Sandbox / Aerial Wrestler

Go To

Examples for a proposed trope for wrestlers with an agile, aerial wrestling style, being split from misuse of I Have the High Ground (since renamed to Dramatic High Perching):

    Transplanted during wick cleanup
  • Characters.All Elite Wrestling
    • Hybrid 2 (Angelico and Jack Evans): Jack Evans specializes in high flying lucha libre.
    • Under Top Flight: Like their name suggests, their offense consist of aerial moves. Dante has especially shown this in his solo run with how much air time he can get.
  • VideoGame.Mexican Wrestling: The wrestlers can climb the turnbuckles and perform rope jumps; a hit target loses stamina and peppers while missing causes Falling Damage to oneself's macho meter. Jumpi's and La Rana's A.I.s focus on this.
  • Wrestling.AJ Lee: Has a high flying move set.
  • Wrestling.AJ Styles: Mr. Olympia used to be known for chaining together different suplexes and being a superior mat wrestler. He took to jumping on the top rope and turnbuckle more when he found himself competing for attention with much larger wrestlers, such as Abyss in Wildside. Even after he established himself on TNA Impact, Don West would negatively contrast 'little' AJ to the towering Matt Morgan (AJ's shorter but still taller than the average American man) and argue that AJ had lost his 'hunger' when he stopped flying around as much.
  • Wrestling.Alexa Bliss: Can do a somersault off the top for the hell of it. Her Finishing Move is also done from the top rope.
  • Wrestling.Aliyah: One of her signature moves is a leg drop while she's sitting on the top rope. She had previously trained as a trapeze artist at a circus school. She had been known to do a moonsault on the indies, but has yet to use it on WWE TV.
  • Wrestling.Angela Fong: She liked using springboard moves and crossbodies a lot.
  • Wrestling.Bella Twins: In her 2017 Falls Count Anywhere match, she does a springboard Pele kick to Natalya off the stage.
  • Wrestling.Bob Holly: Brought top rope attacks back into his arsenal as Hardcore Holly while wrestling on Velocity.
  • Wrestling.Bryan Danielson: He's not a 'high flyer' in the strictest sense - but two of his current signature moves are a missile front dropkick, and a flying headbutt. One time he executed the latter on Ryback, who was more than halfway across the ring front his corner. Keep in mind the WWE wrestling ring is officially twenty feet in each direction.
  • Wrestling.Bullet Club: Matt and Nick's specialty. Can perform flawless aerobatic moves. While AJ's not as young and agile as them as he used to be, he can still take to the air.
  • Wrestling.CMLL:
    • The Volador gimmick is based on a prehispanic American dance atop a tall pole/pillar.
    • Reyes del Aire, a tournament for high flyers and Pequeños Reyes del Aire, for shorter high flyers, see this play out a lot.
  • Wrestling.CM Punk: He was less known for leaping off the top rope than for just sitting there and then performing "Jackie Chan" counters on anyone trying to knock him off. He would perform various moonsaults on his most frustrating opponents though (ex, Samoa Joe) and has did various corkscrew jumps (mainly into neck breakers).
  • Wrestling.Candice Michelle: One of her preferred moves was a kick done after springing off the second rope. Another was a hair-pull smash done from jumping off the top rope.
  • Wrestling.Charlote Flair: You wouldn't think it, given that her father is notorious for failing at top-rope spots, but she is capable of a pretty good moonsault and pescado. Makes sense given her gymnast background, and all around adds to her Ace-like persona.
  • Wrestling.Cheerleader Melissa: She liked to use a lot of high flying moves while she managed the Ballards (and Spartans). Cheerleader Melissa is much more grounded as a wrestler, though she isn't above a missile drop kick and likes to attack wrestlers in downed the in corners while standing on the second or top rope.
  • Wrestling.Chick Busters: AJ who has a high flying moveset.
  • Wrestling.Chris Jericho: The finisher of Sudden Impact/Thrillseekers, which was both Lance Storm and Chris Jericho doing a missile dropkick off of the same turnbuckle.
  • Wrestling.Cody Rhodes: One of Cody's signature moves is a beautiful moonsault press.
  • Wrestling.Dragon Gate: Besides Sydal, AR Fox really stands out here, as he jumps on a lot of things. Ricochet is among the first wrestlers with a documented two full rotation moonsault. Rich Swann and Uhaa Nation don't need the high ground. CIMA used to be a high flier but became less of one as time went on.
  • Wrestling.Dramatic Dream Team: Special mention goes to Kota Ibushi and Kenny Omega's synchronized 450 splashes from the same turnbuckle.
  • Wrestling.Eddie Edwards: Flies around the ring quite a bit, although it's far from his only skill.
  • Wrestling.Elix Skipper: In his prime, Skipper was light on his feet and had a massive arsenal of high flying attacks. He could even do Daniels' BME.
  • Wrestling.Ember Moon: She favours lots of springboard moves and attacks from the top rope.
  • Wrestling.Evan Bourne: The staple of Bourne's game - arguably more so than anyone on the WWE Roster. He can not only do moonsaults anywhere, he also does them in radically different form depending on whether he is standing in the ring, on the top rope or spring boarding off the second (which he's done with one leg).
  • Wrestling.Eve Torres: Uses a moonsault as a finisher. Also uses a springboard enziguri from the middle rope. Sometimes a crossbody as well.
  • Wrestling.FMW: Hayabusa was the top high-flyer in FMW. This promotion wasn't afraid of things much higher than the top turnbuckle either, like the dreaded scaffold.
  • Wrestling.Gail Kim: Has planted her feet atop the six sides of steel, pretty high ground. She once defeated Jacqueline with a crossbody off the top of the cage.
  • Wrestling.Hiromu Takahashi: He loves taking to the sky to bring the pain to the opponent. His most frequent move is a senton from the post all the way to the outside.
  • Wrestling.Ivory: In her 2003 face run, she went to the top rope far more than she had previously. One match saw her hitting a crossbody to Molly Holly, Jazz and Victoria on the outside.
  • Wrestling.Jay Lethal: Especially as "Hydro", whose initial gimmick was doing nothing but fancy flips and as part of the X division, which was focal to TNA's "High Flying" branding during the Fox Sports Net and webcast eras.
  • Wrestling.Jimmy Wang Yang: His Finishing Move, Yang Time, is a moonsault. He's also used Hayabusa's phoenix splash and "Akio" used a corkscrew moonsault, not that any causal viewer ever saw it.
  • Wrestling.Jinsei Shinzaki: Used the diving headbutt off the top and sometimes finished matches with a top rope moonsault. He also debuted the Asai Moonsault on WWF TV.
  • Wrestling.Jushin Thunder Liger: He was known for frequent jumping to the top turnbuckle once his Jushin Liger gimmick really got going. However, he stopped doing so quite as frequently around the time his tumor was discovered.
  • Wrestling.Katey Harvey: When she works as a face, she usually busts out a top rope move. Rough Stuff could usually rely on her to do so in their matches.
  • Wrestling.Kazza: Utilises a lot of headscissors, hurricanranas and crossbodies in her matches.
  • Wrestling.Ken Anderson: Both the Green Bay Plunge and the Kenton Bomb are done from the top rope.
  • Wrestling.Kenny Omega: He can fly, although not as much since taking over the Bullet Club and moving to the heavyweight ranks.
  • Wrestling.Kenta Kobayashi: He used to wrestle a much more "high flying/super junior expected" style, with top rope cross body blocks as well as flippy take lucha libre takeovers, than the "kicks heads" manner he became known for.
  • Wrestling.Kia Stevens: Used a diving senton to win the AWA World Women's title after several amazing presses failed to put away then champion Nanae Takahashi.
  • Wrestling.Kota Ibushi: He seems to have a thing for moonsaulting off balconies, when he has a chance. Besides the match at Budokan, he's leapt off the second-level balcony at Korakuen Hall a few times as well.
  • Wrestling.Luna Vachon: Both of her finishing moves, the "Luna Bomb" and Luna Eclipse, were top rope splashes. So in rare event one of them did not work you'd see Luna scale the ropes multiple times.
  • Wrestling.Marc Mero: He hit the first-ever shooting star press in WWE history, during his match with Goldust at SummerSlam 1996.
  • Wrestling.Mercedes Martinez: Mercedes became more of a brawler than high flier overtime but when she flies she makes it count. Take her 2008 WSU Army Of One Falls Count Anywhere match with Angel Orsini, where she threw Orsini from one balcony to another and then jumped after her. Lost the match, won a standing ovation. She'd follow this up by diving off a steel cage onto Orsini when she got another shot at the WSU title, but Lea Morrison, Kylie Pierce and Radiant Rain all ran out to ensure Martinez lost again.
  • Wrestling.Mickie James: Defeated Tara on the December 9, 2010 TNA Impact with a Lou Thesz Press from the top of a cage!
  • Wrestling.National Wrestling Alliance: The first NWA World Light Heavyweight Champion Gypsy Joe may have also been the very first man to deliver a splash from the top of a steel cage, and was the best known case until Jimmy Snuka.
  • Wrestling.Ricky Steamboat: Particularly known for his top rope crossbody, a seemingly outdated move which became a lot more popular in WWE when he came out of retirement to wrestle Chris Jericho.
  • Wrestling.Ring Of Honor: The Scramble Cage has extra platforms for the wrestlers to stand on, providing more elevation than a turnbuckle.
  • Wrestling.Rob Van Dam: He tends to jump to the top turnbuckle five or more times in a single match, sometimes in rapid succession.
  • Wrestling.Sabu: It would be easier to list the moves Sabu uses that DON'T involve him flying through the air.
  • Wrestling.Sasha Banks: Used to use a top rope dropkick or Frog Splash.
  • Wrestling.Seth Rollins: Seems to break a high-altitude spot once per PPV.
  • WRestling.Shane Mc Mahon: From a simple turnbuckle to the top of the Titantron, jumping from high places is Shane's trademark.
  • Wrestling.Super Crazy: He could fly from anywhere. One of his ECW trademarks was doing moonsaults off the balcony.
  • Wrestling.Takuya Sugi: One of his signature moves is a moonsault from a balcony a la Super Crazy.
  • Wrestling.Taylor Wilde: Loved to fly, particularly for those elevated arm drags she picked up in Monterrey, or a missile drop kick...Mala-missile-kick.
  • WRestling. The Wood Brothers: Lewis is prone to athletic moves such as moonsaults, dropkicks etc. Lorcan to a lesser extent, but he does do a few missile dropkicks and top-rope elbow drops.
  • Wrestling.The Young Bucks:
    • Two-thirds of their most frequent finisher, More Bang For Your Buck, is one brother hitting a 450 splash on their opponent followed immediately by the other hitting a moonsault and then going for the pin.
    • Whenever they break out the Meltzer Driver, fans get to see one of the brothers do a 450 splash flip to help the other brother spike their opponent in a kneeling piledriver.
  • Wrestling.Toni Storm: She has quite a few aerial offense, most notably the top rope leg drop.
  • Wrestling.WOW Women Of Wrestling: Jungle Grrrl was known for climbing up on things, even she wasn't using her signature superplex or diving splash.
  • Wrestling. Will Ospreay: Most of his offense is comprised of aerial blows and agile strikes. In fact he's become famous for his high-flying moves.
  • Wrestling.Xavier Woods: No stranger to flipping and flying around a ring.

    Transplanted from the wick check
  • Taiji Ishimori: He is known for his amazing acrobatic feats, be it moonsaults or 450 splashes.
  • Pac: [...]smaller, heroic, aerial wrestling style, and references within his gimmick to comic book superheroes (although that's not exclusively a kid thing, especially nowadays).
  • Taka Michinoku: The whole purpose of introducing a "light heavyweight" title was for the WWF to compete with the the high fliers of WCW.
  • Chikara (Lince): Regularly used moonsaults and the Shooting Star Press.
  • Mikey Whipwreck: Whipwreck worked as part of the ring crew for free on the deal he could have "fun" in the ring before and after shows. Heyman decided to sign Whipwreck after watching him practice aerial maneuvers.
  • Attitude Era D'Lo Brown The group's, light-footed, trash-talking, head-shaking Lightning Bruiser.
  • Pac: Let's just put it this way: he is known as "The Man That Gravity Forgot."
  • Jillian Hall: Her high flying moves were neglected when she moved from OVW to WWE but she did finish Mickie James with a 450 splash at an OVW event where she was representing WWE SmackDown while Mickie was representing Raw. She would later bring back her top turnbuckle moves during tag team matches on Raw. This is possibly due to her primarily wrestling as a heel jobber.
  • Prime Time Players: (A former "Something Completely Different" example) The revived tag division consisted mostly of high flyers and other smaller, quicker types.

Pro Wrestling
  • The Undertaker has done this on numerous occasions. Easily the coolest was during the first Undertaker/Kane feud in which Kane, Undertaker's "brother", is starting to menace female wrestler Sable. The Undertaker appears on top of the Titantron, proceeds to cut a promo on Kane for their upcoming WrestleMania XIV match, and ends it by summoning a bolt of lightning, which summons a standing casket with an effigy of Kane within it that then bursts into flames.
  • Similarly, Sting, who started doing mind games similar to The Undertaker during his "Crow" phase, could often be found looking down on the rest of WCW from the rafters.
  • The "high flyer" style incorporates wrestlers perching on the top rope before jumping off onto their opponent. While the Ur-Example, at least outside of Mexico, is most likely Edouard Carpentier, the Trope Codifier is definitely Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka. Wrestlers that fit this include Shawn Michaels, Jeff Hardy, 2 Cold Scorpio, Rey Mysterio Jr., Evan Bourne, AJ Styles, John Morrison, Low Ki, and Rob Van Dam.
  • The more extreme form involves jumping from the top of a steel cage or ladder in the appropriate gimmick match. Ring of Honor's scramble cage has platforms designed specifically for this.
  • CMLL has at least two tournaments specifically for high flyers, Reyes del Aire for men of multiple weight classes and Pequeños Reyes del Aire, which is usually limited to those 1.52 meters or shorter, sometimes as high as 1.72 meters when they're being more generous.
  • The recurring Volador gimmick seen on the Mexican wrestling circuit is a reference to an ancient dance performed by several pre Hispanic American groups that involved a man dancing on top of a pillar or pole while several other men dived off of it. It substitutes ring posts for the usual setup.
  • Jack Evans gained memetic status for leaping off some compressed bleachers and disarming Juventud Guerrera of a chair in midair...because he did it in an actual fight, not a part of an AAA match.
  • Dramatic Dream Team: Special mention goes to Kota Ibushi and Kenny Omega's synchronized 450 splashes from the same turnbuckle.
  • Progress Wrestling Will Ospreay, Mark Andrews, Flash Morgan Webster and El Ligero (before his Heel Turn) were the most notable high flyers in the company.
  • The Magnificent Fireman Luther Black has been lowered into arenas by the aerial platform of a fire engine, and yes, he has dove off of it to at least one opponent too.
  • Shane McMahon is famous for his willingness to jump off from a (very) high place, despite being the son of Vince McMahon and not a regular in-ring performer. This ranges from a simple turnbuckle, to the top of the Titantron (the big-ass screen above the entrance ramp), to the top of Hell in a Cellnote . He's considered the craziest badass of the McMahon family for a reason.
  • In his prime, Elix Skipper was light on his feet and had a massive arsenal of high flying attacks. He could even do Christopher Daniels' BME.
