Examples of the Last-Name Basis in Fan Works.

Crossovers
  • Basil's American Tail goes with the Fanon that his first name is actually Sherringford (a Mythology Gag for Sherlock Holmes). He prefers being addressed by "Basil" instead.
  • Because I'm Not Popular I'll Try To Out With A hero has Venom only refer to Peter by his last name.
  • In Sam's dialogue and even narration in Cross Cases, he defaults to referring to everyone new that he meets over the course of the story by surname and usually title, including Harry. Murphy even becomes 'Ms. Murphy', and he only ever calls Harry 'Dresden', despite striking up a pretty good friendship with the guy.
  • Infinity Train: Blossomverse: If a story has Paul London in it, he usually goes by his last name. Also a One-Steve Limit since there's another Paul that's traversing the Train. Lampshaded in Infinity Train: Voyage of Wisteria when Amelia asks for Paul and London looks up and she has to clarify with "The one with purple hair."
  • In Neither a Bird nor a Plane, it's Deku!, only a handful of characters have addressed Izuku by his given name: his parents, Firestorm, and Alexis Luthor. The rest address him as "Midoriya" except for Bakugou, who calls him "Deku". This is particularly noticeable when Izuku is conversing with his parents, as he's still referred to in the narration as "Midoriya" even as his parents are referred to by their given names.
  • No stars in sight: Despite living on an abandoned island for nearly forty years with Formora as the only person he's had any form of social contact with, Enduriel continues to address Formora by her family name, Láerdhon. This is meant to demonstrate the Teeth-Clenched Teamwork between the two.
  • Superwomen of Eva 2: Lone Heir of Krypton: Section Two Chief Chiron is only known by his last name. Nobody refers to him by his name.
  • The Supermen: Wesker is generally called by his surname, and seems to prefer this as he is annoyed by Superman constantly calling him "Albert".
  • In White Devil of the Moon, Princess Serenity was reborn as Nanoha instead of Usagi. Without Usagi's influence, the Sailor Senshi haven't grown into True Companions, and address each other by their surnames rather than given names. Hayate also refers to Mars as "Hino-san".

Ace Attorney

Calvin and Hobbes

Danganronpa

  • Despair's Last Resort: Chiyo Ueda, Arata Miyazaki, and Kazumi Katsuya all do this. Chiyo does it out of politeness (and uses "Ms." or "Mr." on most people), while the other two out of rudeness. Chiyo makes an exception for her Childhood Friend Kumiko. Shortly before Shizuka's execution, Kazumi starts referring to her by first name. Arata calls Takara by her first name after she figures out his crime, but it doesn't last long since he gets executed.
  • In New Hope University: Major In Murder, Earl Morale calls all his classmates by their last names. This ends up being an important clue in finding out what he means when he writes "V's place" in his note - V stands for "Voss", as in Emily Voss, the Ultimate Astronomer (no one else has a name that starts with V).
  • In Where Talent Goes to Die, most of the cast addresses each other this way, since they're Japanese high schoolers who have only just met each othernote . Mitamura in particular insists on being called "Mitamura-san," since she addresses all other classmates by their last names and "-san."
  • Where Talent Goes on Vacation:
    • Yukari Nagato, the class's teacher, uses last names and "-san" on everyone in the class out of politeness. Not even her daughter is an exception, and she insists that Chiyuri call her "Nagato-sensei" out of respect for her as a teacher, and keeping their professional and private lives separate.
    • In a side story showing how the penultimate student council at Talent High School was elected, two of the outgoing student council members, Yukiko Mochizuki and Miko Yagami, call each other "Yagami-san" and "Mochizuki-san" despite having been friends since childhood and close enough to joke around with one another. They note that they feel too awkward with using First-Name Basis on each other.

Disney Animated Canon

  • Fox in the Bunnyhouse: Judy constantly refers to Mr. Big and Mr. Manchas by their surnames, despite how the former is the grandfather of her goddaughter while the latter has served as her son's personal chauffer for seven years. However, when Mr. Manchas gets shot with a night howler pellet, she calls him Renato.

Dragon Age

  • As in canon, most characters in Skyhold Academy Yearbook address Marian Hawke by her surname only. Her sister Bethany, her close friend Cassandra, and her colleague Cullen are the only ones ever seen to call her by her first name.

Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends

  • Frankie Rules: Herriman changes from calling Frankie "Miss Francis" to "Madame Foster" after she becomes the new owner of Foster's.

FusionFall

  • Invisible Sun: Professor Utonium's lack of a known given name is lampshaded when Dexter is asked Professor Utonium's name and can only think of "Professor".

Harry Potter

  • After her breakup with Severus in The Peace Not Promised, Lily goes back to using his last name (whereas she would previously use an Affectionate Nickname) in order to send a clear message that they're no longer friends.

Hotline Miami

  • In the custom campaign series Cold War, the protagonist John Whitefield hates his first name and ask to be called Whitefield.

The Hunger Games

  • Salvaged: Johanna calls the other District 7 victors besides Blight (Kayta Hiro, Reinhold Meyer, and Khamphan "Champion" Larch) by their last names.

Mass Effect

  • At least one fic justifies Commander Shepard only being called by their rank or last name by explaining that no one (Shepard included) actually knows their first name.

Miraculous Ladybug

  • Back To Us: During his first few meetings with Marinette, Adrien repeatedly addresses her as "Miss Dupain-Cheng", much to her mounting frustration. He finally drops it after she confronts him on the matter:
Marinette: If you're trying to be professional, fine, but leave it in the office. Outside of these industry walls, it's Marinette, damn it.
  • LadyBugOut revolves around Ladybug deciding to start her own blog after Alya deliberately misrepresents what happened with Oblivio in order to push the LadyNoir ship. Alya treats this as though Ladybug betrayed her by exposing her lies. In Retired and Replaced, she confronts Ladybug after learning she's chosen a new Fox hero; when the conversation ends, Ladybug simply states "Good-bye, Miss Cesaire," driving home how distant they've grown.
  • The Wolves in the Woods: Chloé exclusively refers to Marinette as "Dupain-Cheng", even while complaining about how she didn't deserve how Alya and the rest of the class treated her.

My Hero Academia

  • In Anyone, Shouto is Izuku's closest friend, and acts as his Lancer and second-in-command in the titular organization. Yet the two of them still address each other by their last names.
  • Burning Embers: Since Izuku doesn't have a Quirk here, Tsuyu firmly believes that he's outright incapable of becoming a Pro Hero and should just give up. Since she told him this point blank to his face, Izuku in turn is much colder towards her, addressing her exclusively by her surname Asui despite her repeatedly stating that she'd prefer everyone calling her by her given name.
  • Haigha: After deciding he's had enough of Katsuki's self-absorbed, egotistical attitude, Izuku declares that he no longer sees him as a friend, dropping the "Kacchan" nickname and referring to him purely as Bakugou.
  • Nutricula: After learning the full extent of how Katsuki bullied Izuku, including how he goaded him to kill himself, Eijirou drops his usual friendly nicknames and refers to him as Bakugou. Katsuki grimly recognizes this as a sign of how much respect his Only Friend lost for him.
  • Rise of the Demonic Hero: After Izuku comes Back from the Dead, he coldly addresses his former friend turned long-time abuser by his surname. When Katsuki demands to know why, Izuku furiously points out that he's the reason why he died in the first place:
Katsuki: Deku? Is it really you?
Izuku: Yes, Bakugou, it is me.
Katsuki: (recoiling) HUH? What's with this 'Bakugou' shit! Where's the 'Kaachan'!
Izuku: 'Where's the Kaachan?' I'll tell you where the Kaachan is! He's dead! You stopped being Kaachan when you killed me!
  • In the Sleeper Hit AU, Katsuki repeatedly complains about Ejirou addressing him by the friendly nickname 'Bakubro'. When Katsuki declares that he wishes Izuku had taken his advice back when he told him to "take a swan dive off the roof", Ejirou is so disgusted that he drops the nickname and coldly calls him out as "Bakugou".

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

  • Chrysalis Visits The Hague: The lawyer Alexander Estermann keeps this going, much to the point that the narration sticks to just referring to him as Estermann, reflecting his somewhat stuck-up professionalistic nature.
  • RainbowDoubleDash's Lunaverse: In "Nightmares Yet to Come", Midnight tends to refer to ponies by their second name exclusively (though apparently if they have a title, she'll use that as well). Her introduction mentions she does this to Trixie, who hates being called by her last name of Lulamoon due to childhood taunting, despite many attempts on Trixie's part to get her to do otherwise. So far, what she does with ponies who have only one name (like Applejack, or Raindrops) is unclear.

Naruto

Neon Genesis Evangelion

  • Rei tells Kaworu to call her by her last name in chapter 11 of Advice and Trust since she lost all her memories of him after dying in the battle against the 16th angel (her latest memory backup having been just before meeting him).

The Octonauts

  • In the Junior Officers chapter "Heal", it's revealed that Shellington chooses to go by his surname instead of his first name (Oliver) because he believes he won't be taken seriously with his first name.

One Piece

  • This Bites!: Partially due to having a different naming convention, all of the Straw Hats call Cross by his last name instead of Jeremiah. This is also on account of Cross much preferring to be referred to as his last name instead of Jeremiah, or any variation thereof.

Pokémon

  • In the Delia/Giovanni oneshot Frayed Ends, Delia notes that she's always been uncomfortable using Giovanni's first name. She instead prefers his last name, Giovanni.
  • In The Story of Silver Ketchum, Daenae Malcom goes by her surname "Malcom".

Portal

  • Blue Sky (Waffles) justifies this with Wheatley. His Brain Uploading caused him to forget most of his previous life, including his full name. Caroline later on reveals that his full name is Stephen Wheatley.

Professional Wrestling

Real-Person Fic

RWBY

Star Wars

  • Tarkin's Fist: Most characters refer to Justin Mallory exclusively as Mallory or Mal. The use of his first name, Justin, by his brother Cale is explicitly noted by Mallory himself to sound odd, since everyone refers to him by his last name.

Storm Hawks

Touhou Project

  • In the Gensokyo 20XX series, we have this to somewhat the case with Mokou who is nicknamed "Huzi", being that her last name, Fujiwara, is alternatively pronounced and spelled Huziwara, leading for her nickname to be Huzi and she is usually referred to as such. Apparently, an age-regressed Reimu thinks her first name is her last name.

Yu-Gi-Oh!

  • Being Dead Ain't Easy: Almost everyone Seto Kaiba knows refers to him exclusively by his last name. Kaiba does the same to everyone he addresses.
