It's been a while since I woke up on this infested facility.

The Green-Eyed's Tale is a Changed fanfic by Chrispy, published on Wattpad, which tries to put aside the transformation fetish aspect of the original game to provide a solid story. The story began in November 09, 2020 and was finished in December 07, 2020.

The story takes the focus on an amnesiac boy called Haru and his struggles to get to the bottom of the situation, or better said, facility he's currently in. The story is told in a journal format, each page being catalogued as an "Entry" of varying lengths, occasionally with drawings attached made by the protagonist, a group of 10 entries being called an "Arc"

The more the story progresses, Haru obtains new allies, abilities and objects to defend himself, all with the purpose of obtaining answers to his driving questions, and the more Role-Playing Game characteristics it gains.

A prequel spin-off called The First One focusing on the character of the same name is now in the works.

The Green Eyed's Tale contains examples of:

  • 11th-Hour Superpower: The fusion between Kenny and Yuin, Kyuin and the Crystal Mask.
  • Accidental Misnaming: Haru accidentally calls Yuin as "Vacky" (his vacuum companion at the beginning of the story) in one conversation of Arc 3.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Dr. K cannot be compared to his Well-Intentioned Extremist behavior in the original game, providing help to Haru in several points of the story instead of trying to kill them in every single possible corner.
  • Alternate Universe: Most of the story takes place in one, the most prominent one is that The Virus from the original game didn't result in the extinction of humanity.
  • Arch-Enemy: The Wolf King to Haru as he constantly remarks that he absolutely despises him after their battle. The White Knight to The First One, the latter hates him for assimilating his fiancé. Fridge Brilliance that one is a (black) king and the other is a (white) knight.
  • Arc Number: Three. 3 Latex Beast groups, 3 protagonists, 3 Doctors, 3 human friends, 3 Humans that came from the warehouse, making Haru the Third One... All of these are coincidental, but a frightening amount of plot elements come in three nonetheless.
  • Arc Words: Two phrases stand out:
    • Much to the original game, changed. The story's focus is seeing how Haru's personality changes from a scared and powerless fellow to a guy who runs around and kills beasts with a hammer, not to mention how he manages to change several creatures' mind, mostly in the sense of making them not want to kill him.
    • "In this infested facility.", the words Haru uses to begin some of his entries.
  • Art Evolution: Compare the art for the first two arcs of The Green Eyed's Tale to the art in the final chapter or the art present in The First One.
  • Author Appeal: Yuin sticks her butt at Haru very often.
    • Maron does the same thing to Kenny later on.
    • The story attempts to avert the original game's transformation fetish Author Appeal with varying levels of success.
  • Author Filibuster: In The First One, the titular character has a long tangent about occidental languages utilizing different characters each and how complex they are to learn because of so.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Kenny saves Haru from the HISEV-controlled Puro and Colin with a surprise attack in Arc 7.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: In The First One, when Knight has the First One cornered between lasers, he decides to go simply let him go instead of just absorbing him. Justified by the fact that Knight seems to be very aware of Kenny's ability to respawn.
  • Buffy Speak: Haru (and thereby the author) has a field day with the Intravenous Poles, calling them "metal fucking stands with wheels" every time possible.
  • Chekhov's Gun: To name a few:
    • The upgrades Haru obtains in the story are useless in most scenarios except for two: The Latex Gloves he gains in Arc 1 Allow him to snap out of the Wolf King's bonds/mind control by retracting the ones restraining the arms back to his body, and the Receiver Ears he gains after revisiting the Elder One Allow him to communicate with some Yufengs to help him escape after being trapped in a cramped room on Arc 3. Unluckily for him, the Yufengs are helping somebody else.
    • The hammer thrown to a door in rage by The First One in his first encounter with Haru is ignored for the rest of the battle. Haru comes back to pick it up and use it as a weapon later on.
    • The syringe and sketch of the Snow Leopard in the vent shaft. Turns out the beast inside of the syringe is Mizuko's fursona and the drawing to be a piece of the Snow Leopard's concept art that was left behind, also made by Mizuko.
    • Colin and Puro, protagonists of the original game, are missing for most of the story because "Colin fell sick and Puro is taking care of him." When they appear on the story, they've been fallen under control by the HISEV: The unnamed virus from the original game that Colin was a possible carrier of.
  • Cool Shades: Kenny wears dark triangular shades after he joins Haru's team. He only takes them off once in the whole story.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Zigzagged. The Yufengs and the Elder One (Dark Latex Beasts) are friendly to Haru for most of the story, but the Dark Latex Wolves aren't. Not even Puro. Speaking of which, the Clusterhive and its minions are described as made of a transparent sheer-black liquid, the only different color in their body being a pink/white glowing core.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Haru loves to make sarcastic remarks, specially when it comes to how weird of a situation he's currently in.
"Wow. Transfurmative. You're using a coined lame pun name seriously."
  • A Dog Named "Dog": The Tiger Shark, the Snow Leopard and the Squid Dog to name a few.
  • Doomed by Canon: The First One, the prequel story, is this trope embodified. Throughout the story, his goal was to find a way to restore his assimilated fiancé. The original story makes it very clear that didn't quite make it.
  • Driven to Suicide: The person working as the Tiger Shark's host ran into his body so she could be assimilated because of believing that "Her life will be better as part of him.", whatever caused it is unknown, as the Tiger Shark says she doesn't want him to be talking about it.
  • Easily Forgiven: Haru forgives almost every creature that apologizes for attacking him without thinking it twice. This gets to absurd levels with the final boss, who tried to boil the whole facility and everything inside of it and corrupted every single one of the latex beasts, not to mention that they tried to blackmail Haru by threatening to kill Yuin if he didn't bring him the bag containing his blood. Both Yuin and Kenny call him out for it.
  • Expy
    • The First One is quite similar to a spoiler character from the videogame Ghost Trick, wearing the same shades as they do and (Ghost Trick spoilers) having very similar motives for going berserk, as both have the love of their life taken away from them and become inhuman creatures. Word of God says that he gave him the spoiler character's shades to reference the similar backstories.
    • Haru's father looks quite similar to Dexter from Dexter's Laboratory.
    • Haru shares names with Haru from The Cat Returns, a girl who gets caught in a Fisher Kingdom of cats; the longer she stays on that world, the more she becomes a cat.
  • Foreshadowing: The Elder One asking Haru what animal Vacky is can be seen as him not understanding technology, that and her being a vacuum cleaner instead of a sweeping robot all lead to her not being a Roomba.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Weren't it for the Rule of Three...
    • Haru and his friends: Haru is Melancholic, Yuin is Phlegmatic and Kenny is Chloleric.
    • Haru and his human friends play it straight: Kennedy is Sanguine, Carlos is Chloleric, Millie is Phlegmatic and Haru is once again Melancholic (although Character Development would position him as Sanguine or Phlegmatic.
    • The Three Founding Doctors: Dr. K is Melancholic, Matthew Smith is Phlegmatic and Mizuko is Sanguine.
  • Gender-Blender Name: In actual Japanese, Haru is a girl's name. It turns out that his real name is Harold, "Haru" being a nickname given by his Japanese mother for easier spelling (Which makes you wonder why she would give him such a nickname.)
  • Hidden Depths: Some characters reveal theirs at some point, also doubles as part of their Character Development.
    • Haru, who begins the adventure as quite fearful, but under stress learns to be The Leader.
    • The First One, who is hyped up to be a ruthless murderer, begins as a Jerkass Deadpan Snarker, but all he wants is to see his dead fiancé again. When he begins to tag along with Haru and Yuin, starts to see a new light on the Latex Beasts he once hated with a passion and develops true care for his teammates.
    • Mizuko is implied to be very... weird, to put it in a non-squicky way.
  • I Call It "Vera": Haru calls his hammer as Da Hammer (and in his inventory screen as DA HAMMER).
  • Interspecies Romance: The First One and Mizuko, monster and human respectively.
    • Haru attempts to defy it with Yuin.
Haru: ("You're aware of how fucking creepy - and ILLEGAL - it would be if I enjoyed looking at a goddamn animal's butt?"
  • Informed Flaw: Haru having myopia. He doesn't have much trouble describing rooms and seeing from far away.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: Haru (indirectly)note  gets the Wolf King and Tiger Shark to fight and weaken each other, landing the final blow on the Wolf King and earning the Tiger Shark's trust as they cannot fight any longer.
  • Meaningful Appearance: Mizuko has the same kind of curly spiral on her hair as Maron. Turns out Maron is her fursona.
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: When Haru falls unconscious in one of the arcs, Kenny writes entries in his journal instead.
  • No Name Given: Dr. K's first name is never revealed.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted with the characters of The First One (Ken Jones) and Kennedy Corwick, as Haru calls them both by the nickname of Kenny.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • Whenever Haru gets angry such as when he kills the Snow Leopard in the ventilation shaft, showing absolutely zero regrets for so anywhere in the story.
    • When Kenny looks visibly glum and gives Haru a Get A Hold Of Yourself Man speech.
    • The Doctor after Haru constantly replies to every single one of his attempts to get him back on track after getting depressed for becoming Maron, he outright cusses at him:
The Doctor slammed his desk. "JUST DO SOMETHING, SCUMBAG!"
  • Previous Player-Character Cameo: Colin and Puro are nowhere to be seen for most of the story until the very end. And they're the Greater-Scope Villain's pawns.
  • Shout-Out: There are plenty.
    • Haru mentions Among Us and compares The Impostors (parasitistic shapeshifting aliens) to the parasitistic shapeshifting furries that antagonize him.
    • The stubby foxes "Dancing to the song that plays for the entirety of the Helltaker videogame".
    • Several to Bad Creepypasta:
      • The maintenance employees' names are Jacob, Matt and Toby, the three crewmembers of Bad Creepypasta, not only that, but the author stealth-advertises the channel in the Cast Roll chapter.
      • Haru likes to say "Of course he does", a line oftenly said by Toby. Also worth mentioning that Haru is british just like the Bad Creepypasta crew.
      • Gemma Steinn from the epilogue shares names with Gemma, the Token Female member of the Bad Creepypasta crew.
    • The First One to Ghost Trick, see Expy above.
    • The character appearing in Entry ¿ is from another of Chrispy's series called Scarlet Rain.
    • Several to My Hero Academia.
    • Haru is depicted with a glowing blue eye in the Da Hammer item slot, much like certain Undertale character...
    • Millie's full name is Millie Moxy, Millie and Moxxie are two of the five main characters from Helluva Boss.
    • Kennedy Corwick sounds like a Captain Ersatz of Kenny McCorwick.
  • Sorting Algorithm of Evil: First, Haru fights against the Dark Latex Beasts, then the Light Latex Beasts, then the Colored Latex Beasts and finally a virus that has taken control of the whole facility's samples.
  • Sudden Gameplay Change: It began with Haru getting a 10-slot inventory then escalated into RPG fights near the end of the story.
  • Super Gender-Bender: A few entries after Haru stabs himself with a strange syringe in Arc 3 and being told that he had nothing to worry about as the syringe wasn't pulled, he gets transformed into a female latex beast cat dubbed as Maron, which grants him the basic abilities of latex beasts.
  • Super-Senses: The monsters have all augmented senses reminiscent of dogs, even those that aren't canine in the slightest.
  • That Came Out Wrong: Some sentences are called out for sounding dirty by some of the characters:
Kenny: "...I suppose I'm the only who smells this because I'm a fox, but he's choking on adrenaline right now! He's not getting banged, he's banging someone else!"
  • Theme Naming: The Big Bad latex beasts' names are all based on medieval hierarchy, in The Green Eyed's Tale we've got the Wolf King and the White Knight, in The First One, we've got the Color Queen.
    Yuin: "That sounds... dirty."
  • Took a Level in Badass: Haru after he gets the hammer.
    • Special mention to Puro and Colin. although Puro did defeat K in combat and Colin managed to fight back against latex beasts in the original game, it doesn't compare with HISEV!Colin.
  • You, Get Me Coffee: In the ending, Haru is inevitably doomed to do this after he takes an internship offer.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?:
    • Nobody knows of the Clusterhive's whereabouts past the final entry.
    • The stubby foxes from the ventilation shaft are never addressed or explained.
