TBS shorts

  • One of the funniest episodes from the original shorts has Retsuko going into rage mode when she has trouble removing the price tag from a flower vase and sings with Gratuitous English "You wanna go? You wanna go!" as she battles with the tag. She loses the battle.
  • Anai from the TBS series tries defending Restuko from Ton when he suggests that Retsuko will marry rich and quit her job. Anai then suggests that that's not true and rages out like Retsuko and says that she doesn't socialize and implies that she's married to the job and not interested in vows (it's actually that she's too shy to ask anyone out, but she does socialize quite often). Retsuko is left embarrassed and Ton is left incredibly flustered.
  • Another episode has Retsuko telling Ton that he should answer the phone sometimes instead of always leaving her to do it. Anai turns out to be spectacularly awful at answering the phone.
Anai: IT WAS AN HONOR CONVERSING WITH THEE.

Netflix Series Season 1

General
  • Pretty much every time Fenneko starts laughing. Her laughter is so deadpan that it just comes off as her saying "ha" repeatedly.
  • Seeing Fenneko drunk can be amusing to watch, such as her drunk laugh. She was once so drunk that she had a strange short conversation with Haida on her phone outside after the singles party was over and trying her hardest to stand up.

A Day in the Life of Retsuko

  • Retsuko accidentally wears her Crocs to work. When she bumps into Tsunoda, her first instinct is to do a strange dance to try and distract her from looking at the shoes.
  • Retsuko and Fenneko are in awe of Gori and Washimi as they pass by. As soon as they turn a corner, though, Gori stops to complain that their "baddest bitch in the room" walk is killing her back.
  • Fenneko's obsessive study of Tsunoda's Instagram, to the point that she not only notices a very carefully-planned pattern in the order of her posts, but can recite it as a limerick! Better yet, the limerick-like speach pattern carries over into all of the dubs.
  • A small one, but near the end, Kabae makes her second appearance, annoys Retsuko a little bit, and leaves...by waving her arms like she's riding a motorcycle and giving a full six seconds long "Bye." She walks off the edge of the screen about halfway through.

A Good, Hard-Working Girl

  • The Cold Open has Retsuko trying to shop with an overly-courteous employee breathing down her neck.
Employee: No pressure, take your time!
Employee: (again) No pressure, take your time!
Employee: (AGAIN) There's no pressure, take your time—
Retsuko: LET ME TAKE MY TIME ALREADYYYYY!!!!!
  • Fenneko remarks on how work is getting to Retsuko.
    Fenneko: Retsuko, what's up?
Retsuko: ...hm? What do you mean?
Fenneko: Hmm... not to alarm you, but your face reminds me of a grandma.
(cut to Retsuko with her face all wrinkled)
  • Midway through the episode, Fenneko and Haida are describing things they imagine Retsuko does, as the “responsible” one. The problem is, Puko used the same hypothetical scenarios earlier, and it ends in this:
Fenneko and Haida: Okay, double or nothing, then, I bet you buy socks you don’t even want ‘cause you feel bad walking out of a store without buying anything.
Retsuko: (panicked) You’re really starting to freak me out!
  • When Retsuko was having a drunken conversation with Puko. She suddenly tells her that the electrical outlet back at her home looks like Ton's snout.

Short Timer

  • As Kabae is honing in on Retsuko for a potential rumor, her eyes are lit up and she's doing a weird, wavy arm dance.
  • To keep her plans to leave her job a secret, she tells Kabae that she couldn't go to the bathroom for five days. Later in the restroom, she runs into Fenneko:
Fenneko: I heard you can poop again. Way to go.
Retsuko: [thinking] Why is she telling people?!
  • Somehow, as it spreads through the office, the rumor gets twisted enough so that Haida ends up thinking that Retsuko is pregnant. His reaction is nothing short of hilarious.
  • This scene also introduces Fenneko's memetic flat laugh.
    Fenneko: hahahahahahahahaha
    Retsuko: You're not helping!
  • Then her plans fall through, leading to one of the best exchanges in the translation.
Kabae: Why the long face? You pooped!
Retsuko: Some things even a good pooping can't fix.

Walking Down the Aisle

  • Retsuko attends a wedding of an old friend and offers 30,000 yen to the happy couple as a present (a common practice in Japan). She has a hard time letting go of the money, however...
Metal!Retsuko: GET YOUR DIRTY PAWS OFF MY MONEY!!!
  • When Retsuko realizes she could quit her crappy job if she gets married to a gainfully employed man, she lets out a Metal Scream that both Gori and Washimi hear from the hall and which visibly freaks them out:
  • When Retsuko tells Tsunoda that she's thinking of going to yoga classes, Tsunoda is able to peg why immediately.
Tsunoda: Oh wow! Sounds like someone's on the prowl.
[bunch of single men in the break room hear her and look at Retsuko]
Retsuko: Uh... not really. What makes you think I'm doing this to try to land a guy?
Tsunoda: It's just, you've been single for so long.
[bunch of single men in the break room hear her and look at Retsuko]
Retsuko: Yeah... Thank you.. for that.
Tsunoda: Noo way you should worry about working out. You look good with a bit of chub on you. [pinches Retsuko's arm] Your arms are so squishy like baby arms, and babies make people smile. So why would you want to ruin that with muscles, huh?
  • Fenneko tricks Haida into asking Retsuko out for drinks, despite knowing that she was busy that night.
    Fenneko: [Obnoxious, deadpan laugh]
Haida: God, you are such a troll!
  • Retsuko's yoga teacher can only say one word: Protein.
  • At the class, Retsuko notices Washimi and Gori in the same class and tries to act calm, hoping they haven't noticed her. The second after she thinks this, both women pivot towards her almost with a Scary Shiny Glasses effect.
    • A similar situation happens after the class is over. Retsuko is just getting over the awkwardness of seeing the two women there and has just convinced herself they're probably not interested... when Gori starts walking excitedly over towards her when she's not looking.
    • Gori is so excited to meet Retsuko she gets flustered... and has to actually tag in Washimi to finish the introductions properly.

Exposed

  • After Retsuko finds out she has the same yoga class as Gori and Washimi, Gori asks her if she wants to come have dinner with them after. She politely turns them down, but only because she feels like she's not good enough. The next day she passes them in the hall and, feeling bad about it, doesn't look at either of them. After Retsuko is out of sight, Gori, totally stone-faced, abruptly collapses against the wall before crumpling over in tears, saying that Retsuko didn't even look at them and must hate her.
  • After hearing about Fenneko's Sherlock Scan of Retsuko's whereabouts, Haida is freaked out, and says he'd hate to make Fenneko an enemy. Fenneko's responses in Japanese and English are different but equally funny:
    • The Japanese:
Haida: You're scary. I wouldn't want to be your enemy.
Fenneko: It had to be done. Retsuko wasn't going to tell us. [sips wine]
    • And the English:
Haida: Okay, you're freaking me out. I hope I never piss you off.
Fenneko: If you do, just stay away from social media. [sips wine]
    • Another amusing translation: during the Sherlock Scan itself, Fenneko opens up a social media pic with Retsuko in the background. The Japanese is much more straightforward than the English...
Japanese!Fenneko: Doesn't that look like Retsuko in the background to you?
English!Fenneko: And there in the background: Retsuko booty.
  • Tsubone likes to torture her colleagues by asking them to open a jar for her, one that is near impossible to get open. In one episode, she stumbles upon Retsuko and asks her to open that same jar. Thanks to getting more fit from her yoga classes, Retsuko manages to open it without any hassle, leaving Tsubone dumbfounded.
    • Fenneko's "O_O" face she makes after this scene is hilarious, considering the cat smile doesn't leave her face, creating something that looks like "OωO"
  • After Retsuko reveals her love for singing Metal, Washimi and Gori try replicating her scream to no success and being confused at how Retsuko can do it.

Stoking Rebellion

  • In direct contrast to the deferential Retsuko, Washimi destroys her boss's miniature model, and while he proclaims that it was very expensive and he's the CEO and she's just a secretary, she calmly tears into him about how much the model cost (300,000 yen!) and rips the check in half while he cries.
  • Retsuko attempts to manipulate Ton the way Tsunoda does. Needless to say, she is less than successful.
  • Gori striding down the hall by herself before she comes to an abrupt stop (along with the music), realizes she doesn't have anywhere she needs to be at the time, then does an about-face and strides back the way she came. In the English dub, she even comments that the "baddest bitch in the room walk" works better with Washimi.

The Duel

  • After being called out by the CEO for his actions, Ton pretends to be nice so he can figure out who told on him. Needless to say, it freaks everyone out. Especially with his terrifying smile. It gets to the point where all of the employees cram themselves into the lounge to hide from him.
    WE GOT A HIPPO DOWN!!
  • After Haida goes on about how he hates company drinking parties and tells Ookami to put him as not attending, Retsuko says that she's attending. Haida immediately tells Ookami that he changed his mind.
Haida: On second thought, I'm in.
Ookami: What the- You were just telling us how much you hate that stuff.
Haida: (blushing) Who died and made you the party police?! I'm allowed to change my mind you know!
  • Fenneko's reason for going to the company drinking party.
"I'm just going to ruin people's selfies."
  • Haida ends up late to the party, and is irked to see that Ookami is sitting next to Retsuko.
(internally) I bust my ass to get here and he's already taken my seat!?
    • Then he finds out that Kabae and Tsubone saved a seat between them for him.
Kabae and Tsubone: Oh Haidaaaa!! We saved you a seat! Come on, won't you sit next to us??
      Haida: [groans]
  • After Ton sings about how much Retsuko sucks, Fenneko had this to say:
Fenneko: hahahahahahahahaha! Ton just dissed you in front of the entire department. And he's not wrong.
    Retsuko: Not helping!
  • Right after Retsuko wins the karaoke duel with Ton, it's revealed that everyone other than Retsuko has passed out.
Restaurant Employee: You guys.. wanna order anything else?

The Out of Pocket Prince

  • After the office party where Retsuko absolutely demolishes Ton with her Death Metal, nobody remembers due to being too hammered at the time. However, when Fenneko and Haida begin to recall the events, Retsuko knocks them out with a single chop to the neck.
Retsuko: (after knocking out Haida) Luckily, my inebriated co-workers don't seem to clearly remember last night.
  • Gori invites herself over to Retsuko's apartment so she can vent about her relationship troubles. Then she starts rummaging through Retsuko's dresser.
  • After the singles mixer, drunk Retsuko performs Death Metal vomiting.

A Rosy World

  • Retsuko's first thought on seeing Resasuke as a prince.
"Wait.. What the? Why is he.. sparkly?"
  • Washimi has a snarky comment on first seeing what Resasuke looks like.
"I guess that love really is blind."
  • Gori and Washimi on Resasuke:
Washimi: Is it me, or does his head kind of look like some sort of... slightly toasted marshmallow?
Gori: Yes! Thank you! I've been thinking that this entire time!
    • In Japanese, Washimi notes: "This guy reminds me of a soft candy for babies."
  • Manumaru is having difficulty getting Resasuke to realize that Retsuko is interested in him. And then he has to go into why Resasuke needs a girlfriend at all.
  • Resasuke and Retsuko's date song gets pretty hilarious when you realize that Resasuke's line to her is: "You are the girl who barfed, who does accounting."

The Dream Ends

  • Gori and Washimi on dining:
Gori: Oooh, can we go to that place with the quiche?
Washimi: Of course you'd want to go there. Typical.
Gori: Girl, I know you did not just quiche-shame me.
  • Gori's attempts at singing during the season finale are flat-out hilarious.
  • A combination of this and Tear Jerker: Retsuko's trying to deal with Resasuke's indifference to her when the "RAGE" symbol appears on her head and the metal music starts playing. She slaps her forehead where the symbol is to mute it before running off.
  • The part in the finale where Ton explains to the office why they're down three people: Haida's Gray Rain of Depression scene led to him being hospitalized for pneumonia, Tsubone tried to open another jar and broke her wrist (complete with a split-second shot of FATALITY in the flashback), and Kabae's nonstop gossip somehow got her arrested for espionage.
Komiya: DOES SHE EVEN HAVE A NEPHEW?!

Netflix Special: A Very Metal Christmas

  • Retsuko's new Instagram hobby is Serious Business to both Tsunoda and Fenneko...in opposite directions.
Fenneko: Why'd you do it, huh, Retsuko? Why? You were the best of us...
Tsunoda: Every time you post a cute picture to social media, you're helping to make the world a better place! [glares] You do want to make the world a better place, right? [takes a selfie] I'm such a giver.
  • Kabae's kids apparently have great careers ahead of them as detectives, given that they were apparently able to figure out from the dirt on Kabae's shoes that she had buried their presents in the woods. Retsuko is kind of stunned by that.
    • Comes back as a Brick Joke.
Kids: [proudly holding aloft dirty presents] Thanks for the presents!
Kabae: But I buried them so deep!
  • Haida has apparently taken some training in Medium Awareness.
Fenneko: INSTAGRAM IS EATING HER SOUL!
Haida: They're not gonna like this episode, huh?
  • Tsunoda explains it all, for a given value of "explains".
  • Tsunoda's attempts to convince Retsuko to "go big" with her Christmas celebrations get so intense that she starts to get Kaa-style hypno-eyes.
  • Haida practicing his attempt to invite Retsuko to a party is mostly kind of touching, until:
    Haida: Fenneko's coming too!
Fenneko: Why hasn't Fenneko heard about this?
    Haida: [hilariously over-the-top panic face]
  • Retsuko's been working too hard.
Retsuko: I've been a good girl. Maybe I have a Christmas miracle coming my way?
    [sleigh bells start jingling]
    Retsuko: What?...
[Ton appears in full Santa costume, in a sleigh pulled by two Komiya reindeers]
Santa Ton: Ho ho ho! Merry Christmas! [pulls a heap of paperwork out of his sack] It's due tonight. [disappears into the sky]
  • The above hallucination, combined with Tsunoda's "Dinner with bae" selfie, finally overloads Retsuko's Heavy Metal Node.
Retsuko: BURN IN THE INSTAFIRE! LIKES ARE WHAT I DESIRE!
  • Once she's finished the song, she dons her Comical Angry Face, smashes through the window, does a Three-Point Landing, and...walks off into the night on her tiny little legs.
  • When Retsuko posts a shot that appears to be two wineglasses at a fancy restaurant, we get to see Haida's face fall in real time, and then the bartender hands him a bottle of whisky, half of which does not survive the next fifteen seconds.
  • After that, Detective Fenneko turns her attention to the image and applies her Sherlock Scan gifts...followed by a Lampshade Hanging where she's actually shown in a deerstalker and holding a pipe.
  • Fenneko's explanation of the image is interrupted when Haida runs away in order to console Retsuko.
    Fenneko: Yeah, you're welcome!
  • Washimi decides to let Haida and Retsuko have some time to at least talk it out. Gori...does not pick up on this, leading to Washimi escorting her away as quickly as possible.

Netflix Series Season 2

Time To Grow Up
  • When talking about marriage, Fenneko teases Haida, saying that he's probably been dreaming about it since he was a kid.
Haida: (blushing) As if! I'm edgy! Edgy guys don't care about stuff like that!
  • After Retsuko suspects that someone has broken into her apartment, she decides to find something to use to defend herself. After dismissing a traffic cone and a metal pipe, she decides to use a wrench.
Retsuko: (while holding the wrench) Juuuust right.
    • After discovering that it's just her mother and explaining this to the cops she called, she asks her mother how she got into the (locked) apartment.
Retsuko's Mother: Simple. [shows a key] I just copied your key without ever telling you.
Retsuko: (to the cop) Please arrest her.
  • Retsuko's Mother shows where Retsuko gets her anger from when she lectures her daughter on what she needs to do to get married.
  • Retsuko's mother introduces her to a very dashing-looking polar bear named Shirota. When she actually meets him in person, he's noticeably heavier and much more laid back than he looked in the photo. Retsuko realizes, to her horror, that her mother knows how to use Photoshop.

The New Hire Named Anai

  • Retsuko's Mother doesn't budge when Retsuko asks that the former cancel the matchmaking date she set up for the latter.
Retsuko's Mother: Marriages from matchmaking result in lower divorce rates.
    • This gets funnier when she reveals that she herself thinks matchmaking is old fashioned.
Retsuko: Is a matchmaker how you met dad?
Retsuko's Mother: Oh, I never would've settled for that.
      Retsuko: Say what?
Retsuko's Mother: Matchmaking's pretty old fashioned. If anybody was going to find me my true love, it was going to be fate, and not some meddling relative.
    • While Retsuko's Mother is reminiscing about her own romance with Retsuko's Father, Metal Retsuko screams: "HYPOCRISY!".
  • At the matchmaker, upon seeing that her date looks a little different from his photo, Retsuko realizes that her mother photoshopped his picture before showing it to her. When she looks at her mother after realizing this, her mother turns her head away.

Double Moratorium

  • The episode opens with a pretty solemn scene, with Retsuko firmly telling her mom that she won't be seeing Shirota anymore, but as her mother presses her she resorts to increasingly flimsy protests, including the fact that he was wearing white socks with a suit, his tacky Velcro wallet, and his friendly personality and cute smile and good job. Eventually, Retsuko's mother relents and hangs up... and then calls her back less than five seconds later.
Retsuko's Mother: The sock thing is a pretty easy fix, dear.
Metal Retsuko: IT'S NOT ABOUT THE SOCKS MOOOOOOOOM!
  • When Retsuko tells the Receptionist why she's joining the driving class:
Retsuko: Life sucks and I wanna flee.
    Receptionist: I get that.

Unavoidable Impact

  • Ton partners Retsuko and Anai to work on their festival stall, comparing it to him marrying them off. Retsuko's reaction to this?
    Metal Retsuko: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
    • This is followed by an Imagine Spot of Retsuko and Anai in separate cars, the former behind the latter. Ton rolls up in a bulldozer and repeatedly rams Retsuko into the back of Anai's car, causing him to have a Freak Out. What makes the whole scene better is that Ton's ramming is done to the tune of the Wedding March, with him providing the music for emphasis.

United Front

  • Anai's responses to Tsunoda and Ton's attempts to get him to work properly fail completely and only result in frustrating them.
  • Gori chooses Yakisoba for their Family Day stall and has everyone in her department keep it under wraps, only to find out that there are no less than four other stalls all serving the same thing. One of her workers thinks if there was a mole in their department, but Washimi points out that because of how easy it is to make in large quantities almost everyone instantly thought of yakisoba.
  • Everyone who tastes the yakisoba that Retsuko cooked agrees that its terrible.
    • After taking one bite of Retsuko's yakisoba, Retsuko's Mother spits it out in disgust.
Retsuko's Mother: What did yakisoba ever do to you to deserve this treatment!?
    • Ton's daughters spit Retsuko's yakisoba onto their parents' faces. Ookami later reveals that they're telling everyone that the Accounting Department's yakisoba tastes like the bottom of a shoe.
  • There's something about Ton's family being voiced by the same actor that makes people chuckle.
  • Anai's yakisoba is so good that whoever eats it apparently has a religious experience.

Unknown Future

  • Even though she didn't want to go to another matchmaker date, Retsuko is still annoyed when her mother happily tells her that the guy said he wasn't interested in meeting her as he wanted to work in himself for now.
Retsuko: Why the hell are you laughing about it mom!?
  • When Retsuko goes speed dating upon her mother's suggestion, she unexpectedly runs into Gori. The two then read each other's profiles and point out the misinformation they wrote down.
    • When Retsuko asks Gori why she's here, as the event is for people in their 20s and 30s, Gori admits that she "likes them young".
      Retsuko: I kinda guessed.

Growing Affection

  • Retsuko's annoyed after seeing her picture on her driver's license.
Metal Retsuko: WHY DO I LOOK LIKE A CRIMINAAAAAL!?
    • Anai later make it worse after he reminds her of how long she'll need to wait before she can get her license renewed and change her picture.
  • Both Retsuko and Gori let out a Big "WHAT?!" when Washimi reveals that she was married once and got divorced four months later.

He Lives Above The Clouds

  • When Retsuko goes on her first date with Tadano, all she's told is he wants to take her to a ramen shop he prefers to go to. What follows is Retsuko learning that Tadano is rich, him taking her in a self-driving limousine and then a private jet from Tokyo to Hokkaido. Retsuko is obviously slowly getting more and more overwhelmed before she can't take it anymore.
Metal Retsuko: I THOUGHT WE WERE GOING FOR RAMEEEEEEEN!?
    • The day after their date, Retsuko assumes it was All Just a Dream. Then she sees the receipt for their ramen on her table and gets a text from Tadano saying that he had fun and that they should go on another date in the future.
  • When Retsuko's Mother shows her pictures of other possible suitors, Retsuko's lovestruck mind just perceives their faces as vegetables.
Retsuko: (internally) Other guys just look like veggies to me.
  • Later in the episode Tadano is able to get a hold of Retsuko's Driver's License Photo, which she immediately asks the AI to delete. The AI tells her only Administrator Access can delete, causing her to go straight to Tadano's hard drive threatening to destroy it until he promises to delete it.

She's Dreaming

  • Retsuko helps her friend Puko with setting up her office, only to learn that they need to carry all the stuff to the fifth floor of a building that doesn't have an elevator.
    Retsuko: Five floors of stairs?
    Puko: Uh-huh.
Retsuko: [points at the truck full of office equipment] Just us?
    Puko: Yeah. Girl power!
Metal Retsuko: I AM THE DAMN MOVEEEEER!
  • Gori and Washimi tackle each other in a hallway as if they were football players due to still being mad at one another. After they both fall to the floor, they just pick themselves up and walk away like nothing happened.
  • Fenneko and Kabae do a little snooping due to being curious about Retsuko's new boyfriend, and figure out that the picture she sent of the ramen she ate with him came from Hokkaido. Since the only way for her to have gone there after work and be back at work the next day is by flying, they assume Retsuko's dating an alien. The two of them then spend a few seconds laughing together creepily.
  • The CEO and Tadano go to play golf, bringing along Ton and Retsuko respectively. Ton's creepy cheerful smile returns as he praises Tadano and Retsuko while choking his own swings... and then it turns out that Retsuko is actually somewhat good at golf, driving Ton into a rage.
    The CEO: Nicely done!
    Ton: That hurt my soul.
  • Following social media posts revealing Retsuko and Tadano's relationship, a Big "WHAT?!" is given out by Puko, the receptionist at the driving school, and Retsuko's coworkers.

Wonderful Life

  • The episode starts with Haida answering a call from a very worried Fenneko, who asks him if he had read the article about Retsuko dating Tadano. When he mentions he had, Fenneko panics and tells him to stay calm and not repeat the incident that saw him hospitalized at the end of the previous season.
Fenneko: Just stay calm! Don't do something you'll regret!
Haida: And what kind of stuff would that be?
Fenneko: Wandering all over town drunk but you go to kick a can and fall flat on your back like last time.
Haida: Oooh... Hah. *Camera cuts to show him lying on the street in the rain* Did that right before I called ya.
Fenneko: Why are you such a dumbass?
  • When Tsunoda pesters Fenneko about Retsuko, Fenneko bluntly states that she knows why Tsunoda is asking.
Tsunoda: When's Retsuko gonna come back?
Fenneko: Leave me alone, thigh pic.
Tsunoda: But I gotta ask her something important Fenneko.
Fenneko: Let me guess. You want her advice on how to land a hot, rich, famous boyfriend.
Tsunoda: Wow, are you psychic or something?
Fenneko: Yeah, you caught me. (Tsunoda is revealed to have dollar signs on her eyes)
  • Anai's complete lack of social hints causes him to ask Retsuko the exact worst possible thing the moment she comes in. Specifically if she intends to get married to get a higher social standing. Fenneko and Kabae are understandably horrified by this. Bonus points for him doing it with his happy face. Fortunately Ton comes and drags Retsuko off before it gets anymore awkward.
  • Right after Haida knocks out Kobayashi as part of his, Gori, and Washimi's plan, they realize that now there's no one who can drive the limo (none of them are aware that ENI-O is the one who actually drives the car).
  • Retsuko helps Puko with moving out of her office only a month after they moved everything in because the latter didn't realize that she needed to pay rent for the space every month.

Netflix Series Season 3

The Blessings of Life
  • Retsuko's breakup with Tadano has forced her into a virtual game dating a virtual unicorn boyfriend for whom she has brought a bunch of in-game clothing through a lot of Microtransactions.
  • Retsuko doesn't realize that she has a mark on her face from wearing the VR headset for too long until after she's at work. She tries to cover it up with make up with mixed results.
Ookami: Whoa. Swung for the fence with the make up yeah?
  • Fenneko pokes fun at Haida's passivity when it comes to his crush on Retsuko.
"Guess you'll be flying solo for another year, hahahahahahahaha."

Deep in the Hole

  • Fenneko buys Heartthrob: Virtual Boyfriend out of a combination of spite and curiosity. At first, she's determined to play for a few hours, pawn it off and then review-bomb it online. If her flustered reactions are anything to go by, her plans make a complete U-turn.
Fenneko: I LOVE YOU SEXY VR UNICOOOOOOOORN!!!
  • Drunk!Haida and his absolute refusal to believe Anai's claim of having a non-virtual girlfriend.
Haida: (being dragged along supported by Anai) ♪Iss Anaaaaai an' Haidaaa! An' we're havin' such fun.♪ Y'know, I always wanted to try VR, I'm t'lly gonna give yours a whirl...
    Anai: I don't have a headset, okay?
    Haida: (sing-song) I think that you do-oooo~!
Anai: HOW ARE YOU THIS DRUNK?! WE ONLY HAD ONE BEER APIECE! WHAT THE HELL, HAIDA?!
    • Beforehand, when being incessantly asked by Haida to call his girlfriend:
    • He later meets with Hakumi, Anai's girlfriend. He first thinks she's actual "incredible" game graphics, but Anai yells at him about being in reality.
  • The guy who's van Retsuko hit hires her as his accountant to pay back the damages she owns. Retsuko is absolutely terrified about what kind of shady work he does. Only to reveal he is the producer for an underground Girls Idol Band. Who then goes up to the lackluster crowd to wild them up by headbanging, which explains his neck pain Retsuko thought she was the cause of.

A Sheltered Life

  • Retsuko's guilt tripped into becoming the accountant of OTMGirls after accidentally reversing into its manager's van.
  • Retsuko's first job as accountant is getting Manaka some gummies and wet wipes.

    Metal Retsuko: SCREW YOU CAPITALISMMMMMMMM!!!

Retsuko: (after Manaka fails to play a simple chord) So that was a G?
Manaka: No, that was some BS.
  • Retsuko goes melodramatic over how hard playing the F chord is.
"It's the unreachable double wall that towers over all beginner guitar players. Many challengers have fallen to their knees and died just looking at it."

He then leaves with a smile on his face and says "Welp, see you later!". The scene then cuts to a "Rage Mode" Retsuko screaming into a mic while Fenneko looks on in shame over having told Retsuko what Haida's problem is.
Retsuko: Choke on it you loser!
Fenneko: Forgive me Haida. I kinda, told her everything.
  • Haida helps Tsubone out with some computer issues.

Netflix Series Season 5

  • Fenneko's iconic deadpan laugh returns.
  • Retsuko, Fenneko, Anai, and Kabae finding Haida sleeping at an internet cafe. Not only that, but he's in a two-person room, laying on a mattress with a girl next to him. Haida is about to fall asleep when he sees an angry Retusko glaring at him with red eyes. This is quickly followed by Fenneko, Anai, and Kabae appearing, also glaring at him with the same kind of eyes as Retsuko. All four agree to punish him.
    • Not only that, but what follows is a Smash Cut to Retsuko metal-screaming at Haida, calling him a "dumbass", with Anai and Kabae also berating him in a similar metal-screaming style. While Fenneko is having a calm conversation with Shikabane outside the room, the other three are still yelling at Haida, with absolutely no sound being heard.
    • Shikabane immediately figures out that Fenneko is the new player they met online, to the latter's surprise.
    • Early on in the restaurant, after hearing Anai telling them that Haida called him in the previous episode to ask him if he can crash in his house temporarily, Retsuko goes in “Rage Mode” and nearly blows up their cover if not for Anai and Fenneko holding her back.
  • Haida becomes the favorite focus of his coworkers at the convenience store, who are all middle aged women who see him like a son, to the point one of them gives him a huge box of persimmons, which Haida can't refuse because of his good manners. Retsuko is clearly upset because they can't finish them all, so they try to give them to their friends, but nobody likes persimmons. Haida finally finds someone who likes persimmons: Tadano.
    • Their hang out doesn't end there, as Haida takes them both to the Internet cafe where he used to live, and Tadano's reaction is like a kid going to the amusement part for the first time, claiming that the small cubicles, the manga library and the soda vending machines are commodities he could use, compared to his big empty apartment. A few episodes later, Tadano reveals that he bought the Internet Cafe as his new place. Take in account that he could've easily redecorated his home to look like the cafe, but instead opted to buy the entire place for himself just because he could. And when we see him, he's only using one of the several (now empty) stalls.
    • The persimmons also serve as a subject to text Shikabane. On his last day from the convenience store, Haida's coworker gives him another big bag of persimmons. Casually, Shikabane just replies that she will take them if they're free. Althought she answers Haida's message a month later, he still meets up with her. Shikabane wonders why Haida still has a bag of persimmons with him after a month.
  • After being ambushed by Ikari, Retsuko and Haida go to look up his work in government. All we're shown is Ikari going into a rant to the Prime Minister about nothing in particular. The last thing we hear is another politician grousing "Why are you like this?". The clip ends with Ikari seemingly having a heart attack from how worked up he got. To top this off, his face becomes an internet meme in the comments section of the video.
Fenneko: It's been awhile since I lost it...
