"He always brought us flowers on our birthdays, so after he passed away, we started picking flowers for each other. And then we'd visit his grave, and me and my mom would spend the day together. It's nice. But this year, I-I'm not with her, and... I don't have any flowers. And when you told me about the problem with your dad, I don't know. Maybe I was jealous or just needed a distraction. I was dumb. I'm sorry."
Luz, apologizing to Amity for her off behavior.

Original air date: 4/9/2022

Production code: 214

Amity wants to prove herself to her father, and Luz thinks the Bonesborough Brawl is the perfect way to do it.

Tropes:

  • Absent-Minded Professor: Alador as usual, which is made worse by how Belos is keeping him busy making Abomatons. He hadn't even noticed that Amity and Luz are dating until Amity actually tells him at the end of the episode, and is rather fascinated by Eda's harpy transformation.
  • Accomplice by Inaction: Amity calls Alador out on this near the end of the episode, how her mom made all her decisions for her and her dad just "went along with it," supporting whatever his wife wanted without ever thinking or asking what Amity wanted.
  • Acting Unnatural: Luz tries to bury the emotional pain of her father's death in busywork and other distractions, which causes her to act even stranger than normal. Everyone immediately sees through the act.
  • An Aesop: If there's something that's bothering you, it's okay to talk to your loved ones about it. Even if you don't want them to worry about you, trying to hide your issues and only letting them fester will just make it worse.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Eda and King refer to Edric as "Blight Brother" because his real name is too close to Eda's.
  • All for Nothing: Warden Wrath has been demoted, so all the effort Eda and Edric went through to make a potion to interrogate him with was for naught. The only benefit is that the botched recipe is something that Eda can sell.
  • Amazon Chaser: Amity is noticeably blushing when Luz makes her Big Entrance as the "Spellraiser" for her first match.
  • Appropriated Appellation: Amity uses her much-hated nickname of "Mittens" as an alias for the Brawl.
  • Battle Aura: One of Luz's opponents in the Bonesborough Brawl is an elderly demon... who promptly snaps her cane and conjures a Dragon Ball Z-style aura around herself.
  • Bittersweet Ending: While Warden Wrath didn't know much, only that there's some dissension in the ranks regarding the Day of Unity, Eda still has a new potion recipe to sell and gives Edric a much-needed confidence boost. On Amity's side of things, while Alador's interference at the last minute keeps her from winning the Bonesborough Brawl, she still manages to get a little closer to him like she'd hoped. And finally, although Luz still misses her mom and can't see her dad's grave, she and Amity make their own ritual by sending some flowers off into the sky.
  • BlasĂ© Boast: After beating Warden Wrath, the reigning Bonesborough Brawl champ, in mere seconds and with no visible effort, Alador is offered the championship belt. His response is a dismissive, "I already have one."
  • Breaking Bad News Gently: When Luz finally reveals to Amity the reason she's been acting weird all day is because it's the anniversary of the day her dad died, she keeps up her cheery facade and prefaces it by saying it's "totally not an issue anymore". Amity doesn't believe it even for a second.
  • Brick Joke: Amity gets rid of her Abomaton chaperone by commanding it to go look for a "rare and difficult to find emerald dagger" at the night market. A while later, it returns to reveal that it actually did end up finding such an item after all.
  • The Bus Came Back: The wild bat that Edric caught in "Adventures in the Elements" finally returns, with it being confirmed that he did indeed keep it as a pet and named it "Batric."
  • Calling the Old Man Out:
    • Amity finally stands up to her father in this episode. Unlike Odalia, Alador is impressed and complements his daughter for doing so, extending an olive branch by saying he thinks purple hair suits her more than green.
    • Edric and Emira briefly chide Alador for not accepting Amity's help with restraining the mutated Warden Wrath.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Luz has trouble telling anyone that the reason she's acting strangely today is because it's the anniversary of the day her father died.
  • Chaotic Good: Luz admits to being this In-Universe when she suggests that Amity skip the coven tryouts to take part in the brawl.
  • Chekhov's Skill: At the start of the episode, Luz demonstrates a new glyph combo that slows someone to a stop right before they would otherwise fall to the ground. It comes in handy during the Brawl.
  • Clark Kenting: Amity disguises her appearance using concealment charms provided by her siblings. She gives herself a fancy abomination-themed dress ensemble with gold earrings, complete with cateye glasses.
  • Connected All Along: While it was already shown that they attended Hexside at the same time and we aren't given any specifics, this episode reveals that Eda and Alador have some history together. And that they don't get along.
  • Continuity Cameo:
    • When Amity is showing Luz a photo of her father winning a past Bonesborough Brawl, Odalia is shown smiling in the crowd while Darius is booing him. Raine can also be seen in the back with Eda.
    • When Camila is shown at the end of the episode, Vee can be seen behind her preparing some food.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • After Hunter created his own Penstagram account back in "Any Sport in a Storm", Willow gave Luz his contact info, hoping she can get information from him about Emperor Belos's plans.
    • Hunter's account name RULERZREACHF4N indicates he's a big fan of Luz and King's novel from "Senses and Insensitivity".
    • Luz spends most of the episode wearing Eda's old letterman jacket from "Wing It Like Witches". She also brings up when Amity hurt her leg at the end of that episode.
    • Luz mentions wanting a griffin egg for breakfast, which had been mentioned by Eda in "Separate Tides" to be one of the few Demon Realm foods she can safely eat.
    • Eda brings up Raine "acting weird" at the Coven Day Parade.
    • Eda also taunts Warden Wrath about how her student defeated him twice (in the premiere and finale episodes of Season 1), and she and King remind him that they don't like him for cutting off her head, stealing his crown, and imprisoning Luz, which happened in the former episode.
    • The bat that Edric tried to eat back in "Adventures in the Elements" has become his pet, and he affectionately calls it "Batric", just like he said he would.
    • The fact that King erroneously refers to Warden Wrath as Eda's ex-boyfriend, which he did in "A Lying Witch and a Warden" when the Warden confessed to having a crush on her, comes up again when Edric refers to the Warden and Raine as Eda's "ex and other ex", and Eda irritatedly states that Wrath is not her ex and tells King to stop telling people that, cracking him up.
    • Luz uses a fire glyph to send her first opponent flying off into the distance, just as she did to Hunter back in "Hunting Palismen".
    • One of the ingredients for the "Blabber Serum" is the spit of a skin-eating fairy, which Luz ran into in the first episode, while Edric tries to help heat it up using fire bee honey (fire bees having debuted in "Separate Tides").
    • After Amity runs away, Luz finds her by the tree produced during their battle with Grometheus in "Enchanting Grom Fright". Before launching her attack on the mutated Wrath, Luz fans out her glyph papers, just as she did in the same episode.
    • Eda tells Alador that she knows how he and Odalia used Luz as a demonstration subject back in "Escaping Expulsion".
    • Eda hands Edric a "Bad Girl Coven" t-shirt that Luz designed a long time ago (to which Emira jumps out in front of him and yells that she wants one too).
  • Crush Blush: Aside from the obvious example of Luz and Amity, Odalia of all people is shown blushing at Alador in an old photo of him winning the Bonesborough Brawl.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Edric, who takes part in the episode's B-plot by helping Eda.
  • Declaration of Personal Independence: When Amity gets fed up with Alador not letting her fight, she forces her way into the fight with Warden Wrath and declares she's making her own decisions from now on. For his part, Alador accepts her choices and promises to talk to Odalia.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Edric tries to reduce the Blabber Serum's brewing time by adding fire bee honey to increase the temperature. Problem is, fire bee honey is a potion ingredient in and of itself, and adding it turns the batch into a mutagenic Psycho Serum.
  • Disappeared Dad: This episode reveals that Luz's father is dead, and has been dead for quite some time. The anniversary of his death happens to be on the same day as the Bonesborough Brawl. Luz ends up Acting Unnatural because she tries to keep the pain of her father's death hidden from everyone, but everyone sees through it instantly.
  • Double-Meaning Title: The episode title refers both Amity's attempts to connect to her father through Bonesborough Brawl, and Luz trying to "reach out" to her deceased father through a ritual she used to do with her mom.
  • Downer Beginning: In the Cold Open, Luz wakes up only to find a note on her phone about an event with her mom, which makes her depressed as she ignores it. It turns out that she has a very good reason for it.
  • Due to the Dead: Luz has a yearly ritual where she spends the whole day with her mother and leaves flowers at her father's grave. Since she doesn't have a working portal door at the moment, she's unable to perform the visit or even be with her mother, which leaves her off balance for the majority of the episode. At the end, Amity attaches some flowers to an abomination balloon as a makeshift version and we also see Camila putting up a fresh flower on her windowsill.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: Invoked. It's revealed during a conversation with her father that the reason why Amity chose purple as her new hair color back in "Through the Looking Glass Ruins" is because it's the color of abominations.
  • Epic Fail: Amity tries to make a glyph on-screen for the first time to grow some flowers, but it's misshapen and all she manages to grow is a thorny vine. As Luz explains, you have to have an idea of what you want before activating it.
  • Eye Am Watching You: When Alador expresses interest in studying Eda's harpy form, she transforms back into a witch and irritably states she knows about Odalia trying to kill Luz during the Blights' weapons expo and will be keeping an eye on him; making the "I'm watching you" gesture and jabbing him in the goggles.
  • The Faceless: Although this is the episode where we learn what happened to Luz's dad, we still get to see only one obscured photo showing just a small portion of his face.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Right before Luz tells Amity that today is the anniversary of the day her dad died, we see the reminder she was getting on her phone the whole day was to visit the Gravesfield Graveyard.
  • Flowers of Romance: When talking about her father, Luz mentions how he would always bring her mother flowers on her birthday. Also downplayed at the end of the episode when Luz and Amity gather flowers to honor his memory, since -while they aren't doing it for romantic reasons- it's portrayed as an intimate moment for the young couple.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: When Amity is reconciling with her dad at the end, Alador says he'll try and be more involved in her life and tries to finish with a hug, but Amity shakes his hand instead, saying "it's a start".
  • Forgot About His Powers: As a sign of how much the day has affected her, when Luz tries to gather flowers instead of using a plant glyph, Amity has to try and use one before she remembers that she could just do that instead.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus:
    • If you pause at Alador's old Bonesborough Brawl photo, you will notice some familiar faces among the audience and background:
      • Warden Wrath and Darius are booing Alador.
      • Odalia is seen smirking and blushing.
      • Eda and Raine are hanging out and goofing around on the skull in the back.
    • Early in the episode, when Amity is talking to her dad, Alador can be seen examining a book from Darius about Abomination creation, regarding it with contempt. During a brief shot where the back cover is visible, Darius' autograph can be seen on the back cover, implying that he specifically sent it to Alador just to tick him off.
  • Freudian Excuse Denial: Played With. While Luz's actions stemmed from the anniversary of her father's death, she admits that she can't use that as an excuse and sincerely apologizes to Amity.
  • Fusion Dance: Alador and Amity merge his Abomaton with her Abomination to combat the mutated Warden Wrath, creating a giant Abomination.
  • Glamour: Edric and Emira use concealment charms to make themselves look presentable without actually having to go through the effort. Without them, they're quite unkempt. They loan theirs to Amity to disguise her for the Brawl.
  • Grave-Marking Scene: Luz mentions to Amity that she and her mother have a yearly tradition of visiting her father's grave on the anniversary of his death. Her emotional turmoil from being unable to do so this year forms the primary conflict of the episode.
  • He Is Not My Boyfriend: Or rather, Warden Wrath is not one of Eda's exes. King gets a kick out of referring to Warden Wrath as such. It got so annoying that Eda had to just stop referring to Wrath and Raine as her exes.
  • Hey, You!: Eda insists on calling Edric "Blight Brother", believing that his actual name is too similar to hers for her liking.
  • Hidden Depths: Edric has a surprising talent for beast-keeping. He also shows some hidden self-esteem issues. Meanwhile, Emira is shown to be practicing healing magic.
  • Inner Monologue: Played for Drama. On two occasions, Luz is left alone with her thoughts, which is depicted in this manner. It clearly makes her uncomfortable and contributes to her irrational behaviour.
  • Ironic Echo: When Alador sends Amity out of his lab early on the episode, he cuts her off with a "You're welcome". Later, when he tries to stop her from helping him take down the transformed Wrath, she cuts him off with a "You're welcome" of her own.
  • Keep the Reward: Once Alador subdues Wrath, he's immediately awarded the belt, but he's bluntly not interested because he already has one and only came to drag Amity home after missing the coven tryouts. Between being inconvenienced and the amount of trouble Amity was going to be in, a second belt isn't even worth that to him.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Amity's Bonesborough Brawl outfit is an abomination-colored dress, a red mask, gold earrings, and heels.
  • Kill It with Ice: Because fire bee honey caused Wrath's mutation, Edric reasons that cold may reverse it. This gives Luz the idea to cover him with a giant pile of snow, created using a combination of her ice and invisibility glyphs.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: Alador's old Bonesborough Brawl photo shows Odalia smirking at him and blushing after he'd won, and Amity similarly blushes after Luz's Big Entrance. Guess Blight women like their partners to be able to kick serious butt.
  • Living Battery: The Cold Open reveals that Luz has been keeping her phone charged by using a jar of lightning bugs by her bedside to provide electricity.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: When Eda finally gets a chance to interrogate Warden Wrath about Raine and the Day of Unity, he claims he has no idea what's going on because he got demoted a while back for stealing his coworkers' lunches.
  • Mama Bear: Eda's protectiveness of Luz comes up in her brief interaction with Alador, telling him that she's keeping an eye on him after the events of "Escaping Expulsion".
  • Meaningful Echo: After Alador resolves to try and be a better parent, Amity tells him "It's a start", just like Willow said to her in "Understanding Willow" when they started to rebuild their friendship.
  • Mundane Utility: Edric and Emira use concealment stones to hide their unkempt appearances without putting any effort into actually tidying themselves up.
  • Nerds Are Sexy: Luz finds Amity's disguise (complete with glasses and Prim and Proper Bun) to be "So pretty!"
  • Next Sunday A.D.: The episode aired on April 9th, 2022, while a calendar visible at the end in the Noceda household indicates the episode takes place on August 22nd. Although the year isn't shown, the positioning of the dates (the 31st of August falling on a Wednesday) indicates it's also probably 2022.
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: The Demon Hunters have gone from animal control officers to the managers of a fighting tournament in this episode.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • Luz assaults the Abomaton to keep it from reaching Amity, setting off an alarm that summons Alador.
    • Edric got too impatient at the blabber serum not being ready, so he adds fire-bee honey to speed the heating up. Unfortunately, it instead results in a mutation potion being created.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: Alador wastes no time subduing Warden Wrath, declining the championship belt, and then telling off Amity for disobeying him. When it comes to being deceived or being disobeyed, he doesn't mess around.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • We don't actually get to see Luz discovering her new glyph combination or figuring out what it does, just her demonstrating it to King and Eda.
    • Warden Wrath has been demoted for stealing lunches from coworkers.
  • Not Helping Your Case: When Amity calls Alador out on not being involved in her life, she states she doesn't even know if he's aware that she's dating Luz. When he expresses surprise at this and asks if Luz is Eda's kid, Amity flushes and turns away, stating that's a perfect example of how out-of-touch he is with his kids' lives.
  • Not Quite the Right Thing: After Luz tells Eda and King she is a little depressed, because she's missing a yearly "ritual" with her mom in the human world (without further explaining the details), they suggest she find something to distract herself to cheer her up. This would work well if the issue was just more of Luz missing her mom, but with just how serious the situation is for Luz, all those distractions are just short-term and do nothing but bottle her pain up rather than actually coping with it, and her attempts to find new ones cause some friction with her relationship with Amity.
  • Not the Fall That Kills You…: Defied. Luz has developed a new glyph combo that arrests a target's fall by causing it to levitate for a few moments just before they would have hit the ground from a fall, effectively making a magic parachute.
  • Obviously Not Fine: Everyone can tell Luz is acting weird in this episode and that she's trying to avoid something, but the latter insists that it's nothing. It's only after Amity runs off to the Grom tree that Luz explains her why she's not herself: the Bonesborough Brawl happens to be the same day as the anniversary of her father's death, and she's upset she can't do her yearly ritual with her mother to honor his memory.
  • Old Shame: In-Universe, Alador considers his days taking part in the Bonesborough Brawl to be this, calling it "nonsense".
  • One-Steve Limit: Eda insists on calling Edric "Blight Brother" rather than his real name because it's too similar to her own name.
  • One-Winged Angel: The botched Blabber Serum causes Warden Wrath to transform into a hulking monster capable of effortlessly overpowering Alador's Abomaton and even Eda's Harpy form. After he's returned to normal, Eda happily decides to make a profit selling the potion.
  • Oven Logic: After Eda gets frustrated with the Blabber Serum taking too long and says it needs more heat, Edric decides to remedy this by adding fire bee honey. As the honey is an ingredient in itself, adding it to the serum completely changes the effect, causing Wrath to mutate into a monster.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise:
    • Amity is so embarrassed by her Abomaton chaperone that she (not-so-convincingly) disguises it with lots of stuff, including a tutu, rubber duck arm floaties, a feather boa, a button-up shirt, a top hat, gloves, dog slippers, and a paper drawing taped right on its face. And the Abomaton slowly loses the disguise.
    • Amity's disguise at the Bonesborough Brawl consists of a wardrobe change, glasses, and her hair being tied in a bun. It doesn't fool Alador for a moment.
  • Parental Obliviousness: Due to being so absorbed in his work, Alador is unaware of several recent changes in Amity's life, such as her dating Luz, whom he thinks is Eda's child.
  • Parents as People: What Alador is shown to be. He's domineering towards Amity and dismisses her interests, but he feels he's looking out for her future and in his own way is trying to support her goals. He's just not that great at being aware of what his daughter really wants.
  • Partial Transformation: Eda shows she's capable of transforming individual body parts when threatening to maul Warden Wrath unless he tells her what Belos is planning and what's going on with Raine.
  • Playing Possum: In one match, Amity is knocked down by her opponent, but covertly burrows a line of abomination goo underground to grab his leg and whip him out of the ring.
  • Poke the Poodle: Warden Wrath has been demoted because he stole his co-workers' lunches.
  • Psycho Serum: The tainted Blabber Serum causes Warden Wrath to mutate into a massive, feral beast.
  • Punny Name: Luz uses the title "The Spellraiser", while her first opponent is called "The Flexicutioner".
  • Red Baron: Everyone in the Bonesborough Brawl fights under an alias, two of which are an Oracle witch named "Scab the All-Knowing" and a Construction witch named "The Flexicutioner". Amity uses an Appropriated Appellation of her mother's nickname for her, "The Mighty Mittens", and when Luz enters at the last minute she comes up with the name of "The Spellraiser".
  • The Resenter: Discussed. When Luz confesses to Amity that the reason she's been acting irrational today is because it's the anniversary of her dad passing away, she suggests it might be partly because she was jealous that, even thought Amity has a bit of a strained relationship with her dad, at least she has a dad.
  • The Reveal:
    • Luz is charging her phone while in the Demon Realm by using electric fireflies.
    • Luz's father passed away some time ago, and she and her mother made a tradition of planting flowers on his grave every year on the anniversary of his death. Being stuck on the Boiling Isles on this year's anniversary is what causes the vast majority of Luz's emotional conflict throughout this episode, since she can't complete the ritual.
    • Edric and Emira use concealment charms to make themselves look better without actually putting in the effort. Without them, Edric has glasses and a hairy upper lip and Emira has acne and messy, unbraided hair. Edric also doesn't bother changing clothes, while Emira is at least dressed the same.
    • More teenage witches are interested in more than one type of magic, as shown with Emira using healing magic and Edric being good at beast-keeping magic. Amity also uses a spell to disguise her voice as her father's at one point, implied to be illusion magic, and she says she doesn't want to join any coven anymore.
    • Warden Wrath tells Eda that the Day of Unity, though promising to eliminate only wild magic, is suspected by some to be bad for all magic-kind, regardless of affiliation.
    • Amity never wanted to join the Emperor's Coven; that was all Odalia. In fact, Amity doesn't want to join any coven; she would much rather be a wild witch alongside Luz. Also, Odalia has apparently been trying to re-dye Amity's hair green. It's possible that Amity's desire to join them at the witches' covention is really her trying to convince herself that it was her dream in an attempt to make herself feel less miserable.
    • Eda now has far more control over her harpy form than the last few times it was shown, as she is now able to transform back and forth in an instant and even change individual body parts at will.
    • A minor one, but Wrath reveals that he's no longer a warden after getting demoted for stealing his coworker's lunches.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Subverted after having two straight episodes of this. Edric spends the episode helping Eda and King make a Truth Serum potion to force-feed to Warden Wrath, but he ends up messing it up by adding an extra ingredient and turns it into a mutagenic brew instead. Eda just threatens Wrath to get him to talk after that, making the entire process pointless. However, it's subverted because Eda points out that a potion that turns you into a powerful monster would fetch a good price if she sold it.
  • Shout-Out: The theme that plays during the first match bares motifs of the Mortal Kombat: The Movie theme.
  • Smile of Approval: When Amity stands up to him and fights alongside him to help subdue the mutated Wrath, Alador glances at his daughter and smiles in approval.
  • Snipe Hunt: Amity sends away her Abomaton chaperone by telling it to go look for a "rare and difficult to find emerald dagger" at the night market. Unfortunately, it actually ends up finding one, and rather quickly at that.
  • So Proud of You:
    • Edric and Emira are pleased that Amity is going behind their father's back to compete in the Brawl. Edric notes that she's "becoming more of a delinquent every day".
    • After Amity stands up to him and helps him subdue Warden Wrath, Alador goes from being angry at her for disobeying him to impressed, attempting to patch things up between them by remarking that — unlike Odalia, who has been continually trying to force Amity to dye her hair green again — he likes her purple hair, noting it's the color of Abomination magic.
    • After Edric berates himself for messing up yet again after changing Eda's Truth Serum, she points out that he gave her a new potion to sell and has shown aptitude in three different kinds of magic, stating that he's well on his way to becoming a Wild Witch.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: When Luz fails to find any flowers, Amity simply draws a plant glyph (albeit poorly) to make some flowers. Though it fails because Amity has no experience with glyph magic, Luz realizes she should have thought of that to begin with.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Without his concealment stone, Edric is shown to resemble Alador, right down to the Messy Hair and Facial Scruff.
  • Stunned Silence: When Luz reveals that it's the anniversary of her father's death, Amity has a look of horror on her face over the fact that she's trying to brush it off as not being a big deal.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After Ed messes with Eda's Truth Serum and admonishes himself afterwards, she praises him for giving her a new recipe she can sell, showing aptitude in three different kinds of magics, and gives him a "Bad Girl Coven" t-shirt, giving a much-needed boost to his self-esteem.
  • Troll: It seems that King keeps telling people that Eda once dated Warden Wrath. She is pretty annoyed about this.
  • Truth Serums: Eda, King, and Edric spend the episode trying to concoct a "Blabber Serum" to get Warden Wrath to tell them what he knows about the Day of Unity and what happened to Raine. Unfortunately, Edric's attempt to speed up the brewing time by adding fire bee honey ends up changing the potion into a mutagenic concoction that turns Warden Wrath into a huge, feral beast instead.
  • Try Not to Die: As Luz per usual has a tendency to put her life in danger, Amity tells her this when Luz decides to tag-team with her:
Amity: Just don't get hurt, okay?
  • Twirl of Love: After Amity uses her siblings' concealment stones for a disguise to compete in the Bonesborough Brawl, Luz spins her around a few times while Squeeing at how pretty she looks.
  • Unkempt Beauty: Even without the concealment charms Ed and Em are still good-looking, just less well-kept and more 'awkward teen'-looking.
  • Useless Bystander Parent: Amity calls Alador out on this near the end of the episode. While her mother actively tried to control her life by dying her hair green and planning her life for her, she calls her dad out for just going along with whatever her mom wanted, without ever talking to Amity or asking what she wanted.
  • Voice Changeling: Amity uses magic to imitate her father's voice so she can order the Abomaton chaperone on a Snipe Hunt.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Warden Wrath clearly vomits after the flawed Blabber Serum's effects are reversed, but it's into the snow, and the camera is framed so that we can't actually see it.
  • Wham Episode: We learn that Luz's father is dead, and that there's dissension in the ranks of the Emperor's Coven regarding the Day of Unity.
  • Wham Line: Luz finally admits to Amity why she's been so out of sorts lately.
Luz: Today's the anniversary of my dad passing away.
  • Wham Shot: The reveal that the event reminder on Luz's phone for her and her mom is a visit to the Gravesfield Graveyard.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: In addition to being frustrated with her father, Amity isn't happy that Luz lied to her about setting off the Abomaton's alarm. Amity swipes one of Luz's invisibility spells and storms off, leaving her father and girlfriend reaching after her with dismayed expressions.
  • The Worf Effect:
    • When Alador shows up, he defeats Wrath effortlessly. This gets turned back on him when the altered potion mutates Wrath and his Abomaton can barely hold it back before Amity joins the fight.
    • The mutated Warden Wrath effortlessly overpowers Harpy Eda and sends her flying into the depths of the forest. She's unharmed, but settles for providing support to Luz rather than continuing to fight him directly.
  • Writers Cannot Do Math: At the end of the episode, a calendar in Camila's kitchen indicates that it's August, but that doesn't make sense when the previous episodes are taken into account. The very first episode established that Reality Check Camp would last three months, and "Keeping Up A-fear-ances" revealed that camp was over. Not only that, but "Follies at the Coven Day Parade" established that a month had gone by since Raine was captured, meaning that at least four months should have gone by in-universe and put things in September or October.

Amity: Do you think they'll reach the Human Realm?
Luz: Probably doesn't work that way, but it's a nice thought, right?
