My Better Half

Airdates: November 27, 2014 note , January 24, 2015 note

When symmetrical objects become vandalized and half of Otto's body disappears, Olive must figure out why.

Tropes:

  • Anything but That!: Olive speaks this trope verbatim when refusing to see Baby Genius. Otto's pleading cry is what makes her give in.
  • Body Horror: Otto gets half of his body stolen by Symmetric Al, a villain who steals half of anything that's symmetrical.
  • Brain Bleach: Ms. O witnesses Otto eating soup with only half of his body. It's not seen onscreen, but it was apparently a more-than-unpleasant experience for the Director.
    Ms. O: What's happening?
Olive: Baby Genius gave me an address, but...it looks weird.
Ms. O: You wanna talk weird? I just watched Otto try to drink soup. I can't unsee that!
  • Brainy Baby: Zig-zagged. Baby Genius speaks only in babbles and gurgles and acts like his age, yet manages to produce a legitimate address (or at least half of one, anyway) for Olive to decipher.
  • By "No", I Mean "Yes": When Otto asks Oscar if he can turn his body back to normal, Oscar distractedly says that he can, to which Otto responds with a relieved expression...until he backtracks and states that he can't, causing Otto to give a plaintive wail.
  • Chekhov's Gag: Once Olive obtains an address from Baby Genius, Ms. O calls her and informs her that she watched Otto try to drink soup, and that "I can't unsee that!" At the end of the episode, when Otto has his body restored, he begins to eat the soup, and we get to see exactly how he ate it...in all its invoked Squicky glory.
  • Creepy Good: Both Rivka and Baby Genius qualify as this.
  • The Dreaded: Parodied. Despite their threatening appearances, both Baby Genius and Rivka are good people who are willing to help agents should they offer them something in exchange. Nonetheless, agents are still terrified of them.
  • Food End: The episode ends with Otto eating his soup in a invoked Squicky manner while Olive and Ms. O look on.
  • Forgot to Mind Their Head: Parodied and downplayed in the case of Al #1, who is shown to be too tall for the kid-sized interrogation room, but doesn't actively bang his head on the ceiling.
  • Funny Background Event: While Ms. O is explaining how Symmetric Al is a threat to Olive and Otto, a small group of background agents can be seen performing a conga line right outside the doorway.
  • Gag Haircut: Ms. O remarks that she used to have a similar hairstyle as Al #2. Despite it looking bad, however, she had no issues with it.
  • Hair Flip: Al #2 does one that manages to slap Al #1 in the face.
  • Iconic Item: Baby Genius's rattle serves as this, albeit it's Ms. O who normally has it and not Baby Genius himself. Agents who see the rattle know that they must see Baby Genius, and many who do see it become scared and are reluctant to go see him.
  • Jabba Table Manners: The first thing Otto does after having his body fully restored is eat the rest of the soup he was eating before. Both Olive and Ms. O are rightfully invoked Squicked out.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Al #2 has long wavy hair on one side of his head.
  • Malevolent Mutilation: Symmetric Al intentionally steals half of Otto's body due to it being symmetrical on both sides.
  • Mess on a Plate: Otto's "soup" moreso resembles corn puree than actual soup. He still finds it to be delicious anyway.
  • Not-So-Abandoned Building: Rivka and Baby Genius reside in what is presumed to be a dark alleyway. However, a later episode reveals that it's the Odd Squad Warehouse.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: Upon returning from their latest case, Olive and Otto come across Ms. O, who greets them in a sweet tone of voice. Both agents become confused but skeptical, exchanging dubious looks, before Ms. O reverts back to her Mean Boss ways.
  • Overly Long Scream: Otto gives a big one once he finds out half of his body has been taken. He's only stopped when Ms. O yells at him to calm down.
  • Planet of Steves: Olive comes across three men in a diner who all happen to be named Al, and lampshades it.
Olive: Which one of you is Al?!
[all three men raise their hand]
    Olive: You're all named Al?
  • Resigned to the Call: With her partner being the latest victim of Symmetric Al's villainy, Olive is forced to confront Baby Genius and Rivka in order to get info needed to catch Al, despite her initially protesting.
  • Shout-Out: The title is a name shared by both an album by the band TnT, and a Chinese comedy series.
  • Sinister Geometry: Symmetric Al carries a purple cube that is able to restore symmetrical objects. It's implied that said cube also takes said objects away as well.
  • Unable to Cry: Otto sheds no visible tears in response to half of his body being stolen; instead, he gives out sorrowful wails.

All right, who ordered the two Rambunctious Italians?
The Confalones

Airdates: November 27, 2014 note , January 24, 2015 note

Olive and Otto are called in to help when food is being rounded by a table inside an Italian restaurant.

Tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: Tony Rosato, the actor of Sabatino Confalone, voiced Luigi in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3. This episode has an accordion player named Luigi who is implied to be directly related to Sabatino.
  • Actually a Good Idea: As the Confalones set the six antipasto dishes down, four more antipasto dishes appear, making ten. Instead of reacting with surprise like Olive, however, they take this as an opportunity to make free food and earn more money, much to Olive's chagrin.
    Olive: [exasperated] Ay-yai-yai...
  • Added Alliterative Appeal: Otto's "Meatball Mountain".
  • All There in the Script: The female chef's name is revealed to be "Sylvia" in the credits.
  • Big Eater: Yes, it's well-established that Otto is this. However, he takes it up to eleven here with a level of pasta-eating that would put Garfield to shame.
  • Comically Missing the Point: The Confalones all do this when Olive explains how to make Gino come back.
Sabatino: So what you're saying is...
    [small pause]
All Confalones: ...it's a family reunion!
[cheering as Olive does a Facepalm and Otto celebrates with them]
  • Continuity Nod: The Mathroom is brought up as a Toilet Humour pun again.
  • Dancing Is Serious Business: The Confalones have a secret family dance that they teach Otto as thanks for teaching them about rounding.
  • Dinner and a Show: Averted. The Confalone family is on very good terms with each other, and no negativity is shown.
  • Dramatic Drop: Otto's reaction to Tony not knowing about rounding numbers is to let the pan of pasta he was eating slip out of his hands and clatter to the floor, complete with Jaw Drop. Hilariously, the fork he's holding isn't dropped as well.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: This episode has Otto offhandedly mention the police in regards to who Sabatino should call to report a burglary. This is despite the fact that 1) there are no police officers in the town, as Odd Squad (the organization) serves that role, and 2) Adults Are Useless, so even if the police did exist, they wouldn't be effective anyway, even to stop the most minor of crimes. Furthermore, police officers, and police in general, are never directly brought up or hinted at again.
  • Eating Solves Everything: The Meatball Mountain Otto sets up is what eventually helps to solve the issue, with Olive and Otto realizing that, just like what the mountain was used to demonstrate, the table is also rounding up and down.
  • Facepalm: Olive pinches the bridge of her nose in response to Sabatino announcing that they need a family reunion. This would later become a Character Tic of hers.
  • Gratuitous Italian: At the end of the episode, Otto performs a chef's kiss and cries out "Bellissimo!", which roughly translates to "very beautiful" in English.
  • Hidden Depths: While it's never actually shown onscreen, it's revealed that Otto is actually a Supreme Chef who makes good meatballs, befitting his Big Eater tendencies.
  • Is This a Joke?: When Sabatino explains that his restaurant has been robbed by a table (complete with Musical Sting), this is Olive and Otto's reaction before it winds up being a Bait-and-Switch:
    Olive and Otto: [skeptical] Table.
    Sabatino: Yeah, a table.
[beat as Ms. O performs an Eye Take]
Olive: Totally a job for us.
Otto: Definitely a job for us.
  • "Knock Knock" Joke: The Cold Open's client is stuck in one. Olive and Otto go to check on him, and unfortunately get stuck in the cycle.
Olive: I think we may be here a while.
  • Matter of Life and Death: Olive explains to the Confalones that touching the table simultaneously will cause Gino to reappear. Otto then chimes in with this:
Otto: Or if we're wrong, you could all disappear.
    [the Confalones get worried looks]
    Otto: Just saying! Just saying.
  • Mountain of Food: Otto's "Meatball Mountain" display is comprised of 20 pounds of spaghetti lumped into a mountain shape, complete with sauce on top resembling snow. He lampshades the amount in an Aside Comment.
  • Musicalis Interruptus: Zig-zagged. As she enters the kitchen, Olive asks Otto what he's doing. The music stops briefly before Otto replies with "The Confalone Dance!" and continues dancing. Olive then yells that "we have a problem!" which causes the music to stop again.
  • Never Gets Fat: Despite all the food Otto eats, he never gains a single pound.
  • Never Say "Die": Gino is consistently referred to as having "disappeared" or being "gone".
  • Obsessed with Food: As soon as Olive suggests that it's the Confalones' food itself that's causing the issue, Otto immediately volunteers to head right for the kitchen to investigate.
  • Pest Episode: Heavily downplayed; while Tony more or less admits that the restaurant has mice in the kitchen, they aren't seen onscreen and are never mentioned again, with Otto merely telling them that they should get the issue checked out.
  • Rambunctious Italian: Every member of the Confalone family is this. Sabatino in particular provides the page image for the trope.
  • Shaped Like Itself:
Tony: Uncle Gino's gone?! I loved him like an uncle!
  • Sibling Rivalry: Both Sabatino and Gino Confalone get into yelling matches with each other to the point that it's a Running Gag, with Olive and Otto bearing witness to each and every one of them.
  • Shout-Out: While venting his frustration about the table, Gino quotes a variant of "The Lord giveth and The Lord taketh away" line from the King James version of The Bible.
  • Sniff Sniff Nom: Exploited by Otto, who takes a dinner roll and eats it despite Gino asking him what if it's the food itself that's causing things to disappear.
Otto: I never said this job wasn't dangerous.
  • Songs of Solace: Sabatino asks Luigi to play him a sad song on his accordion. He complies, and as the song plays, the other Confalones begin grieving over the loss of their relative.
  • Sorry to Interrupt: Olive rushes into the kitchen after Gino disappears, flinging the curtains open only to come face-to-face with Otto, Tony and Sylvia continuing to do their Confalone Dance. She doesn't pay the dance much mind, though, and immediately tells Otto that there's an issue.
  • Stock Sound Effects: The sound of Olive whistling to gather the nine Confalones together is one of these, made obvious by her bobbing movements not matching the timing of the sound effect.
  • Take a Third Option: Sabatino and Gino can't decide whether to use Greek salad or Caesar salad to test the table's rounding, and begin to argue before Olive interrupts and suggests they use antipasto instead, to the agreement of the brothers. And then they begin to argue over who should get the antipasto dishes...
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Sandwich: The mound of spaghetti used for Otto's Meatball Mountain is never even touched after Otto uses it to demonstrate rounding.
  • Toilet Humour: One of the rare few instances of it in the series.
Sylvia: Odd Squad, can you get [Gino] back?
Olive: There's only one way. We have to go to the Mathroom.
Sabatino: [anguished] At a time like this?
Otto: Especially at a time like this.
