Recap / Fairy May Cry, 35 "Apocalyptic Dragon Chain Cannon"

Go To

In an attempt to stop King Faust's plan, Erza Scarlet poses as Knightwalker with Dante and everybody else as her "prisoners", hoping they can get close enough to destroy the Dragon Chain Cannon. Can they succeed, or will Fairy Tail fall?

  • Always Someone Better: Erza manages to nonlethally defeat Knightwalker, albeit the latter was worn down from her fight with Dante.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: The Edolas soldiers comments on Gray's magic.
    Soldier 1: That's crazy.
Soldier 2: Is that Earthland magic?
Soldier 3: Does he have to be shirtless?
  • Bare-Handed Blade Block: Gajeel manages to pull this off on Panther-Lily's Busterman, and proceeds to shatter it.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Delivered by Trish to a group of arrogant exceeds, punctuated by a blast of lightning.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Trish viciously lays into the exceeds when they start throwing rocks at Wendy and Carla.
  • Blood Knight: Gajeel, Lady, and Panther-Lily all greatly enjoy fighting one another, to the point Happy notes the former two have forgotten their original goal.
  • Boomerang Bigot: Panther-Lily has zero issues with the plan to destroy Extalia despite being an exceed himself, angrily calling it a kingdom of lies.
  • Call-Back:
    • Gajeel relates to Panther-Lily being an outcast from his time as a newcomer to Fairy Tail.
    • Lucy compares the effects on the palace from the cannon preparing to fire to the Gildarts Shift.
  • Clothing Damage: Panther-Lily loses some of his armour during his fight with Lady and Gajeel.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: The Anima is typically blue, but becomes dark red when Nelo Angelo/the Onyx Reaper forces it to open a portal to the Underworld.
  • Count To Three: Trish does this in anticipation of the exceeds blowing off their warnings.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Played for Horror when the newly empowered Onyx Reaper brutally slaughters the Edolas soldiers sent to guard the Anima controls.
  • Determinator:
    • Despite being held at sword and gun point, Faust refuses to let that get in the way of his quest for eternal magic power, outright telling his guards that they shouldn't stop even if his life is in danger.
    • Despite failing to stop the cannon, Fairy Tail barely needs a moment to move on to trying to stop the lacrima from hitting Extalia.
  • Didn't See That Coming:
    • The exceeds are shocked when Trish fires a blast of lightning, being convinced humans have no powers.
    • Lady and Happy give a Big "WHAT?!" when Gajeel declares he will make Panther-Lily his cat.
    • Erza is shocked to see Lisanna alive and well.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Even resident Action Girl slash experienced Devil Hunter Lady finds Gajeel's expression to be disturbing.
  • Evil Versus Evil: Nelo Angelo against the Edolas royal forces. The poor guards didn't stand a chance.
  • Eviler than Thou: Nelo Angelo to Faust, planning to unleash an Apocalypse How on Edolas in contrast to the mad kings goal to amass power.
  • Fantastic Racism: The exceeds have this in spades towards humans, outright saying their presence is forbidden in Extalia and saying Trish must be a monster to look human and have powers.
  • Flipping the Bird: Dante gives one to Erza Knightwalker before going to stop the lacrima.
  • Foreshadowing: Panther-Lily refers to Extalia as a "kingdom of lies", alluding to their God Guise.
  • Gilligan Cut: When Modeus asks Dante and Natsu where Lucy and Lisanna are, the scene cuts to Coco trying to pull them out from under octopus Byro.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Dante and Erza have no qualms holding Faust hostage in order to rescue their friends, and furiously shoot down the Edolas soldiers attempts act like they have the moral high ground.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: Gajeel, Lady, and Panther-Lily's fight devolves into this, all three combatants grinning madly.
  • Hope Spot: Fairy Tail manages to take King Faust hostage, forcing the Edolas soldiers to aim the cannon to blast the lacrima and free their friends... right before Erza Knightwalker arrives, freeing Faust and letting the cannon strike its original target.
  • Idiot Hero: Natsu initially thinks Lucy and Lisanna were turned into Legions, only for an irritated Dante to snipe they're just riding them.
  • Important Haircut: Erza Knightwalker cuts her hair to shoulder length to distinguish herself from her Earthland counterpart.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: Edolas Natsu, Gray, and Mary discuss how best to approach Lucy Ashley and Edolas Eva while the latter two are standing a few feet away. The aunt and niece pair lampshade it.
  • Internal Reveal: A disguised Erza informs Faust of Nelo Angelo's status as a Dragon with an Agenda, as well as being a demon sent to pave the way for his master to take over Edolas.
  • Loophole Abuse: She doesn't use it, but Trish is amused by the exceeds declaration that humans and Fallen are forbidden to set foot on Extalia since it makes no mention of a demon like her.
  • Mama Bear: Edolas Eva expresses worry for Dante despite not knowing she is her counterparts son.
  • Moral Myopia: The Edolas soldiers condemn Fairy Tail as cowards for taking Faust hostage. The guild fires back that the kingdom kidnapped their friends and converted them into a power source, so they have no moral high ground to stand on.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Erza was able to defeat her Evil Counterpart and steal her clothes without needing to kill her.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Trish joins Wendy and Carla in warning Extalia of the incoming lacrima, and stops the exceeds when they start to throw rocks.
    • Lisanna joins Lucy in being stuck under Byro, and in her Big Damn Heroes moment after the cannon fires.
    • Edolas Eva and Mary join Edolas Gray, Natsu, and Lucy in waiting for Edolas Gajeel to arrive.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Trish gives a scathing one to the exceeds for their arrogance.
Trish: Listen up you overgrown Furballs! We came here to try and help you, I heard how high-strung all of you are, but after seeing you right now, I don't blame the Edolas Royal Army for what they're trying to do. You all may look different but I've seen your kind of creatures all the time. Monsters who think they're above everyone else. You think you have the right to walk all over people, to treat them like bugs with no regard to the amount of suffering and pain you all cause! So let me make myself perfectly clear. The threat you all face is real; but the choice is yours. You can either run and live, or stay and die. But if any of you want to hurt Wendy or Carla, I promiseā€¦ (pulls out devil sword Sparda) I'll take you all down myself, just like I've done the demons in my world!
  • Spotting the Thread: Dante immediately sees through Erza Scarlets Knightwalker disguise, noting she lacks a cut the latter obtained during their fight.
  • Super-Toughness: Panther-Lily is still in fighting shape after taking a direct Iron Dragon Roar from Gajeel, and several rockets from Lady. The latter lampshades it.
  • Undying Loyalty: The Edolas soldiers to Faust, even being willing to defy his orders if it means saving his life.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: As per canon, the exceeds response to Wendy, Carla and Trish's warning is to mock and throw rocks at them.
  • Villainous Valor:
    • Even while being held at sword and gun point, Faust orders his soldiers not to give in to the demands of Fairy Tail, determined to provide his kingdom with limitless magical power, even if it costs him his life.
    • The soldiers sent to guard the Anima controls refuse to step out of Nelo Angelo/the Onyx Reaper's way, despite knowing just how outclassed they are.
  • Worthy Opponent: Lady and Gajeel consider Panther-Lily one based on how many of their attacks he takes and just keeps going.
  • You Remind Me of X:
    • Lady compares Panther-Lily's disdain for his own species to Sparda's rebellion against demonkind.
    • Gajeel relates the exceed having been kicked out of Extalia to his own feelings as an outcast when he first joined Fairy Tail.
