Have you wondered: "Hmm, what if there was a mod that censored almost all of the Newgrounds stuff and made the game less visually appealing?" No? Well, I thought of that earlier and made it a reality.
Mimikeeby

Friday Night Funkin' is a simple rhythm game with colorful, chibi-style cartoon graphics, a plot about a boyfriend who raps his way into having his girlfriend's parents let him keep dating her... and references to eroticism and violence, all with profanity and horror. Despite this, Friday Night Funkin' amassed a Periphery Demographic of young children. This culminated into someone making a Roblox version of the game note  that is Bowlderised to a ridiculous degree.

ninjamuffin99 was not impressed, but Mimikeeby decided to have some fun with the idea.

Friday Night Funk (or FNF Censored) is a mod that changes a lot of the graphics to Lighter and Softer versions. They might wear more clothing, the profanity may get removed, violence may be downplayed, but everything is plenty funnier.

The mod can be found here, while the original Roblox game is here.

Cover up these tropes! There are 9-year-olds playing this game!

  • Adaptational Heroism:
  • Adaptational Modesty: Girlfriend, Daddy Dearest, and Mommy Mearest now wear more clothing. Also, Boyfriend now instead gets brokenhearted if he loses.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Senpai now just plain challenges Boyfriend to a rap battle on Roblox. He does get angry at Boyfriend upon losing, but that was just the player's brother stealing his iPad and impersonating him.
  • Adapted Out:
    • Mommy Mearest no longer appears in the original Roblox game. Her portrait was temporarily replaced with a 'Content Deleted' image or a sign. The mod has her appear, but with more modest clothes.
    • Week 6 gets rid of Zone-tan in Friday Night Funk or covers up her in Literally FNF.
    • Because the Week 7 update is not in itch.io, all of Week 7 does not appear. Moreover, Week 2 only has 2 songs.
  • all lowercase letters: Senpai and Boyfriend type this way.
  • Bathos:
  • Big, Stupid Doodoo-Head: Senpai and Spirit (actually the brother of Senpai's player in both cases) scream 'NOOB! FLITHY STINKY NOOB!' at Boyfriend.
  • The Blank: Monster is now just a big lemon. He is not even a lemon with a face, but a regular lemon. Somehow, he still manages to move and sing.
  • Bowdlerise: The mod has this trope Played for Laughs, though the original Roblox game is an Enforced Trope because Roblox has some strict content regulations.
    • Some of the Couch Gags were changed.
    • Girlfriend is now wearing long pants (red in the mod, but grey in the Roblox game).
    • If you barely hit a note, the game grade says 'BRUH'. note
    • If you lose a song, Boyfriend instead gets broken-hearted.
    • Daddy Dearest's stomach is covered with a vague grey cloth. note
    • Mommy Mearest is wearing black socks in the mod. note
    • The parents wear shirts under their coats in Week 5.
    • While Daddy Dearest still holds the Mall Santa at gunpoint, the gun is now a toy gun that has a little 'Bang!' flag from the barrel. note
    • Zone-tan is Adapted Out. note
    • The titles of the stores in the background are blank.
    • Monster is replaced with a large lemon (a cartoon lemon in the mod but, at least temporarily, a photograph of a lemon in the original).
    • Week 6 got a huge change in context: the Dating Sim is now just a Roblox game where Senpai and Boyfriend are just their player's avatars. Girlfriend cannot actually participate because her parents put parental controls on her account. Senpai and Boyfriend just want to have a fun rap battle. Senpai getting angry is actually just the player's brother taking the player's iPad, saying mean things, and forcibly changing the player's avatar.
    • Spirit is now wearing a cowboy hat.
    • The original Literally FNF game changed the titles of a couple of the songs in Week 4. The first song is called 'Satin-Paper', whereas the third song is called 'Mother'. Also, Senpai no longer blushes.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Senpai and Boyfriend discuss the work Mimikeeby put and needs to put in the mod. Boyfriend then says that they should start singing now before the player gets bored. Senpai agrees... before staring into the soul of the player.
  • Broken Record: Senpai keeps saying 'abc for bf'.
  • Censored for Comedy: Exaggerated: that is the whole point of Friday Night Funk.
  • Chuunibyou: Kaden steals his brother's iPad, says mean things, including calling others 'FLITHY STINKY NOOBS', has an avatar of a Ghastly Ghost in the Uncanny Valley, turns settings into Bleak Levels with his presence, declares Boyfriend banned from Roblox forever, and repeatedly screams 'DIE' just because Boyfriend said 'no u lol'.
  • Comically Missing the Point: What was Boyfriend's comment to Spirit bursting out of Senpai, making the setting a Bleak Level, claiming to be Mr. Flimflam, and declaring Boyfriend to be banned from Roblox forever?
Boyfriend: oh cool, i met flamingo
  • Companion Cube: Exaggerated in the original Literally FNF: Daddy Dearest, a demon, is married to a piece of papernote . The respective song is even renamed to 'Satin-Paper'.
  • Creator Cameo: Downplayed: Spirit's player is Flamingo/mrflimflam. He also mentions Kaden Fumblebottom.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Spirit erupted out of Senpai, turned the school into a bleak level, declared Boyfriend to be banned from Roblox forever, and called him a 'FLITHY STINKY NOOB'. Boyfriend's response...
    Boyfriend: no u lol
  • Digital Bikini:
    • Girlfriend wears long pants.
    • Daddy Dearest has his torso covered with grey in Week 1 and wears a green shirt in Week 5.
    • Mommy Mearest wears black socks in Week 4 and a full red shirt in Week 5.
  • Failed a Spot Check: The censorship in Friday Night Funk is not complete.
    • The song menu retains the original song names, notably in Week 4.
    • The Story Mode menu still has the original opponent graphics.
    • The Mall Santa is still staring at Mommy Mearest's chest, though, since people thought that the Mall Santa was staring at Daddy Dearest's gun, this can provide a simple excuse here.
    • The entrail-surrounded Christmas tree with the severed head on top still remains.
    • When Monster appears, the text in the signs in the background return.
    • Monster's song is still the same, complete with the Nightmare Fuel from the original game.
    • Girlfriend is without long pants in Week 6.
    • Boyfriend's original Game Over sprite is still present in Week 6.
  • Gag Dub: Friday Night Funk is one of these, censoring the racier elements while mocking how less visually appealing the results are.
  • GIS Syndrome:
    • The Roblox game temporarily replaced Monster with a plain photo of a lemon.
    • The mod has Spirit is wearing a photo of a cowboy hat, which is more obvious in the life bar.
  • Hopeless with Tech: Senpai does not even know how to change his avatar.
  • Hostile Show Takeover: During the rap battle in Week 6, Senpai, who at this point was just holding a harmless rap battle with Boyfriend in Roblox, suddenly gets angry at Boyfriend. That was actually the player's brother stealing his iPad and impersonating the player. Later, the player's brother stole his iPad again then changed the avatar to Spirit and made the background setting more hostile, all while Senpai's player pleads that his brother let him have the iPad again.
  • Ironic Echo: After losing, Senpai screams 'NOOB! FLITHY STINKY NOOB!' at Boyfriend, bu that was actually his brother stealing his iPad and impersotanig him. After another loss, Spirit's avatar explodes out of Senpai's, the background turns bleak, and Spirit screams 'NOOBS! FLITHY STINKY NOOB!' at Boyfriend.
  • Kinder and Cleaner: All profanity is gone, though the mod fails to change the title of one of the songs in Week 4.
  • Lighter and Softer:
    • Though Pico still has his gun, Daddy Dearest's gun is now a toy gun.
    • Monster is now just a plain lemon.
    • Week 6 is now recontextualised into a friendly rap battle in a Roblox game. Senpai suddenly getting angry is just a player's brother impersonating the player after stealing his iPad and changing his avatar.
  • Madness Mantra: Spirit repeatedly screams 'DIE' just because Boyfriend said No, You.
  • Mood Whiplash: ...plenty.
    • Week 5 already had a hostage situation being Played for Laughs due to Daddy Dearest using a toy gun. However, after you go through the first two songs, the mall gets dark, the Christmas tree gets covered in Gorn, and the one responsible of this appears... an actual lemon. He still sings creepy songs in that strangely soothing voice, though.
    • Week 6 has Boyfriend and Senpai just do a rap battle. After Senpai loses, he gets angry and calls Boyfriend a 'FLITHY STINKY NOOB'... which was because his brother took his iPad, changed his avatar, and said mean things to Boyfriend. After Senpai loses again, Spirit bursts out of Senpai and makes the background a Bleak Level... but Spirit is wearing a photograph of a cowboy hat while screaming 'FLITHY STINKY NOOB'. You can even see that Senpai's player and his brother are having a fight over the iPad.
  • Mythology Gag: Since Friday Night Funk is a parody of a Roblox game, Week 6 makes several references to the game.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Spirit (or rather his player) is called 'Kaden'.
  • No Indoor Voice: Spirit's text is usually written in all caps.
  • No, You: That is Boyfriend's response to Spirit calling Boyfriend a 'FLITHY STINKY NOOB'.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Senpai was sincerely nice to Boyfriend, but after losing, he got angry and called Boyfriend a 'FLITHY STINKY NOOB'... because the brother of the player of Senpai stole his iPad, changed his avatar, and flamed at Boyfriend. That is not a cover-up lie, either: once Spirit bursts out of Senpai, you can see that Senpai's player and Spirit's player are fighting over the iPad.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Senpai and Spirit are now the avatars of brothers who play Roblox.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Senpai is an attractive human, speaks in all lowercase letters, is sincerely nice to Boyfriend, yet does not know how to change his avatar. Conversely, Spirit is a Ghastly Ghost, usually has No Indoor Voice, likes to say rude things to others, yet can change the game setting.
  • Sore Loser: After losing a song, Senpai gets angry... but that is actually the brother of Senpai's player stealing his iPad and impersonating him.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Implied:
    • The Mall Santa is still held at gunpoint, but the gun is now a harmless toy gun. Moreover, Monster is no longer wearing the Mall Santa's hat. The original game had Mall Santa simply not appear.
    • While Spirit still bursts out of Senpai, all of that now happens in the context of a Roblox game with Senpai actually being the player's avatar.
  • Stylistic Suck: The reason why Mommy Mearest is a 'Content Deleted' image and Monster was a photograph of a lemon in Literally FNF was because the game-maker was not done with the game by the time the game got famous around Twitter.
  • Stunned Silence: This was Spirit's immediate reaction to Boyfriend saying No, You.
  • Suddenly Voiced: In Week 6, Boyfriend speaks actual English instead of just beeps and boops.
  • Take That!: The whole mod is this to the Bowlderisation of the game at Roblox. Just see the page quote.
  • Take That Me: During Week 6, Boyfriend mentions that the reason why Girlfriend does not say anything to Senpai is because Mimikeeby (the one who made this mod) does not know enough of coding and drawing.
  • Tamer and Chaster: The Girlfriend's family now wear more covering clothing (usually), while Boyfriend now gets brokenhearted instead if he loses.
