Class Trial 41

A Despair Disease Outbreak at Hope's Peak Academy ends with 3 victims and 3 separate killers.

Tropes for the Forty-First Class Trial
  • Asshole Victim: One of the victims, Byakuya, turns out to have masterminded a plot to kill two classmates with Toko as an accomplice.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Partway through the trial, Shirokuma brings a Dolly that had been hidden at the scene of the crime, leaving Nagito to lampshade how strange it is that nobody found it during the actual investigation.
  • Fixing the Game: Byakuya rigs a game with Fuyuhiko in which they would drink from glasses where one was poisoned.
  • Foregone Conclusion: The Trial was nicknamed "The Phi Killer Trial" by the host, in reference to one of the players who did indeed prove to be one of the killers.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Subverted. Fuyuhiko agreed to play Byakuya in a game where they gambled their lives so that one of them would die to end the Despair Disease outbreak, but it turned out to be a con on Byakuya's part to kill Fuyuhiko.
  • Literal Split Personality: Genocide Jack is given a separate body while Toko is executed as one of the blackeneds.
  • Jigsaw Puzzle Plot: All of the participants receive only little snippets of memory regarding what they had been doing before the first Body Discover Announcement played.
  • Mind Virus: The Despair Disease leaves the participants with only a handful of memories regarding their infections
  • The Plague: A particularly serious case of Despair Disease leaves everybody except for Byakuya and Fuyuhiko infected.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Peko impulsively killed Byakuya after finding him over Fuyuhiko's body with bloody scissors.

Class Trial 42

As the students share scary stories with one another, Hajime and Chiaki are murdered, killed in the same way at the same time and yet found on two different islands.

Tropes for the Forty-Second Class Trial

Class Trial 43

When Hajime's house is destroyed, a mock trial is held by Monomi and the students to find out who the bomber was. However, it is merely a prelude to the real murder that occurs days later when Mukuro Ikusaba is found beaten and shot. This Trial received a Sequel

Tropes for the Forty-Third Class Trial
  • Accidental Murder: Komaru shot Mukuro while trying to save her from Izuru Kamakura
  • Action Prologue: The trial uniquely featured a mini-trial set before the actual murder that the participants had to solve.
  • Big Bad: Izuru Kamakura acts as one, having received the Escape Switch from Danganronpa If and using it as a tool to reawaken the memories of the other former Ultimate Despairs.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Hajime, Nagito, Peko, Nekomaru, and Fuyuhiko turn out to be Ultimate Despairs, with Kazuichi in the process of regaining his memories too during the trial.
  • Darker and Edgier: The trial is designed to make the ending with a Mass Execution the happier option.
  • Downer Ending: Komaru is executed for an accidental murder, leaving the Despairs free to continue wreaking havoc and convert more of the students to their cause.
  • The Extremist Was Right: Nagito's attempt to blow up Izuru in his own cottage would've saved a lot of trouble if successful.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Many of the students attempt one, intentionally voting incorrectly to mass-execute the Despairs along with themselves
  • The Needs of the Many: Most of the remaining unbrainwashed students agree to attempt a mass execution, although there are enough holdouts that the Despairs are able to get Komaru voted up.
  • Neutral No Longer: After playing both sides, Nagito decides to rejoin the Ultimate Despairs when they win the trial.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Sonia decides to press the strange button that Byakuya found without giving Nagito a chance to warn her of how bad that'd be.
  • Split-Personality Takeover: Hajime, Nagito, Peko, Nekomaru, and Fuyuhiko.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: Mahiru and Kazuichi choose to willingly join the Ultimate Despairs and regain their memories rather than sacrifice themselves.
  • Token Good Teammate: Surprisingly, Nagito proves to be one among the Ultimate Despairs, having made an attempt on Izuru's life to at least give the other students a chance of taking them down.
  • Took a Level in Cynic: Makoto takes one when he decides that the Ultimate Despairs are too big of a danger to be kept alive.
  • The Worf Effect: Although Mukuro was able to take down Peko, Fuyuhiko, and Nekomaru, Izuru proves to be too much for her.

Tropes for Class Trial 43- 2
The Ultimate Despairs have taken over Jabberwock Island. But when a single night results in 4 deaths, another face-off ensues

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Aoi Asahina has joined the Ultimate Despairs after being brainwashed by Izuru making use of Ryota Mitarai's Animator Talent to create a Brainwashing Video.
  • Darker and Edgier: Possibly the darkest trial in the site's history, featuring cannibalism and torture
  • Dwindling Party: Byakuya, Toko, and Hagakure end up being the only survivors after winning the trial.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Makoto, Ibuki, Nagito, and Chiaki perform more successful ones this time, forcing a Mass Execution
  • I Ate WHAT?!: Chiaki is force-fed a meat dish made from Mahiru's dead body.
  • Shoot the Dog: Makoto's allies decide to kill two more Ultimate Despairs to get another chance at a trial.
  • Stupid Evil: Hina was told to prove her brainwashing successful and chose to kill another Despair, leaving them down a critical vote for the trial.
    • Fuyuhiko and Peko also indulge in this when Peko gets accidently killed by a confused Hagakure while they were framing him for one of the murders Makoto's allies had committed, needlessly costing them another vote and giving Hagakure more incentive to go along with Makoto's plan.
  • Taking You with Me: When Izuru manages to survive Junko's execution and wounds her, she decides to blow up the courtroom with them both inside.
  • Xanatos Gambit: While they likely had enough votes to win the trial either way, Makoto, Byakuya, and Toko take steps to hide which of them actually killed Kazuichi and Sonia, even lying to their own allies about it.

Class Trial 44

Nagito takes advantage of a Halloween Party to destroy the Air Purifier and make everybody desperate to escape. His plan succeeds, leaving Nagito unconscious and Makoto dead when the killer strikes.

  • Companion Cube: Kazuichi proudly creates an automated skeleton prop known as Mr. Spooky
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Teruteru makes an attempt to peep that results in him being tied up and forgotten in a closet. When Monokuma finally brings him out partway through the trial, a debate ensues over who will untie him as nobody wants to be the one to incur whatever perverted comment he makes.
  • The Peeping Tom: Teruteru
  • Sore Loser: Celeste
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Celeste attempts to use a twisted ankle as an excuse as to why she couldnt' be the killer.

  • Villain Team-Up: The two rival characters of the games, Byakuya and Nagito, cooperate to murder Makoto.

Class Trial 47

Tropes for the Forty-Seventh Class Trial
  • Asshole Victim: Downplayed, considering the circumstances, but Mikan was plotting to murder one of her own patients.
  • I Let You Win: To some extent. Akane admits that she never planned on winning the trial and subtly hints at her own guilt before she's accused
  • Shirtless Scene: Although it isn't visible in the format, Hajime does end up taking off his shirt to confirm that he has none of the injuries that the killer would've received, leading to several unique reactions from the cast.
  • Smarter Than They Look: Akane
  • The Summation: The trial ends with Akane giving one before accusing herself.
  • Sympathetic Murderer: Akane
  • Varying Competency Alibi: Although some question Akane's ability to effectively cover up a murder, she defies this in the end.
  • Vigilante Execution: Realizing that Mikan was going to murder somebody, Akane kills her before she can do so.

Tropes for Class Trial 47- 2
Outside of the Barn, Toko Fukawa is found trampled to death.

  • Heroic BSoD: Komaru spends much of the trial in a sustained one.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Several students start planning a celebration after winning the trial, which Sonia and even Nagito point out to be pretty cruel given the deaths of Gundham and Toko.
  • It's All My Fault: Komaru eventually confesses to believing herself responsible for the stampede that killed Toko.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Gundham's justification for murdering Toko.
  • Pet the Dog: Despite usually being portrayed as a bully towards her, Nagito does assure her that she couldn't have be the one who killed Toko when she makes her confession.

  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Gundham's claims of seeing water turn black turn out to be accurate instead of being one of his usual delusions. He's also the one who accuses Mahiru when she was closest to winning.
  • Death Is Cheap: It is revealed that the culprit will win the right to set one player free from the virtual world and that the victims are being kept alive elsewhere so that they can be set free as well.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Mikan made an attempt to poison Hiyoko.
  • Frame-Up: Mahiru was attempting to frame Mukuro during her plan, even disguising herself as Mukuro at one point.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Mahiru came close to pinning the blame on the dead Mukuro.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Gundham ends up being unwittingly responsible for Mahiru's plan claiming a second victim.
  • Odd Friendship: Several such as Hiyoko/Gundham and Fuyuhiko/Nagito pop up as the day goes on.
  • Poisoned Chalice Switcheroo: Gundham swaps around some drinks he believed to be poisoned.
  • Sadistic Choice: With the reveal of the motive and knowing that they won't be executed for voting wrongly, the players are given the choice of either: 1. Executing Mahiru to guarantee that Mukuro and Sonia will wake up or 2. Letting her live and trusting that Mahiru'll use her reward to save Sonia, knowing that it will kill Mukuro and that Sonia will die if Mahiru breaks her word.
  • Sympathetic Murderer: Mahiru only intended to kill Sonia and use the motive to resurrect her outside of the Neo World Program.
  • Take Care of the Kids: After losing the trial, Mahiru asks Gundham to look after Hiyoko. Gundham agrees, but notes that his role in exposing Mahiru will probably make Hiyoko unlikely to accept that.
