explodes after being defeated. Here, he still explodes, but it's out of sheer rage due to being defeated by Boyfriend.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Mario ends up sitting out for most of the Legion of Stationary battles after he and Boyfriend meet up. While he does get a good hit on Tape halfway through "Shifty Sticker", he and Olivia end up taped down and incapacitated for the rest of the song.
  • And Your Reward Is Clothes: As well as bonus songs, the shop also contains several new outfits for Boyfriend.
  • Back from the Dead: Colored Pencils comes back as a ghost after getting defeated by Mario to battle Boyfriend during his song.
  • Brutal Bonus Level: Out of all of the bonus songs, "M-A-X Power" stands out as being particularly tough, being a fast eurobeat song in comparison to the more laidback rest of the tracks.
  • Covers Always Lie: The week selection screens for the Red and Blue Streamers show Colored Pencils and Rubber Band just as they are in their game of origin, but that's not how they're encountered during the weeks: Colored Pencils is a ghost, while Rubber Band is missing the, well, rubber bands that make up their torso.
  • Dual Boss: The Folded Soldiers are encountered in groups of three.
  • Hero of Another Story: Mario is one up until chapter three, where he and Boyfriend finally meet up.
  • Lighter and Softer: In a huge contrast to most other FNF mods, as well as the original game, The Origami King has no sign of adult humour, instead opting for more family-friendly approaches to the story. Boyfriend's classic blueballs death is also Adapted Out, instead making him turn into origami like Girlfriend if he loses a song. Even with the more horror-themed style of the mod's cover of Monochrome, the scenario is still mostly Played for Laughs, with Toad's Super Mario 64 face being used for the jumpscares instead.
  • Nerf: "Monotoad", the cover of Friday Night Funkin' Lullaby's "Monochrome", removes the mechanics the original song had, such as the Unown codes and health drain, making the song easier overall.
  • Not Quite Dead: Rubber Band is revealed to have somehow survived his encounter with Mario, leading to his song "Elastic Entertainer". He then explodes after defeat.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Throughout the story, Boyfriend is a lot more cautious of everything going on, especially with Girlfriend having been turned into origami herself, and even breaks into tears from the possibility that she may never be turned back to normal again.
  • Optional Boss:
    • Typing "Origami Korigami" into the shop gives you a battle against Yape.
    • The battle against an undead Sea Captain Toad is this. Unlocking after finishing the first four chapters, this serves as a bonus level.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Mario's pose in the background of "Shifty Sticker" is an almost one-to-one recreation of Hank's pose in The Tricky Mod's "Hellclown", complete with Mario spinning his hammer in the same way Hank does his knife.
    • If Boyfriend gets folded by the opponents upon losing a rap battle, the symbol on his shirt is replaced by IRIS' symbol.
  • Take That!: Downplayed, but the Purple DJ Toad's soundstage during the songs has "TTYD is just OK" on it.
  • Walking Spoiler: The fact that "Monotoad" is an unlockable song in this mod, as it requires the four chapters present in the demo to be beaten first.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: "Eddy River" is a big step up from the songs in the first week, with a surprisingly fast pace, and a gimmick beyond simple Interface Screw, that being dodging the logs in the water by switching lanes lest you suffer a One-Hit Kill.
